Social Media Impact On Entrepreneurship Intention: Lessons Learned From Business Startuppers, Panagiotis Mallios, Leonidas Zampetakis, Vassilis Moustakis

Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship

The potential impact of social media use on the development of entrepreneurial intention has received little attention. In addressing this gap, research reported herein extends entrepreneurial intention literature by explicitly incorporating social media use. Inquiry investigates development of intention via specific social media factors that influence intention through its antecedents, namely, perceived entrepreneurial desirability and perceived entrepreneurial feasibility. The article summarizes the salient aspects of a quantitative study of social media usage and startup entrepreneurial intention in Greece. Based on the entrepreneurship event model, theory of planned behavior and technology acceptance and adoption models, this article examines potential social media …

How Can A Culturally Responsive Discussion Of The Five-Paragraph Essay Help Asian American Students Write Well?, Yuemin He, Catherine M. Gaiser Apr 2023

How Can A Culturally Responsive Discussion Of The Five-Paragraph Essay Help Asian American Students Write Well?, Yuemin He, Catherine M. Gaiser

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

The five-paragraph essay is highly controversial, and yet it has also been a useful format for composition. In this essay we explain why, despite its limits, students need to go along with the format to make what use and get what advantage of it. We then demonstrate that valuing the philosophical, historical, cultural, and educational backgrounds of our students can help navigate away from the restrictive nature of the format and lead to equitable learning for all students. Finally, we introduce a few curriculum designs and instructional practices to expand the epistemological and pedagogical frontiers of the format. In short, …

Vcca 2022 Convention Keynote Address: The Mission Of The Community College, Jim Mcclellan

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

The community college is an attempt to realize the promise of the Declaration of Independence: the ideal that all are created equal. It is to higher education what universal suffrage is to the ballot, voting rights for all, higher education for all. The mission of the community college is to provide access to education for those to whom it has traditionally been denied.

“We Were Amused By An Itinerant Singing-Man”: Print, Writing, And Orality In Mungo Park’S Travels In The Interior Districts Of Africa, A Sood Apr 2023

“We Were Amused By An Itinerant Singing-Man”: Print, Writing, And Orality In Mungo Park’S Travels In The Interior Districts Of Africa, A Sood

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This article draws on critical Indigenous theories to locate previously marginalized knowledge systems in Mungo Park’s Travels in The Interior Districts of Africa (1799). Park’s text abounds with descriptions of jilla keas, “singing-men,” and other examples of West African literary cultures (written and oral). I argue that an Indigenous-centered method of reading allows us to locate the Mande knowledges that not only informed Park’s mediations of orality but also attempted to resist and reimagine oral culture in the face of increasing colonial presence in West Africa. This article offers possibilities for the critical recovery of Indigenous knowledges within colonial texts. …

Perceptions Of Tourism And Quality Of Life: A Case Study In Savannah, Georgia, Marissa J. Renee

Honors College Theses

The World Travel and Tourism Council estimates that Travel and Tourism accounted for 10.3% of the world economy in 2019 and ¼ of all net new jobs over the past five years. Savannah, Georgia has experienced huge growth in the last decade due to tourism, with visitor spending on lodging alone increasing from $466 million in 2009 to $1 billion in 2019. The current study examined differences in perceived impact of tourism on quality of life using established predictors of tourism sentiments. An online community survey was conducted in Chatham County, Georgia (N = 94) using the Tourism Quality of …

Positive Parenting With Guyanese Children, Parthener Pinder Apr 2023

Positive Parenting With Guyanese Children, Parthener Pinder

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

During the earliest years of life, a child has rapid neurological development. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), such as Guyana, there continues to be a struggle to educate all children, especially those in rural or isolated areas leading to concerns about young children's development, particularly those under five. LMICs have little research on how caregiver positive parenting in the household affects early childhood development as well as how other sociodemographic factors influence positive parenting. This study answers the question: Does positive parenting in the household improve learning development in Guyanese children? This study used Guyana’s Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey …

