Gaughran, Alexandra L. Decandia, Klaus-Peter Koepfli, Dan Flores, Nucharin Songsasen, Kristin Brzeski, Evelyn L. Jensen

Michigan Tech Publications

Conservation biology and restoration ecology are two essential yet distinct disciplines that address the growing challenge of biodiversity loss. Traditionally, these fields have relied on ecological principles and management practices aimed at protecting or reestablishing natural systems. The crisis is no longer just ecological it is evolutionary and genomic. The accelerating pace of environmental change has outstripped the capacity of conventional approaches, creating a pressing need for innovative solutions. Biotechnology offers potentially transformative tools that can enhance the effectiveness and precision of both conservation and restoration efforts, especially for species where conventional conservation approaches have proven insufficient. Techniques such as …

Titanium Dioxide: An Inquiry Into The Mechanisms And Implications Of Exposure In Gut Dysbiosis And Metabolic Disorders, Meghan Gardiner May 2026

Titanium Dioxide: An Inquiry Into The Mechanisms And Implications Of Exposure In Gut Dysbiosis And Metabolic Disorders, Meghan Gardiner

Senior Honors Theses

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most prevalent food additives utilized in commercial products in the United States. While TiO2 was originally hailed as a nontoxic and cost-effective additive, studies are beginning to reveal that TiO2 is not as safe as it once seemed. TiO2 may contribute to the development of insulin resistance and metabolic disorders through direct and indirect mechanisms. The compound induces gut dysbiosis, leading to alterations in bacterial metabolites and pro-inflammatory cytokines, which results in the selective resistance of glucocorticoid receptors. Additionally, TiO2 itself can translocate from the gut to …

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court denied the tenant's motion for summary judgment and granted the landlord's cross-motion to amend its petition. The tenant argued the landlord could not recover arrears under expired leases per RPAPL § 711(2) and that the predicate Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL) notice was defective. The court held that arrears under prior leases are recoverable if the landlord-tenant relationship was not severed, as renewals extend the existing tenancy. The court also ruled that a defective GCEL notice is a ministerial error, amendable, and not fatal to a nonpayment proceeding, as it does not prejudice the …

Teacher Identity Formation In A Christian University: Expectations And Experiences, Heather J. S. Birch May 2026

Teacher Identity Formation In A Christian University: Expectations And Experiences, Heather J. S. Birch

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This qualitative phenomenological study examines the alignment between applicants’ expectations and graduating candidates’ lived experiences in a teacher education program at a Christian university. Drawing on data from 166 participants collected during application interviews and final capstone conversations, the research explores how candidates anticipated and later reflected on the program’s faith integration, community, and professional formation. Findings reveal that most candidates’ expectations were met or exceeded, highlighting three key shifts: faith experienced as lived values within an inclusive community; unexpected depth of relational support from faculty and peers; and meaningful professional and personal growth rooted in the faith-explicit context. The …

Using Storytelling Of Incarnational Encounters To Disrupt Narratives Of Otherness In Teacher Education, Tina Marie Keller May 2026

Using Storytelling Of Incarnational Encounters To Disrupt Narratives Of Otherness In Teacher Education, Tina Marie Keller

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The incarnation is the ultimate illustration of crossing the chasm between two groups. God's choosing to become flesh tells us of his nature, love, and desire to redeem humanity. Jesus Christ alone is incarnate; however, in history, there have been individuals who have stepped outside the norm and have encountered those unlike themselves, humbly modeled after Christ’s incarnation. Incarnational encounters are the stories of people, whom society deems to be in opposition, finding the imagination to attempt to follow the incarnation of Jesus. For Christian preservice teachers, the model of incarnation is a biblical foundation that can guide the ways …

