Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are integral to the development of complex tumor microenvironments (TMEs) and can execute disparate cellular programs in response to extracellular cues. However, upstream signaling processes underpinning this phenotypic plasticity remain to be elucidated. Here, we report that concordant AXL-STAT3 signaling in TAMs is triggered by lung cancer cells or cancer-associated fibroblasts in the cytokine milieu. This paracrine action drives TAM differentiation toward a tumor-promoting "M2-like" phenotype with upregulation of CD163 and putative mesenchymal markers, contributing to TAM heterogeneity and diverse cellular functions. One of the upregulated markers, CD44, mediated by AXL-IL-11-pSTAT3 signaling cascade, enhances macrophage ability to …

Catalyzing Change For Equitable Participation, Liza Bondurant, Seema Rivera
Journal of Practitioner Research
This manuscript discusses the Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycles designed to help math teacher-researchers (TRs) create more equitable discourse patterns in their classrooms. Before the first cycle, TRs were asked to complete gender and race implicit assessment tests (IATs). Then, TRs planned and recorded a video of themselves facilitating a math discussion. Next, math teacher educators (MTEs) used the Equity QUantified In Participation (EQUIP) classroom observation instrument to code and analyze the discussion. Subsequently, TRs had an opportunity to reflect on the EQUIP and IAT results and set goals for making their teaching practices more equitable. MTEs provided guidance …

During the onset of neuropathic pain from a variety of etiologies, nociceptors become hypersensitized, releasing neurotransmitters and other factors from centrally-projecting nerve terminals within the dorsal spinal cord. Consequently, glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) in the spinal cord are activated and mediate the release of proinflammatory cytokines that act to enhance pain transmission and sensitize mechanical non-nociceptive fibers which ultimately results in light touch hypersensitivity, clinically observed as allodynia. Pramipexole, a D2/D3 preferring agonist, is FDA-approved for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and demonstrates efficacy in animal models of inflammatory pain. The clinical-stage investigational drug, R(+) enantiomer of pramipexole, dexpramipexole, …

Illuminating The Ozarks: A View Of Ozark Mountain Culture Through The Lens Of Regional Craft, Jessica Erwin
Illuminating The Ozarks: A View Of Ozark Mountain Culture Through The Lens Of Regional Craft, Jessica Erwin
Theses and Dissertations
The Ozarks Mountain region has a rich and lengthy cultural heritage. This heritage includes the creation of crafts with attributes unique to the Ozarks. In 1978 the Ozarks Regional Commission, a federal-state partnership, conducted a survey of crafts and craftsmen in the Ozarks. This thesis examines using digitized images of 35mm slides from the report Crafts: The Human Dimension to build a web exhibit about the history and culture of the Ozarks Mountain Region. The topics covered include geography, migration patterns, and craft items of the region.
Hmong Narratives As Testimony, Pa N. Vue
Hmong Narratives As Testimony, Pa N. Vue
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
Refugees are often depicted in studies and popular media as helpless and in need of rescuing. In the song “Hmoob Zaj,” which was released on YouTube in 2019, Hmong rapper Shong Lee humanizes Hmong refugee experiences by sharing a story that has been “secreted” (M. Vang, 2021, p. 10) by the U.S. government. Through the public archiving of this story on YouTube, Lee presents what Espiritu (2014) calls an “oppositional narrative” (p. 163) that speaks back to the empire. He asserts a critical stance to challenge the dominant narrative, validate the experiential knowledge of Hmong people, contribute to Hmong collective …

Climate Change Journalism In Pakistan: Ethical Deliberations, Muhammad Ittefaq, Shafiq Ahmad Kamboh, Ayesha Ashfaq
School of Communication Studies - Faculty Scholarship
In the 21st century, research on climate journalism has received exponential growth globally. However, the media’s ethical role in covering climate change has not sufficiently been explored enough. In this chapter, we provide a broad overview of climate change journalism in Pakistan, the role of stakeholders that are directly involved in this crisis, and further highlighted the need to follow the UNESCO-led ethical principles and deliberations by the local climate journalism. We conclude that though a great deal of attention has been paid by the local scholars and scientists to highlight different dimensions of climate emergency, however, the findings of …

