For the Cybersecurity capstone project, our team was given a webserver and website for the company Akwaaba. We were tasked to fix all vulnerabilities, keep the server up to date, and help maintain the site with uptime being the priority. After the first two milestones were complete, we were to attempt to hack another team’s server while they attempted to do the same to us. When the attack phase began on Wednesday 10/26, our team discovered the other team had not changed any of their original passwords, so we took control within thirty minutes and took it down soon after. …

Data networking is a complex field. Designing networks is a complex task. Simulators have been developed to create hypothetical designs with configuration settings for evaluating architectures and settings. At least 2 simulators are freely available to IT professionals and students. This project involves researching the landscape of free network design simulators to determine how many there are, then downloading, testing, evaluating, and documenting the features of each by designing, on each, a network with multiple routers, switches, and host devices using IPv4 and IPv6, defining features appropriate for classroom use in a university, and finally determining which solution fits the …

C-Day Computing Showcase
This project makes use of speech recognition in Python libraries from Google, such as Google Speech-to-Text. The program first installs the dependencies that are required to run the program. The program then asks the user for their input. The user has the option of either exit the program, having the text read back to them, or responding to the conversation. If the user decides to have the text read back to them, the program will use the Google Text-to-Speech library to convert the text to speech. The purpose of this project is to understand how to implement speech recognition in …

Ur-285 Operation Enduring Freedom: Improving Mission Effectiveness By Identifying Trends In Successful Terrorism, Dalton A. Shaver
C-Day Computing Showcase
This research examines how the characteristics of terrorist attacks predict the chance of an attack succeeding, where an attack is defined as successful if the intended attack type is carried out. Data was analyzed across three geographical missions within Operation Enduring Freedom: Trans-Sahara, Horn of Africa, and the Philippines. Using predicted probabilities of success obtained from logistic regression models, the medians were plotted to compare the characteristics of terrorist attacks across missions. By determining the specific features of attacks that produce the highest probabilities of success, the effectiveness of Operation Enduring Freedom can be improved by focusing counter-terrorism training and …
Ur-302 Using Quantum Computing To Determine The Optimal Path On Cascading Graphs, Michael B. Swann, Ethan K. Hunt
Ur-302 Using Quantum Computing To Determine The Optimal Path On Cascading Graphs, Michael B. Swann, Ethan K. Hunt
C-Day Computing Showcase
Quantum computing has completely changed the computing paradigm. These special computers leverage the unique properties of quantum mechanics to solve problems that a classical computer cannot solve in polynomial time. Quantum mechanics such as superposition and entanglement are used to boost computational power exponentially in many problems . Many traditionally NP-complete problems, such as breaking the encryption of public-private key systems, are solvable with quantum computing in polynomial time. In this project, we will review quantum computing basics using real quantum computers and build on those basics to solve a subset of a graph optimization problems using both existing and …
Stochastic Approach To Hydrological Dam Safety In The Framework Of The New Dam Safety Standards In Spain, Iván Gabriel-Martin, Francisco J. Caballero, Álvaro Sordo-Ward, Luis Garrote
Stochastic Approach To Hydrological Dam Safety In The Framework Of The New Dam Safety Standards In Spain, Iván Gabriel-Martin, Francisco J. Caballero, Álvaro Sordo-Ward, Luis Garrote
Protections Conference
The approval of the Technical Safety Standards for dams and reservoirs in Spain in 2021 increased the hydrological safety requirements, being necessary to check if measures have to be implemented in dams designed according to the prior standards. Some of these dams have scarce instrumentation and lack of hydrometeorological data. This work proposes a simple but sounded fully-stochastic methodology for assessing the hydrological safety of dams within this situation, potentially applicable outside academia. The methodology has been applied to a case study based on a real dam, and compared the results obtained to those of the standard deterministic procedure. We …

Assessment Of The Risk Of Failure Of Embankment Dams And Fluvial Levees By Overflowing: The Edf Practice And Research Needs, Jean-Robert Courivaud
Protections Conference
According to the French regulation, EDF (Electricité de France) must perform dam safety risk analysis for all dams which height is above 10 meters. Dam safety risk analysis includes a potential failure mode analysis, where overflowing erosion must be taken into account most of the time. In such cases, the dam owner must determine if the overflow will erode or not the dam or levee and form a breach and, if a breach forms, what is the breach outflow hydrograph. The criteria and methodologies used by EDF to answer these questions are presented. Research needs to fill the gaps and …

Wirewall A Follow Up: Labratory And Field Measurements Of Wave Overtopping, Tim Pullen, Jenny Brown, Margaret Yelland, Robin Pascal, Richard Pinnell, Chris Cardwell, David Jones
Protections Conference
At the Protections 2018 conference, the WireWall wave overtopping research project was introduced. WireWall uses recent advances in high frequency capacitance wire technology that can measure overtopping data. Wave overtopping has now been measured in the laboratory and in the field using the WireWall system. Here we provide an update on the validation of the system in flume tests and results from the first field measurement campaign.
Before deployment in the field, an extensive set of tests were carried out in one of the 2D wave flumes at HR Wallingford. These tests simulated known wave conditions from a buoy near …

