The Need For Embodied Dramaturgy: The Laramie Project And Generation Z, Carin Silkaitis, Zoe Rose Kriegler-Wenk Jul 2023

The Need For Embodied Dramaturgy: The Laramie Project And Generation Z, Carin Silkaitis, Zoe Rose Kriegler-Wenk

Faculty, Staff, and Students

20 years after the murder of Matthew Shepard, I introduced The Laramie Project to a group of undergraduate students. Observing cast members' first experience of the characters, a troubling lack of empathy to the complexity of this tragic story became apparent. Of primary concern was that decades of progress made towards LGBTQIA equality stripped this story of its relevance. Geographic and generational bias is natural and expected but ultimately requires a new dramaturgical approach. We offer reflections on the methodology developed to address this gap: an embodied dramaturgical approach to our pre-production work culminating in a full cast and crew …

Economic Performance Amongst English Seaside Towns, Sheela Agarwal, Steven Jakes, Sanzidur Rahman, Stephen J. Page Jul 2023

Economic Performance Amongst English Seaside Towns, Sheela Agarwal, Steven Jakes, Sanzidur Rahman, Stephen J. Page

Plymouth Business School

Within urban and tourism studies, although much research has focused on uneven city prosperity and competitiveness, little is known about factors influencing seaside town economic performance. We adopt a place-based approach to understand its determinants amongst 58 of England’s largest seaside towns drawing on a bespoke database. Through Partial Least Square analysis, Spearman’s Rank Correlation and general linear regression modelling for panel data with random effects, we identify the ‘leaders’ and ‘laggers’ along with a set of associated socio-economic characteristics. These insights enhance understanding of how and why economic performance differs amongst these towns. We highlight implications for addressing such …

Using Business Databases To Inform Data Privacy Practices, James Henry Smith

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Data Privacy is an active practice that requires users to actively participate in informed consenting for their personal data protection. Part of that process is gathering information about the companies that request access to users data. In this lightning talk, an information literacy librarian will walk participants through the metacognitive process of deciding which data to share with companies when interacting with their online interfaces. This process starts with acknowledging the value of personal data collection, then a walk through which business databases users can engage with to better understand how their data exhaust is bought and sold to data …

An Observed Increase In Cardiovascular And Respiratory-Disease Related Hospitalizations And Mortality In An Area Surrounding A Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment Plant, Liana Isabelle Dela Torre Baconguis Jul 2023

An Observed Increase In Cardiovascular And Respiratory-Disease Related Hospitalizations And Mortality In An Area Surrounding A Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment Plant, Liana Isabelle Dela Torre Baconguis

LSU Master's Theses

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is highly correlated with respiratory and cardiovascular disease incidence. The generation of oxidative stress is a major way by which PM can damage the body. Environmentally persistent free radical-containing PM are generated by combustion processes and are capable of exerting increased damage on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems due to their ability to remain stable and regenerate reactive oxygen species for up to five years. Clean Harbors, LLC operates a thermal treatment plant near the city of Colfax, LA in Central Louisiana. Its regular open burning of explosives causes disturbances to the community, such as loud …

A Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Analysis Of Reimbursement Trends In Laryngology From 2000 To 2021, James R. Xu, Robert R. Lorenz, Kathleen M. Mulligan, Todd D. Otteson, Nicole C. Maronian, Paul C. Bryson

Student Scholarship

Objective: The purpose of this study is to characterize Medicare reimbursement trends for laryngology procedures over the last two decades. Methods: This analysis used CMS' Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) Look-Up Tool to determine the reimbursement rate of 48 common laryngology procedures, which were divided into four groups based on their practice setting and clinical use: office-based, airway, voice disorders, and dysphagia. The PFS reports the physician service reimbursement for “facilities” and global reimbursement for “non-facilities”. The annual reimbursement rate for each procedure was averaged across all localities and adjusted for inflation. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of each procedure's …