The Enforcement Value Of Disclosure, Stephanie Bornstein Apr 2023

The Enforcement Value Of Disclosure, Stephanie Bornstein

Duke Law Journal

Information disclosures often “nudge” consumers to make better choices—for example, when manufacturers include nutrition labels on food packaging or fuel economy standards on cars. Yet having to disclose can have a nudge effect on the disclosing entity, too—for example, by incentivizing a manufacturer to make healthier food or more fuel-efficient cars. Recently, regulators around the world have begun to use information disclosures to improve racial and gender equality—for example, by requiring certain businesses to disclose information on things like harassment complaints, board diversity, and employee pay. But are such disclosure efforts worth their costs? And what would indicate that policymakers …

A Canadian Perspective On Fifty Years Of International Economic Law, J. Anthony Van Duzer Apr 2023

A Canadian Perspective On Fifty Years Of International Economic Law, J. Anthony Van Duzer

Dalhousie Law Journal

In 1970, “international economic law” (IEL) was not a distinct academic subject. Fifty years later, IEL has become an important and well-recognized field of legal enquiry, though its boundaries remain unclear. Globalization of trade and investment activity and the concomitant proliferation of trade and investment treaties over the last 50 years have been key drivers of academic interest in IEL and its transformation. The impacts of trade and investment on the protection of the environment and health, Indigenous, labour, and human rights, development, and other policy priorities have become significant subjects of academic discourse and are increasingly addressed in trade …

Real-Time Mapping With Global Positioning Systems Devices In A Mixed Methods Toolkit For Studying Social And Environmental Change, Cynthia Twyford Fowler Apr 2023

Real-Time Mapping With Global Positioning Systems Devices In A Mixed Methods Toolkit For Studying Social And Environmental Change, Cynthia Twyford Fowler

Faculty Scholarship

To explore the process through which people develop knowledge about socioecological change, this article describes a mixed-methods toolkit containing a technique for making maps in real time while moving through landscapes. The quantitative component of the toolkit is grounded in ethnobiologists’ embeddedness in place-based communities and harnesses the power of global positioning systems (GPS). As GPS-wielding ethnobiologists engage in participatory mapping by moving through landscapes with their research collaborators, we can use handheld devices and simultaneously communicate with satellites in outer space to produce maps in real time. Within the existing, large inventory of ethnobiological methods, using handheld GPS devices …

Identifying And Avoiding Survey Nonresponse And Noncompliance, Allix Bishop Apr 2023

Identifying And Avoiding Survey Nonresponse And Noncompliance, Allix Bishop

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

In the last five years, researchers have seen a notable increase in difficulty of collecting valid and useful survey data. Respondents, likely attracted to the prospect of receiving prizes or other compensation after survey completion, submit survey responses that are irrelevant to the questions asked, relevant but unusable due to the respondent not identifying as a member of the target population, or comprised of nonsense (such as paragraphs of lorem ipsum text or copy-pasted from other sources). As a result of experiencing a high volume of invalid survey responses to a qualitative survey aiming to research identity narrative formation among …

Effectiveness And Usability Of The Dobot Magician Robotic Arm, Brandt Hagen, Lawson Ricke Apr 2023

Effectiveness And Usability Of The Dobot Magician Robotic Arm, Brandt Hagen, Lawson Ricke

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The Dobot Magician is an all-in-one robot designed by the company Dobot for the purpose of teaching robotics. The magician is supposed to be able to grab things with both a pneumatic gripper and suction cup, draw, 3D print, and laser engrave. The original goal for this investigation was to determine the functionality of the Dobot Magician regarding repeatability and accuracy. The accuracy of a robot can be understood as the difference between where the robot is programmed to go to, and where the robot is in space. Repeatability is the ability of the robot to return to the same …

New Rule-Based Model To Predict Maternal Mortality Risk, Elijah Beauchamp Apr 2023

New Rule-Based Model To Predict Maternal Mortality Risk, Elijah Beauchamp

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Most maternal deaths occur by preventable means [1]. This could be addressed by finding better ways to track the vitals of mothers and better ways of determining maternal mortality risk. This paper uses an association rule mining (ARM) algorithm called Apriori to generate human readable rules to better classify maternal mortality risk. The Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) was used to apply the Apriori algorithm to the data set and python was used to clean the data set. The data set that was used consisted of real maternal health vitals that were then converted into categorical data to apply …

