Southern California Marine Protected Areas Promote Bolder Fish Populations, Lucian Himes, Florybeth F. La Valle
Southern California Marine Protected Areas Promote Bolder Fish Populations, Lucian Himes, Florybeth F. La Valle
Summer Undergraduate Research in Biology Program
Marine protected areas (MPAs) aim to protect habitats and ecosystems to promote the diversity and health of marine populations. To evaluate the health of fish populations within and outside of MPAs in Southern California, we used flight initiation distance (FID). FID is the distance at which an individual will flee from a perceived predator and is a direct measure of boldness. Lower FIDs are indicative of bolder populations. Lower FID values indicate that fish will have the opportunity to dedicate less energy to fleeing from predators which could then be used for increased foraging. Data was collected from eight locations …

2023-October-19-Etsu Scientists- Beavers Have Been Shaping North America For 7 Million Years.Pdf, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University
ETSU News
Famous for their habits of downing trees and damming rivers, beavers leave a major impact on their environments. In fact, scientists have said that beavers change their surroundings more than any other animal besides humans.
And new research suggests that these rodents have been modifying forests and rivers for millions of years.
These insights come from a study published in the journal “Palaeontologia Electronica” by Kelly Lubbers, bonebed paleontologist at The Mammoth Site in South Dakota and an alumnus of East Tennessee State University’s paleontology master’s program, and Dr. Joshua Samuels, associate professor in the ETSU Department of Geosciences …

Structural Design And Synthesis Of Growth Factor Receptor Binding Protein 2 (Grb2) Stabilizing Small Molecule, Mahfuzul Hasan
Structural Design And Synthesis Of Growth Factor Receptor Binding Protein 2 (Grb2) Stabilizing Small Molecule, Mahfuzul Hasan
Theses and Dissertations
The growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) family is a potent inducer of cellular growth. Ligand binding to cognate receptors on plasma membrane induces receptor dimerization and activation, which in turn recruits intracellular molecules for downstream signal transduction. A key signaling pathway activated by growth factor (GF) receptors is the Ras signaling cascade that ultimately leads to cell proliferation. Activation of RTKs leads to the recruitment of adapter protein Grb2, which is constitutively bound to the mammalian homolog of drosophila son of sevenless (SOS), and a guanine exchange factor (GEF) for Ras. The recruitment of the Grb2-SOS complex by activated …
Water Beetles (Coleoptera) Associated With Afrotemperate Forest Patches In The Garden Route National Park, South Africa, Matthew S. Bird, David T. Bilton, Musa C. Mlambo, Renzo Perissinotto
Water Beetles (Coleoptera) Associated With Afrotemperate Forest Patches In The Garden Route National Park, South Africa, Matthew S. Bird, David T. Bilton, Musa C. Mlambo, Renzo Perissinotto
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Southern Afrotemperate Forest is concentrated in the southern Cape region of South Africa and whilst it is relatively well known botanically, the fauna, specifically the aquatic invertebrate fauna, is poorly documented. The majority of remaining intact forest habitat is contained within the Garden Route National Park (GRNP), which straddles the provincial boundary between the Western and Eastern Cape. This study undertakes a survey of the water beetle fauna inhabiting the GRNP. The aquatic ecosystems within temperate forests of the region are poorly researched from an ecological and biodiversity perspective, despite being known to harbour endemic invertebrate elements. We collected water …
An Imperial History Of Race-Religion In International Law, Rabiat Akande
An Imperial History Of Race-Religion In International Law, Rabiat Akande
Articles & Book Chapters
More than half a century after the UN’s adoption of the International Convention on the Prohibition of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, a debate has emerged over whether to extend the Convention’s protections to religious discrimination. This Article uses history to intervene in the debate. It argues that racial and religious othering were mutually co-constitutive in the colonial encounter and foundational to the making of modern international law. Moreover, the contemporary proposal to address the interplay of racial and religious othering is hardly new; iterations of that demand surfaced in the earlier twentieth century, as well. By illuminating the centrality …

Rangewide Migratory Connectivity And Migration Ecology In Swainson's Warblers (Limnothlypis Swainsonii) Derived From Multisensor Geolocators, Garrett Rhyne
LSU Master's Theses
Successful conservation of Neotropical migratory passerines requires a detailed understanding of their annual cycle ecology, including wintering and breeding distributions, migratory pathways and stopovers, and migratory phenology. It is also important to evaluate the extent of geographic isolation between separate breeding populations during the nonbreeding season, known as migratory connectivity. Swainson’s Warbler (Limnothlypis swainsonii) is a species of conservation concern that, due to their secretive nature and selection of dense forest habitats, is poorly studied and lacks migratory information. Our objective was to track Swainson’s Warblers across their breeding populations (Mississippi Valley, Coastal Plains, and Appalachian) to detail …