Methods For Designing Woven Textile-Forms: Examples From A Pedagogical Textile Design Workshop, Juri-Apollo Drews, Holly Mcquillan, Aurélie Mosse
Textile Intersections Conference Series
When designing Woven Textile-forms, both the 3D object and the textile it is composed of need to be de-veloped simultaneously, a process requiring an adaptation of currently established methods from both textile and fashion design. This paper provides an overview of existing examples for woven form-construction approaches through the lens of fabric (non-)rectangularity. It subsequently presents the method of flattening a 3D form into a weaveable 2D format, and the alternative weaving methods of Modular Weaving, Non-binary Weaving and Multi-selvedge Weaving destined at constructing non-rectangular seamless Woven Textile-forms. It further describes a range of associated prototyping and visualisation techniques including …

The Neo-Couture project investigates the intersection of haute couture principles and emerging digital technologies. In this paper, we introduce a developing Neo-Couture framework, grounded in five key areas: Humanness, Interactions, Hierarchy, Material Agency, and Bespokeness/Rarity. Drawing upon the concept of ‘intra-action’ (Barad, 2007:33) from agential realism, the study explores how humans and computational tools mutually influence each other, offering fresh insights into creative processes in fashion and textiles. Where previous research has aimed to categorise AI tools; here, tools are considered 'material agents,' emphasising the emotional and agential aspects of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The concept of 'intra-action' is important in …

In the fall of 1978 Professor Joseph P. Schlutz, Professor of Talmudic and Rabbinic literature at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, conducted a semester-long seminar in which he and the class together considered various Jewish elements present in the Book of Mormon. The lectures considered such topic~ as the concept of God, cosmology, prophecy, law, sacrifice, prayer, liturgy, festivals, family and political institutions, messianism, and views of the afterlife. About 20 students participated in the seminar and through the generosity of several of them , F.A.R.M.S. has been able to obtain two sets of cassette recordings of the sessions. In …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Virtual Reality Role-Playing In Debating Repatriation Of Artworks In Active Learning Art History Classes, James Hutson, Trent Olsen
Faculty Scholarship
This paper addresses the pressing issue of repatriation debates for artworks, heightened by notable instances like the return of the Benin Bronzes and discussions around the Elgin Marbles. Given the challenges in conducting effective classroom debates on such sensitive topics due to the pandemic, generational shifts in learning preferences, and increased student anxiety, this study identifies a gap in the integration of active learning strategies in a virtual setting. The primary aim of this research is to examine the efficacy of virtual reality role-playing games (VR-RPGs) in enhancing student engagement, immersion, presence, and learning outcomes within a virtual learning environment …

A Review Of The Role Of Tendon Stem Cells In Tendon-Bone Regeneration, Junjie Chen, Chuanfeng Jiang, Lu Yin, Yingqi Liu, Yue He, Sen Li, Huarui Shen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Tendon-bone injuries are a prevalent health concern associated with sports and other physically demanding activities. These injuries have a limited innate healing ability, often leading to the formation of scar tissue rather than the regeneration of healthy tendon tissue. This scar tissue results from excessive fibrosis during the early healing process and often leads to reduced tendon function and an increased risk of reinjury. Traditionally, surgical reconstruction has been the primary treatment for tendon-bone injuries. However, restoring the natural structure and mechanical properties of tendons after surgical reconstruction presents a considerable challenge. Recently, the potential of stem cell therapy has …

Given the scarcity of valid and reliable scales this study aimed to find out the standard properties of parental scale competence for children with autism spectrum disorder according to the two-parameter logistic model. The study sample consisted of 795 parents. The instrument for the study was developed after reviewing previous literature. The factor analysis revealed that there was one trait behind the performance on the study scale; the results also revealed that the data fit the two-parameter logistic model; an item information function was extracted for the items, and the highest and the lowest values were revealed. Moreover, results of …

The Perspectives Of Recovered Drug Addicts On The Causes Of Addictions And The Stigma Surrounding Addicts In The Uae, Maha Salim Saif Alketbi, Fakir Al-Gharaibeh
Information Sciences Letters
This study aims to identify the causes of drug use and the forms of social stigma surrounding drug addiction from the point of view of recovered drug addicts. Adopting a descriptive approach, the researchers based their conclusions on the results of a questionnaire that was responded to by 200 recovered drug addicts who have attended rehabilitation centres in the Sharjah. The study revealed that that main reasons for drug use were peer influence, followed by curiosity and the desire to experiment with drugs. Meanwhile, the majority of the respondents (approximately 44.0%) reported that they first used drugs due to peer …