Name-Based Demographic Inference And The Unequal Distribution Of Misrecognition, Jeffrey W. Lockhart, Molly M. King, Christin Munsch

Sociology

Academics and companies increasingly draw on large datasets to understand the social world, and name-based demographic ascription tools are widespread for imputing information that is often missing from these large datasets. These approaches have drawn criticism on ethical, empirical and theoretical grounds. Using a survey of all authors listed on articles in sociology, economics and communication journals in Web of Science between 2015 and 2020, we compared self-identified demographics with name-based imputations of gender and race/ethnicity for 19,924 scholars across four gender ascription tools and four race/ethnicity ascription tools. We found substantial inequalities in how these tools misgender and misrecognize …

Geography As Due Process In Immigration Court, Valeria Gomez Apr 2023

Geography As Due Process In Immigration Court, Valeria Gomez

All Faculty Scholarship

Using the procedural due process framework set forth by the Supreme Court in Mathews v. Eldridge, I argue that the current geographic distribution of immigration courts violates respondents’ rights to procedural due process by inhibiting their ability to appear, present evidence, and secure counsel. In so doing, I highlight the detrimental effects that geography has on remote communities, such as their ability to build pipelines towards access to counsel. Finally, I weigh and propose alternative solutions that balance the government’s interests in efficiency with the respondents’ interests in having a meaningful opportunity to avoid the harsh consequences of deportation.

Teaching Social & Cultural Concepts Through Embodied Practices (Dance) & Specific Language Purpose (Hispanic Dance Vocabulary & Metaphors): A Preview Of Early Survey Data, D. Nicole English, Chita Espino-Bravo Apr 2023

Teaching Social & Cultural Concepts Through Embodied Practices (Dance) & Specific Language Purpose (Hispanic Dance Vocabulary & Metaphors): A Preview Of Early Survey Data, D. Nicole English, Chita Espino-Bravo

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Social and cultural concepts are often problematic to teach to students academically. These concepts often seem abstract, dry, detached, and counter-intuitive to students' experiences. This is particularly the case in teaching concepts related to Diversity (DEIB), including issues related to Colonialism, Slavery, Ethnicity, Social Class, Gender, Marginalization, etc.). Teaching these difficult social concepts through the embodied, cultural practices, such as Music and Hispanic Dance, makes these concepts more approachable, less threatening, non-confrontational, more relevant, and more tangible to students. Theory and research continues to point to the richness of embodied learning (English, Johnson, Mead, Minton, Sloat & Faber). Evidence indicates …

The Effect Of Isbar Tool On Patient Safety, Katy Barbieri Apr 2023

The Effect Of Isbar Tool On Patient Safety, Katy Barbieri

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Ineffective communication among healthcare professionals can result in a decrease in patient safety. It is a leading cause of medical errors and poor patient outcomes. This can be due to the complexity and pace of the interactions, differences in education and training, the organizational hierarchy of the professionals, and human factors such as cognitive overload, the effects of stress, fatigue, distractions, and poor interpersonal communication styles. Leaders must place value on communication. Having a standardized tool for communicating about patients is essential to the delivery of high-quality care. ISBAR is a structured method of communication that allows the person giving …

Climate Change, Site Formation, And Indigenous Use Of Coastlines In Barbuda, Isabel C. Rivera-Collazo, Sophia Perdikaris

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

This article explores the landscape dynamics at the island of Barbuda in the context of changing climate to understand (1) the environmental setting of indigenous settlements; (2) the impacts of current coastal processes; and (3) the potential threats moving forward toward increasing pressure of climate change. Focusing on the site of Seaview, on the east coast of Barbuda, we use geoarchaeological methods to reconstruct the ancient geomorphological setting, investigate changes post-abandonment, and identify the hazards faced under future sea-level projections. Our study shows that (1) sea level stabilization after the Mid-Holocene allowed the formation of coral reefs, seagrass beds and …
