The Antimicrobial Peptide Database Is 20 Years Old: Recent Developments And Future Directions, Guangshun Wang Jan 2023

The Antimicrobial Peptide Database Is 20 Years Old: Recent Developments And Future Directions, Guangshun Wang

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

In 2023, the Antimicrobial Peptide Database (currently available at https://aps.unmc.edu) is 20-years-old. The timeline for the APD expansion in peptide entries, classification methods, search functions, post-translational modifications, binding targets, and mechanisms of action of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) has been summarized in our previous Protein Science paper. This article highlights new database additions and findings. To facilitate antimicrobial development to combat drug-resistant pathogens, the APD has been re-annotating the data for antibacterial activity (active, inactive, and uncertain), toxicity (hemolytic and nonhemolytic AMPs), and salt tolerance (salt sensitive and insensitive). Comparison of the respective desired and undesired AMP groups produces new knowledge …

Monuments Without Faces?, Shelby D. Green Jan 2023

Monuments Without Faces?, Shelby D. Green

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Monuments take many forms and can serve several purposes. Typically associated with honor and a need to commemorate significant events, monuments seem to represent the ideas of the communities which house them. However, it remains to be seen whether all monuments represent a “good” memory. In this essay, the author seeks to comment on the concept of collective memory, specifically in the context of the history and experiences of marginalized groups in the United States. The author argues that monuments are a tool of promoting a collective memory: monuments are not part of history but rather part of the creation …

Comparing Sensing And Signaling Mechanisms Across Aer2 Receptors With Different N-Terminal Domain Arrangements, Erwin Stuffle Jan 2023

Comparing Sensing And Signaling Mechanisms Across Aer2 Receptors With Different N-Terminal Domain Arrangements, Erwin Stuffle

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Bacteria use chemoreceptors and associated chemosensory systems to navigate and respond to their environment. Aer2 chemoreceptors are a family of O2 sensors that all have a common core structure but differ with regards to their N-terminal domain types and arrangements. The Aer2 receptors from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PaAer2) and Vibrio cholerae (VcAer2) have been extensively studied. However, the marine pathogen Vibrio vulnificus possesses a previously uncharacterized Aer2 receptor. Here I present an analysis of the V. vulnificus Aer2 chemoreceptor, VvAer2, which is the first V. vulnificus chemoreceptor to be characterized. VvAer2 is related to the Aer2 receptors of other gammaproteobacteria, but …

Layer-By-Layer Assembled Particles For Non-Invasive Inhaled Therapeutic Delivery To The Lungs, Gautam Chauhan Jan 2023

Layer-By-Layer Assembled Particles For Non-Invasive Inhaled Therapeutic Delivery To The Lungs, Gautam Chauhan

Theses and Dissertations

Inhalation route is frequently used to administer drugs for managing respiratory diseases with high pulmonary drug concentration and low systemic side effects. But due to the complex lung structure and defense mechanism, only a small fraction of the dose can reach the lung. There have been several advances in strategies to overcome these challenges and achieve localized delivery to the lung. In this study, we are expanding the scope for lung delivery using a multifunctional delivery system called layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled particles. These are core particles coated with polyelectrolytes multilayer which have a wide range of properties and can be …

Investments In The Magnificent Ambersons: Business, Marriage, And Law-Making, Saul Levmore Jan 2023

Investments In The Magnificent Ambersons: Business, Marriage, And Law-Making, Saul Levmore

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Successful investments often reflect insight, implementation, and good fortune. In Booth Tarkington’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Magnificent Ambersons1 (written in 1918, adapted by Orson Welles in a celebrated 1942 film, and recently rediscovered and scheduled for release with material that had been removed over Welles’ objection), horses give way to the automobile and the characters’ fortunes rise and fall as the world changes with the advent of this new technology. Meanwhile, the decision to marry, like one to enter other partnerships, also depends on insight, effort, and good fortune. I aim to show these parallel themes in the novel. The …

International Agreements By U.S. States: Federalism, Foreign Affairs, And Constitutional Change, Curtis A. Bradley Jan 2023

International Agreements By U.S. States: Federalism, Foreign Affairs, And Constitutional Change, Curtis A. Bradley

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The text of the U.S. Constitution appears to require that, to the extent that individual states are ever allowed to conclude agreements with foreign governments, they must obtain congressional approval. In practice, however, states conclude many agreements with foreign governments and almost never seek congressional approval. This practice is an illustration of both the importance of federalism in U.S. foreign relations and the significant role played by historical practice in informing U.S. constitutional interpretation. The phenomenon of state international agreements assumed new prominence in 2019 when the Trump administration sued to challenge a climate change agreement that the state of …

