Investigation Of Geopolymer Based Soil Stabilization Methods For Expedient Airfield Pavement Surfaces, Brett Albertson Dec 2022

Investigation Of Geopolymer Based Soil Stabilization Methods For Expedient Airfield Pavement Surfaces, Brett Albertson

All Theses

The United States Air Force (USAF) has the unique capability of being able to interdict superior airpower anywhere, at any time. However, superior airpower is only as effective as the amount of time an aircraft can spend in a particular area. The closer an aircraft can get to the mission need, the more time that can be spent in the air, or the less time that must be spent moving in and out of the operational area. Through the use of skilled and experienced men and women, the USAF is able to apply expedient and unsurfaced airfield paving techniques that …

Mysteerio: Multi-Regional Environmentally Extended Input-Output Model For United States, Yash Srivastava

All Theses

This research work titled My State Environmentally Extended Regional Input-Output (MYSTEERIO) is based on the concept of multi-regional environmentally extended input-output (MREEIO), which is a combination of lifecycle thinking and economics principles. Numerous studies have highlighted the advantages of using this methodology to determine the environmental impacts associated with economic activities for a region. However, no prior attempt has been made to conduct a state-level analysis for the US. This research work thus tries to estimate the impacts embodied due to the consumption of goods and services at the state level by using the MREEIO principles. Extensive coverage of the …

Iron Phosphate Glass For The Immobilization Of Dehalogenated Salt Waste, Matthew Aaron Page Dec 2022

Iron Phosphate Glass For The Immobilization Of Dehalogenated Salt Waste, Matthew Aaron Page

All Theses

Electrochemical reprocessing can be used to recycle presently stored nuclear fuel and consists of dissolving that used fuel in molten salt and the waste produced from these processes is a small amount of a high-level salt waste. Vitrification has been selected as the primary means of safely disposing high and low level radioactive waste. This is due to glass’ ability to incorporate many elements within its matrix, and it is chemically durable with the addition of network formers and other glass forming chemicals. With over 90,000 tonnes of nuclear waste in the United States, the avoidance of additional steps required …

PALARA: Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association

A Snapshot Of Statelessness In The Western Hemisphere: Denationalization In Modern Day Dominican Republic, Javiela Evangelista Dec 2022

A Snapshot Of Statelessness In The Western Hemisphere: Denationalization In Modern Day Dominican Republic, Javiela Evangelista

PALARA: Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association

In 2013, the Dominican Republic’s Constitutional Tribunal ruling 168/13 retroactively revoked the citizenship of over 200,000 Dominican nationals of Haitian descent, thus creating the fifth largest stateless population in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere today (IACHR 2015). The ruling simply made legal the longstanding, racialized and clandestine practice of converting Haitian descendant Dominican citizens into foreigners. The ruling, as well as the laws that precede it, demonstrate how anti-blackness and racialization are processes through which citizenship is measured and mobilized to reorder society and formalize hierarchies. Dominicans of Haitian descent who are stateless are habitually denied …

Study Of The Ai-Feynman Package, Parvat Sapkota

2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

At a particular point during the scientific process, we need to understand the relationships between different variables. In science, generally, the relationships are derived using the first principle. Developing another way to determine the relationship among variables of a physical system will help to boost not only overall scientific research but may also aid greatly in the scientific discovery process. Symbolic regression, which is a process of discovering a symbolic expression to describe the given data, can be used to determine relationships between variables. However, the problem with symbolic regression is that we have to go through many combinations before …

Senstive Enantiomeric Analysis Of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones In Bacterial Matrices, Abiud E. Portillo Dec 2022

Senstive Enantiomeric Analysis Of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones In Bacterial Matrices, Abiud E. Portillo

