Traumatized Defendants, Troubled Attorneys: The Impact Of Vicarious Trauma On The Defense Attorney-Client Relationship, Charise Peters Dec 2022

Traumatized Defendants, Troubled Attorneys: The Impact Of Vicarious Trauma On The Defense Attorney-Client Relationship, Charise Peters

Student Theses

Approximately 90% of justice-involved youth have experienced some form of trauma by the time they become involved in the justice system, and attorneys report being negatively impacted by their work with trauma-exposed populations generally. Yet, research has not focused on how varying degrees of youth trauma can impact attorney decisions and if that differs based on youth race. This study, therefore, explored vicarious trauma and its impact on juvenile defense attorneys, including how an attorney’s experience of vicarious trauma impacts case handling and perception of their youth client and how that differs based on client race and trauma history. We …

This study examined the effect of immersion on four constructs related to learning, including memory retention, learner engagement, learning performance in the form of knowledge acquisition, and perceived learning in a virtual …

Role Of Macrophages In Ocular Surface Fibrosis, Alyanna Corpuz Dec 2022

Role Of Macrophages In Ocular Surface Fibrosis, Alyanna Corpuz

Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses

The present study is designed to investigate whether irradiation as used for conditioning regimen to ablate recipient’s diseased bone marrow prior to transplantation could trigger macrophage activation and polarization and whether macrophages could cause the transdifferentiation of ocular surface fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, thus contributing to oGVHD-associated fibrosis.

Bone marrow cells were cultured in M-CSF to obtain M0 macrophages, which were subsequently polarized into M1 and M2 phenotypes using IFN-g + LPS and IL-4, respectively.

The macrophages were exposed to 7 Gy radiation. The effect of irradiation on macrophage activation markers, phagocytosis, and apoptosis was assessed using real-time PCR, confocal microscopy, …

Making Mandates Last: Increasing Female Representation On Corporate Boards In The U.S., Nikki Williams Dec 2022

Making Mandates Last: Increasing Female Representation On Corporate Boards In The U.S., Nikki Williams

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

A lack of female representation on corporate boards has plagued our country for decades. Until a few years ago, there was not a single state or federal regulation that required corporations to fill board seats with female directors. Instead, the federal government talked around the issue. In 2010, the SEC established an optional reporting structure for corporations to communicate their hiring practices, but did little else. With no national plan in place, many states implemented legislation that urged corporations to hire female directors. But this legislation barely moved the needle. The country needed a mandate. And in 2018, California implemented …

Character Spotting And Autonomous Tagging: Offline Handwriting Recognition For Bangla, Korean And Other Alphabetic Scripts, Nishatul Majid, Elisa H. Barney Smith Dec 2022

Character Spotting And Autonomous Tagging: Offline Handwriting Recognition For Bangla, Korean And Other Alphabetic Scripts, Nishatul Majid, Elisa H. Barney Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper demonstrates a framework for offline handwriting recognition using character spotting and autonomous tagging which works for any alphabetic script. Character spotting builds on the idea of object detection to find character elements in unsegmented word images. An autonomous tagging approach is introduced which automates the production of a character image training set by estimating character locations in a word based on typical character size. Although scripts can vary vividly from each other, our proposed approach provides a simple and powerful workflow for unconstrained offline recognition that should work for any alphabetic script with few adjustments. Here we demonstrate …

The COVID Pandemic shut down schools across the country, leaving K-12 schools unprepared for virtual learning. In this mixed methods study, I examined data gathered from my 8th-grade science classes to assess the effectiveness of asynchronous instruction. My original research question was: How much if at all, did learning outcomes differ as a function of how the lessons were taught (uninterrupted instructional video versus interrupted/interactive Edpuzzle video)? Based on a preliminary examination of data, my study expanded into how self-regulated learning affected students’ comprehension, interest, and motivation. Study results showed no statistical differences in students’ comprehension based on how lessons …

Energy Storage Capacity Determination For Agc Frequency Modulation In The Power System With Wind And Photovoltaic Power Based On The Stochastic Simulation And Emd, Haijing Yang, Yufei Rao, Chaohui Li, Xin Sun

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

With the deep penetration of wind and photovoltaic power, the moment of inertia in the power system is reduced, resulting in the problem of frequency modulation for the automatic generation control of the power system. Energy storage is widely applied in the frequency modulation of power systems due to its fast reaction and accuracy. As a result, random simulation and empirical mode decomposition are combined to propose an energy storage capacity determination method in automatic generation control. Firstly, the empirical mode decomposition is utilized to decompose the regional control deviation into the high-frequency and low-frequency components. The energy storage frequency …
