Journal Articles: Epidemiology
BACKGROUND: Symptomatic patients who test negative for common viruses are an important possible source of unrecognised or emerging pathogens, but metagenomic sequencing of all samples is inefficient because of the low likelihood of finding a pathogen in any given sample. We aimed to determine whether nasopharyngeal CXCL10 screening could be used as a strategy to enrich for samples containing undiagnosed viruses.
METHODS: In this pathogen surveillance and detection study, we measured CXCL10 concentrations from nasopharyngeal swabs from patients in the Yale New Haven health-care system, which had been tested at the Yale New Haven Hospital Clinical Virology Laboratory (New Haven, …

The Second Amendment's "People" Problem, Pratheepan Gulasekaram
The Second Amendment's "People" Problem, Pratheepan Gulasekaram
Publications
The Second Amendment has a “people” problem. In 2008, District of Columbia v. Heller expanded the scope of the Second Amendment, grounding it in an individualized right of self-protection. At the same time, Heller’s rhetoric limited “the people” of the Second Amendment to “law-abiding citizens.” In 2022, New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen doubled down on the Amendment’s self-defense rationales but, once again, framed the right as one possessed by “citizens.” In between and after the two Supreme Court cases, several lower federal courts, including eight federal courts of appeals, wrestled with the question whether the right …
Investigating Visinin-Like Protein 1 And Ubiquitinated Visinin-Like Protein 1 As Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Biomarkers, Yueming Wu
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite significant progress in understanding the complex pathophysiology of TBI, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The primary brain damage is acute and irreversible. However, secondary brain injuries often develop gradually over months to years, creating an opportunity for critical therapeutic interventions. In the past decade, research on TBI biomarkers has seen significant progress. This progress has been driven by the diverse nature of TBI pathologies and the challenges they present for evaluation, management, and prognosis. TBI biomarker proteins resulting from axonal, neuronal, or glial …
Ad Coelum And The Design Of Property Rights, Joseph Schremmer
Ad Coelum And The Design Of Property Rights, Joseph Schremmer
Faculty Articles
This Article seizes on a specific doctrinal discussion in Eric Claeys's Natural Property Rights to argue for the importance of understanding property doctrines in the context of a system of interconnecting rules and standards and not in isolation. The ad coelum doctrine provides that land ownership entails ownership of the suprajacent airspace as well as the underlying subsurface. As Claeys's discussion highlights, scholars disagree about the significance of ad coelum both conceptually, as to what function the rule serves in defining and allocating property, and normatively. It is only by viewing ad coelum in the context of how it interacts …
Fractional Sovereignty, Roger Michalski
Fractional Sovereignty, Roger Michalski
Faculty Articles
The axiomatic beginning of every conflict of laws case is that a court must choose the law of one sovereign and disregard the law of all other sovereigns. One wins, gets to set the rules and regulate behavior, all others lose. This all-or-nothing scenario is the result of enshrining an old view of indivisible sovereignty into conflict of laws rules. The Article begins by explaining how this happened. Despite the importance of this assumption of indivisibility, no articles have examined why and how it became enshrined in conflict of laws doctrine. All too often it is treated as a truism …
The Effects Of Music Therapy On Autistic Students: A Literature Review, Lynwood A Meyer
The Effects Of Music Therapy On Autistic Students: A Literature Review, Lynwood A Meyer
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines music therapy and how the use of this intervention can help students with ASD. The literature review provides a brief history of Special Education and the perception of autism, and what defines the classification of autism. The author suggests music therapy yields diverse effects for individuals with ASD, including emotional regulation, improved social, and language skills. Group interventions exhibit long-term enhancements, and incorporating games facilitates effective emotional expression. Challenges exist in achieving behavioral, psychosocial, and language objectives, with individual interest emerging as a crucial factor in determining music therapy's effectiveness. Parents as primary caregivers collaborate with teachers …