Bankruptcy Overload, Laura N. Coordes Jul 2023

Bankruptcy Overload, Laura N. Coordes

Georgia Law Review

The bankruptcy system is overloaded. Those who use it, whether debtors or non-debtors, frequently seek to extract more out of a bankruptcy than the process can, practically and legally, provide. The goals and boundaries of bankruptcy law have always been subject to debate, making the system particularly susceptible to taking on more than it can bear. This Article defines and explains the concept of bankruptcy overload, illustrating that many of the problems currently plaguing the bankruptcy system derive from overloading it. In addition, although overloading the system may create problems in individual cases, this Article shows that bankruptcy overload is …

The Bearing Earth: Colonization, Conservation, And Political Ecology In Costa Rica (Coto Brus 1948 - Present), Pablo Alonso Arias-Benavides

Latin American Studies ETDs

This thesis presents two questions: How are relationships between people in Coto Brus and the land – specifically, forest – mediated by social, political, and economic forces? How are personal and collective identities expressed through relationship with the landscape? I chose Coto Brus because it is a forested region of Costa Rica which was populated with state support in the 1950s, and because it is my father’s hometown. In order to understand the subjective experiences of Costa Ricans involved in deforestation and reforestation, I performed interviews in the canton, visited conservation sites, and analyzed historical sources. This study combines multiscale …

Implementation Of Design Tools For Relational Thinking In Design For Social Innovation - A Pluralistic Perspective From Weitou Village’S Oyster Reef Restoration Project, Jixiang Jiang, Yizao Wu, Shu Zhang

ServDes Conference Series

When faced with an increasingly complex environmental crisis, the topic of an ontological transition from the current dualistic-driven ontology to a relational one is gaining importance in multidisciplinary discussions. Modern design has been considered as an essential part of the responsibility for the current crisis, and transformation is imminent (Fry, T., 2019; Fry, T., & Tlostanova, M., 2020). Moreover, a key research direction is emerging: to open up design ontology discussions by incorporating pluralistic cultural perspectives. Service design has grown dramatically in China in recent years (ArtTech innozone&CSDC,2020). On one hand, its development has included many Western-centered design paradigms and …

Animal Welfare Deserts: Human And Nonhuman Animal Inequities, Laura Reese, Xiaomeng Li

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Residents of distressed areas of inner cities have less access to many of life’s necessities and amenities than their more well-off counterparts. Geographic proximity has been identified as a primary barrier to accessing care for pets potentially creating animal welfare deserts. This project addresses three questions: Are there visible animal welfare deserts in distressed urban centers?; What human inequities are most strongly related to animal welfare deserts?; and What might be done to address these inequities? Using business location and census data in the city of Detroit, this research identifies distinct animal welfare deserts finding that more prosperous areas have …

The seasonal availability of light and micronutrients strongly regulates productivity in the Southern Ocean, restricting biological utilization of macronutrients and CO2 drawdown. Mineral dust flux is a key conduit for micronutrients to the Southern Ocean and a critical mediator of multimillennial-scale atmospheric CO2 oscillations. While the role of dust-borne iron (Fe) in Southern Ocean biogeochemistry has been examined in detail, manganese (Mn) availability is also emerging as a potential driver of past, present, and future Southern Ocean biogeochemistry. Here, we present results from fifteen bioassay experiments along a north–south transect in the undersampled eastern Pacific sub-Antarctic zone. In addition to …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Financial Performance Of Largest Teaching Hospitals, Karima Lalani, Jeffrey Helton, Francine R Vega, Marylou Cardenas-Turanzas, Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer, James R Langabeer Jul 2023

The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Financial Performance Of Largest Teaching Hospitals, Karima Lalani, Jeffrey Helton, Francine R Vega, Marylou Cardenas-Turanzas, Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer, James R Langabeer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted hospital operations. Anecdotal evidence suggests financial performance likewise suffered, yet little empirical research supports this claim. This study aimed to explore the impact of the pandemic on the financial performance of the most prominent academic hospitals in the United States. Data from the 115 largest major teaching hospitals in the United States were extracted from the American Hospital Directory for three years (2019-2021). We hypothesized that the year and region would moderate the relationship between a hospital's return on assets (financial performance) and specific operational variables. We found evidence through descriptive statistics and multivariate moderated regressions …

