Hydraulic Computations For Stepped Concrete Overlays Of Embankment Dams, Tony L. Wahl, Sherry L. Hunt, Kem C. Kadavy, Henry T. Falvey
Hydraulic Computations For Stepped Concrete Overlays Of Embankment Dams, Tony L. Wahl, Sherry L. Hunt, Kem C. Kadavy, Henry T. Falvey
Protections Conference
One method for rehabilitating and modernizing embankment dams is the addition of a concrete overlay that protects the embankment and allows floods to pass safely over the dam. Roller compacted concrete is commonly used, which makes it practical to use a stepped construction that also enhances energy dissipation. Analysis of flow conditions over such structures requires computation of aerated flow and its effects on flow depth, training wall design, and energy dissipation. This paper describes Spillway Pro, an energy-based water surface profile calculation tool for smooth spillway chutes (Wahl et al. 2019), recently improved to also analyze stepped chutes. The …

Quasi-Prototype Size Testing Of Wedge-Shaped Block For Armoring Embankment Dams And Levees, Francisco Javier Caballero, Miguel Ángel Toledo, Rafael Moran, Javier Peraita
Protections Conference
A series of tests of wedge-shaped blocks intended for armoring embankment dams and levees was carried out in a new experimental facility (‘Hydraulic Experimentation Facility—Luis Ruano’) under quasi-prototype conditions. This unique facility is located in the canal leading to the Laverné reservoir (Zaragoza, Spain) with a maximum vertical drop of 7 m and discharge up to 9 m3s −1. The aim was to conduct experimental research on technologies to protect embankment dams and dikes against overflowing erosion under quasi-prototype conditions. The results of the tests demonstrate the ability of the WSBs to withstand high unit …

Online Intercultural Exchanges In A French For The Professions Course, Deborah Reisinger
Global Advances in Business Communication
This research study explores the experiences of post-secondary students in the United States and the France (n=28) who participated together in synchronous online intercultural exchanges (OIE) in the context of two distinct World Languages for Specific Purposes (WLSP) courses. The study design draws on research in OIE and WLSP, as well as on the researcher’s experience conducting a pilot OIE during the pandemic (spring 2021). Findings suggest that US students benefit considerably from these exchanges, self-reporting gains in business content, cultural knowledge, and language proficiency. Enthusiasm for the project demonstrates that OIE projects can also increase learner engagement and motivation …

“Any Time, Any Place, Any Path, Any Pace:” A Curricular Design For The Teaching Of Languages For Specific Purposes In The Pandemic Era And Beyond, Steven J. Sacco, Martha Pereszlenyi-Pinter, Diana M. Ruggiero
Global Advances in Business Communication
As US universities face unprecedented financial challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, university officials have begun reducing and even eliminating foreign language programs. NYU marketing professor Scott Galloway is even predicting the demise of dozens of US colleges and universities as they depend almost exclusively on tuition (Galloway, 2020). Public health officials question whether pre-pandemic educational conditions will resume even after the end of the pandemic. Costly safety measures at schools and universities will have to be implemented. To safeguard the teaching of LSP courses, this essay proposes the adoption of a Center for LSP Studies, preferably anchored at a …

Riprap Protection Exposed To Overtopping Phenomena: A Review Of Laboratory Experimental Models, Théo Dezert, Geir Helge Kiplesund, Fjóla Guðrún Sigtryggsdóttir
Protections Conference
There are increasing demands from dam safety regulations and guidelines to upgrade the rockfill dams, especially in Norway where over 180 large rockfill dams are present. To protect the hydraulic structure against overtopping events or leakages, it is important to use defence mechanisms such as a protective layer of riprap on the downstream slope. In this article, we display 9 experimental setups of riprap, conducted at the hydraulic laboratory of NTNU (Trondheim) and subjected to overtopping phenomena with increasing water discharge, until the complete failure of the model. These tests were performed on models with dumped and placed riprap, with …

Why Is Epinephrine Not The Drug Of Choice In Cardiogenic Shock?, Esther Vorovich
Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics
Through the years, epinephrine has been the drug of choice for patients with cardiogenic shock. However, epinephrine was clinically inferior to norepinephrine in comparison studies because of the negative patient outcomes, which were statistically significant. These effects include type B lactic acidosis, tachycardia, increased myocardial oxygen demand, and arrhythmias.

