Notions Of Liberty- Traditional And Modern, Zachary D. Weston
Notions Of Liberty- Traditional And Modern, Zachary D. Weston
Honors Theses
This essay examines, primarily, how notions of liberty have evolved over time in America. Starting from the point of establishing America’s foundation in Thomistic natural law, the essay then seeks to identify, define, and analyze different segments of American political thought that have sprung off from this staring point. Three segments are identified, Conservatism, Liberalism, and Progressivism, and then defined on how they view the self. The conservatives from God, the liberals from reason, and the progressives from how the individual interacts with society. After this, these different segments of American political thought are contrasted by viewing how they offer …

Lakota Ethnobotany For The First Graders, Mikayla A. Janis, Michael. A. Little Eagle, Madhav P. Nepal
iLEARN Teaching Resources
In this lesson, students explore the Ethnobotany of the Lakota people, learning about the deep connection between the Lakota culture and native plants. Through a Schoolyard Walk or a Nature Walk, they observe and learn the Lakota names of three plants, their uses and importance to the Lakota people. Students engage in discussions and storytelling, understanding how these plants are like friends to the Lakota, serving various purposes such as in ceremonies or as food sources. The hands-on craft activity allows them to express what they learn by coloring plant parts and conceptualizing the life cycle of a plant. Overall, …

Prisons And Universities: Co-Creating Curricula For Prison-University Partnerships., Michela Scalpello
Journal of Prison Education Research
This paper illustrates the approach of co-creating education where co-creation was an important aspect of the curriculum design. It makes a case for prison-university partnerships through two pedagogical case studies – one within a prison setting with a focus on soft skills acquisition and another in a Higher Education setting focusing on international criminal justice. Originating from the observations and reflections of an educator which led to a participatory action research opportunity, it asserts that actively teaching and learning together increases effective learning through better understanding and motivation, as well as giving access to the right to education regardless of …

Geographical distribution plays a major role in our understanding of marine biodiversity. Some marine fish trematodes have been shown to have highly restricted geographical distributions, while some are known to occur over very wide ranges; however, very few of these wide distributions have been demonstrated genetically. Here, we analyse species of the genus Schikhobalotrema (Haplosplanchnidae) parasitizing beloniforms from the tropical west Pacific, the eastern Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). We test the boundaries of these trematodes by integrating molecular and morphological data, host association, habitat of the hosts and geographical distribution, following a recently proposed and standardized delineation …

Towards A Virtual Reality Visualization Of Hand-Object Interactions To Support Remote Physical Therapy, Trudi Di Qi, Louanne Boyd, Scott Fitzpatrick, Meghna Raswan, Franceli L. Cibrian
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Improving object manipulation skills through hand-object interaction exercises is crucial for rehabilitation. Despite limited healthcare resources, physical therapists propose remote exercise routines followed up by remote monitoring. However, remote motor skills assessment remains challenging due to the lack of effective motion visualizations. Therefore, exploring innovative ways of visualization is crucial, and virtual reality (VR) has shown the potential to address this limitation. However, it is unclear how VR visualization can represent understandable hand-object interactions. To address this gap, in this paper, we present VRMoVi, a VR visualization system that incorporates multiple levels of 3D visualization layers to depict movements. In …

Stem cells (SCs) are critical to maintain tissue homeostasis. However, it is currently not known whether signaling through cell junctions protects quiescent epithelial SC reservoirs from depletion during disease-inflicted damage. Using the autoimmune model disease pemphigus vulgaris (PV), this study reveals an unprecedented role for a desmosomal cadherin in governing SC quiescence and regeneration through adhesion signaling in the multipotent mouse hair follicle compartment known as the bulge. Autoantibody-mediated, mechanical uncoupling of desmoglein (Dsg) 3 transadhesion activates quiescent bulge SC which lose their multipotency and stemness, become actively cycling, and finally delaminate from their epithelial niche. This then initiates a …

