The Relationship Between Water Temperature And Proximity To Surface Urban Heat Islands Within The Lower Chesapeake Bay Watershed For The Summer Of 2019, Sarah Kerner Jul 2023

The Relationship Between Water Temperature And Proximity To Surface Urban Heat Islands Within The Lower Chesapeake Bay Watershed For The Summer Of 2019, Sarah Kerner

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) are land surfaces with high concentrations of impervious surfaces like roofs, roads, sidewalks and other infrastructures that trap, absorb, and re-emit heat throughout the day/night and typically present higher temperatures than their surrounding rural areas. In this study, I evaluate how presence of and distance to SUHIs are associated with water temperature in the lower Chesapeake Bay watershed for the summer of 2019. When heavy precipitation events occur, flooding creates stormwater runoff, which is exposed to the hotter temperatures in urban areas. This introduces thermal pollution to nearby rivers and streams disrupting aquatic ecosystems. The …

To better understand how receptive society will be to these types of vehicles, this study focused on the perceived level of trust in autonomous vehicles (AVs) by rural drivers and passengers. An online survey that examined the behavioral and value-based perspectives of drivers was developed and distributed to respondents across the United States, and a total of 1,247 valid responses were collected and analyzed. Based on the results, rural (and non-rural) respondents had similar levels of trust when …

Assessing The Impacts Of Increasing The Availability Of Non-Automobile Modes Of Transportation On Carbon Emissions And Accessibility In Worcester, William Schechter Jul 2023

Assessing The Impacts Of Increasing The Availability Of Non-Automobile Modes Of Transportation On Carbon Emissions And Accessibility In Worcester, William Schechter

Sustainability and Social Justice

Over-reliance on cars in Worcester, Massachusetts represents a significant barrier to the introduction of accessible and ecologically sound modes of transportation. Through increases in frequency, accessibility, and service area, bus transportation in Worcester can offer a viable alternative to personal vehicle usage. In conjunction with the changes to buses, improvements to infrastructure for non-motorist transportation modes such as cycling, walking and assistive equipment will further reduce reliance on personal motor vehicles. Additional policies discouraging the use of motor vehicles is also suggested, with limited traffic zones and vehicle weight restrictions being implemented. With the developments and policy outlined within this …

The Duality Of Deaths In The Sea, Debangana Chatterjee Jul 2023

The Duality Of Deaths In The Sea, Debangana Chatterjee

Popular Media

“Loss of life is tragic, period. However, one cannot help but notice the selective mourning, which seems to stem from sociopolitical apathy towards the refugees. The tragic agony in the death of the refugees is normalised and almost in the same breath, the deaths of the affluent reverberated across the world.”

This article draws a contrast between the rescue efforts and media attention devoted to the Titan submersible tragedy and the deaths of asylum seekers off the coast of Greece in June 2023: “two incidents of tragic deaths in the international seas, miles apart both in terms of location and …

Human-Machine Communication

The aim of this article is to more precisely define the field of research on the automation of communication, which is still only vaguely discernible. The central thesis argues that to be able to fully grasp the transformation of the media environment associated with the automation of communication, our view must be broadened from a preoccupation with direct interactions between humans and machines to societal communication. This more widely targeted question asks how the dynamics of societal communication change when communicative artificial intelligence—in short: communicative AI—is integrated into aspects of societal communication. To this end, we recommend an approach that …

Constrained Tropical Land Temperature-Precipitation Sensitivity Reveals Decreasing Evapotranspiration And Faster Vegetation Greening In Cmip6 Projections, Boyuan Zhu, Yongzhou Cheng, Xuyue Hu, Yuanfang Chai, Wouter R. Berghuijs, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Louise Slater

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Over the tropical land surface, accurate estimates of future changes in temperature, precipitation and evapotranspiration are crucial for ecological sustainability, but remain highly uncertain. Here we develop a series of emergent constraints (ECs) by using historical and future outputs from the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Earth System Models under the four basic Shared Socio-economic Pathway scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585). Results show that the temperature sensitivity to precipitation during 2015–2100, which varies substantially in the original CMIP6 outputs, becomes systematically negative across SSPs after application of the EC, with absolute values between −1.10 °C mm−1 day …

Mothers Born Or Produced?: An Analysis Of The Mother-Daughter Relationship In Well-Behaved Indian Women, Shivalika Agarwal, Nagendra Kumar

Journal of International Women's Studies

The word motherhood has been used for centuries without thorough examination of what it encompasses. Literature exhibits the changing reality and needs of mothering irrespective of the outcome: imposed motherhood, and institutionalized mothers. Motherhood has been bifurcated in meaning as “the potential relationship of any woman to her powers of reproduction and to children; and the institution, which aims at ensuring that that potential-- and all women--shall remain under male control” (Rich 13). A woman’s biological capacity to bear and nurture a child has been a significant factor in the existence of human life. Another facet of this is the …

Female Representation In Hard Times By Charles Dickens, د / نبراس احمد عبدالله Jul 2023

Female Representation In Hard Times By Charles Dickens, د / نبراس احمد عبدالله

Midad AL-Adab Refereed Quarterly Journal

The fight for women's emancipation has existed for centuries, dormant in the previous era. Still, the sprouting of radical activity in the women's movement gathered impetus and peaked in the late Victorian era. The feminist agitation of the era was a noticeable feature that shocked the Victorian conservative. The term was first used by French dramatist Alexander Dumas in 1872. From the Hebrew Bible and Greek philosophy to the present, the female tends to be defined by negative reference-weak, docile, virile, and sensual. The study of Victorian feminists is a source of interest to the extent of modern feminism. The …

This descriptive study aims to investigate how grammatical tone is realized in Cigogo verbs. The information was gathered through interviews and oral history techniques in the villages of Muungano, Ilolo, and Ndebwe in the Mvumi division. The replies from the interviews and the storytelling were captured using an MP3 recorder. The verb forms were then evoked for the analysis of the tone patterns based on the autosegmental theory. The findings show that Cigogo uses a grammatical tone to convey the perfective aspect, imperative mood, and reflexiveness in the past tense (immediate past). The kind of verb stem determines where the …

Time-Varying Predictability Of Financial Stress On Inequality In United Kingdom, Edmond Berisha, David Gabauer, Rangan Gupta, Jacobus Nel Jul 2023

Time-Varying Predictability Of Financial Stress On Inequality In United Kingdom, Edmond Berisha, David Gabauer, Rangan Gupta, Jacobus Nel

Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose: Existing empirical evidence suggests that episodes of financial stress (crises) can act as driver of growth of inequality. Consequently, in this study, the authors explore the time-varying predictive power of an index of financial stress for growth in income (and consumption) inequality in the UK. The authors focus on the UK since income (and consumption) inequality data are available at a high frequency, i.e. on a quarterly basis for over 40 years (June, 1975 to March, 2016). Design/methodology/approach: The authors use Wang and Rossi's approach to analyze the time-varying impact of financial stress on inequality. Hence, the method provides …
