Semantic Segmentation Based Deep Learning Approaches For Weed Detection, Puranjit Singh
Semantic Segmentation Based Deep Learning Approaches For Weed Detection, Puranjit Singh
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Global increase in herbicide use to control weeds has led to issues such as evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds, off-target herbicide movement, etc. Precision agriculture advocates Site Specific Weed Management (SSWM) application to achieve precise and right amount of herbicide spray and reduce off-target herbicide movement. Recent advancements in Deep Learning (DL) have opened possibilities for adaptive and accurate weed recognitions for field based SSWM applications with traditional and emerging spraying equipment; however, challenges exist in identifying the DL model structure and train the model appropriately for accurate and rapid model applications over varying crop/weed growth stages and environment. In our …
Methods For Single-Cell And Low-Input Proteomics, Yiran Liang
Methods For Single-Cell And Low-Input Proteomics, Yiran Liang
Theses and Dissertations
Single-Cell Proteomics (SCP) can provide unique insights into biological processes by resolving heterogeneity that is obscured by bulk measurements. Gains in the overall sensitivity and proteome coverage through improvements in sample processing and analysis increase the information content obtained from each cell, particularly for less abundant proteins. In addition to achieving in-depth proteome coverage from single cells, higher throughput measurements enable large-scale and statistically significant features within single cell populations. This dissertation focuses on method development to improve the sensitivity and throughput of SCP based on the nanoPOTS (nanodroplet Processing in One pot for Trace Samples) platform. The methods discussed …

Organizations around the world have increasingly employed data for a variety of purposes, and nonprofit organizations are no exception. This article reviews the use of data in nonprofit organizations, including the types of data collected and accessed, the motivations for data capture, and the barriers to systematic use of data. The literature shows that nonprofit organizations capture a variety of data, including public and financial data, performance measures, program evaluation data, and volunteer information. Organizations use these with diverse motivations such as program or organizational improvement, marketing, and accountability. Prominent barriers faced by organizations include challenges in identifying meaningful information, …
Fault Tolerant Robotics Using Active Diagnosis Of Partially Observable Systems And Optimized Path Planning For Underwater Message Ferrying, Devon M. Webb
Theses and Dissertations
Underwater robotic vehicles are used in a variety of environments that would be dangerous for humans. For these vehicles to be successful, they need to be tolerant of a variety of internal and external faults. To be resilient to internal faults, the system must be capable of determining the source of faulty behavior. However many different faults within a robotic vehicle can create identical faulty behavior, which makes the vehicles impossible to diagnose using conventional methods. I propose a novel active diagnosis method for differentiating between faults that would otherwise have identical behavior. I apply this method to a communication …

INTRODUCTION: Chemoradiotherapy (CRT) has been associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular (CV) adverse events (CVAE). Coronary artery calcium scoring (CAC) has shown to predict coronary events beyond the traditional CV risk factors. This study examines whether CAC, measured on standard of care, non-contrast chest CT (NCCT) imaging, predicts the development of CVAE in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with CRT.
METHODS: Patients with NSCLC treated with CRT at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 7/2009 until 4/2014 and who had at least one NCCT scan within 6 months from their first CRT were identified. CAC scoring was performed …

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic element that can accumulate in edible plant tissues and negatively impact human health. Traditional Cd quantification methods are time-consuming, expensive, and generate a lot of toxic waste, slowing development of methods to reduce uptake. The objective of this study was to determine whether hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and machine learning (ML) can be used to predict Cd concentrations in plants using kale (Brassica oleracea) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) as model crops. The experiments were conducted in an automated phenotyping facility where all environmental conditions except soil Cd concentration were kept constant. …
Subsidiarity & Vulnerability Theory: A Case Study For Deepening The Relationship Between Catholic Social Teaching And The Responsive State, Nathaniel Romano
Subsidiarity & Vulnerability Theory: A Case Study For Deepening The Relationship Between Catholic Social Teaching And The Responsive State, Nathaniel Romano
Catholic University Law Review
Religion and religious voices have long had a role to play in shaping community norms and values and public policy; this role continues in contemporary America. Yet, legitimate questions arise about the extent of this role and its place in a pluralist and democratic state. These questions are particularly pronounced when religion is perceived as partisan, a situation that seems apparent in contemporary America. Hoping to combat this perception, this paper explores the relationship between Catholic Social Teaching and Vulnerability Theory, aiming to show how religious values can inform legal theory across the political spectrum. This paper surveys both Catholic …