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Communication between unicellular organism has long been studied with many facets yet to be discovered. A specific type of communication in gram-negative bacteria is quorum sensing (QS). N-acyl homoserine lactones (N-HLs) are the molecular signals in this process. At a critical concentration of N-HLs, all bacteria of the same population stop behaving like individuals and in a concerted manner induce a specific gene expression which ultimately benefits the entire population in major. This phenomenon has been coined with the term quorum sensing with the main signaling molecules dubbed L-N-acyl homoserine lactones (L-N-HL). Quorum sensing signaling pathways have their influence in …

Investigating The Frictional Properties Of Organic Matter And Pore Structure Of Organic-Rich Shales With Atomic Force Microscopy And Scanning Electron Microscopy, Farnood Sobhbidari

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

Understanding geomechanical properties of shales, such as stiffness properties and fracture toughness, is important in different areas of petroleum industry-related activities including fracturing efficiency, petroleum flow to the wellbores, and induced seismicity. Nanoscale to microscale experiments on shale samples require a much smaller sample compared to macroscale experiments. This is a major advantage because irregularly-shaped drill cuttings from shales can be used for experimental analyses, such as nanoindentation or atomic force microscopy (AFM). However, a characterization of mechanical properties at the nano- to micro-scale is a relatively new addition to classical geomechanical experiments on shales, and there is still lack …

Approximate Query Processing Using Deep Learning And Database Techniques, Shohedul Hasan Dec 2022

Approximate Query Processing Using Deep Learning And Database Techniques, Shohedul Hasan

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Data is generated at an unprecedented rate surpassing our ability to analyze them. In real applications, it is often impractical to find an exact answer by traversing the entire data. As a result, Approximate Query Processing (AQP) is getting extremely popular, which finds an approximate answer in a quick time by sacrificing a fraction of accuracy. This dissertation focuses on developing different AQP techniques to solve fundamental database problems using deep learning. Moreover, we build a fast and scalable algorithm for Quantile Regression, a well-known regression technique that can help minimize the uncertainty in the recent deep learning-based AQP solutions, …

Pedagogical Uses For Machine Translation: Korean L2 Writing, Manali Khandekar

2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Korean is a particularly challenging language for English speakers due to its typological distance from English, and as such, learning Korean typically requires hundreds or thousands of additional hours of instruction to reach intermediate and advanced levels. One solution that this study analyzes is the use of a rapidly improving technology: machine translation (MT). Participants were tasked with producing a short composition in Korean and then trained to use MT-based strategies to improve their writing; they also completed pre- and post-surveys to gauge their attitudes toward machine translation. Results showed improvement in vocabulary choice and grammar as well as case/locative …

Blowing Bubbles (And Seeing Where They Go): A Study Of Partition Spaces And Continuous Functions Between Them, Gabriel Cantanelli Dec 2022

Blowing Bubbles (And Seeing Where They Go): A Study Of Partition Spaces And Continuous Functions Between Them, Gabriel Cantanelli

2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The field of topology is concerned with the study of “topological spaces,” mathematical objects used to describe space and change at their most fundamental levels. Within this thesis, a study of a class of topological spaces, called partition spaces, is conducted. Four results concerning such spaces are presented, together with formal proofs and illustrative examples. The first result describes the behavior of limits of sequences in partition spaces. The second result characterizes continuous functions between such spaces. From the first and second results, a third finding is derived that relates continuous functions between partition spaces to limits of sequences in …

What’S Mentoring Got To Do With It: Examining The Role Of Mentoring In The Success Of Historically Black College And Unviersity (Hbcu) Presidents, Jacolahn Deshawn Dudley

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

Over the years there has been an increase in the turnover of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) presidents. As the turnover rates at HBCUs continues to increase, many higher education researchers have noted that HBCUs are currently being plagued by a leadership crisis (Evans et al., 2002; Freeman & Palmer, 2020; Kimbrough, 2017). Despite heavy criticism by media and academic researchers, very few recommendations have been made in regard to combating the “leadership crisis” at HBCUs. Of the studies conducted, researchers have recommended that one way to counter the rapid turnover of HBCU presidents is by engaging in some …

