Background: Growing evidence supports the role of gut microbiota in obesity, yet exact associations remain largely unknown. Specifically, very little is known about this association in the Emirati population. Methods: We explored differences in gut microbiota composition, particularly the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio, between 43 obese and 31 lean adult Emirate counterparts, and its association with obesity markers, by using V3-V4 regions of 16 S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing data. Furthermore, we collected anthropometric and biochemical data. Results: The two major phyla in obese and lean groups were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. We observed a significantly lower alpha diversity (Shannon index) in …
Comedy, Camaraderie, And Conflict: Using Humor To Defuse Disputes Among Friends, Sheena A. Bringa
Comedy, Camaraderie, And Conflict: Using Humor To Defuse Disputes Among Friends, Sheena A. Bringa
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study sought to examine the role humor plays in defusing conflict between friends from an evolutionary perspective. Although a vast amount of research exists on humor, friendship, and conflict, no single study connects all three of these concepts together. This study attempted to fill this gap by examining how different humor styles used between friends in times of conflict relate to friendship satisfaction and life satisfaction. Specifically, the hypotheses predicted that friends who use affiliative humor to deescalate conflict are more inclined to report higher relational satisfaction and improved individual well-being than friends who use maladaptive humor to deescalate …

Governing Human-Elephant Conflict: A Critical Institutional Approach To Decolonizing Conservation In The Chobe Enclave Of Botswana, Jake Rayapati
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Within the largest population of African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) on the continent, Botswana’s Chobe Enclave is a group of agricultural communities bounded by protected areas and an international border. Human-elephant conflict (HEC) is a major concern for both Enclave residents and conservation practitioners. This research asked how institutional arrangements shape the governance of HEC in the Chobe Enclave. Previous research has shown that technical solutions to HEC must be complemented by integrating governance across local, national, and international levels to make elephant conservation and management more inclusive of people who live alongside elephants. This research employed a …

Three-Dimensional Visualization And Mechanical Assessment Of The Human Running Gait, John A. Leske Ii
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis had two goals; 1) the development of an anatomically accurate visualization tool capable of illustrating high-speed 3D kinematic data, and 2) to rigorously evaluate the accuracy and capacity of the visualization tool by measuring the joint moments, net extensor muscle forces, and effective mechanical advantage in a group of sprinters running across the range of human speeds. Our visualization tool successfully integrates these complexities, pinpointing a location within 1.3 mm in a volume of 0.87 m x 2.00 m x 1.98 m, and accurately reproduces the observed movement trajectories of the subject's anatomical landmarks. Our approach was successful …

Greater Sage-Grouse In A Grazed Landscape: Habitat Selection, Demographic Rates, And Population Trends In Central Montana, Jennifer Evans Helm
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) abundance has declined across the species’ range due to habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation. To address this decline, information is needed to guide habitat conservation priorities and population management efforts. This includes information about patterns of habitat selection at multiple spatial scales, habitat and land use variables that affect demographic rates, and population trend estimates. We collected ten years of data (2011-2020) on sage-grouse demographic rates and habitat selection, as well as on vegetation and livestock grazing patterns, to address these topics. We were specifically interested in the effects of a rotational grazing system implemented through …

Understanding Identity, Power, And Use Of Space Over Time Within Housepit 54, Bridge River Site (K’Etxelkná’Z), British Columbia, Ashley Elizabeth Hampton
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This research examines cultural change and continuity as embodied within a singular multi-generational housepit (Housepit 54) located within the Bridge River site (K’etxelkná’z) in the Mid-Fraser Canyon, British Columbia, Canada. Previous research has highlighted the distinctive differences between Bridge River 2 and 3 time periods wherein the village was faced with dramatic population growth and climate change. These pressures crafted a Malthusian ceiling-type event which corresponded with the emergence of persistent institutionalized inequality. This research aims to illuminate issues of gender, kinship, social identity, and household social relationships in order to highlight how macro-scale cultural change is evinced in micro-scale …
Federal Funding Statutes And State-Federal Wildlife Authority: Did Congress Demonstrate A Preference For State Wildlife Management Authority With Pittman-Robertson And Dingell-Johnson?, James Vaughan Branch
Federal Funding Statutes And State-Federal Wildlife Authority: Did Congress Demonstrate A Preference For State Wildlife Management Authority With Pittman-Robertson And Dingell-Johnson?, James Vaughan Branch
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937 now known as Pittman-Robertson and Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act of 1950 now known as Dingell-Johnson are federal statutes which stand as the original and perhaps most significant federal funding statutes supporting state wildlife conservation and management. Congress’s decision to pass these statutes may be argued to be a prima facie endorsement of state wildlife agencies (SWA) as the primary managers of wildlife since each statute dedicated substantial federal excise revenue to SWAs. We hypothesized we would find consistent evidence in favor of primary state management authority over wildlife. …

