The Compound Risk Of Heat And Covid-19 In New York City: Riskscapes, Physical And Social Factors, And Interventions, Janelle Knox-Hayes, Juan Camilo Osorio, Natasha Stamler, Maria Dombrov, Rose Winer, Mary Hannah Smith, Reginald Blake, Cynthia Rosenzweig

Publications and Research

Climate change is disrupting the fundamental conditions of human life and exacerbating existing inequity by placing further burdens on communities that are already vulnerable. Risk exposure varies by where people live and work. In this article, we examine the spatial overlap of the compound risks of COVID-19 and extreme heat in New York City. We assess the relationship between socio-demographic and natural, built and social environmental characteristics, and the spatial correspondence of COVID-19 daily case rates across three pandemic waves. We use these data to create a compound risk index combining heat, COVID-19, density and social vulnerability. Our findings demonstrate …

The Hero’S Journey As A Novel, Narrative, And Improvisational Group Intervention On Quality Of Life For People With Parkinson’S Disease, Robert D. Cochrane, James W. Navalta, Anne E. Weisman

Heroism Science

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the fastest-growing neurological diseases in the world. Pharmaceutical and surgical interventions continue to advance to better address motor symptoms. However, disability from non-motor symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and stress persist. Expressive therapies, including art, music, and dance are being explored and implemented more frequently to address this growing need. We developed this study to examine the feasibility of a novel program using online narrative therapy, with constructs from Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, and improvisation for people with PD (PWPD). Participants from across the U.S. and U.K. met online via Zoom once a week …

How Resilience Is Framed Matters For Governance Of Coastal Social-Ecological Systems, Sarah Clement, Javad Jozaei, Michael Mitchell, Craig R. Allen, Ahjond S. Garmestani

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Effective governance of social-ecological systems (SES) is an enduring challenge, especially in coastal environments where accelerating impacts of climate change are increasing pressure on already stressed systems. While resilience is often proposed as a suitable framing to re-orient governance and management, the literature includes many different, and sometimes conflicting, definitions and ideas that influence how the concept is applied, especially in coastal environments. This study combines discourse analysis of the coastal governance literature and key informant interviews in Tasmania, Australia, demonstrating inconsistencies and confusion in the way that resilience is framed in coastal governance research and practice. We find that …

The Use Of Remote Sensing To Assess Of Tropical Forests Drought Sensitivity In The Eastern Amazon, Ali Fadhil Hassan Apr 2023

The Use Of Remote Sensing To Assess Of Tropical Forests Drought Sensitivity In The Eastern Amazon, Ali Fadhil Hassan

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Since the year 2005, Brazilian Amazon has experienced the decline of deforestation rates due to regional & federal public policies as well as to production chain commitments. The agricultural frontier seems to be stabilized with a fragmented landscape of cropland, pasture and primary and secondary forest patches. But, the remaining forestry was experiencing a process of forest degradation: recurrent, selective logging and non-controlled fire that is coming from the harvesting areas which occurs in the forest mosaics which reduce their biomass and their biodiversity and increase their vulnerability to dryness and fire. Assessing the forest degradation is an important environmental …

“Why You Always So Political?”: A Counterstory About Educational-Environmental Racism At A Predominantly White University, Martín Alberto Gonzalez

Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education

Using critical race counterstorytelling, I tell a story about the experiences of Mexican/Mexican American/Xicanx (MMAX) undergraduate students at private, historically and predominantly white university in the Northeast. Drawing on in-depth interviews, participant observations, pláticas, document analyses, and literature on race and space and racism in higher education, I argue that the racially hostile campus environment experienced by MMAX students at their respective university manifests itself as a form of educational-environmental racism. Through narrated dialogue, Aurora (a composite character) and I delve into a critical conversation about how educational-environmental racism is experienced by MMAX students through a racialized landscape in the …

The Role Of Titanium Dioxide On The Behaviour And Fate Of Plastics In The Aquatic Environment, Andrew Turner, Montserrat Filella

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Although titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most widely used pigment in plastics, there is limited quantitative information available for consumer goods and environmental samples. Moreover, and despite its photocatalytic activity, the potential impacts of TiO2 on the behaviour and fate of environmental plastics has received little attention. This paper compiles measurements of Ti in plastic samples from aquatic environments and in consumer goods that are known to make important contributions to environmental pollution. These data, along with a critical evaluation of experimental studies using TiO2-pigmented plastics, are used to formulate an understanding of how the pigment modifies the properties and …

Identifying Disinformation In Scholarly Publishing, Natalie M. Mclendon Apr 2023

Identifying Disinformation In Scholarly Publishing, Natalie M. Mclendon

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines the pro-Confederacy movement’s attempt to distort history through textbook revision to argue in favor of strengthened media literacy as a brace against the effects of disinformation and propaganda. Previous definitions of misinformation and disinformation overlap and are as yet unclear and, therefore, should be further studied. “Lost Cause” mythologists worked diligently to propagate school textbooks which portrayed skewed versions of history that cast Southern Confederates’ cause as noble and honorable while obscuring the real reason for the Civil War. While undergraduate students can rely on the CRAAP and BEAM methods of identifying problematic texts, they should be …

Geography ETDs

Las Cruces is the second largest city in New Mexico which has experienced exponential growth in the last three decades. The city has been cultivated by a rich history of Native populations, Spanish colonialism, and American democratic government. The culmination of these influences on Las Cruces had much influence on the Mesquite Historic District, the original townsite of Las Cruces. This area is home to many generational families and is adjacent to the downtown Main Street corridor. Downtown was built from the destruction of the Mesquite Historic District caused by waves of urban renewal projects. Through organizing, legislative action and …

