Analysis Of Public Environmental Expenditure : The Case Study Of Jakarta Province, Didi Prabowo Putra, James Thomas Edward

Jurnal Kebijakan Ekonomi

The national struggle for sustainable development influenced the sub-national governments level in composing their policy directions especially public budget policy. Nonetheless, although the environmental protection function is important, it tends to be marginalized in the national budgetary debates. This study, therefore, attempts to analyse the ‘green budget’ allocation and utilization within the Regional Medium-term Development Plan 2013 – 2017 of Jakarta Province. The methodology draws on descriptive analysis of derived data from annual provincial budget documents, and in-depth interview analysis explored potential barriers and drivers give rise to gaps in budget between the allocation and realization stage. Moving Toward Global Feminism: Consciousness Of Borders And Implementing Angry Feminism, Cameron Hallman Apr 2023

Moving Toward Global Feminism: Consciousness Of Borders And Implementing Angry Feminism, Cameron Hallman

English MA Theses

In this Thesis, I argue that in order to get to global feminism, there must be a consciousness of borders, such as racism, islamophobia, sexism, etc, and there must be an implementation of angry feminism to combat patriarchal systems. In "Chapter One: Moving Toward A More Global Feminism," I introduce theorists Said, Djebar, Spivak, and Mohanty, to lay the groundwork for understanding those borders. In "Chapter Two: Under The Western Gaze: An Example of One Arab-American Woman's Experience in the United States," I examine Laila Lalami's The Other Americans and apply the theorists' ideas from Chapter One: Moving Toward A …

Predicting Groundwater Spring Locations From Topographic And Climatic Data Using Maxent Modeling, Ayten Ece Koc

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The World Resources Institute reveals that 17 countries face extremely high levels of water stress. Moreover, with increasing population and industrialization, the gap between water supply and demand increases day by day around the world. Groundwater is a key freshwater source, and springs are important resources as they enable to access groundwater. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor, protect, and manage groundwater springs. The first step in spring management is to recognize and define freshwater resources and to determine the locations of groundwater springs that serve as natural discharge points. Traditionally, field studies have been employed to determine the locations …

A Haptoglobin (Hp) Structural Variant Alters The Effect Of Apoe Alleles On Alzheimer's Disease, Haimeng Bai, Penelope Benchek, Asha R. Kallianpur, Jonathan L. Haines, William S. Bush

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Haptoglobin (HP) is an antioxidant of apolipoprotein E (APOE), and previous reports have shown HP binds with APOE and amyloid beta (Aβ) to aid its clearance. A common structural variant of the HP gene distinguishes it into two alleles: HP1 and HP2. Methods: HP genotypes were imputed in 29 cohorts from the Alzheimer's Disease Genetics Consortium (N = 20,512). Associations between the HP polymorphism and Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk and age of onset through APOE interactions were investigated using regression models. Results: The HP polymorphism significantly impacts AD risk in European-descent individuals (and in meta-analysis with African-descent individuals) by …

The Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio poses many long term concerns for humans and the environment. Over a hundred thousand gallons of hazardous chemicals were released into the air, soil, and waterways after the train derailed and started a fire. Norfolk Southern performed a controlled burn of the chemicals after residents were told to evacuate. Was this really the best solution? Geographic Information Systems (GIS) datasets and tools can be used to get a better understanding of the impact the accident has had on the community. Overlaying datasets of waterways and cropland onto a map can help …

Drones As A Teaching Instrument In The Social Studies Classroom, Michele Morgan Apr 2023

Drones As A Teaching Instrument In The Social Studies Classroom, Michele Morgan

Undergraduate Research Conference

Drones have been considered a hot new technology for classrooms, albeit somewhat inaccessible. They can often be found in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) settings, in classrooms offering Gifted and Talented (GT) programming, or in advanced high school classrooms. It is rarely seen in elementary social studies classrooms, however. And that intrigued me. Could drones become accessible tools for elementary classrooms? We were determined to find out.

I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman Apr 2023

I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman

Student Work

One deep-seated belief in writing, especially writing instruction, is that there is no place for identity and personal pronouns in pieces that are professional and academic. Students are taught this principle as early as elementary school. However, identity can be used in academic writing as a tool to emphasize credibility on certain topics and can shape writing, whether intentionally or not. Anyone’s writing can benefit from a bit of the author’s perspective, but there is an even deeper need for a diverse range of identities in academia. I intend to discuss how ‘objective’ papers are often read as if written …

Exploring The Association Of Brownfield Remediation Status With Socioeconomic Conditions In Wayne County, Mi, Brendan F. O'Leary, Alex B. Hill, Colleen Linn, Mei Lu, Carol J. Miller, Andrew Newman, F. Gianluca Sperone, Qiong Zhang

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Urban neighborhoods with locations of environmental contamination, known as brownfields, impact entire neighborhoods, but corrective environmental remedial action on brownfields is often tracked on an individual property basis, neglecting the larger neighborhood-level impact. This study addresses this impact by examining spatial differences between brownfields with unmitigated environmental concerns (open site) and sites that are considered fully mitigated or closed in urban neighborhoods (closed site) on the US census tract scale in Wayne County, MI. Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s leaking underground storage tank (LUST) database provided brownfield information for Wayne County. Local indicators of spatial association (LISA) …

Wood-Based Carbon Storage In The Mackenzie River Delta: The World's Largest Mapped Riverine Wood Deposit, Alicia Sendrowski, Ellen Wohl, Robert Hilton, Natalie Kramer, Philippa Ascough Apr 2023

Wood-Based Carbon Storage In The Mackenzie River Delta: The World's Largest Mapped Riverine Wood Deposit, Alicia Sendrowski, Ellen Wohl, Robert Hilton, Natalie Kramer, Philippa Ascough

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The Mackenzie River Delta (MRD) has been recognized as an important host of river-derived wood deposits, and Mackenzie River wood has been found across the Arctic Ocean. Nevertheless, we lack estimates of the amount of carbon stored as wood and its age in the delta, representing a gap in carbon cycle estimates. Here, we use very high-resolution satellite imagery and deep learning to map wood deposits in the MRD, combining this with field data to measure the stock and age of wood-based carbon. We find >400,000 individual large wood deposits, collectively storing 3.1 × 1012 g-C, equating to 2 × …

Traveling With A Purpose: Sustainable Tourism, Nina Rossman Apr 2023

Traveling With A Purpose: Sustainable Tourism, Nina Rossman

Honors Theses

The act of traveling is often seen as exciting for many travelers looking for adventure or to experience something different than their everyday routines. However, many current tourism trends force negative burdens onto local communities and environments. For instance, when development increases consumption in an area where natural resources are scarce to begin with, it can put pressure on those resources. There is a certain level of visitor use that an environment can manage; negative impacts occur when the changes in visitor use exceed this limit.[1]

While tourist destinations experience negative impacts from the tourism industry, tourism also supports …

Environment and Society Student Research

This paper outlines a proposal, based on Blackfoot worldview, for a collective method to stand alongside Western qualitative and quantitative methods and highlights the value of collective methods in collaborative social-ecological research. Neither qualitative nor quantitative methods are adequate to disclose a world where all things are alive, where “objects” are subjects—agentive beings in their own right. Most Indigenous cultures understand and experience the world as a network of living beings, a collective, with whom they are interrelated/connected and therefore, any efforts to collaborate with Indigenous peoples must acknowledge comprehensive relational animacy. Applying coproduction principles in concert with Blackfoot ways …