Flicker Feather Films: Visual Anthropology, Indigenous Film, And Documentary Filmmaking, Martin I. Lopez
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In order to contribute 21st-century tools to educational settings, this dissertation draws from the growing subfield, multimodal anthropology, which includes, but is not limited to visual anthropology and film. This dissertation is composed of a series of documentary films created by an Indigenous filmmaker. When combined with Indigenous filmmaking, tribal cultures can begin to share their points of view through self-representation. Indigenous methodologies helped to frame the documentary films I made for my dissertation by aiming to combat the perpetuation of stereotypes and misrepresentation by non-Native filmmakers. Documentary films within anthropology still have validity in academia if the goal is …

Ecological Adaptation And Speciation In Chipmunks, Nathanael David Filer Herrera
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Understanding how evolutionary and ecological mechanisms promote speciation and adaptation is one of the central challenges of evolutionary biology. Recent advancements in theoretical, methodological, and computational approaches now allow biologists to test long-standing questions regarding the evolutionary history of species. This includes the genomic underpinnings of reproductive barriers and adaptive phenotypes, and the contribution of ecology, geography, and demography in the generation and maintenance of biodiversity. While great strides have been made in understanding the genetic and ecological factors that underlie speciation and local adaptation, many open questions remain. My dissertation first seeks to address questions about how we define …

Food Waste Storage Gaseous Emissions Detection And Quantification Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Ryley A. Burton-Tauzer
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
A growing interest in sustainable waste management and the implementation of new policies have prompted a shift towards alternative resource recovery methods for organic waste, including food waste. To effectively assess alternative food waste treatment scenarios, it is important to evaluate the life cycle impacts associated with each scenario. The storage phase of food waste, encompassing its accumulation in kitchens, and storage in bins for collection and transportation, has been overlooked as a source of greenhouse gases in previous studies. This investigation aimed to identify the greenhouse gases emitted during the initial five-day period of low-oxygen storage. An open dynamic …

Consumers increasingly rate the ethical dimensions of food production, including animal welfare, as important to them but how these concerns influence their food choices remains unclear. To address this, a Discrete Choice Experiment assesses consumers' willingness to pay for chicken meat. The study aims to understand the effects of food labels (RSPCA Assured and Red Tractor), cause-related marketing campaigns, and price on consumers' willingness to pay. Drawing on a representative sample of 401 British consumers, we estimate a mixed logit model using the hierarchical Bayesian estimation method. The results for the full sample reveal a substantial price premium associated with …

An Overview Of Meat Composition, Postmortem Changes, And Sources Of Microbial Contamination In Developing Countries Abattoirs, Hend Ali Elshebrawy, Nahed Gomaa Kasem, Khalid Ibrahim Sallam
Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal
Meat is an essential component of a healthy and well-balanced diet and has played a crucial role in human evolution over the years because it is an excellent source of highly digested protein, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, niacin, iron, copper, zinc, and selenium. Raw meat is considered an unavoidable source of microbial contamination due to its enriched nutrient composition, high pH (5.5 to 6.5), and water activity (0.98 to 0.99); consequently, the meat is regarded as a perfect medium for bacterial growth. Meat deterioration begins immediately after slaughter because of faulty practices during the processing stages such as skinning, evisceration, …