3-Dimensional Quartic Bézier Curve Approximation Model By Using Neutrosophic Approach, Siti Nur Idara Rosli, Mohammad Izat Emir Zulkifly
3-Dimensional Quartic Bézier Curve Approximation Model By Using Neutrosophic Approach, Siti Nur Idara Rosli, Mohammad Izat Emir Zulkifly
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In a 3-dimensional data collection process, there exists noise data that cannot be included to visualize the process. Therefore, it is difficult to deal with since fuzzy set and intuitionistic fuzzy set theories did not consider the indeterminacy problem. However, using a neutrosophic approach with three memberships: truth, false, and indeterminacy membership function, the error data will be treated as uncertain data by using the indeterminacy degree. Thus, this study will visualize the 3-dimensional quartic Bézier curve model by using neutrosophic set theory. To construct the model, the neutrosophic quartic control point must first be introduced to approximate the neutrosophic …

Guilty As Charged: The Role Of Judge Instructions On Metaphor Produced Biases In Jury Decision Making, Gina N. Rita
Guilty As Charged: The Role Of Judge Instructions On Metaphor Produced Biases In Jury Decision Making, Gina N. Rita
Master's Theses
In this study, we hope to determine if the placement of judge instructions mitigates our previous study’s effect of metaphors on memory and verdict decisions. Our previous study showed in the metaphor condition, participants were more likely to vote guilty and remember more metaphor-related evidence compared to those in the control group. In addition to replicating the previous study’s results, we hypothesize judge instructions stated at the beginning of the trial will have little influence on the metaphor effects, and judge instructions at the end of the trial will weaken these effects. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of …

Western North American Naturalist
Little is known about partitioning coefficients, tissue bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, and otolith timeseries analyses of selenium (Se) in a fishery dominated by walleye (Sander vitreus) that consume multiple prey species and occur in a Se-rich reservoir. Concentrations of dissolved total Se in Pueblo Reservoir water consistently exceeded the current EPA criterion benchmark for lentic aquatic ecosystems. The major objectives of this study were to analyze Se in diet-borne consumables of a walleye fishery and perform time-series trend tests of 21 walleye sagittae. In contrast to previous reports, we proposed investigating Se partitioning from water to subsequent trophic levels …

A Thesis On Phosphatidylserine As A Key Signaling Moiety During Adipocyte Differentiation, Brady Jeffrey Barron
A Thesis On Phosphatidylserine As A Key Signaling Moiety During Adipocyte Differentiation, Brady Jeffrey Barron
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The adipose tissue is composed of specialized energy storage cells called adipocytes. In white adipose tissue, when committed precursor cells (preadipocytes), receive specific cues, the preadipocytes differentiate into mature adipocytes via an adipogenic gene program promoted by transcription factors such as PPAR. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid asymmetrically maintained on the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane in healthy cells. PS flipping to the outer leaflet is a well-known hallmark of cell death, such as apoptosis. Here, while exploring the interplay between PS exposure and adipose tissue homeostasis, we made a surprising discovery in that non apoptotic PS exposure occurs …
Genetic And Pharmacological Factors Control Aging In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Brian Mcnally Egan
Genetic And Pharmacological Factors Control Aging In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Brian Mcnally Egan
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Aging is a time-dependent decline in organismal structure and function that ultimately results in death. Aging occurs in nearly all metazoan organisms, and is a major risk factor for many human diseases including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s Disease. The genetic pathways and mechanistic factors that underly the aging process are poorly understood. Control of aging in the nematode C. elegans can be accomplished via modulation of gene activity by genetic knockdown or by the introduction of inhibitory pharmaceutical compounds. While many such interventions have been described in the literature, understanding the underlying mechanisms that control aging remains …

In modern agriculture, correctly identifying rice leaf diseases is crucial for maintaining crop health and promoting sustainable food production. This study presents a detailed methodology to enhance the accuracy of rice leaf disease classification. We achieve this by employing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model specifically designed for rice leaf images. The proposed method achieved an accuracy of 0.914 during the final epoch, demonstrating highly competitive performance compared to other models, with low loss and minimal overfitting. A comparison was conducted with Transfer Learning Inception-v3 and Transfer Learning EfficientNet-B2 models, and the proposed method showed superior accuracy and performance. With …