泰尔指数在评分者间信度中的应用:与组内相关系数的比较, 潘 天舒, 阴 悦

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation |

An Application Of Theil Indexes For The Interrater Reliability: A Comparison With Intraclass Correlations, Tianshu Pan, Yue Yin Jul 2023

An Application Of Theil Indexes For The Interrater Reliability: A Comparison With Intraclass Correlations, Tianshu Pan, Yue Yin

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

This study proposes to apply the Theil-index ratios for the interrater reliability. We discuss the theoretical foundations and examine its function empirically using real data. Our analyses show that Theil-index rations and intraclass correlation (ICC) estimates are highly correlated. However, ICC may underestimate the interrater reliability by some extreme disagreement among raters and be more likely to be influenced by the extreme disagreement. As Theil-index ratios overcome the limitations of ICC to some degree, it seems that Theil-index ratios provide an alternative to evaluating interrater reliability, at least under certain conditions, e.g., when outliers exist in the data, it is …

No Place Like Home? A Dialogical Journey With Shlomo Biderman, Daniel Raveh Jul 2023

No Place Like Home? A Dialogical Journey With Shlomo Biderman, Daniel Raveh

Comparative Philosophy

This paper aims to think or rethink the concept of home as the contemporary avatar of the age-old question of self-identity. In dialogue with Shlomo Biderman, a comparative philosopher without borders who feels at home both in Jewish and Indian sources, the author assembles a philosophical jigsaw-puzzle made of different materials from different thinking traditions in attempt to reveal a new picture of home (and self) compatible with the changing world of immigration, relocation, dislocation and displacement, a world of emigrants, refugees and exiles, in which we live. The puzzle pieces include Plato’s cave, Isaiah Berlin’s “inner citadel”, Shmuel Yosef …

The Dialectic Relationship Between The Sustainable Development Of Tourism And Economic Challenges In Jordan, Faisal Almayouf Jul 2023

The Dialectic Relationship Between The Sustainable Development Of Tourism And Economic Challenges In Jordan, Faisal Almayouf

Information Sciences Letters

This study aims to explore tourism supply and demand data before and after the Corona pandemic to determine the extent of the tourism sectors contribution to the gross domestic product in Jordan. It also aims to adopt tourism as an economic, media, and cultural interface that should be developed and sustained through specialized cadres in tourism work. The study relied on an analytical-descriptive approach. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to study the relationship between tourism income and spending. The findings revealed a direct average relationship between the two variables before the pandemic, which was about (+0.55). In contrast, the …

Tools for assessing multiple exposures across several domains (e.g., physical, chemical, and social) are of growing importance in social and environmental epidemiology because of their value in uncovering disparities and their impact on health outcomes. Here we describe work done within the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)-wide Cohort Study to build a combined exposure index. Our index considered both environmental hazards and social stressors simultaneously with national coverage for a 10-year period. Our goal was to build this index and demonstrate its utility for assessing differences in exposure for pregnancies enrolled in the ECHO-wide Cohort Study. Our unitless …

Distribution Of Carbon Dioxide Emissions And Potential Consequences For Their Reduction In Louisiana, Mumtahinah Zia Jul 2023

Distribution Of Carbon Dioxide Emissions And Potential Consequences For Their Reduction In Louisiana, Mumtahinah Zia

LSU Master's Theses

As a part of a global concern, the United States is targeting to reach carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction goals along with other countries. However, to better understand optimal strategies of reducing CO2 emissions, given the diversity of the resource and economic base of regions in the United States, an understanding is needed of how the components that make up total final demand including households, industries and trade contribute to the overall well-being for these regions, specifically at the state level. Moreover, there are strategies that assist in meeting CO2 reduction policy targets. In this thesis, I have addressed these issues …

Cash Usage In Poland In 2020: Insights Into The Role Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Spatial Aspects, Radosław Kotkowski, Arkadiusz Manikowski