God Our Neighbor: Discerning Our Calling By Discovering God's Life In Our Neighborhood, Wayne D. Beason Ii

DMin Project Theses

This April 2023 Doctor of Ministry project thesis at Lipscomb University presents the results of research completed with congregants and neighbors of Parkside Church of Christ in Dearborn Heights, MI. The research question driving this project is: How might a congregation’s missional identity be reshaped by attentiveness to God’s activity among their neighbors? The missional activity of the Holy Spirit makes God’s future accessible in the present both within and beyond the church; thus, the Spirit is discernible in the particularity of a neighborhood. For this reason, the local neighborhood functions as an arena of the Spirit’s activity, a source …

Contribution Of Glaciers To Water, Energy And Food Security In Mountain Regions: Current Perspectives And Future Priorities, C Clason, S Rangecroft, Pn Owens, E Łokas, G Baccolo, N Selmes, D Beard, J Kitch, Rm Dextre, S Morera, W Blake

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Mountain glaciers are crucial sources of fresh water, contributing directly and indirectly to water, energy and food supplies for hundreds of millions of people. Assessing the impact of diminishing glacial meltwater contributions to the security of this resource is critical as we seek to manage and adapt to changing freshwater dynamics in a warming world. Both water quantity and quality influence water (in)security, so understanding the fluxes of water, sediment and contaminants through glacial and proglacial systems is required for holistic assessment of meltwater contribution to downstream resource security. In this paper we consider the socio-environmental role of and pressures …

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Climate warming and related drivers of soil thermal change in the Arctic are expected to modify the distribution and dynamics of carbon contained in perennially frozen grounds. Thawing of permafrost in the Mackenzie River watershed of northwestern Canada, coupled with increases in river discharge and coastal erosion, triggers the release of terrestrial organic matter (OMt) from the largest Arctic drainage basin in North America into the Arctic Ocean. While this process is ongoing and its rate is accelerating, the fate of the newly mobilized organic matter as it transits from the watershed through the delta and into the marine system …

Global Gateways As Telecoupled Human And Natural Systems: The Emerging Case Of The Bering Strait, Jennifer Schmidt Apr 2023

Global Gateways As Telecoupled Human And Natural Systems: The Emerging Case Of The Bering Strait, Jennifer Schmidt

ISER Articles

Numerous narrow marine passages around the world serve as essential gateways for the transportation of goods, the movement of people, and the migration of fish and wildlife. These global gateways facilitate human–nature interactions across distant regions. The socioeconomic and environmental interactions among distant coupled human and natural systems affect the sustainability of global gateways in complex ways. However, the assessment and analysis of global gateways are scattered and fragmented. To fill this knowledge gap, we frame global gateways as telecoupled human and natural systems using an emerging global gateway, the Bering Strait, as a demonstration. We examine how three telecoupling …

Engaging Northern Rural And Indigenous Students: Case Studies Using One Health Principles Of Educational Resilience, Paul Cotter, Lori Gildehaus, Ellen Chenoweth, Janice Straley, Karsten Hueffer, Arleigh J. Reynolds

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Indigenous and rural populations are underrepresented in many science-related educational fields, leading to underrepresentation in biomedical, science, and related professions. A contributing factor is the misalignment of Western education and engagement strategies and these cultures; this is especially true for northern subsistence cultures. We review the influence of a combined One Health/Quadripartite Model of Educational Resilience approach in promoting interest in, recruiting for, and retaining students in biomedical research and community health across three education levels. We suggest a One Health context resonates with Indigenous and rural populations and may be more culturally aligned than conventional education approaches. Implementing Quadripartite …

'Annihilated In His Presence': Legitimacy And Use Of Images By Second-Generation Monarchs In The Royal Portraits Of Henry Viii, James Ii, And George Ii, Amber Anna Colvin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation seeks to compare the ways in which Henry VIII, James II, and George II, along with their families, used their images to react and respond to challenges to their legitimacy and rule. I argue that these kings used images in a way unique to the early modern period – a time in which the search for legitimate authority was a primary concern – and that they can represent continuity and change in how legitimacy was represented and the early modern period as a whole, a period generally understood as roughly spanning roughly 1500 – 1800 CE in Europe. …

Automatic And Manual Segmentation Of The Piriform Cortex: Method Development And Validation In Patients With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy And Alzheimer's Disease, D Steinbart, Sn Yaakub, M Steinbrenner, Ls Guldin, Et Al

School of Psychology

The piriform cortex (PC) is located at the junction of the temporal and frontal lobes. It is involved physiologically in olfaction as well as memory and plays an important role in epilepsy. Its study at scale is held back by the absence of automatic segmentation methods on MRI. We devised a manual segmentation protocol for PC volumes, integrated those manually derived images into the Hammers Atlas Database (n = 30) and used an extensively validated method (multi-atlas propagation with enhanced registration, MAPER) for automatic PC segmentation. We applied automated PC volumetry to patients with unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal …

To do so, we conducted a qualitative study using a grounded theory approach to interview 9 caregivers of children with …

Menetekel: Ishmael's Black Whale And The Semiotics Of Doom, Todd Tyner Cronkhite Apr 2023

Menetekel: Ishmael's Black Whale And The Semiotics Of Doom, Todd Tyner Cronkhite

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study employs the narrator of Moby Dick, Ishmael, as a focal critic to interpret several potential examples of ominous writing on the wall, or menetekel. It concludes that the message of such writing, owing primarily to its irrevocably deictic relationship with the surface it is written on, is fundamentally apocalyptic in nature, regardless of its explicit content. The physical walls of the “kingdom” are incorporated into the grammar of the menetekel as object, so that its elemental message, “I was here,” becomes not only an admission of criminal trespass, but also a direct threat to the current order and …
