“Thinking Across Bodies”: Percepción Woolfiana Y Giro Material En La Cuentística De Rodoreda, Roig, Alós Y Riera, Ana Álvarez Guillén Jan 2023

“Thinking Across Bodies”: Percepción Woolfiana Y Giro Material En La Cuentística De Rodoreda, Roig, Alós Y Riera, Ana Álvarez Guillén

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

Conventional understandings of perception have long undergirded traditional readings of Modernist texts in adopting a predominantly subject-centered perspective that separates subject from object in a vertical and hierarchical relationship. I argue that a consideration of Virginia Woolf’s short stories in dialogue with four generations of twentieth-century Catalan women writers who followed her work closely suggests an entirely different epistemological framework of perception in which subject and object are fluidly and horizontally organized. Mercè Rodoreda, Concha Alós, Montserrat Roig and Carme Riera establish a horizontal fictional dialogue that constitutes a return to matter that decenters the subject, resulting in an alternative …

Disability Awareness To Promote Inclusivity For Children In The Educational Setting, Abby Bauman Jan 2023

Disability Awareness To Promote Inclusivity For Children In The Educational Setting, Abby Bauman

Occupational Therapy Capstones

A large barrier to an effective and successful educational experience is the stigma and perceived judgment surrounding a child’s disability (Fontil et al., 2020). Implementing disability awareness materials into young classrooms is a way to prevent the development of stigma towards disability. Children who received disability awareness programming in the past have shown improved attitudes towards disabilities as opposed to those who have not (Chae et al., 2019). The purpose of this scholarly project is to assist teachers with implementing disability awareness materials to increase encouragement for young peers to accept, include, and support young individuals with disabilities.

New Mexico's Greenbelt Law: Disincentivizing Water Conservation Through Agricultural Tax Breaks, Annalise Porter, Robert P. Berrens, John Fleck

Natural Resources Journal

New Mexico (NM) passed a Greenbelt law (NM Stat § 7-36-20) in 1967 offering tax subsidies to agricultural landowners. The law represents a serious disconnect between land and water policy in that it has serious water policy implications but has never been discussed accordingly. We estimate that in 2020, Rio Grande surface flows were used to irrigate 4,388 acres of land in Bernalillo County, the state’s largest urban area, that received the agricultural valuation. This represents an estimated water use of nearly 11,000 acre-feet, on many properties not utilizing the program as originally intended, in a region where agriculture is …

The Spoon Theory, Sanne Methorst

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

The Spoon Theory is a 3D animated short film that tells the story of a dancer struggling with an invisible disability. There is a variety of media that focuses on the struggles of the disabled, however the spoon theory focuses on a different aspect by exploring disabilities that are not easily seen. The film uses visual symbols to communicate these hard to discern conditions, creating a visually interesting spectacle while effectively conveying an important message. The Spoon Theory invites the viewer to experience a different perspective on life and raise awareness about the unknown struggles of others.

Propaganda Of Car Ecotourism In Glacier National Park, Hanna Y. Mohammed Jan 2023

Propaganda Of Car Ecotourism In Glacier National Park, Hanna Y. Mohammed

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This paper discusses the promotion of car ecotourism and its impact on Glacier National Park. Coinciding with the creation of the park's flagship Going-to-the-Sun Road from 1921 to 1932, both the state and the private sector presented the image of the newly commodified automobile as a vehicle to explore nature with. Historically, national parks have served the interests of the middle and upper classes, by suppressing marginalized communities, primarily through forced relocation in order to clear the lands for creation of the parks. The public's conception of the “wilderness” drastically changed during the time the car was commodified, as nature …

Exploring Whether A Collage Art Intervention Enhances Levels Of Resilience In Asian Americans Who Have Experienced Emotional Suppression, Casey Galaura

Art Therapy | Master's Theses

Emerging research has shown cross-cultural differences when coping with negative emotions (Yoshie & Sauter, 2020). The Asian American population uniquely experiences both western and eastern cultures, which have different ideologies around expressing negative emotions. In Eastern Cultures, it is common to suppress negative emotions, while Western cultures find it more accepting. Suppressing emotions is a form of emotional dysregulation and can cause a negative effect on one’s psychopathology. This mix-methods study explores whether collage art-based intervention enhances levels of resilience with Asian Americans who have experienced emotional suppression. The theoretical orientation, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), was used as a guide …

Optimizing Autonomous Multi-Agent Search Patterns Using Swarm Intelligence, Justin P. Maio Jan 2023

Optimizing Autonomous Multi-Agent Search Patterns Using Swarm Intelligence, Justin P. Maio

Open Access Master's Theses

This work examines several approaches to using multiple robotic search agents to locate a hidden object within a bounded space. Animal swarm behavior is used as model for robots using collaborative tactics with limited intelligence and sensing capabilities. Leveraging group behavior creates opportunities for the robotic swarm to perform better than an equal number of individual robots. Investigated advantages of using a robotic swarm include added endurance, shared GPS accuracy, robustness against evasive maneuvers, and (most importantly) decreased search time.

