Informal Field-Based Learning In Librarianship: A Case Study Applying The Cam-Os Framework To Library Guide Construction, Nicole R. Webber Dec 2023

Informal Field-Based Learning In Librarianship: A Case Study Applying The Cam-Os Framework To Library Guide Construction, Nicole R. Webber

University Libraries Publications

Activities such as library guide creation and maintenance can take a large amount of our time without supplying evidence that the time spent is effective or worthwhile. Usage statistics and feedback are one avenue for gauging the impact of a guide, but we overlook another benefit if we focus solely on the user. By applying Tannenbaum and Wolfson’s (2022) CAM-OS framework, we can bring greater intention to tasks that foster informal learning opportunities and harness them to advance librarians’ competencies. A case study of overhauling a library guide on copyright is used to demonstrate and apply the framework.

Can Superman Save The Supreme Court After Dobbs? Using Analogical Reasoning To Teach The American People The Superpower Of Stare Decisis, Brandon Stump Dec 2023

Can Superman Save The Supreme Court After Dobbs? Using Analogical Reasoning To Teach The American People The Superpower Of Stare Decisis, Brandon Stump

Cleveland State Law Review

In this Article, I propose that in this post-Dobbs America, if Americans are ever able to believe in, or even understand the magnitude of the Supreme Court’s power, practitioners, scholars, and educators should rely on the power of analogical reasoning, something attorneys are taught beginning their first weeks of law school. Using the power of analogy, we should take the simple story of Superman to explain the magnitude of the power held by the Supreme Court and the critical role that stare decisis must play in the Court’s decision-making. Perhaps if we explain legal principles and the judiciary by …

Putting The Brakes On California's Emissions Standards: An Analysis Of The Legal Challenges California's Advanced Clean Cars Ii Standards Will Face, Michael Maloof Dec 2023

Putting The Brakes On California's Emissions Standards: An Analysis Of The Legal Challenges California's Advanced Clean Cars Ii Standards Will Face, Michael Maloof

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note discusses the legal implications of California’s Advanced Clean Cars II vehicle-emissions standards. These standards, which would affect vehicle model years 2026 through 2035, seek to eliminate the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles in favor of only selling electric, zero-emission vehicles. In light of the Supreme Court’s recent decision in West Virginia v. EPA, this type of “generation-shifting” plan stands on broken ground due to the applicability of the Major Questions Doctrine. The agency action here—EPA approval of a Clean Air Act §7543 waiver—is exactly the type of “extraordinary case” that the Court must strike down in order …

Never-Ending Parenting: Challenges Experienced By Caregivers Of Adults With Severe Autism, Andrea Palerino Dec 2023

Never-Ending Parenting: Challenges Experienced By Caregivers Of Adults With Severe Autism, Andrea Palerino

Dissertations

Despite the large number of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are annually aging out of the school-based systems in the United States, much of the academic literature has been focused on the concerns and challenges of preschool or school-aged children with ASD. As a result, there lacks a clear understanding of how primary caregivers of adult children with severe autism spectrum disorder (SASD) utilize various forms of capital to navigate care.

This study proposed to fill that gap by employing Bourdieu's notions of capital as a theoretical framework for the interview protocol to address accessing community services, securing …

Beginning Of A New Change? How Pittsburgh Regional Transit’S Pilot Program Could Improve Food Insecurity In The Hill District, Lance Daley Dec 2023

Beginning Of A New Change? How Pittsburgh Regional Transit’S Pilot Program Could Improve Food Insecurity In The Hill District, Lance Daley

D.U.Quark

Food insecurity, a state of not having sufficient access to quality nutrition that inhibits one’s

livelihood, has become a growing national issue as a result of socioeconomic inequities, the COVID-

19 pandemic, and the state of the national economy, among other issues. Although governmental food

assistance programs significantly improve food access and quality issues, many food insecure

individuals still suffer from malnutrition as a result of a lack of access to nutritious food because

healthier foods have a much greater cost than those considered unhealthy. As a result, many opt for

unhealthy options at the supermarket in order to get …

The blueprint will be based on research comparing the robust health equity initiatives of four states to the NCQA national guidelines. The barriers to achieving and recommendations for advancing the field of health equity by implementing and analyzing policies and data that target health disparities through improved access to quality care …

Palliative Care Referral Protocol: Best Practice Toolkit For Improving Early Referral Rate For Adult Cancer Patients, Linda Dinh Nguyen Dec 2023