Introduction With the ratification of the Sustainable Development Goals, there is an increased emphasis on early childhood development (ECD) and well-being. The WHO led Global Scales for Early Development (GSED) project aims to provide population and programmatic level measures of ECD for 0–3 years that are valid, reliable and have psychometrically stable performance across geographical, cultural and language contexts. This paper reports on the creation of two measures: (1) the GSED Short Form (GSED-SF)— a caregiver reported measure for population-evaluation— self-administered with no training required and (2) the GSED Long Form (GSED-LF)— a directly administered/observed measure for programmatic evaluation—administered by …
Stabilization Of Zero-Energy Skin Modes In Finite Non-Hermitian Lattices, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani
Stabilization Of Zero-Energy Skin Modes In Finite Non-Hermitian Lattices, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The zero energy of a one-dimensional semi-infinite non-Hermitian lattice with nontrivial spectral topology may disappear when we introduce boundaries to the system. While the corresponding zero-energy state can be considered as a quasi-edge state for the finite lattice with a long survival time, any small disruption (noise) in the initial form of the quasi-edge state can significantly shorten the survival time. Here, by tailoring the couplings at one edge we form an exceptional point allowing for a topological phase transition and the stabilization of the quasi-edge state in a finite-size lattice with open edges. Such a small modification in the …

Objectives: The FDI criteria for the evaluation of direct and indirect dental restorations were first published in 2007 and updated in 2010. Meanwhile, their scientific use increased steadily, but several questions from users justified some clarification and improvement of the living document. Materials and methods: An expert panel (N = 10) initiated the revision and consensus process that included a kick-off workshop and multiple online meetings by using the Delphi method. During and after each round of discussion, all opinions were collected, and the aggregated summary was presented to the experts aiming to adjust the wording of the criteria as …

Descriptive Dna Barcoding Of Argas (Persicargas) Arboreus And Argas (Persicargas) Persicus Ticks (Ixodida: Argasidae) Infesting Birds In Egypt, Enas H. Ghallab, Ayat Yousery, Mona G. Shaalan
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Argas ticks are primary parasites of birds with veterinary importance. Nevertheless, these ticks have received little attention regarding molecular identification studies. DNA barcoding is a powerful technique for identifying tick species besides traditional morphological identification. The present work is a first effort to divulge DNA sequences of Argas (Persicargas) arboreus from Egypt and worldwide. We used cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) from A. arboreus infesting herons, and from the fowl tick Argas (Persicargas) persicus. Our results pointed out another success for the Folmer primers that are widely used in DNA barcoding, permitting the discrimination …

Addressing The Stigma Associated With Antiquated Blood Donation Policies And Donor Eligibility For Msm, Jay S. Pickern, Helena R. Costakis
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
The crises of blood product shortages pose real health risks and threats to the greater population in the United States (U.S.). Current U.S. blood donation policies continue to restrict or limit donations from willing and healthy individuals on the basis of sex, classified as men who have sex with men (MSM). This essay explores the historical progression of the current blood donation policy through the lens of enacted stigmatization and stigma consciousness for MSM, identifies implications of the current policy, explores the impact of the current policy and proposed changes, and calls for action to modernize the current blood donation …

Facilitating Employee Recovery From Work: The Role Of Leader‑Member‑Exchange, Judith Volmer, Eva-Maria Schulte, Charlotte Fritz
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Building on Affective Events Theory (AET), this study examined within-person relationships between employee perceptions of day-level leader-member exchange (LMX) and day-level positive affect as well as between positive affect and recovery from work in the evening (i.e., relaxation, mastery, control, and psychological detachment from work). In addition, LMX variability was examined as a moderator of these within-person relationships. Employees (N = 160) completed surveys at the end of the workday and in the evening across five consecutive workdays. Results indicate direct relationships between perceptions of LMX and employee positive affect at work. In addition, positive affect was positively associated …

Racial Disparities In Physician And Non-Physician Health Professionals: Investigating Barriers For Pre-Professional Students, Emily Remer
Honors Projects
“Diversity” is a buzzword across today’s educational, professional, and office settings. With so many looking to “diversify” their fields, it is important to note the endless ways in which people are diverse. From culture to religion to age to gender to race, and the intersectionality of them all, there has been a push to increase diversity as a means to better serve individuals in minority groups. While all forms of diversity are important, as is their intersectionality, the purpose of this project is to focus on racial disparities. There is no question that racial disparities exist across many roles we …

On A Guiding Of Whistler-Mode Waves By Density Gradients, Anatoly V. Streltsov
On A Guiding Of Whistler-Mode Waves By Density Gradients, Anatoly V. Streltsov
Publications
Observations from satellites demonstrate that in the magnetosphere, VLF whistler-mode waves are frequently detected in the narrow transition regions, where the plasma density changes its magnitude over a short distance across the ambient magnetic field. These observations suggest that the small-scale, isolated density gradients can guide the VLF whistler-mode waves along the field. We investigate the guiding of the whistler-mode waves by the transverse density gradients with a size much less than the characteristic perpendicular size of the wave. We found analytical solutions describing these waves in the plasma with a sharp density discontinuity between two homogeneous regions, and confirm …

Well cave is a small cave entrance that sits northeast of Bracken Bat Cave on the Bracken Bat Cave Preserve Property. The cave entrance sits above the Balcones Fault Zone, a primarily karst environment, and is mostly comprised of Edwards Limestone (EAA, 2022). The goal of this project is to successfully detect the main cave passageway, and any other potential paths that branch from it, beneath Well Cave. In order to accurately detect any passages, GPR surveying and ER testing were chosen as the main methods to do so.