Methodology For Calculating The Response Of Porous Media For Evaluating Grass Response To Overtopping Loads, Myron Von Damme, Dennis Den Ouden-Van Der Horst
Protections Conference
Grass covers offer a level of erosion protection against hydrodynamic loads induced by overtopping waves. The development of an accurate failure criterion for grass covers has been hampered by the lack of understanding of how grass fails. Methods have been developed to predict the hydrodynamic loads that act on the levee surface and consequently are transmitted to the porous grass cover and subsoil. However, it is unknown how these hydrodynamic surface loads on the soil are distributed amongst the pore water pressures and effective stresses, thereby offering a significant challenge for engineers to simulate the transmission of stresses into the …

Student Interpretation And Use Arguments: Evidence-Based, Student-Led Grading, Ll Aull
Journal of Response to Writing
Assigning grades is conventionally the exclusive, lonely terrain of the instructor, even as other aspects of teaching and responding to student writing are collaborative. As an alternative that promotes student engagement and agency, labor-based contract grading is used in a growing number of writing classrooms. This article strives to add to these conversations by describing evidence-based, student-led grading as an option that engages students as well as a broad construct of writing. This approach foregrounds students’ own response to their writing, in the form of evidence-based interpretation and use arguments for their grades. It engages students in the process of …
Feedback Conversations: An Activity To Initiate Instructor-Student Dialogues About Writing Development, Sarah M. Lacy
Feedback Conversations: An Activity To Initiate Instructor-Student Dialogues About Writing Development, Sarah M. Lacy
Journal of Response to Writing
In this essay I discuss the pedagogical implications of a classroom activity in which students work reflectively with instructor feedback provided to their writing. Using the comments feature in Google Docs, these “Feedback Conversations” create a dialogue between student and instructor using feedback as the exigence for collaboration in developing a student’s writing process. This activity addresses the work of Anthony Edgington (2020) and Pamela Gay (1998), by offering an exercise which allows instructors to remain reflective on their feedback practices, while also instigating a “conversation” between student and instructor. By offering a virtual space to house this conversational exercise, …
Crafting A Writing Response Community Through Contract Grading, Sarah Klotz, Kristina Reardon
Crafting A Writing Response Community Through Contract Grading, Sarah Klotz, Kristina Reardon
Journal of Response to Writing
As labor-based grading contracts gain momentum in first year writing classrooms, new kinds of response to writing take center stage. We explore how session notes composed by embedded peer tutors and students become rich tools in a writing process and create a gateway to the writing center for first-year students. By reading session notes in conversation with students’ reflective writing, we put forward three key findings: students articulate a relationship between building confidence in their writing and their willingness to seek, receive, and value feedback; students discuss how the labor required for an ‘A’ pushed them to access and learn …
Feedback As Boundary Object: Intersections Of Writing, Response, And Research, Lindsey Harding, Joshua King, Anya Bonanno, Joseph Powell
Feedback As Boundary Object: Intersections Of Writing, Response, And Research, Lindsey Harding, Joshua King, Anya Bonanno, Joseph Powell
Journal of Response to Writing
While a great deal is known about instructor response to student writing—from commenting practices to student perceptions—less is known about how feedback impacts students’ writing and writerly development. While we set out to study students’ explicit engagement with written instructor feedback, our initial experimental design was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Accordingly, we describe the dialogic collaborative process that emerged as we considered both the data we were able to collect and, in turn, feedback anew. This article proposes that feedback on student writing is a boundary object which affords those interacting with it the opportunity for collaboration despite the …
Feedback Practices In Hybrid Writing Courses: Instructor Choices About Modality And Timing, Ariel M. Goldenthal, Jessica Matthews, Courtney Adams Wooten, Brian Fitzpatrick, Lourdes Fernandez
Feedback Practices In Hybrid Writing Courses: Instructor Choices About Modality And Timing, Ariel M. Goldenthal, Jessica Matthews, Courtney Adams Wooten, Brian Fitzpatrick, Lourdes Fernandez
Journal of Response to Writing
Despite a wealth of research on feedback practices in synchronous and asynchronous courses, little has been done to investigate such practices in hybrid writing pedagogy. How do instructors make choices about providing feedback when both instructional modes are operating in a course?
A qualitative study conducted with fourteen instructors who teach hybrid writing courses at a large state university reveals how they navigate a series of choices about providing feedback on student writing. This study shows that instructional modality, use of the LMS, and labor conditions influence the decisions instructors make about how and when to provide feedback, especially on …
Using Lessons From Collaboratively Processing Written Corrective Feedback, Nicholas Carr
Using Lessons From Collaboratively Processing Written Corrective Feedback, Nicholas Carr
Journal of Response to Writing
This case study investigates how two English language learners use knowledge co-constructed while collaboratively processing written corrective feedback (WCF) on jointly produced texts. It does so through the lens of sociocultural theory (SCT). This study extends the extant literature by investigating how co-constructed knowledge emerging from their interactions was manifested in subsequent individual writing and speaking tasks which were similar—but not identical—to the original collaborative writing tasks. Data were collected from video recordings of participants’ interactions as they collaboratively processed WCF; individual retrospective interviews, during which participants watched the video recordings and identified what they learned; and observation of individual …