Palliative Care Referral Protocol: Best Practice Toolkit For Improving Early Referral Rate For Adult Cancer Patients, Linda Dinh Nguyen

Student Scholarly Projects

Despite the benefits of palliative care being well-documented in studies and early palliative care services being strongly recommended by reputable organizations, such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology, many patients did not receive or received late referrals (Pigni et al., 2022). This mainly occurs because oncologists commonly base their referrals on perceived needs and clinical judgment (Smith et al., 2017). Thus, this program development project aimed to create a toolkit to improve early identification and referral to palliative care for adult patients who would benefit from palliative care services. The PICO question that guides this program is: In ambulatory …

Crossword: Trauma And The Re-Creation Of Self, Lydia Hall

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Crossword is a short story cycle consisting of five short stories set in Seattle, Washington, that revolve around a single character, named Basimah. Her experience with trauma is portrayed through a magical realist mode and explores themes of selfhood, language, art, absence, and presence. These five stories are a representative sample of a larger project which contains twenty-six stories, one for each of the clues to a crossword. The crossword acts as an organizing agent and one of three creative constraints which structured the creation of each story. The short stories are titled with a clue from the crossword puzzle …

Continuous Authentication Using Human-Induced Electric Potential, Srinivasan Murali, Vighnesh Sivaraman, Huadi Zhu, Ming Li, Wenqiang Jin, Tianxi Ji, Pan Li

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Most terminal devices authenticate users only once at the time of initial login, leaving the terminal unprotected during an active session when the original user leaves it unattended. To address this issue, continuous authentication has been proposed by automatically locking the terminal after a period of inactivity. However, it does not fully eliminate the risk of unauthorized access before the session expires. Recent research has also investigated the feasibility of using physiological and behavioral patterns as biometrics. This study presents a novel two-factor continuous authentication that explores a new form of signal called human-induced electric potential captured by wearables in …

Impact Of Self-Management Education On The Self-Efficacy Of People With Chronic Pain, Tanya Jones Dec 2023

Impact Of Self-Management Education On The Self-Efficacy Of People With Chronic Pain, Tanya Jones

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Self-efficacy is a critical element in the self-management of chronic pain. Despite the traditional approaches to managing chronic pain, such as opioids, traditional methods have proven ineffective and often lead to addiction and misuse, contributing to the overwhelming and devastating opioid crisis. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce the knowledge gap among individuals between the ages of 18 and 75 who have chronic pain by producing data that illustrates that providing individuals with self-management education empowers them to understand and self-manage their pain. The concept of self-management education is grounded in Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory, which highlights the role …

Benchmark Study Of Early Palliative Care In End-Stage Liver Disease, Pebble Ward Dec 2023

Benchmark Study Of Early Palliative Care In End-Stage Liver Disease, Pebble Ward

MSN Capstone Projects

Patients with ESLD in general have high rates of healthcare utilization, resulting in more than 250,000 hospitalizations at $9.8 billion annually in the United States (Ufere et al., 2019). Liver disease is a rising cause of death worldwide, affecting younger people, but palliative care is largely absent for these patients (Kimball et al. 2018). Early readmissions are common for patients with ESLD and in the U.S. alone, over 25% of patients are readmitted within 30 days of their initial diagnosis, rates that now exceed those seen for patients with CHF and COPD (Ufere et al. 2019). Evidence shows that early …

Implementing A Foot Screening Project For Diabetic Patients In An Assisted Living Facility, Beatrice L. Bailey Dec 2023

Implementing A Foot Screening Project For Diabetic Patients In An Assisted Living Facility, Beatrice L. Bailey

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Diabetes impacts around 422 million individuals globally, resulting in 1.5 million reported annual deaths. Type 2 diabetes affects approximately 35.4% of the population in the United States, with 1.4 million new cases identified each year. When not managed properly, diabetes can spiral into a long list of complications. Among the various challenges in diabetes management, foot complications stand out as significant and often avoidable. Without proper attention, these complications can lead to severe health issues. To address this concern, this project focuses on resolving standard foot inspection practices within an assisted living facility in central Mississippi. The goal is to …

Sepsis Criteria On Triage (Scot): Sepsis Alert, Kristie Givens Dec 2023

Sepsis Criteria On Triage (Scot): Sepsis Alert, Kristie Givens

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Sepsis is a serious life-threatening condition that kills hundreds of thousands of patients every year and is a major leading cause of death. Sepsis is a medical emergency where early identification and prompt treatment are crucial for survival. Despite assessment tools for early recognition, a delay in antibiotic therapy remains. A sepsis alert (Code Sepsis) in the emergency department could improve sepsis care, spare countless lives, and save billions of dollars nationwide, annually. The implementation of a Code Sepsis will trigger a team to deliver immediate treatment and ensure one hour antibiotic administration times. The John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice …

