Teaching Agroecology: Preparing Students For Navigating Uncharted Territory, Charles A. Francis, Steve Gliessman Jan 2023

Teaching Agroecology: Preparing Students For Navigating Uncharted Territory, Charles A. Francis, Steve Gliessman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Agroecologists understand that farming and food systems are more complex than the aggregation of their components. This realization drives our choices of learning strategies and activities that will prepare students for complexity and uncertainty. Our quest for a just, sustainable, and nutritious food system adequate to equitably serve everyone on the planet today and into the future is an enormous challenge. An undertaking of this magnitude will be met only with major adjustments informed by thoughtful teaching and practicing problem solving skills through a new educational lens. The principles of agroecology help us focus this lens on the wicked problems …

Hif-1 Activation And Inflammatory Responses To Hypoxia, Shazreen Shaharuddin, Nik Mohd Afizan Nik Abd Rahman, Mas Jaffri Masarudin, Mohammedarfat N Alamassi

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Acute hypoxia is a significant physiological danger during high-altitude flying and military aircraft missions. The human brain requires a constant supply of oxygen to function properly, and is susceptible to settings with low availability of air oxygen. Hypoxia can influence inflammatory signalling, and both central and systemic responses can activate HIF pathway genes. HIFs are critical molecules that regulate inflammation andhypoxia, ensuring appropriate cell function and survival. Hypoxia is the condition in which insufficient oxygen reaches the body's tissues. It can be caused by a decrease in partial oxygen pressure (PO2) in the environment, problems with breathing and/or oxygen transport, …

The Dead End Of Animus Doctrine, Dale Carpenter Jan 2023

The Dead End Of Animus Doctrine, Dale Carpenter

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Hatred is as old as our civilization. So is the moral principle that one should not hate others and should not act on such hatred. Concerns that an angry or fearful majority might nevertheless treat people maliciously were present both at the beginning of our constitutional Republic and in its most divided epoch. The very structure of our government—dividing and separating powers—and our most hallowed egalitarian principle—Equal Protection of the Laws—were seen as safeguards against decisions driven by a “bare . . . desire to harm.” Such decisions are blasphemy in our legal heritage. Half a century ago, the Supreme …

Wireless Investors & Apathy Obsolescence, Sergio Alberto Gramitto Ricci, Christina M. Sautter

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This Article discusses how a subgenre of retail investors makes investors’ apathy obsolete. In prior work, we dub this genre of retail investors “wireless investors” for their reliance on technology and online communications. By applying game theory, this Article discusses how wireless investors’ global-scale online communications allow them to circulate information and coordinate, obliterating collective action problems.

Russia, Ukraine, And The Challenge Of Wartime Accountability, Jeffrey D. Kahn Jan 2023

Russia, Ukraine, And The Challenge Of Wartime Accountability, Jeffrey D. Kahn

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

There has been a notable shift in the emerging Russian perspective on international law and international organizations, a trend that began nearly a decade prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Over this period, Russia has made substantial alterations to its laws, constitution, and international commitments, effectively withdrawing from previously accepted legal obligations. Furthermore, Russia has increasingly rejected fundamental international legal norms and principles with growing fervor.

In the keynote remarks delivered during the Texas Tech Law Review 2023 Criminal Law Symposium, the author delves into this significant shift, providing illustrative examples.

Cloud Seeding, Wildfire Smoke Emissions, And Solar Geoengineering: Why Is Climate Modification Unregulated?, Karen Bradshaw, Monika U. Ehrman Jan 2023

Cloud Seeding, Wildfire Smoke Emissions, And Solar Geoengineering: Why Is Climate Modification Unregulated?, Karen Bradshaw, Monika U. Ehrman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This Article is the first to identify that companies and agencies systemically modify climatic airspaces through wildfire smoke emissions, weather modification (cloud seeding to cause rain), and solar geoengineering. Climate modification is not a conspiracy theory or a hypothetical: it is happening, and it is changing weather patterns. Yet, climate modification is almost wholly unregulated. Further, it is also not recorded or tracked in systemic ways. That is to say, even government agencies do not have comprehensive records of whether; how often; or how much climate modification is occurring. The data is simply not gathered, aggregated, or stored. As a …

A Survey Of Using Machine Learning In Iot Security And The Challenges Faced By Researchers, Khawlah M. Harahsheh, Chung-Hao Chen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become more popular in the last 15 years as it has significantly improved and gained control in multiple fields. We are nowadays surrounded by billions of IoT devices that directly integrate with our lives, some of them are at the center of our homes, and others control sensitive data such as military fields, healthcare, and datacenters, among others. This popularity makes factories and companies compete to produce and develop many types of those devices without caring about how secure they are. On the other hand, IoT is considered a good insecure environment for cyber …

