Covid-19 Health Crisis And Cross-Border Trade In West Africa, Tibi Didier Zoungrana, Olivier Combelem, Désiré Drabo
Journal of African Trade
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Strict has adopted strict restrictions since the appearance of the new coronavirus disease in 2019 (Covid-19). This article seeks to assess the economic consequences of these measures on the activities of cross-border trade actors. To this end, data was collected from 144 traders, 8 customs services, 9 immigration services and 84 transporters using the quota method, distributed among 6 trade corridors (Ouagadougou-Téma, Dakar-Bamako, Ouagadougou-Abidjan, Lomé-Ouagadougou, Cotonou-Niamey and Lagos-Kano-Niamey). Empirical findings show that on all corridors, the health crisis has led to a decline in trade transactions and hence a decline in net …

Emerging Applications Of 3d Engineered Constructs From Plant Seed Extracts, Sedat Odabaş, Bora Gari̇pcan, Rihab Ksouri
Turkish Journal of Biology
Seeds, by-products derived from various plants such as mango, quince, and apples, are considered waste, though they have emerging commercial potential, and have been used in biological, industrial, and physiological research. Seed-derived natural macromolecules- mainly polysaccharides, mucilage, gums, and cellulose-have physicochemical and structural diversification, giving the potential for forming gels, texturing, thickening, and providing interfacial adsorption. Seed-derived natural macromolecules have been widely used during the last few years in cell research and tissue engineering applications. Their widespread approachability and safety, high rate of biodegradability, biocompatibility, supporting cell proliferation, and extracellular matrix synthesis are the main properties making plant seed derivatives …

The Role Of Superb Microvascular Imaging In Detecting Low-Grade Inflammation Among Adults And Those With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Preliminary Study, Alaaddi̇n Nayman, Nusret Seher, Mehmet Öztürk, Hali̇l Özer, Gülperi̇ Çeli̇k
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Pathophysiologic changes associated with chronic inflammation occur with aging and more prominently in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and an association between chronic inflammation and muscle wasting has been identified. The microcirculation is extremely sensitive to the inflammatory process and actively participates in it. In a healthy adult, angiogenesis is a strictly controlled and rare occurrence. However, aberrant angiogenesis and the development of new tiny blood vessels are known in chronic inflammatory diseases. Superb microvascular imaging (SMI) is a noninvasive technique that can evaluate tiny vessels with low blood flow and provide quantitative data. Our goal was to …

Solutions Still Searching For A Problem: A Call For Relevant Data To Support “Evergreening” Allegations, Erika Lietzan, Kristina Acri Née Lybecker
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
For years pharmaceutical policymaking discussions have been revolving around allegations of supposed “evergreening” by pharmaceutical companies, and policymakers have considered a range of significant policy reforms—including to antitrust law and drug regulatory law—to address this purported problem. This Article evaluates empirical data offered to substantiate “evergreening” and explains that these data—though mostly accurate—do not support proposed policy changes.
The “evergreening” claim is that by securing additional patents and FDA-related exclusivities after approval of their new drugs, brand drug companies enjoy a period of exclusivity in the market that is longer than the initial patent(s) and exclusivity on the drug would …
Silly Gene Patent Is Not My Lover: A Retrospective Analysis Of Myriad, Stephanie Huang
Silly Gene Patent Is Not My Lover: A Retrospective Analysis Of Myriad, Stephanie Huang
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. established that an isolated fragment of a gene—the basic unit of heredity—is not patent-eligible subject matter while simultaneously holding that complementary DNA (cDNA) of a gene is patent-eligible subject matter. The decision has been controversial and criticized for including two holdings that are internally inconsistent from both scientific and patent law perspectives. But are the short- and long-term criticisms overstated? A decade after Myriad, the various impacts of the case remain relevant, particularly to the biotechnology and genetic testing fields.
First, this Note examines whether Myriad …