Bio-Compatible Hardware Computing Framework, Natalie M. Durdle Miss

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure details an entirely metal-free, biochemical, and biodegradable hardware computing architecture. It is the explicit intent of the authors to place the entirety of these concepts, material configurations, and geometric manufacturing methodologies into the public domain to establish a permanent barrier of prior art. The configurations disclosed herein utilize the inherent, predictable chemical and physical properties of processed natural feedstocks (such as regenerated plant cellulose, exfoliated organic carbon, and biological resins). While these elements are isolated and processed from raw botanical and graphitic sources, the final textile computing assemblies operate strictly via the unalterable, native physical laws governing electron …

Fiber-Reinforced Silicate Particulate Composite, Natalie M. Durdle Miss May 2026

Fiber-Reinforced Silicate Particulate Composite, Natalie M. Durdle Miss

Defensive Publications Series

The material operates as a fiber-reinforced, particulate-bound multi-phase composite. The mechanical integrity relies on a dual-matrix system where structural sand grains provide compressive strength, a cohesive clay binder provides micro-particle cohesion via electrostatic forces, and high-tensile organic fibers distribute shear and tensile stresses to prevent cracks during moisture desiccation.

Applications Of A Biopolymer Hydrogel Matrix, Natalie M. Durdle Miss

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes a thermally reversible, biodegradable, high-water-content biopolymer hydrogel matrix generated through the controlled thermal denaturation, extraction, and subsequent low-temperature cross-linking of animal-derived collagen proteins (primarily Type I gelatin) suspended in an aqueous vehicle. This document outlines the chemical clarification, thermal setting profiles, and stabilization techniques required to transform this liquid protein suspension into an elastic, solid hydrogel sheet or airtight protective encapsulation layer. The physical mechanics and chemical formulations of this material are inherently enabled by historical cultural heritage, specifically the 1815 public documentation of Marie-Antoine Carême regarding clarified savory aspics and molded bavarois emulsions.

Generating Dynamic Hazard Alerts Via Multidimensional Crowdsourced Data Collection, Chaim Zucker May 2026

Generating Dynamic Hazard Alerts Via Multidimensional Crowdsourced Data Collection, Chaim Zucker

Defensive Publications Series

Real-time navigation systems may issue generic hazard alerts, such as "car on shoulder," which may not differentiate between varying risk situations. A system for collecting multidimensional data about a reported event can be used to enhance these alerts. After an initial hazard report, the system can distribute simple prompts, for example, binary-choice questions such as "Are people outside the car? To subsequent passing drivers to gather contextual details. These crowdsourced responses can be aggregated, and an algorithm on a server may assess the data against a set of rules to determine a severity level. Based on this assessment, the system …

Dialogue In Screenwriting: Developing The Character Through Conversation, Madalynn Ruth Shiderly

Masters Theses

The purpose of this document is to highlight the importance of dialogue in a screenplay, discuss specific examples of dialogue from well-known films, and analyze how words affect the characterization of a film’s protagonist. First, the document explains the importance of having strong characters in a story for it to be compelling enough for audiences to engage with it. Then, the question of whether character or plot is more important in a narrative is discussed. Finally, the document introduces the concept of dialogue in a screenplay, forming the argument that dialogue is just as important as plot structure. For this …

Man's Modern Need For God: A Literary Apologetic, Matthew G. Jones May 2026

Man's Modern Need For God: A Literary Apologetic, Matthew G. Jones

Masters Theses

This thesis argues that modern man’s attempt to dispense with God inevitably results in psychological, moral, and existential collapse, a reality most powerfully revealed through the literary works of Friedrich Nietzsche, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Leo Tolstoy. Before Nietzsche proclaimed the death of God and called humanity to transcend traditional morality through the rise of the Übermensch, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy had already responded, not merely with philosophical counterarguments, but with stories that exposed the devastating consequences of life divorced from the divine. Through literary apologetics, this thesis examines the broader cultural and spiritual conversation taking place between these nineteenth-century thinkers and …

Adam, The First Scientist: Unlocking The True Foundation Of Scientific Thinking, Thomas E. Lohman Jr. May 2026

Adam, The First Scientist: Unlocking The True Foundation Of Scientific Thinking, Thomas E. Lohman Jr.