Implications Of Cyberbiosecurity In Advanced Agriculture, Simone Stephen, Keitavius Alexander, Lucas Potter, Xavier-Lewis Palmer

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The world is currently undergoing a rapid digital transformation sometimes referred to as the fourth industrial revolution. During this transformation, it is increasingly clear that many scientific fields are not prepared for this change. One specific area is agriculture. As the sector which creates global food supply, this critical infrastructure requires detailed assessment and research via newly developed technologies (Millett et al, 2019; Peccoud et al, 2018) . Despite its fundamental significance to modern civilization, many aspects of industrial agriculture have not yet adapted to the digital world. This is evident in the many vulnerabilities currently present within agricultural systems, …

Adverse Maternal Environment Alters Oprl1 Variant Expression In Mouse Hippocampus., Xingrao Ke, Yingliu Huang, Qi Fu, Amber Majnik, Venkatesh Sampath, Robert H. Lane

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

An adverse maternal environment (AME) and Western diet (WD) in early life predispose offspring toward cognitive impairment in humans and mice. Cognitive impairment associates with hippocampal dysfunction. An important regulator of hippocampal function is the hippocampal Nociceptin/Orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) system. Previous studies find links between dysregulation of hippocampal N/OFQ receptor (NOP) expression and impaired cognitive function. NOP is encoded by the opioid receptor-like 1 (Oprl1) gene that contains multiple mRNA variants and isoforms. Regulation of Oprl1 expression includes histone modifications within the promoter. We tested the hypothesis that an AME and a postweaning WD increase the expression of hippocampal Oprl1 …

Anishinaabeg Niizh Manitoag: Asha Amaa, We Were Always Here, Jacqueline F. Nobiss X

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

ANISHINAABEG NIIZH MANITOAG:

ASHAA A’MAA, WE WERE ALWAYS HERE

Abstract

This research is an in-depth exposé of Anishinaabeg knowledge surrounding niizh manitoag, two-spirit ways of knowing. General collections of two-spirit writings and contributions in the past thirty years uncovered a noticeable gap in the research around Anishinaabeg's two-spirit knowledge, stories, and teachings.

Using Indigenous research paradigms, this knowledge base posits a unique theoretical, conceptual framework identified as an Indigenous Relational Theory. The theory delineates a way of knowing and understanding Anishinaabe niizh manitoag, two-spirit identity. The Indigenous Relational Theory consists of four models, Relational Cultural Model, Relational Identity …

Third Sector Organizations In Iceland: Size, Scope, And Scale, Jeannie Entenza

School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to contribute missing data to existing studies on the comparative nature of global third sector economies. Iceland, a modern, high-income, high-service society on the cusp of the Arctic Circle has not been included in these studies while the other four Nordic countries have all been analyzed. This study aims to map over 12,000 registered third sector organizations in Iceland to demonstrate the type and level of public-facing organized activity in the country. The quantitative research design relied heavily on the concept and inspiration of the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project and proved that Iceland was indeed …

Procedural Justice And Crime Control: Latinos’ Perceptions Of The Minneapolis Police, Giovanni Veliz Jan 2023

Procedural Justice And Crime Control: Latinos’ Perceptions Of The Minneapolis Police, Giovanni Veliz

School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations

Deadly encounters between U.S. police and marginalized communities, such as the high-profile deaths of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, and George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, have resulted in fractured police–community relationships and civil unrest. Elected officials, police executives, and scholars have investigated various strategies to repair these relationships. Efforts to improve public perceptions of law enforcement have frequently focused on procedural justice training and research. Many academic studies and police initiatives have overlooked the perspectives of Latino individuals and communities. This study asks: How do Latinos perceive the police? Do they believe that police treat Latinos and others fairly? Do …

Jeremiah’S Portrayal Of War As Worship: Hollow Form Of Holiness, Oliver Glanz Jan 2023

Jeremiah’S Portrayal Of War As Worship: Hollow Form Of Holiness, Oliver Glanz

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

From an anthropological perspective, the acts of war and worship share similarities. Both are mission-driven, exercise rituals and liturgies, use songs, and have calls to duty. As such, the ultimate legitimization of war uses elements of sacred language usually found in the context of worship. The study of Jeremiah’s language usage provides a critical perspective on this typical anthropological phenomenon: the legitimization of war employing sacred language. When tracing Jeremiah’s vocabulary with the help of valence analysis, it can be argued that the prophet purposefully unmasks human war as a potential form of idol worship. Human war can, therefore, be …

Antitrust Accountability Delayed: State Antitrust Enforcement And Multidistrict Litigation, Roger P. Alford Jan 2023

Antitrust Accountability Delayed: State Antitrust Enforcement And Multidistrict Litigation, Roger P. Alford

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

State Attorneys General play a crucial role in the enforcement of antitrust laws. Defendants have successfully delayed state enforcement proceedings by centralizing them with private lawsuits in multidistrict litigation. A new venue law has foreclosed that delay tactic, placing State Attorneys General on equal footing with federal antitrust enforcers in deciding where, when, and how to prosecute antitrust cases.