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

The study explores the factors likely to induce Polish customers to pay by cash, instead of payment cards, for goods and services they are purchasing. The basis of our investigation is microdata obtained in 2020, during the “Payment Habits in Poland in 2020” study, which was conducted by Narodowy Bank Polski (National Bank of Poland) in 2020. The analysis is performed using the two-stage Heckman approach. In the first stage, card adoption factors are analyzed using a probit model; then, in the second stage, the OLS model is employed to analyze the propensity to pay by cash, despite having a …

Sportsman's Paradox: Conservationism And Social Progress In Modern Louisiana, Jacob T. Gautreaux

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, sportsmen increasingly identified Louisiana as a destined paradise due to the abundant flora and fauna. Confirmed in the legendary visits of Theodore Roosevelt in the early 1900s, the conception soon served a dual purpose as individuals like the Tabasco Sauce patriarch, E. A. McIlhenny, coopted the visualization as a lure for business investment into the nascent industrial interests within the coastal region of the state. However, it should be noted that in the 1930s and beyond, cultural conservationists like McIlhenny and Caroline Dormon preserved elements of under-documented cultures throughout the state, although usually …

How Antitrust Failed Workers By Eric A. Posner, Maria Arabella M. Robles Jul 2023

How Antitrust Failed Workers By Eric A. Posner, Maria Arabella M. Robles

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

IN RECENT YEARS, GROWING ECONOMIC INEQUALITY and anxieties about market power, monopolization, and other such concerns have rejuvenated competition and antitrust law and policy. It is well known that antitrust enhances competition by addressing issues of monopolization, price-fixing arrangements, and cartels, among other anticompetitive practices in markets. This allows dynamic competition to flourish in markets and ensures that consumers are provided with competitive prices and product choices. Although the negative impacts of market concentration are frequently recognized in the context of product markets, its impact on labour markets and the workers therein have largely been unexplored until recently. Professor Eric …

Gender (In)Equity In Global Mental Health Research: A Call To Action, The Women In Global Mental Health Research Group, Kelly Rose-Clarke

Faculty Publications

In this commentary, we build on work by Gurung and colleagues which highlighted gender inequity in the global mental health research workforce in Nepal (Gurung et al., 2021). We seek to increase awareness of the under-representation of women in global mental health research and its consequences, and we call for change. By women, we refer to all people who identify as women, including trans people. The commentary is informed by conversations with women who are global mental health researchers in the Global North and South at various stages of their careers.

Who Puts The "Support" In Supportive Housing? The Impact Of Housing Staff On Resident's Well-Being, And The Potential Moderating Role Of Self-Determination, Kenna Estell Dickard Jul 2023

Who Puts The "Support" In Supportive Housing? The Impact Of Housing Staff On Resident's Well-Being, And The Potential Moderating Role Of Self-Determination, Kenna Estell Dickard

Dissertations and Theses

The provision of residential and community-based services for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) has become increasingly important following the deinstitutionalization movement. Much of the existing research on supportive housing focuses on housing outcomes rather than exploring how the program helps its residents thrive in the broader community. This study draws upon data collected from 176 people with SMI residing in 16 supportive housing locations in Portland, Oregon. Analyses employed an ecological approach, exploring how housing staff support relates to residents' well-being at three levels of analysis: loneliness (interpersonal level), residential satisfaction (housing and neighborhood level), and sense of community …

Platonism, De Re, And (Philosophy Of) Mathematical Practice, Marco Panza Jul 2023

Platonism, De Re, And (Philosophy Of) Mathematical Practice, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

The chapter advances a reformulation of the classical problem of the nature of mathematical objects (if any), here called “Plato’s problem,” in line with the program of a philosophy of mathematical practice. It then provides a sketch of a platonist solution, following the same perspective. This solution disregards as nonsensical the question of the existence of abstract, and specifically mathematical, objects, by rather focusing on the modalities of our access to them: objects (in general, both concrete and abstract) are regarded as individual contents that we have (or can have) a de re epistemic access to. The question of the …