Conflict Resolution In Healthcare: The Vital Role Of Developing Conflict Management Skills Among Nurse Leaders, Kris Maddalena Dec 2023

Conflict Resolution In Healthcare: The Vital Role Of Developing Conflict Management Skills Among Nurse Leaders, Kris Maddalena

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Nurse leaders at the unit level play a vital and indispensable role in acute care settings. Their influence extends beyond administrative tasks, as they significantly impact crucial factors such as nurse retention rates, patient outcomes, and the overall work environment of the unit-level teams. Effective unit-level leadership has been consistently associated with improved outcomes, increased job satisfaction, and decreased turnover among nurses (Aiken et al., 2011). This DNP project is focused on enhancing conflict management skills among unit-level nurse leaders in an acute care setting. The project followed a quality improvement sequence, which included obtaining a needs assessment for unit-level …

The Role Of Shared Leadership In Realizing Sdgs: An Exploration Of Intra-Country Collaborative Work Between Heis And Public Policy Groups In Zambia, Chitalu Kabwe, Christine Phiri-Mushibwe, Smita Tripathi Dec 2023

The Role Of Shared Leadership In Realizing Sdgs: An Exploration Of Intra-Country Collaborative Work Between Heis And Public Policy Groups In Zambia, Chitalu Kabwe, Christine Phiri-Mushibwe, Smita Tripathi

Plymouth Business School

This chapter employs the shared leadership model in exploring how leaders of higher education institutions (HEIs) can partner with Public Policy Groups (PPGs) within the Global South, a region characterized by complex challenges such as underdeveloped economies, corrupt leadership, limited financial and human resources, and political instability in some cases. The driving forces for collaboration include interconnected national policies, shared goals, responsibility, and accountability for resources. The Zambian Higher Education Policy (HE policy) draws on national, regional, and global aspirations for education and skills development, making it a suitable tool for advancing a common agenda for social, economic, and environmental …

Methodological Gerrymandering, David Simson Dec 2023

Methodological Gerrymandering, David Simson

Cleveland State Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court has come to decide many of the most consequential and contentious aspects of social policy via its interpretations of the U.S. Constitution. Institutional features of the Court create significant pressure on the Justices to justify their decisions as applications of “law” rather than the practice of “politics.” Their perceived failure to do so calls forth criticism sounding in a variety of registers—ranging from allegations of a lack of neutrality, lack of impartiality, or lack of “principle,” to allegations of opportunism, disingenuousness, and hypocrisy. Analyzing the Justices’ choices in relation to interpretational “methodology”—choosing one lens through which …

Organizational Methods Of Reducing Burnout: The Impact Of Self-Rostering On Work-Life-Integration, Cory Authement Dec 2023

Organizational Methods Of Reducing Burnout: The Impact Of Self-Rostering On Work-Life-Integration, Cory Authement

MSN Capstone Projects

With burnout being at an all-time high, organizations must find new ways to prioritize staff wellbeing and promote work-life balance. According to the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) turnover in emergency departments ranges from 15-30% within the first year of nursing, and 43% within the first three years (Roncallo et al., 2020). These turnover rates cost a 300-bed facility approximately four million dollars in annual expenditure (Hesse, 2016). This level of loss and expenditure is unsustainable for the future of nursing and diverts resources away from our patients.

In recent studies, it was shown that burnout leads to difficulties for nurses …

Improving The Mental Health Of Nursing Students By Utilizing A Serenity Room: A Benchmark Study, Megan E. Taylor Dec 2023

Improving The Mental Health Of Nursing Students By Utilizing A Serenity Room: A Benchmark Study, Megan E. Taylor

MSN Capstone Projects

Research findings consistently show that even though improvements have been made through the years, there is much more work to be done concerning mental health nationwide, especially in nursing. Nurses are the front-line workers in healthcare and face challenging times daily. Mental health-related issues in nursing have increased on a national level since the COVID-19 pandemic (Xiong et al., 2022). A more significant nursing shortage will likely occur without drastic change and support for nurses’ well-being.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a benchmark Capstone project. This benchmark study was conducted with the goal of improving nursing students …