Utilizing The Alarm Taxonomy And Classification System (Atacs) To Redesign Landing Gear Warnings, Stephen Rice, Ryan Lange, Sean R. Crouse, Scott R. Winter, Ryan J. Wallace
Utilizing The Alarm Taxonomy And Classification System (Atacs) To Redesign Landing Gear Warnings, Stephen Rice, Ryan Lange, Sean R. Crouse, Scott R. Winter, Ryan J. Wallace
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Alarms have been in use for many decades, yet there still needs to be more clarity about what makes a good alarm. Vendors and government agencies have developed several useful handbooks describing the Do’s and Don’ts of effective alarm design; however, to date, we cannot find a comprehensive quantitative taxonomy or classification system that allows researchers to easily score and rank various alarm designs in any field—while using a common language that users, engineers, designers, and human factors professionals can understand. The Alarm Taxonomy and Classification System (ATACS) fills this gap in the literature by breaking alarms down into categorical …
Testing Backward Chaining Ab-Initio Flight Instruction, Samuel M. Vance, Kat Gardner-Vandy Phd, Brendan A. Pearce
Testing Backward Chaining Ab-Initio Flight Instruction, Samuel M. Vance, Kat Gardner-Vandy Phd, Brendan A. Pearce
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
This conceptual/exploratory research updates that previously published in the Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education and Research (JAAER) Vol. 30, Issue 1 (Spring 2021) which asked if backward chaining, ab-initio pilot training decrease time to first solo? The specific focus of the research was the viability of landings instruction as the first ab-initio lesson. The research compared a total of eight respondents in a backward-chained flight instruction methodology against four respondents in a forward-chained flight instruction methodology. All 12 respondents were recruited without previous flight instruction or Pilot-in-Command logged flight time. Ground instruction preceded simulator instruction which was followed by instruction in …
Modelling And Mitigating Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human-Avatar And Human-Robot Interaction, Na Li
Modelling And Mitigating Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human-Avatar And Human-Robot Interaction, Na Li
Dissertations
Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is an important but challenging field focused on improving the interaction between humans and robots, to make the interaction more intelligent and effective. However, building a natural conversational HRI is an interdisciplinary challenge for scholars, engineers, and designers. Achieving successful conversational interaction with a social robot necessitates not only observing a user’s active participation in the interaction but also being aware of their emotional and attitudinal states as the interaction progresses. On the topic of attitudinal states, one field that has received little attention to date is monitoring the user for possible confusion states. Confusion is a …
Examining The Sociolinguistic Expression Of Moral Disgust, And Investigating The Role Of The Emotion In Inter- And Intra-Group Processes., Ryan Statton
School of Psychology Theses
Informed by Tybur et al’s (2009) Three Domains of Disgust Model, I used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies to develop and test a prototypical model of Moral Disgust and investigate how the emotion functions in both intra- and inter-group processes. I conducted thematic analysis to construct a two-factor model of Moral Disgust informed by the sociolinguistic perspective (Sankoff, 1982). The new model identified the sub-factors Hierarchical Disgust and Third-Party Disgust and extend Giner-Sorolla et al.’s (2018) two-factor model by including considerations of group and third-party protection. The new model of Moral Disgust also supports an extension of the …

The research subjects are 33 participants who completed the 100-day foundation building program within six months. The results of the quantitative and qualitative cross-comparison analysis show that this …
Characterization Of The Gut Microbiome In Healthy Dogs And Dogs With Diabetes Mellitus, Shun Wan Chan
Characterization Of The Gut Microbiome In Healthy Dogs And Dogs With Diabetes Mellitus, Shun Wan Chan
Department of Food and Health Sciences
With a close pathogenetic resemblance to human diabetes, canine Diabetes Mellitus, a chronic metabolic disease featuring abnormally high blood sugar levels, is increasing in prevalence worldwide. Unlike humans, canine glycemic control requires life-long insulin injections and dietary control in most cases, thereby jeopardizing diabetic dogs’ quality of life and increasing the difficulty of disease control. While many research studies have focused on elucidating the relationship between the canine gut microbiome and diseases, there is currently no research on the subject of diabetes mellitus in dogs. We hypothesized that the gut microbiome of canines with diabetes mellitus is different from that …
A Novel Probiotic-Based Oral Vaccine Against Sars-Cov-2 Omicron Variant B.1.1.529, Shun Wan Chan
A Novel Probiotic-Based Oral Vaccine Against Sars-Cov-2 Omicron Variant B.1.1.529, Shun Wan Chan
Department of Food and Health Sciences
COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is still affecting the entire world via the rapid emergence of new contagious variants. Vaccination remains the most effective prevention strategy for viral infection, yet not all countries have sufficient access to vaccines due to limitations in manufacturing and transportation. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop an easy-to-use, safe, and low-cost vaccination approach. Genetically modified microorganisms, especially probiotics, are now commonly recognized as attractive vehicles for delivering bioactive molecules via oral and mucosal routes. In this study, Lactobacillus casei has been selected as the oral vaccine candidate based on its’ natural …
Quantifying Residual Feed In A Fence-Line Feedlot Bunk Using Depth Camera Imaging Techniques, Jean Niwenshuti, Galen E. Erickson, Tami M. Brown-Bandl, Eric T. Psota, Yijie Xiong
Quantifying Residual Feed In A Fence-Line Feedlot Bunk Using Depth Camera Imaging Techniques, Jean Niwenshuti, Galen E. Erickson, Tami M. Brown-Bandl, Eric T. Psota, Yijie Xiong
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Feed bunk management requires intensive labor and relies on manual observation to estimate the amount of residual feed in the bunk. Alternative and innovative technologies were used to estimate the weight of residual feed in a concrete fence-line bunk using a depth camera. Depth cameras capture the distance between the camera and the object in their field of view. This study used a time-of-flight depth camera (Azure Kinect, Microsoft) to estimate the weight of residual feed in a partial fence-line concrete bunk using 11 common feed ingredients. The camera was fastened approximately 3.3 ft above the center of the bunk …
Extending Melengestrol Acetate Treatment From Fourteen To Eighteen Days In Beef Heifers, Dempster Christenson, Jordan M. Thomas, Daniel J. Kelly, R. Funston
Extending Melengestrol Acetate Treatment From Fourteen To Eighteen Days In Beef Heifers, Dempster Christenson, Jordan M. Thomas, Daniel J. Kelly, R. Funston
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
This study compared estrus synchronization, estrus response, and artificial insemination pregnancy rates of beef heifers fed melengestrol acetate the normal 14-day period or extended to an 18-day period using the melengestrol acetate -prostaglandin- heat detect and timed artificial insemination protocol. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate if extending melengestrol acetate feeding by 4 days increases the number of heifers ovulating, which would result in greater estrus response and pregnancy rate in the whole herd. Early estrus response following prostaglandin administration occurred in heifers who averaged an earlier estrus response after melegestrol acetate withdrawal but extending the melengestrol …