An object-oriented program written in Python is used to compare eight group-search approaches. A simulation counts the number of steps …

Potential Applications Of Amorphous Calcium Carbonate (Acc) In Water Treatment Operations, Brendan Mccarron Jan 2023

Potential Applications Of Amorphous Calcium Carbonate (Acc) In Water Treatment Operations, Brendan Mccarron

Open Access Master's Theses

The increasing negative effects from anthropogenic activities has given rise for bioprospecting new and advanced materials intended for sustainable remediation and restoration efforts. There are currently efforts into exploring naturally found porous substrates to use in a variety of applications, however the cost and availability has been a limiting factor in introducing these into current practices. Many studies have explored and identified the high performance of granulated activated charcoal for water filtration but tend to disregard the environmentally harmful nuances that occur during the manufacturing process. Priority for these porous substrates focus on results, with little to no regard for …

Analysis Of Vote-By-Mail Processing And Tabulation: A Time Study From Salt Lake City, Leonie Samira Otte Jan 2023

Analysis Of Vote-By-Mail Processing And Tabulation: A Time Study From Salt Lake City, Leonie Samira Otte

Open Access Master's Theses

The number of vote-by-mail (VBM) ballots cast in the 2020 presidential election reached record highs. Reasons for the sudden increase in voters using VBM ballots range from accessibility to social distancing restrictions and other COVID-19 pandemic health and safety concerns. In conjunction with other circumstances encircling the presidential election, the reporting of VBM results was delayed. This led to mistrust and contributed to mis-, dis-, and mal-information surrounding the election results. Ultimately, it was difficult for election officials to predict how long it would take to verify and tabulate VBM ballots, especially due to the rapid adoption and expansion of …

Brook Trout Habitat Selection And Movement Response To Critically High Temperatures In Fragmented Stream Networks, Corey Pelletier Jan 2023

Brook Trout Habitat Selection And Movement Response To Critically High Temperatures In Fragmented Stream Networks, Corey Pelletier

Open Access Master's Theses

The Eastern Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is a cold-water obligate fish species that is losing habitat across its native range. Increases in water temperature resulting from climate change and anthropogenic influences are causing declines in distribution and this trend is expected to accelerate. The ability of Brook Trout to survive and adapt to increasing temperatures may be limited by physical barriers, such as natural waterfalls, manmade dams, and perched culverts, that are scattered throughout watersheds in the native range. While temperature effects on Brook Trout and other salmonids have been well documented, few research studies have focused on …

Antibiotic Tolerance In Quiescent Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Daniel Alexander Banas Jan 2023

Antibiotic Tolerance In Quiescent Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Daniel Alexander Banas

Open Access Master's Theses

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are the leading cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs). In about a quarter of these cases the patient experiences reoccurring infection after treatment with antibiotics. The prevalence of reoccurrence may be attributed to the ability of some UPEC populations to enter a growth state where they are tolerant to antibiotic treatment. In reduced metabolic, dormant, and quiescent states bacteria are less susceptible to antibiotics that target critical growth pathways, allowing for prolonged survival. In Manuscript I, we investigate antibiotic tolerance in the quiescent UPEC strain CFT073 in vitro. We demonstrate that during quiescence UPEC are tolerant …

Home Is Where The Habitat Is: Modeling Shortfin Mako Habitat Suitability Via Machine Learning Methods, Julian Garrison Jan 2023

Home Is Where The Habitat Is: Modeling Shortfin Mako Habitat Suitability Via Machine Learning Methods, Julian Garrison

Open Access Master's Theses

Given the mounting threats of species overexploitation, climate change, and other anthropogenic stressors to global biodiversity, there is a growing need for conservation and management efforts informed by the life history and ecology of target species. Apex marine predators such as the shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) are especially vulnerable owing to their life history traits, but accurately mapping habitat preferences remains challenging. Using a novel framework that combines multiple analytical techniques, I report on nearly a decade of habitat preferences of 106 shortfin makos in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and western North Atlantic Ocean (NAO). I leverage the …

Distribution And Variability Of Blue Carbon In Tidal Marsh Soils Of Southern New England, Joseph Vincent Manetta Jan 2023

Distribution And Variability Of Blue Carbon In Tidal Marsh Soils Of Southern New England, Joseph Vincent Manetta

Open Access Master's Theses

Tidal marshes in Southern New England represent critical blue carbon ecosystems and support some of the richest carbon stocks of any ecosystem on Earth. This thesis addresses the challenge of accurately quantifying carbon stocks in these ecosystems and explores spatial strategies for carbon accounting at both a landscape and pedon level. In particular, the study investigates the effectiveness of partitioning tidal marshes into landscape or pedogeomorphic units (PGUs) based on their geomorphic characteristics and using soil morphological characteristics to estimate soil carbon stocks. Soils from 32 separate marshes were described and sampled along transects, representing four different PGUs (back barrier, …
