Perceived Quality Of Senior Care In An Assisted Living Facility Following The Outbreak Of Covid-19, Kaylie Hill
Perceived Quality Of Senior Care In An Assisted Living Facility Following The Outbreak Of Covid-19, Kaylie Hill
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a monumental obstacle to the healthcare field in terms of severely reducing the number of healthcare workers. Among the many industries affected by staffing shortages are assisted living facilities (ALFs), in which residents are dependent on care staff for daily assistance. This study sought to investigate whether long-term residents of ALFs perceive a difference in the quality of their care under the circumstances of the pandemic as opposed to those of pre-pandemic times. Semi-structured interviews were facilitated with 10 long-term residents who have been residing in an Omaha ALF since prior to the outbreak of …

The Second World War ended with the exposure of the Nazi death camps and the threat of global nuclear annihilation. The former disclosed the depths of human depravity and the latter warned us about the severity of the consequences that could await us as a result. The grimness of each, much less both, had the effect of shielding from our collective consciousness the equally dire warnings from the First World War that had occurred only a couple of decades earlier. INTRODUCTION: Painful lumbar spinal disorders represent a leading cause of disability in the US and worldwide. Interventional treatments for lumbar disorders are an effective treatment for the pain and disability from low back pain. Although many established and emerging interventional procedures are currently available, there exists a need for a defined guideline for their appropriateness, effectiveness, and safety.
OBJECTIVE: The ASPN Back Guideline was developed to provide clinicians the most comprehensive review of interventional treatments for lower back disorders. Clinicians should utilize the ASPN Back Guideline to evaluate the quality of the literature, safety, and efficacy of interventional treatments for …

The Adoption Of The Hpv Vaccine School-Entry Requirement In Puerto Rico: How Practical Lessons Can Inform Future Vaccine Policies, C. Vázquez-Otero, Elizabeth Lockhart
Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research Articles
Vaccine requirements are policy-level strategies used to improve population health outcomes; however, discourse politicization of vaccines may hinder adoption and implementation. An example of the complexities related to adoption of vaccine policies in the United States (US) is the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine school-entry requirement. In 2018, Puerto Rico's (PR) Department of Health adopted this policy. This study assessed stakeholders' recommendations for adoption of the HPV vaccine school-entry requirement that could inform future vaccine policies. Stakeholders (e.g., researchers, members of medical and non-profit organizations) were interviewed from May to August 2018. Participants (n = 20) discussed recommendations for public health …
Debs And The Federal Equity Jurisdiction, Aditya Bamzai, Samuel L. Bray
Debs And The Federal Equity Jurisdiction, Aditya Bamzai, Samuel L. Bray
Notre Dame Law Review
The United States can sue for equitable relief without statutory authorization. The leading case on this question is In re Debs, and how to understand that case is of both historical and contemporary importance. Debs was a monumental opinion that prompted responses in the political platforms of major parties, presidential addresses, and enormous academic commentary. In the early twentieth century, Congress enacted several pieces of labor legislation that reduced Debs’s importance in the specific context of strikes. But in other contexts, the question whether the United States can bring suit in equity remains disputed to this day. The …
The Constitutional Law Of Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark
The Constitutional Law Of Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark
Notre Dame Law Review
The current debate over constitutional interpretation often proceeds on the assumption that the Constitution does not provide rules for its own interpretation. Accordingly, several scholars have attempted to identify applicable rules by consulting external sources that governed analogous legal texts (such as statutes, treaties, contracts, etc.). The distinctive function of the Constitution—often forgotten or overlooked—renders these analogies largely unnecessary. The Constitution was an instrument used by the people of the several States to transfer a fixed set of sovereign rights and powers from one group of sovereigns (the States) to another sovereign (the federal government), while maintaining the “States” as …

Using Commonly-Available Technologies To Create Online Multimedia Lessons Through The Application Of The Cognitive Theory Of Multimedia Learning, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Christa Kiersch
Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship
Principles derived from the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML; Mayer in: Multimedia learning, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2021) provide valuable guidance for enlisting commonly-available technologies to create effective online multimedia lessons. Specifically, CTML can guide instructional designers on the use of slide-sharing programs to create concise, narrated animation segments; the use of survey programs to interpolate questions and prompts between these segments to facilitate generative learning activities; and the use of video-sharing sites to provide learners with control over relatively superficial aspects of instruction. The application of CTML to the design of online multimedia lessons raises a number of …

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa
Introduction and importance: Thyroid cancer accounts for majority of endocrine cancers with follicular thyroid cancer the second most common. It tends to spread via hematogenous route with distant metastasis thus besides presenting as a neck mass it may also present with symptoms tallying to regions of metastasis which may misguide the diagnosis. We report a case of a 50-year-old man who presented with features of appendicitis only to discover metastatic right iliac bone follicular thyroid cancer. We describe our experience on diagnostic formulation, radiological work up, surgery, radioactive iodine therapy and follow up.
Case presentation: 50-year-old man presenting with acute …