In this autoethnography, we—four Hispanic Serving Institution colleagues at the USA–Mexican frontera—share our process of building a collective where a plural, organic, vulnerable, and recursive space was created. In this space, through readings, conversations, feedings, discussions, and memories, un/anticipated stories emerge…in our unchoreographed writings, we whirl, twirl, collide, and craft our collective space, which was at once chaotic, cathartic, and sustaining.

Lawyering Somewhere Between Computation And The Will To Act: A Digital Age Reflection, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2023

Lawyering Somewhere Between Computation And The Will To Act: A Digital Age Reflection, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This is a reflection on machine and human contributions to lawyering in the digital age. Increasingly capable machines can already unleash massive processing power on vast stores of discovery and research data to assess relevancies and, at times, to predict legal outcomes. At the same time, there is wide acceptance, at least among legal academics, of the conclusions from behavioral psychology that slow, deliberative “System 2” thinking (perhaps replicated computationally) needs to control the heuristics and biases to which fast, intuitive “System 1” thinking is prone. Together, those trends portend computational deliberation – artificial intelligence or machine learning – substituting …

Reappraising The Evolutionary History Of The Largest Known Gecko, The Presumably Extinct Hoplodactylus Delcourti, Via High-Throughput Sequencing Of Archival Dna, Matthew P. Heinicke, Stuart V. Nielsen, Aaron M. Bauer, Ryan Kelly, Anthony J. Geneva, Juan D. Daza, Shannon E. Keating, Tony Gamble

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Hoplodactylus delcourti is a presumably extinct species of diplodactylid gecko known only from a single specimen of unknown provenance. It is by far the largest known gekkotan, approximately 50% longer than the next largest-known species. It has been considered a member of the New Zealand endemic genus Hoplodactylus based on external morphological features including shared toe pad structure. We obtained DNA from a bone sample of the only known specimen to generate high-throughput sequence data suitable for phylogenetic analysis of its evolutionary history. Complementary sequence data were obtained from a broad sample of diplodactylid geckos. Our results indicate that the …

Plant Sentience Revisited: Sifting Through The Thicket Of Perspectives, Paco Calvo, Miguel Segundo-Ortin Jan 2023

Plant Sentience Revisited: Sifting Through The Thicket Of Perspectives, Paco Calvo, Miguel Segundo-Ortin

Animal Sentience

In our target article (Segundo-Ortin & Calvo 2023), we proposed the intriguing possibility of plant sentience, drawing parallels with non-human animal studies. This response aims to sift through the rich thicket of perspectives offered by our commentators. To do so, we assess the risks of employing double standards, as well as the tendencies of anthropomorphizing and zoomorphizing in plant studies. We also emphasize the need for clarity in linguistic and conceptual terms, examine the neurophysiological evidence for plant sentience, and discuss the ethical implications of such recognition.

“Try Getting A Reservation At Dorsia Now, You Fucking Stupid Bastard!” Hegemonic Masculinity In Slasher Films, Samantha Jackson

Capstone Showcase

This thesis aims to analyze and address the prevalence of hegemonic masculinity in the slasher subgenre of horror films. The research consisted of a content analysis of what the internet deemed the ‘best’ ten slasher films of all time. The content analysis was based upon R.W. Connell’s (2005) theory of hegemonic masculinity which stated the existence of hierarchical standards for masculinity that men are expected to achieve. Hegemonic masculinity was categorized into four themes. The themes were sexist ideology, sexual behavior, and physical and emotional violence. The research indicated that emotional violence occurred at the highest rate among the sample …

Harnessing Citizen Science And Collections Data For Invasive Plant Surveillance, Adin L. Ring Jan 2023

Harnessing Citizen Science And Collections Data For Invasive Plant Surveillance, Adin L. Ring

Library Map Prize

Our main source of information about the distribution of invasive plants in the United States comes from occurrence records in three categories: biological collections (physical plant specimens in museums), citizen science (opportunistic observations by untrained civilians), and invasion monitoring (structured observation by government or non-profit agencies). This study compiles a set of 3.1 million occurrence records of 3,578 introduced plant species in the continental United States, and infers spatial, temporal, and taxonomic biases by comparing the three categories of data. We find that citizen science contributes the largest bulk of records, and does better capturing visually conspicuous plants and very …