Analysis Of Cryptic Variation Affecting Splicing In Early-Onset Mendelian Disease, Stephanie A. Felker
Analysis Of Cryptic Variation Affecting Splicing In Early-Onset Mendelian Disease, Stephanie A. Felker
Dissertations
Genetic variants with poor annotation or unknown biological consequence are often systematically excluded in genomic analysis. Here I analyze variants near "poison exons” which are often absent from standard gene annotations and are alternative exons whose inclusion results in a premature termination codon. Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) often result from rare genetic variation, but the genomic testing yield for NDDs remains around 50%, suggesting some clinically relevant rare variants may be missed by standard analyses. Variants that alter poison exons inclusion can lead to loss-of-function and may be highly penetrant contributors to disease. I analyzed variants found by genome sequencing in …
Novel Approaches To The Analysis Of Gene Regulation Data, Brian S. Roberts
Novel Approaches To The Analysis Of Gene Regulation Data, Brian S. Roberts
Dissertations
The study of gene regulation is crucial to understanding differentiation, cell specialization, and response to external stimuli observed in multicellular organisms. Genome-scale technologies enabled by high-throughput sequencing have allowed insight into many aspects of gene regulation. However, these techniques produce large, complex data that require the development of computation-based analytical techniques. I present here two analytical techniques that I have created for gene regulation data. First, I describe an approach for the analysis of sequencing-based reporter data that reveals new features of human genetic sequence that generate biased strand transcription even out of genomic context. Next, I present a package …
Modeling Freely Flying Insects Using A Strongly Coupled High Fidelity Numerical Framework, Jeremy A. Pohly
Modeling Freely Flying Insects Using A Strongly Coupled High Fidelity Numerical Framework, Jeremy A. Pohly
Dissertations
Flying insects, with their remarkable abilities, serve as fascinating sources of inspiration. Deciphering the complex mechanisms that enable monarch butterflies to migrate nearly 80 million times their body length, requires advanced modeling tools. These tools must capture the interplay between non-linear wing aerodynamics, dynamic body responses, and flexible wings, characteristics of the monarch. A novel framework is introduced that tightly integrates these physical phenomena through a dynamic relaxation scheme. The model’s application extends to examining the longitudinal flight of monarch butterflies and the hovering flight of fruit flies, bumblebees, and hawkmoths. A bio-inspired feedback controller ensures stable flight across all …
Model-Free Control Methods For Gait And Standing Push Recovery In Bipedal Humanoid Robots, Jerry Sweafford Jr.
Model-Free Control Methods For Gait And Standing Push Recovery In Bipedal Humanoid Robots, Jerry Sweafford Jr.
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the use of model-free control methods in various aspects of effective balance and gait control for two-legged humanoid robots. It explores what it should mean to improve balance and gait control for robots and proposes gait fragility as an alternative framework to the prevailing yet undefined dynamic stability objective. Next, it presents techniques for trajectory tracking control without deriving dynamic models, using modifications of the conventional reinforcement learning approach. Finally, it explores the use of deep online reinforcement learning with disturbance and assistance curricula for learning standing push recovery in bipeds.
International Whaling: Reframing The Iwc Moratorium For The Effective Conservation Of Whales, Kacey Hovden
International Whaling: Reframing The Iwc Moratorium For The Effective Conservation Of Whales, Kacey Hovden
Animal Law Review
The ocean once teemed with whales at seemingly every tide and crest, but due to centuries of overexploitation, whales are now a rare and coveted sight in many parts of the world. Today, the challenge of preventing these magnificent giants from extinction remains prevalent, with slow recovery rates and continued whaling practices in direct conflict. This Article examines the history of global whaling practices and the International Whaling Commission’s 1986 moratorium and argues for the establishment of an effective regulatory scheme permitting commercial whaling only on abundant whale stocks. The scheme would encourage whaling nations to remain members of the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a leading cause of death and reduces life expectancy. Complications from diabetes have wreaked havoc not only on patients' quality of life, but also on the global burdens of public health and socioeconomic development. The most frequent complication among patients with diabetes mellitus is diabetic wounds, particularly diabetic foot ulcers because of the damage to sensory nerves and blood vessel issues brought on by elevated blood glucose levels. As a result, chronic wounds eventually develop and are prone to infection. In this study, several novel analytical devices for the detection of wound infections and the wound …

Mycobacterium Spp. Identification By Nanopore Technology, Samitanan Sunantawanit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tuberculosis is caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Although TB and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection exhibit similar symptoms, their treatments differ significantly. NTM strains need a specific drug regimen and some NTM strains are resistant to anti-TB drugs. Hence, mycobacterial identification is crucial. At present, the culture-based technique is the gold standard in mycobacterium detection, but it is time-consuming (3-6 weeks). Here, this study aimed to develop mycobacterial amplicon-based nanopore sequencing (Myco-ANS) assay for the differentiation of eight reference strains of mycobacteria, as well as to assess the diagnostic accuracy of Myco-ANS compared with reference line probe assay for …

Gardenia Jasminoides Fruit Extract Alleviates Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug–Induced Gastropathy In Rats, Rinrada Worapongpaiboon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced gastropathy is a health burden that requires effective treatment. Gardenia jasminoides fruit extract (GJE) protects the gastrointestinal tract by reducing inflammation with wide safety margins, but the underlying mechanisms are still indeterminate. Therefore, this thesis aimed to explore the effects of GJE pretreatment on NSAID-induced gastric injury in rats based on the hypothesis that GJE could attenuate the injury. Twenty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to 3 groups (n=8/group). The control group received a vehicle (7.5% NaHCO3). The NSAIDs group received indomethacin 200 mg/kg twice a day (4 hours apart) for 2 consecutive days. The …
Identification Of Active Region Of Colicin N Translocating Domain Involved In Its Antibacterial Activity, Wanassanan Lampromkaew
Identification Of Active Region Of Colicin N Translocating Domain Involved In Its Antibacterial Activity, Wanassanan Lampromkaew
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Colicins are bacteriocins produced by Escherichia coli (E. coli) and toxified themselves. In general, colicins comprise three domains, including the N-terminal domain or translocation (T) domain, the Receptor binding (R) domain, and the Cytotoxic (C) domain. The combination of these domains produces different types and activities of colicin. Colicin N is the smallest colicin and functioned in pore-formation by the C-domain on the E. coli membrane. The antimicrobial activity is regulated by the specific binding between OmpF and TolA (as receptor and translocator) at region OBS (OmpF binding site) and TABs (TolA binding site), respectively. They are then inserting the …

Identification And Functional Characterization Of Mads-Box Proteins And Ccos Involved In Carotenoid Metabolism In Durian Durio Zibethinus L. Pulps, Kittiya Tantisuwanichkul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Durian (Durio zibethinus L.), known as the "King of fruits," holds significant economic importance in Thailand. Apart from its unique odor and sweet taste, durian pulp exhibits a yellow color, which is an important aspect of fruit quality. Carotenoids are essential compounds responsible for the yellow, orange, and red coloration in many fruits and vegetables. During durian fruit development and ripening processes, its pulp changes from white to yellow due to increased carotenoid accumulation. The carotenoid biosynthetic pathway, responsible for carotenoid production, is controlled by ethylene. However, the mechanism underlying this process in durian fruit is still unknow. Notably, the …