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates the complex relationship between scientific thought and theological perspectives, proposing that God breathing life into Adam symbolizes a full divine inspiration for both scientific and theological understanding. The perceived conflict between science and theology arises from a shift in human thinking at the fall, which altered humanity's ability to rightly grasp both realms. After this crucial event, science shifted to a more naturalistic approach, while theology often downplayed God's sovereign power over creation.

The alterations to the original functions and purposes of science and theology have led to a fragile relationship between the two. According to Scripture, …

Linguistic And Cultural Analysis Of Divine Command In 1 Samuel 15: Implications For Biblical Interpretation, Timothy Arnell Dunn May 2026

Linguistic And Cultural Analysis Of Divine Command In 1 Samuel 15: Implications For Biblical Interpretation, Timothy Arnell Dunn

Masters Theses

This thesis argues that ḥērem in 1 Samuel 15 is not a relic of ancient warfare but a sacred act of covenantal devotion that reveals the tension between divine holiness, human obedience, and Israel’s identity as a people set apart for YHWH. Through historical, philological, narrative, and canonical analysis, the study demonstrates that ḥērem functions as a ritualized declaration of divine sovereignty in which destruction becomes consecration and obedience becomes worship. Saul’s partial compliance is therefore not strategic misjudgment but a rupture in covenant fidelity that exposes the costliness of holiness and the danger of selective obedience. Yet the canon …

The Effects Of Phonetic Knowledge And Bilingualism On The Acquisition Of Non-Native Consonant Clusters, Kylie Wakley May 2026

The Effects Of Phonetic Knowledge And Bilingualism On The Acquisition Of Non-Native Consonant Clusters, Kylie Wakley

Theses and Dissertations

Speech motor learning involves the production of new sounds or sound sequences. This study investigated how explicit phonetic knowledge and bilingualism affect how individuals acquire sound sequences that do not occur in English, or non-native consonant clusters. Sixty adults with typical speech, aged between 18 and 27 years, participated in the experiment. The researcher recruited participants into four groups based on their phonetic background (experienced or not) and language background (monolingual, bilingual). The participants produced stop-stop and fricative-nasal clusters in the initial position of nonsense words across six practice blocks. The duration of each cluster was measured, which in English …

Fiction Novel Chapters: Ghost Orchid, Ronald C. Whetsell May 2026

Fiction Novel Chapters: Ghost Orchid, Ronald C. Whetsell

Masters Theses

There is a natural tension between governments whose structures are maintained by strong, centralized control like those of Russia and China, and one built on a decentralized, constitutional democracy such as the United States. Although Russia and China have functioned on the global stage in a manner largely reflecting their own self-interests since the early twentieth century, that configuration will change within the fiction novel, Desert Orchid. The narrative will detail their agreement to combine their resources which will better enable them to compete with the free economy of the United States. Their goal is to usurp the global economic …

Early Chemical Markers Of Spoilage In Thermally Processed Tomato Paste: A Rapid Approach For Shelf-Stable Foods, Hussein Ali Shaghati, Rawia Mahmood Yousif

Al-Nisour Journal for Medical Sciences

This study aims to reduce the incubation period (commercial sterility test) of tomato paste cans before the bacteriological inspection in quality control laboratories. 62 cans of tomato paste were incubated under temperatures (mesophilic 25,37°C and thermophilic 55°C) to accelerate potential spoilage. Chemical indicators(pH, titratable acidity, and lactic acid) and microbial indicators (Total plate count and yeast/molds) were monitored daily to identify the earliest reliable spoilage signals. Incubation at elevated temperatures accelerated acid buildup. D+L lactic acid levels measured using a rapid enzyme assay increased with titratable acidity, while pH decreased. Meanwhile, total platelet counts remained at very low levels, while …