Profound Vasoplegia After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Subhasis Chatterjee
Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics
Vasoplegic shock after cardiac surgery is characterized by a high cardiac output, low systemic vascular resistance, refractory hypotension, and ongoing need for vasopressors. In this case, management considerations are discussed, including vasoactive medications and other adjuncts to sustain a satisfactory mean arterial pressure and improve outcomes.

Student Engagement In An Online Engineering Afterschool Program During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Virginia Snodgrass Rangel, Jerrod A. Henderson, Chelsea Martinez, Rick Greer
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
The COVID-19 pandemic forced much of schooling online and limited students’ access to informal learning opportunities such as afterschool programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate how fourth- and fifth-grade students engaged in an online engineering program and what factors influenced their engagement. We drew on a four-dimensional model of student engagement to describe how students engaged in the afterschool engineering program and to identify the factors that enhanced or inhibited engagement. Using a case study design, we drew on interviews with six program mentors and ten students and observation data from weekly Zoom sessions throughout the 2020–2021 …
Reperfusion Injury In Acute Myocardial Infarction Shock- Role Of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices, Finn Gustafsson
Reperfusion Injury In Acute Myocardial Infarction Shock- Role Of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices, Finn Gustafsson
Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics
The efficacy of mechanical circulatory support in acute myocardial infarction is dependent upon the size of the infarct. If applied early, mechanical support to reduce reperfusion injury appears to be effective in reducing infarct size in animal studies. The optimal timing of reperfusion is uncertain and requires further investigation. Efficient unloading appears to be essential in increasing the efficacy of the type of mechanical support and may favor one over another.
Racial Variations In Shock Presentation And Outcome, Steven Bailey
Racial Variations In Shock Presentation And Outcome, Steven Bailey
Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics
Working toward inclusive strategies for data sampling, trials, and triage is essential. Whatever the approach, it is important to do better than what has been done in the past when considering race and ethnicity in patient care. Although there may be limited publications with information on this topic, they have shown clear differences in patient outcomes with possible associations with gender, race, and ethnicity. It is critical to view the implications of this on socioeconomic status, access, resources, patient phenotypes, and patient desires and expectations. The disparities must first be recognized before any treatment options can be identified.
Hemodynamic Goals In Shock Management: Is There One Target For All?, Maya Guglin
Hemodynamic Goals In Shock Management: Is There One Target For All?, Maya Guglin
Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics
The current guidelines for managing cardiogenic shock lack specificity and clarification. The main criterion for cardiogenic shock is low cardiac output, and the most important goal is to achieve adequate output from a shock state. Because of the complex nature of cardiogenic shock, a “one-size-fits-all" outline may not be the best solution. Historically, hemodynamic goals in cardiogenic shock are copied from septic shock. Because septic shock and cardiogenic shock are different hemodynamic entities, the goals should be different.

Overflow Tests On Grass-Covered Embankments At The Living Lab Hedwige-Prosperpolder: An Overview, André R. Koelewijn, Stephan J.H. Rikkert, Patrik Peeters, Davy Depreiter, Myron Van Damme, Wouter Zomer
Protections Conference
In regions with a temperate climate, a well-maintained grass sod on a clay layer is considered a reliable protection for dams and dikes. In the Living Lab Hedwige-Prosperpolder, on the left bank of the Scheldt river straddling the border between Belgium and the Netherlands, a series of 27 overflow tests with a purpose-built overflow generator has been executed to determine the strength of the protective layer against erosion at various conditions. The goal of this paper is to inform on the executed test program and the initial results. From the results, it was concluded that in general, a high-quality grass …