Exploring The Scp Wiki: Community, Digital Horror, And Apocalyptic Fiction, Justin M. Jones Dec 2022

Exploring The Scp Wiki: Community, Digital Horror, And Apocalyptic Fiction, Justin M. Jones

English Theses - Archive

The SCP is a body of user-submitted fiction broadly classified as horror and often compared to other user-submitted horror such as Creepypasta. While these comparisons have been made in research and among the SCP community, the SCP seems to function differently than other such sites. Very little research has been done on the SCP and what exists examines it as a work of horror and as an example of emerging online folklore. This thesis further expands upon this research by examining how the unique community participating on the SCP Wiki shapes the text, how the SCP is not just a …

Foreign Judgments And Foreign Arbitral Awards Enforceability As A Factor And A Guarantee For Foreign Investments: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Rashed Mohammed Arhama Alshamsi Dec 2022

Foreign Judgments And Foreign Arbitral Awards Enforceability As A Factor And A Guarantee For Foreign Investments: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Rashed Mohammed Arhama Alshamsi

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

Foreign investments are considered an efficient and effective instrument to diversify and strengthen the economy; foreign investors generally need guarantees before entering a new market. One of these guarantees is a stable, transparent, predictable legal and judicial system. Such a system must be open to foreign laws and judgments as well as foreign arbitral awards, and it must also be flexible to increase foreign investments. Saudi Arabia has tried since the 50s’ to be more attractive to foreign investors and investments by enacting legislation and creating a modern court system to diversify their economy. However, the discretion of Saudi judges …

Seeing Beyond: A Feminist Psychoanalytic Approach To The Politics Of The Cinematic Gaze, Sofia Koukia Dec 2022

Seeing Beyond: A Feminist Psychoanalytic Approach To The Politics Of The Cinematic Gaze, Sofia Koukia

Masters Theses

This essay presents a feminist psychoanalytic approach to the cinematic gaze which employs late Lacanian film theory in order to construct a conception of the gaze that allows for its political significance to emerge. The gaze is hereby understood as something that the subject (the spectator) encounters in the object (the film) and, also, as what constitutes the epitome of the cinematic experience. It is regarded as being inherently political, existing within the realm of the Lacanian real in the form of an objet petit a (or object-cause of desire), and exhibiting itself in the world(s) of fantasy and/or desire. …

The College Admissions Process For Returning Citizens And Ex-Offenders At A Small, Private Midwestern College, Donna Bradley Dec 2022

The College Admissions Process For Returning Citizens And Ex-Offenders At A Small, Private Midwestern College, Donna Bradley

Dissertations

It is well-known that higher education faces the challenge of declining enrollment, particularly post-COVID. However, there is a population of students that higher education institutions may overlook, returning citizens and ex-offenders. Reintegration is a challenging endeavor for returning citizens and ex-offenders, without regard to the length of incarceration or the circumstances surrounding system-involvement. They face barriers and stigmatization while attempting to achieve some sense of normalization post-incarceration, including the pursuit of higher education. Using mixed methodology, specifically a qualitative case study and descriptive statistics, the extant research examined the college admission process for returning citizens and ex-offenders through the lens …

Analytical And Theoretical Perspectives On Sport-Related Vr Research: Spatial Presence Manipulation Guidelines, Jihoon Kim Dec 2022

Analytical And Theoretical Perspectives On Sport-Related Vr Research: Spatial Presence Manipulation Guidelines, Jihoon Kim

Journal of Applied Sport Management

As more scholars incorporate VR into their research, theoretical frameworks for empirical investigation and methodological guidelines for manipulation become more crucial. Because VR is a relatively new instrument and validating the implementation of VR can be challenging, scholars need to exercise caution when manipulating stimuli and measuring experimental conditions. Thus, the aim of the current essay is twofold: (a) address various methodological challenges (e.g., manipulation check) in recent VR studies and (b) discuss potential theoretical frameworks for future VR research in sport.