Trust The Masked Stranger: Unveiling The African Stokvel's Blockchain Enticement, Norwell Zhakata, Ntombovuyo Wayi-Mgwebi
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Blockchain technologies offer platforming services on which African stokvels can be implemented. stokvels emerged as cooperative and self-help schemes for marginalized communities in South Africa. stokvel members contributing to a blockchain-managed common fund do not have to worry about trusting their peers because transactions on a blockchain are claimed to be transparent and irrefutable. Blockchain technology’s consensus mechanism and its decentralized architecture ensure that authority is shared amongst peers, and none has monopolistic powers over the common fund. The blockchain is thus, at face value, seen as espousing the true spirit of cooperative and participative decision-making akin to African Ubuntu …
Masculinity And Gender Roles In Selected Stories By Haruki Murakami, Maha Hamed Issa
Masculinity And Gender Roles In Selected Stories By Haruki Murakami, Maha Hamed Issa
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Haruki Murakami (1949) is a Japanese novelist who uses fiction to portray modern man's condition. Sexual identity, loneliness, and nostalgia are common themes in his works. Men without Women (2014) is a collection of short stories in which Murakami reverses gender roles to show men's desperate seek for companionship in their lives. According to Hans Robert Jauss (1921-1997), a German literary theorist, there is no identical interpretation of any literary text. Yet, a dialogic correspondence between the text and the reader allows the reader's voice to breathe different life into the text. Therefore this study aims to illustrate the identity …

Leadership And Service: Kenyan Teachers Bringing Community Cultural Wealth Into Practice, Peter Njagi Mwangi
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This study explores the complex leadership tasks high school Kenyan teachers provide in their communities, giving a detailed look at how these educators balance their responsibilities as both classroom teachers and community leaders. Historically, Kenyan communities are frequently viewed through a deficit lens, and this study sets out how the cultural wealth of the dynamic teacher and learner communities cross the boundaries between local communities and educational institutions. To enable a new type of bridging school and the community, this study reveals the interconnectedness of school and community through the interplay of teachers moving fluidly in both spaces and influencing …

Factors Influencing Attitudes Of Workers In The Work From Home Environment In South African Organisations, Kirin Maharaj, Guidance Mthwazi, Adheesh Budree
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, a plethora of articles published discuss the work from home (WFH) concept. Like in other sectors of industry, the model received much attention in the academic fraternity as millions of employees had to involuntarily employ the model during global lockdown restrictions. For some, the WFH model worked well, and yet it presented different sorts of challenges for others. While corpus literature has examined the WFH effects, limitations, opportunities, technicalities, logistics, inter-alia, there is a gap in explicating the factors influencing different employee attitudes in the WFH environment in South African organisations. …
Internet Of Things Affordance For Open Educational Resources In A Comprehensive Open Distance E-Learning, Lancelord Mncube
Internet Of Things Affordance For Open Educational Resources In A Comprehensive Open Distance E-Learning, Lancelord Mncube
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
The Internet of Things (IoT) space has dual dimensions of affordance to support open educational resources (OER). The duality of affordance has little or not been well articulated in relation to OER, particularly in a Comprehensive open distance e-learning (CODEL) institution. Such an institution is a mega open distance in South Africa and beyond the continent to accommodate students globally and rely on information and communication technology (ICT) in the provision of tuition. In the CODEL institution, there is a recognizable shift as the institution encourages the appropriation of OER and phasing out the prescription of the prescribed textbooks. The …

Mapping The Indigenous Postcolonial Possibilities Of Teacher Preparation, Anna Lees, Ann Marie Ryan, Marissa Muñoz, Charles Tocci
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this article, a team of teacher educators collectively think through the many possibilities of how concepts such as decolonization, abolition, and fugitivity intersect with and are taken up by teacher education programs. To do so, we undertook a critical interpretive synthesis of scholarly literature spanning 2000 to 2020 to locate, examine, and organize existing examples of teacher education programs that work to transgress hegemonic colonial models of education. We revisit de Oliveira Andreotti et al.’s social cartography as a framework for comparing the theoretical foundations and social implications of each teacher education program.
This Sounds Like An Episode Of The X-Files: Analyzing How Twitter Users Interpreted The Covid-19 Pandemic Through The Lens Of Sci-Fi Television, Nicole Neece
Proceedings from the Document Academy
While science fiction has a long-standing habit of predicting future technologies, The X-Files’ focus on anatomical manipulations as a means of control resulted in a plotline that inadvertently mirrored the COVID-19 pandemic which occurred a few years later. The proximity to such a similar, real-world situation resulted in some audiences interpreting their own experiences through the framework of sci-fi television, demonstrating that the discursive environment crafted through the text of The X-Files is continually applicable to contemporary anxieties and paranoia even after the show finished airing. In this article, I argue that The X-Files’ critiques of real-world abuses of …