Make A Difference: Choose Artificial Reefs Over Natural Reefs To Compensate For The Environmental Impacts Of Dive Tourism, Louise B. Firth, Mark Farnworth, Keiron P.P. Fraser, Abigail Mcquatters-Gollop
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
In the marine environment, natural reef habitats are amongst the most threatened by human activities. Although reef-based ecotourism can benefit local economies, dive tourism can damage sensitive habitats. One solution to managing conflicts between the economic value of diving and its ecological threats is the deployment of artificial reefs near popular dive sites. We surveyed recreational divers to assess divers' use, preference, and perceptions of diving artificial versus natural sites. We found that more divers prefer to dive in natural than artificial habitats, with associated biodiversity the most popular reason for preferring natural habitats, and appreciating shipwrecks the most popular …
Reading Texts And Pictures, Cynthia Freeland
Reading Texts And Pictures, Cynthia Freeland
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Wartenberg’s book, Thoughtful Images, is an ambitious defense of the value of philosophical illustrations. Through examples from a vast historical sweep, he differentiates several ways that images help us understand or even enact philosophy. My critical response focuses on how viewers understand and make sense of visual images, by comparison with how we interpret texts of philosophical authors. I argue that the relevant processes of interpretation are more similar than what Wartenberg assumes, especially when issues arise about the role of narratives in both texts and pictures.

An Enemy No Longer: The Canadian Military Presence In Japan During The Korean War, 1950-1955, Michael B. Pass
Canadian Military History
In general, most Canadian historians have not paid much attention to their country’s relationship with Japan immediately after the Second World War. Having declined to participate in the American-run occupation of the country from 1945 to 1952, the argument goes, Ottawa was allegedly uninterested in rediscovering Japan. As a result, the consequences of Canada’s military deployment to Japan as part of the Korean War are usually ignored or simplified to the rowdy and salacious exploits of soldiers visiting the country on R&R. In this article, I argue that the war not only had a lasting impact on Japanese-Canadian relations by …

Using Online Learning Courses As A Tool To Support Implementation Of National Standards: A Case Study, Shauna Mccarthy, Deirdre Connolly, Linda Weir, Laura O'Connor, Niamh O'Rourke
Journal of Social Care
National standards act as levers to improve the quality of health and social care services. Lack of knowledge and understanding has been identified as a barrier to implementation of standards into practice. As such, there has been a move internationally towards the development of tools and resources to support implementation. However, there is little literature describing the development or evaluation of such tools. The health and social care standards setting body in Ireland (Health Information and Quality Authority) has developed online learning courses, as a tool to support staff in health and social care services to adopt national standards into …

Euscorpius
A rare teratological anomaly of pecten is described and illustrated: a case of fusion in pectinal teeth in the scorpion Scorpio kruglovi Birula, 1910). It was observed that 7th and 8th teeth are fused in the right pecten. The resulting fused tooth is larger than other teeth. A smaller fulcrum located inside of the large, fused tooth whereas other fulcra are located between normally developed teeth.

Catholic Identity And Allegiance To The Patriot Cause In The American Revolution, David Gray
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
Abstract
Always a minute and persecuted minority in British America, most Catholics by the time of the American Revolution flocked to the Patriot cause for independence, and greater liberty for themselves. This paper explores the historical basis for Protestant prejudice toward Catholics, and reveals that Protestant Patriots in America accepted Catholics in the ranks of the Continental Army and Navy in the common struggle to achieve American independence.

Guided bone regeneration aided by the application of occlusive membranes is a promising therapy for diverse inflammatory periodontal diseases. Symbiosis, homeostasis between the host microbiome and cells, occurs in the oral environment under normal, but not pathologic, conditions. Here, we develop a symbiotically integrating occlusive membrane by mimicking the tooth enamel growth or multiple nucleation biomineralization processes. We perform human saliva and in vivo canine experiments to confirm that the symbiotically integrating occlusive membrane induces a symbiotic healing environment. Moreover, we show that the membrane exhibits tractability and enzymatic stability, maintaining the healing space during the entire guided bone regeneration …