A Diet Comparison Of Bluegill And Bluegill X Pumpkinseed Hybrids, Russell D. Zwiers Jan 2023

A Diet Comparison Of Bluegill And Bluegill X Pumpkinseed Hybrids, Russell D. Zwiers

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus and pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus commonly prey upon macroinvertebrates but have been found to show different preferences to what type of macroinvertebrates. Hybrids of the two species have been found to display physical characteristics of both parents but prey selection of the hybrids compared to the parents is unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the diets of bluegill and bluegill x pumpkinseed hybrids to understand what each species’ preference is when it comes to food as well as finding how a hybrid’s diet compares to the pure breed of one of the two crossed …

Effects Of Velocity And Substrate Size On The Formation Of Zebra Mussel Druses, Ian Mott Jan 2023

Effects Of Velocity And Substrate Size On The Formation Of Zebra Mussel Druses, Ian Mott

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Zebra Mussels Dreissena polymorpha are an invasive bivalve species that are highly successful at dominating new environments. These invaders have been known to colonize substrate so thoroughly that all they have to attach to are members of their own species. When large mats of interconnected mussels completely cover a riverbed, it can have a drastic effect on the surrounding environment. This study serves to create a better understanding of the hydrologic parameters needed for Zebra Mussels to create these ecosystem-transforming colonies known as druses. Data was collected on a small stretch of the Upper Mississippi River in Northern Minnesota, previously …

Estimate Of Long-Term Phytoplankton Biomass In Lake Bemidji, William J. Peterson Jan 2023

Estimate Of Long-Term Phytoplankton Biomass In Lake Bemidji, William J. Peterson

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Phytoplankton are photosynthetic organisms that are the base of aquatic food webs. In a dimictic temperate lake such as Lake Bemidji, the environment adjusts with the changing water temperatures and sunlight levels. The phytoplankton in a dimictic lake are adapted to subsist in long term seasonal changes but the exact change to the number of phytoplankton in unknown. The focus of this study was to estimate the biomass of phytoplankton in a long term period including winter stratification and summer peak. From a period between March 2023 and October 2023 water samples were collected from the lake in the south …

Heterogeneous Ribosomes And Bs21: An Investigation Of Impacts And Mechanisms Of Altered Translation In Francisella Tularensis, Hannah Trautmann Jan 2023

Heterogeneous Ribosomes And Bs21: An Investigation Of Impacts And Mechanisms Of Altered Translation In Francisella Tularensis, Hannah Trautmann

Open Access Dissertations

Francisella tularensis is a pathogenic bacterium that requires coordinated regulation of gene expression to cause disease. In this dissertation, I explore a novel area of translation-level gene regulation in F. tularensis: heterogeneous ribosomes that preferentially translate specific mRNAs. Through mass spectrometry and immunoblotting, I find that wild-type F. tularensis ribosomes are heterogeneous with respect to the small ribosomal protein bS21 and all three bS21 homologs are able to be incorporated into ribosomes. Comparing proteomics and transcriptomics data, I determine that cells lacking one homolog, bS21-2, have genome-wide changes in protein abundance that are not explained by changes in transcript …

Investigating And Testing Historic Methods For The Creation Of Imitation Pearls, Savanna Crowther Jan 2023

Investigating And Testing Historic Methods For The Creation Of Imitation Pearls, Savanna Crowther

Open Access Master's Theses

Pearls have been treasured as rare and valuable objects for thousands of years and across many different cultures. Due to their inherently rare and expensive nature, however, a demand for cheaper and more accessible substitutes was created. While imitation pearls have existed for thousands of years, a lack of surviving examples, photographs, or other visual evidence means that it is unknown what early imitation pearls would have looked like. The purpose of this research was to examine the development of artificial pearls throughout history, using a mixed methods experimental design. By examining various historic methods for producing imitation pearls, this …

Convolutional Neural Networks For Classification Teeg And Eeg, Thao Nguyen Ngoc Pham Jan 2023

Convolutional Neural Networks For Classification Teeg And Eeg, Thao Nguyen Ngoc Pham

Open Access Master's Theses

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a commonly used non-invasive method that acquires voltage of the brain during neural activities by using conventional disc electrodes. However, there are some fundamental limitations associated with EEG such as poor spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), inaccurate data due to overlapping information, and artifact contamination. Also, the EEG software filtering solutions had the potential of distorting EEG data making the results unreliable. The tripolar electroencephalogram (tEEG) records brain signals by using the tripolar concentric ring electrodes (TCRE). Based on the surface Laplacian algorithm, signals recorded from TCRE overcome the limitations of EEG. tEEG has better SNR …

