New Journal Studies Ancient Transoceanic Travel
New Journal Studies Ancient Transoceanic Travel
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The inaugural issue of a new scholarly journal of interest to students of the Book of Mormon has recently become available. Volume 1 of Pre-Columbiana: A Journal of Long-Distance Contacts is a double issue (June and December 1998) of 160 pages. The journal is the product of two distinct streams of interest in the topic of ancient transoceanic travel. On one hand, the key contributors are senior academic scholars who have a long record of research and publication on this subject. Believing there is substantial evidence for such early voyages, these people have long contradicted the orthodox view that no …

Farms Publishes Abridged Book On King Benjamin's Speech
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
King Benjamin's speech in the first six chapters of Mosiah is one of the masterpieces of Christian literature. In 1996 FARMS sponsored a symposium on this classic text. The papers that were presented (published as King Benjamin's Speech: "That Ye May Learn Wisdom") constituted the most substantial collection of studies on this powerful and fascinating speech.

Journal Looks At Enigmatic Tree Of Life Stone
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the early 1950s archaeologist M. Wells Jakeman claimed that a carved stone monument unearthed in Izapa, Mexico, in 1941 depicted Lehi's vision of the tree of life as reported in the Book of Mormon. As is true for any archaeological find, the accuracy of that initial assessment of the stone dubbed Izapa Stela 5 will either stand or begin to fall in light of further evidence and study, though a definitive determination regarding the stela may simply not be possible.

On 6 April 1999 revered scholar Dr. Hugh W. Nibley concluded the Book of Abraham Lecture Series by addressing the topic "Abraham's Creation Drama." Speaking to a capacity crowd in Brigham Young University's Joseph Smith Building auditorium and to hundreds of other people gathered in overflow rooms, Nibley highlighted intriguing connections between truths revealed in the Book of Abraham and worship practices in temples both ancient and modern.

A profound love for the scriptures has led James E. Faulconer, dean of General Education and Honors and professor of philosophy at Brigham Young University, to assemble the scripture study plan set forth in his book Scripture Study: Tools and Suggestions, recently published by FARMS. In this book Faulconer shares the study techniques he has refined through personal study and developed during his many years of teaching the scriptures to students at BYU.

In February, Daniel C. Peterson and E. Jan Wilson of the FARMS Center for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts (CPART) visited with officials in Beirut, Lebanon, and at the Vatican Apostolic Library in Rome to determine the feasibility of digitally imaging ancient religious manuscripts for inclusion in a CD-ROM database. If undertaken, the project stands to benefit not only the many communities whose religious heritages will be preserved, but also Westerners who know very little about Syriac, Christian Arabic, and Armenian theology, liturgy, philosophy, and history-much of it relevant to the study of early Christianity.

Sermon On The Mount Symposium Convened
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
At a FARMS symposium held on the BYU campus on 6 February 1999, John W. Welch discussed his newly revised and updated book, Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple and Sermon on the Mount: An Approach to 3 Nephi 11-18 and Matthew 5-7. He also responded to comments from a panel of five BYU professors who explored the implications of his thesis that the Sermon on the Mount is best understood in a temple context.

Reprint Examines Chiasmus In Ancient Literature
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Chiasmus in Antiquity: Structures, Analyses, Exegesis, a groundbreaking book out of print for a decade, is now published for the first time in the United State1 as a FARMS reprint (see the enclosed order form) . First released in 1981 in Germany, this volume of essays edited by Professor John W. Welch devotes more than three hundred pages to identifying and analyzing chiasmus in ancient texts. Chiasmus is a form of literary parallelism in which the elements of a textual passage are first presented in one order and then repeated in reverse order.

How Do Pedestrians Perceive The Safety, Comfort, And Usefulness Of A Walking Space? An Exploratory Study Of Pedestrian Perception, Amanda Rifqa Marisa, Achmad Hery Fuad
How Do Pedestrians Perceive The Safety, Comfort, And Usefulness Of A Walking Space? An Exploratory Study Of Pedestrian Perception, Amanda Rifqa Marisa, Achmad Hery Fuad
Smart City
Car-oriented development has brought several negative impacts on human quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to walkability as one of the essential aspects of it, especially in the urban area. In the meantime, most research on walking and walkability still overlooks the role of the pedestrian's perspective in examining walkability. Hence, this research tries to fill the gap in walkability research by exploring the pedestrian perspectives on the safety, comfort, and usefulness of walking space as the three overlapping aspects between walkability and walking needs. This research took context in Suryakencana, Bogor City, Indonesia. To …

Since November 2019, most countries across the globe have suffered from the disastrous consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic which redefined every aspect of human life. Given the inevitable spread and transmission of the virus, it is critical to acknowledge the factors that catalyse transmission of the disease. This research investigates the relation of the external demographic parameters such as total population, population density and weighted population density on the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression were utilized to identify the relation between the population-related variables and the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia using data from …

Article Explains How New Testament Books Were Chosen
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Within a century of the death of Jesus Christ, Christians had produced a body of religious writings that preserved and complemented their presumably rich oral tradition. This small but diverse library included various accounts of Christ's birth, collections of his sayings, reports of his wondrous deeds and the missionary activities of his apostles, Paul's letters, homilies, and more. A few centuries later, some of these writings became canonized as accepted scriptures to the exclusion of others. Who made those crucial decisions? How, when, and under what circumstances was our present New Testament canon determined?

The Bible And The Dead Sea Scrolls
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the June 1999 issue of Bible Review, Sidnie White Crawford, associate professor and chair of the Department of Classics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, considers what the Dead Sea Scrolls reveal about the position of early Jews on the emendation, authority, and canonicity of biblical texts. Crawford begins by noting that neither a canonical Bible nor even a fixed text of the Torah (Genesis-Deuteronomy) existed when the Dead Sea Scrolls were written (250 B.C.-A.D. 70).