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells targeting CD19 mediate potent and durable effects in B-cell malignancies. However, antigen loss or downregulation is a frequent cause of resistance. Here, we report development of a novel CAR T-cell therapy product to target CD79b, a pan B-cell antigen, widely expressed in most B-cell lymphomas.
METHODS: We generated a novel anti-CD79b monoclonal antibody by hybridoma method. The specificity of the antibody was determined by testing against isogenic cell lines with human CD79b knock-in or knock-out. A single-chain variable fragment derived from the monoclonal antibody was used to make a panel of CD79b-targeting CAR …

Do Organic Farming Practices Improve Soil Physical Properties?, Humberto Blanco-Canqui, Sabrina J. Ruis, Charles A. Francis
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Organic farming (OF) is a reemerging system that could address food security and adverse environmental footprints of conventional farming (CF). However, how OF affects the soil physical environment, an essential pillar for soil ecosystem service delivery, is not well understood. This paper (1) reviews published global literature up to 13 July 2023 regarding the impacts of OF on soil physical properties compared with CF and (2) underlines research needs. Literature indicates OF improves some soil physical properties relative to CF although studies on some properties were few. Specifically, OF increased wet aggregate stability, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and plant available water …

Homologous recombination (HR)-deficiency induces a dependency on DNA polymerase theta (Polθ/Polq)-mediated end joining, and Polθ inhibitors (Polθi) are in development for cancer therapy. BRCA1 and BRCA2 deficient cells are thought to be synthetic lethal with Polθ, but whether distinct HR gene mutations give rise to equivalent Polθ-dependence, and the events that drive lethality, are unclear. In this study, we utilized mouse models with separate Brca1 functional defects to mechanistically define Brca1-Polθ synthetic lethality. Surprisingly, homozygous Brca1 mutant, Polq−/− cells were viable, but grew slowly and had chromosomal instability. Brca1 mutant cells proficient in DNA end resection were …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Animal Protection Laws In The United States And Switzerland, Kelly Ziyu Xia
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” This statement underlines the significance of how a society cares for those under its dominion, particularly those who are defenseless. Animal welfare laws vary widely across the globe, reflecting the diverse approaches taken by different countries to protect the interests of animals. While the United States has made commendable strides, the current legal framework for animal protection remains inadequate. Both Switzerland and the United States have federal laws that aim to protect animal welfare, but …

Unethical Marketing And Advertising To Children: Need For Regulation, Dr Sheetal Kapoor, Vikas Trivedi
International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) lays emphasis to regulate advertising targeted at children globally as kids are inexperienced and vulnerable to adverse impact of promotions by marketers and such regulations are trailing behind.1 Ensuring a robust regulatory mechanism and its effective enforcement remains the biggest challenge globally. The present paper studies the rationale of advertisements targeting children, assesses the impact of contemporary media advertisements on children and appraises the existing regulatory landscape of children targeted advertisements in India. It pushes for the need for stronger regulatory framework in the emerging markets.

In Malaysia, the regulation of unfair contract terms within business-to-consumer contracts falls under the jurisdiction of Part IIIA of the Consumer Protection Act 1999. This regulatory framework is overseen by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Living Cost. However, the effectiveness of Part IIIA is hindered by certain gaps, resulting in its infrequent utilization for determining unfair terms in consumer contracts. One of the primary challenges lies in interpreting key terms such as “harsh,” “oppressive,” “unconscionable,” and “adequate justification.” These ambiguities often remain unresolved until legal proceedings take place. Complicating matters, doubts persist regarding the applicability of the Consumer Protection …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Scytovirin (SVN) is a lectin from cyanobacteria which has a strong inhibitory activity against Ebola virus infection. We engineered scytovirin as the inhibitor for surface display of lactic acid bacteria to block Ebola virus infection. Two different bacterial strains (Lactobacillus casei and Lactococcus lactis) were successfully engineered for scytovirin expression on the bacterial surface. These bacteria were found to be effective at neutralizing pseudotyped Ebolavirus in a cell-based assay. This approach can be utilized for prophylactic prevention, as well as for treatment. Since lactic acid bacteria can colonize the human body, a long-term efficacy could be achieved. Furthermore, …