Classification And Challenges In The Histopathological Diagnosis Of Peripheral T-Cell Lymphomas, Emphasis On The Who-Haem5 Updates, Carlos Murga-Zamalloa, Kedar Inamdar
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Articles
Mature T-cell lymphomas represent neoplastic expansions of T-cell lymphocytes with a post-thymic derivation. Most of these tumors feature aggressive clinical behavior and challenging histopathological diagnosis and classification. Novel findings in the genomic landscape of T-cell lymphomas are helping to improve the understanding of the biology and the molecular mechanisms that underly its clinical behavior. The most recent WHO-HAEM5 classification of hematolymphoid tumors introduced novel molecular and histopathological findings that will aid in the diagnostic classification of this group of neoplasms. The current review article summarizes the most relevant diagnostic features of peripheral T-cell lymphomas with an emphasis on the updates …

The Relationship Between Demographics And Early And Later Motor Problems In Children With Motor Difficulties, Promise Robinson
The Relationship Between Demographics And Early And Later Motor Problems In Children With Motor Difficulties, Promise Robinson
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
A child’s achievement of motor milestones could result in later motor problems in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). This study aimed to explore potential associations between early and later motor problems and demographic characteristics (such as race/ethnicity) in children with DCD. One hundred and thirteen parents/caregivers of children aged between 5 to 18 years with motor difficulties were asked to answer an online survey about early motor milestones, demographics, and current motor problems of children. The proper distribution for minority groups could not be found due to the sample being self-selected, however the focus was shifted to the achievement …
Longing For Cedar: Tracing Indigenous Family In The Pacific Northwest From Longhouses To Urban Sprawl And Bureaucratic Command, Darcy Gray
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The Coast Salish are a network of related Indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest. Their lifestyles have been challenged by Euroamericans for generations. Using archival sources from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and primary photographic sources, this study focuses on how domestic life changed for Coast Salish people across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I explore pre-colonial settlements and longhouses, interracial marriages during colonization, and boarding schools for Indigenous children after U.S. power solidified. The transformation of Coast Salish life induced by oppressive power structures illustrates the vital role of family ties in the origins and evolution of Coast …
Pupillometry Reveals Insight Into Metacognitive Processes During Encoding, Britney Le
Pupillometry Reveals Insight Into Metacognitive Processes During Encoding, Britney Le
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Metacognitions are the processes associated with how well we learn and monitor our study behavior. This can be assessed with judgments of learning (JOLs) during encoding of cue-target word pairs (e.g., dog – bowl), which are predictions on how confident we are that we will remember the target (e.g., bowl) when later presented with the cue (e.g., dog) at retrieval. The easily learned easily remembered (ELER) heuristic states that the easier it is to learn something, the easier it is to be remembered later. However, recent studies using eye tracking show that more effortful encoding, as indexed by larger pupil …
In Vivo Genetic Analysis Of Schizophrenia Through A Novel Cell Death Paradigm, Hannah Selvarathinam
In Vivo Genetic Analysis Of Schizophrenia Through A Novel Cell Death Paradigm, Hannah Selvarathinam
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects a person’s thoughts and actions. Compartmentalized Cell Elimination (CCE) is a novel cell death program, where three parts of the cell die differently. CCE can be used as a tool to address questions about psychiatric illnesses. Through a forward genetic screen looking for CCE defects, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) network stability gene atln-1/atlastin and microtubule (MT) severing ATPase spas-1/spastin, were found to be linked to Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), a neurodegenerative disease. A schizophrenic behavioral assay was performed on the CCE mutants atln-1, spas-1, hop-1, sel-12, and ptl-1 to explore the question of …

Life Within The Red River Gorge, An Artistic Exploration Of Anthropogenetic Change In Caves, Marcy Davis
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
At the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, fauna and flora above ground are abundant due to it being a National Natural Landmark; however, this is not the same for underground. Caves play a vital role in understanding and predicting climate change, yet they are becoming detrimentally altered. Currently, cave features are being destroyed, which results in a loss of geological history. An art exhibition called, Anthropocene, at the UTA Gallery West was created to enlighten viewers on the significance of caves. Cave art installations of glass blown stalactites, expanding foam flowstone, and textile metal cave coral were installed to visually …

The Role Of Female Offenders In Sex Trafficking Rings, Caroline Johnson
The Role Of Female Offenders In Sex Trafficking Rings, Caroline Johnson
Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study examines the role of female offenders in sex trafficking rings. Using the Human Trafficking Study database, I found 502 cases that had clear information coded about convictions, sentences, and genders. It was hypothesized that women typically receive a lower sentence than men do. Bivariate analysis revealed that to be true. In addition, I compared conviction rates between the two genders, finding that women are more likely to plead guilty in comparison to men.
Using a smaller sample with additional information, I also isolated the roles that women play in a sex trafficking ring. I found that 48% were …

Human Trafficking: Physical And Non-Physical Force Factors And Their Links To Victim Industry, Mary Caroline Kerr
Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper examines the occurrence of different types of physical and non-physical force factors with two distinct human trafficking industries: sex trafficking and labor trafficking. This research’s main goal is to identify if there are specific uses of force that are more likely to be used in either sex or labor trafficking. The Human Trafficking Study, a database housed at the University of Arkansas, is used as a sample for this study. Two-sided, two sample proportion tests were conducted to establish if there is a statistical significance between the amount of physical force used in sex trafficking and the amount …