Human-Inspired Vision-Based Reaching And Grasping For Assistive Robotic Arms With Reinforcement Learning, Robert Beyer Jan 2023

Human-Inspired Vision-Based Reaching And Grasping For Assistive Robotic Arms With Reinforcement Learning, Robert Beyer

Open Access Master's Theses

Humans have a remarkable ability to grasp and manipulate various objects in their everyday life. However, individuals who suffer from paralysis that result in limited or no voluntary limb muscle control, require assistance from caregivers for activities of daily living, such as eating and drinking tasks. Hereby, a recent study predicts a global shortage of millions of healthcare workers in 2030. The study concludes that this shortage may not occur when labor productivity increases through the better utilization of technology. Assistive robots have the potential to significantly reduce this shortage and assist healthcare professionals in doing so. However, most of …

The Gaspee Affair: Slavery, Trade, And Elite Rebellion In Colonial Rhode Island, Joey La Neve Defrancesco Jan 2023

The Gaspee Affair: Slavery, Trade, And Elite Rebellion In Colonial Rhode Island, Joey La Neve Defrancesco

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes the Gaspee Affair within the context of 18th century Rhode Island's business of slavery. It argues that Rhode Islanders' 1772 attack on the British revenue collector Gaspee was a self-interested attempt by the colony's merchant class to preserve an unregulated slave economy. The established historiography of the Gaspee Affair almost uniformly praises the raid as a heroic mob action rooted in patriotic ideals, and ignores issues such as slavery, race, class, and the material interests of the attackers. The fantasy of the Gaspee conspirators as a disorderly group of common Rhode Islanders is demonstrably false: the leaders …

Dietary Whey Protein Increases Brain Leukocytes In Mice Regardless Of Their Hypersensitivity Status, Dilini Ekanayake Jan 2023

Dietary Whey Protein Increases Brain Leukocytes In Mice Regardless Of Their Hypersensitivity Status, Dilini Ekanayake

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Cow’s milk allergy (CMA) often manifests as milder reactions and may be linked to neurological problems. Previously, we demonstrated that C57BL/6J mice sensitized to a bovine whey allergen, β-lactoglobulin (BLG, Bos d 5), moderately increased BLG-specific IgE levels and exhibited behavioral changes without severe allergic reactions. When these non-anaphylactic CMA mice were placed on a whey-protein (WP)-containing diet for 2 weeks to simulate continuous dairy consumption, we found neuropathology indicative of neuroinflammation and cortical demyelination. Since immune cells migrate to the central nervous system (CNS) and promote neuroinflammation in demyelinating conditions such as multiple sclerosis, we hypothesized that the number …

Native Amphibian Toxin Reduces Invasive Crayfish Feeding With Potential Benefits To Stream Biodiversity, Gary M. Bucciarelli, Sierra J. Smith, Justin J. Choe, Phoebe D. Shin, Robert N. Fisher, Lee B. Kats

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Background: Biodiversity is generally reduced when non-native species invade an ecosystem. Invasive crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, populate California freshwater streams, and in the Santa Monica Mountains (Los Angeles, USA), their introduction has led to trophic cascades due to omnivorous feeding behavior and a rapid rate of population growth. The native California newt, Taricha torosa, possesses a neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX), that affects freshwater animal behavior. Given P. clarkii has a limited evolutionary history with TTX, we hypothesized that TTX may affect crayfish feeding behaviors. To determine if TTX affects P. clarkii behavior, we measured cumulative movement and various feeding behaviors of P. …

Climatic Stress Decreases Tick Survival But Increases Rate Of Host-Seeking Behavior, Caleb Nielebeck, Sang Hyo Kim, Antonio Pepe, Lucian Himes, Zachary Miller, Sophia Zummo, Mary Tang, Javier D. Monzón

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Ticks are vectors of many diseases and are expanding in geographic distribution. However, how ticks will fare in their new environments, where they may experience stressful climatic conditions at the expansion front, remains unclear. Since there is a trade-off in ticks between behaviors that promote longevity and behaviors that promote reproduction, we hypothesized that extreme climatic stress reduces the survivorship of ticks but increases the frequency of tick host-seeking behavior, or questing. Here, we used a novel method to simulate climatic stress on individual ticks of three species—Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, and Ixodes scapularis—to evaluate their survival, physiology, and questing …
