Legal Reform To Enhance Global Text And Data Mining Research, Sean Flynn Dec 2022

Legal Reform To Enhance Global Text And Data Mining Research, Sean Flynn

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

Text and data mining (TDM) research involves the process of collecting vast amounts of digitized material and using software to analyze and extract information from such information. TDM is a crucial first step to addressing some of the world’s greatest scientific and societal challenges. But, as we show in this article, a patchwork of copyright laws across jurisdictions limits where and how TDM research can occur. We discuss how the World Intellectual Property Organization and legislatures around the world can promote harmonization of copyright exceptions for various research uses. Addressing research uses, including for TDM, in copyright reform can help …

Contributing Factors And Solutions For Inappropriate Use Of The Emergency Department, Lesia M. Kozych Dec 2022

Contributing Factors And Solutions For Inappropriate Use Of The Emergency Department, Lesia M. Kozych

Honors Capstones

Emergency departments are overwhelmed with the sheer quantity of patients, many of which are there for the non-emergent reasons. The purpose of this project is to identify factors that contribute to emergency department (ED) misuse, initiatives or programs that have been successful in decreasing ED misuse, and ED personnel’s opinions on contributing factors and potential solutions. A literature review followed by semi-structured interviews of ED personnel produced the necessary information. Common themes were drawn from participant responses in the interview portion. A major barrier to appropriate use of the emergency department is access to primary care. Others include: lack of …

Salary History And Employer Demand: Evidence From A Two-Sided Audit, Amanda Agan, Bo Cowgill, Laura K. Gee Dec 2022

Salary History And Employer Demand: Evidence From A Two-Sided Audit, Amanda Agan, Bo Cowgill, Laura K. Gee

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We study how salary disclosures affect employer demand using a field experiment featuring hundreds of recruiters evaluating over 2,000 job applications. We randomize the presence of salary questions and the candidates’ disclosures for male and female applicants. Our findings suggest that extra dollars disclosed yield higher salary offers, willingness to pay, and perceptions of outside options by recruiters (all similarly for men and women). Recruiters make negative inferences about the quality and bargaining positions of non-disclosing candidates, though they penalize silent women less.

Promoting Sleep To Decrease Delirium, Stephanie Mayne Dec 2022

Promoting Sleep To Decrease Delirium, Stephanie Mayne

MSN Capstone Projects

Delirium is potent risk factor for complications, an increase length of stay, and mortality. Hospital acquired delirium is a prevalent and serious health condition that can occur in patients, especially the older adult population, when admitted to the hospital. It has the ability to be prevented if properly addressed and interventions are set in place to help reduce the occurrence of hospital acquired delirium. Many factors can contribute to the development of delirium, including a disruption of one’s circadian rhythm. Sleep is not always a high priority in the hospital, therefore there are little interventions and goals aimed at improving …

Regional Anesthesia In Outpatient Total Joint Arthroplasty, Laci Caesar Dec 2022

Regional Anesthesia In Outpatient Total Joint Arthroplasty, Laci Caesar

MSN Capstone Projects

Within the past five years, outpatient total joint arthroplasties have increased three-fold due to the change in insurance companies’ reimbursement plans. After continuous literature research collection, support for spinal anesthesia was higher than compared to general anesthesia (GA) for outpatient total joint arthroplasty procedures. Healthy patient who receives regional anesthesia showed decreased post-operative pain, increased rehabilitation, and, most of all, a decrease in facility stays (Macfarlane et al., 2009). This has allowed healthy patients who meet physician, anesthesia, and facility requirements to transition from hospitals to ambulatory surgery centers for total joint replacement procedures. With this new transition comes change …

Photo-Crosslinkable And Ultrastable Poly(1,4-Butadiene) Based Organogel With Record-High Reversible Elongation Upon Cooling And Contraction Upon Heating, Xiaming Feng, Guoqiang Li

Faculty Publications

Two-way shape memory polymers with reversible elongation upon cooling (EUC) and contraction upon heating (CUH) have emerged as promising smart materials for use in soft actuators. However, it remains challenging to develop organogels with as high as possible actuation strain. Here, novel photo-crosslinkable poly(1,4-butadiene) (PBD) based organogels with exceptional stability and high reversible EUC and CUH have been developed for the first time. The conventional photo-initiator 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone and plasticizer bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate were utilized to achieve photo-crosslinking ability and to serve as the organic free phase, respectively. Owing to the stability of the plasticizer, the PBD based organogels are pretty stable …

Exploring Sleep Knowledge And Predictors Of Sleep Hygiene In College Students, Mirielle Erpelding Dec 2022

Exploring Sleep Knowledge And Predictors Of Sleep Hygiene In College Students, Mirielle Erpelding

Honors College Theses

Sleep: something so crucial to successful daily functioning, yet also something so easily discarded in turn for something more stimulating. In college, there are late nights, early mornings, use of electronic devices, and the constant “always-on” mentality, all of which impacts student sleep hygiene. To define, the American Academy for Sleep Medicine (AASM) considers “sleep hygiene” as a pattern of healthy sleep behaviors that improve one’s ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and awake more refreshed (2020). The current study has two goals: 1) assess knowledge of recommended sleep practices in the college population, and 2) identify predictors (among sleep …

An Empirical Study On The Classification Of Python Language Features Using Eye-Tracking, Jigyasa Chauhan Dec 2022

An Empirical Study On The Classification Of Python Language Features Using Eye-Tracking, Jigyasa Chauhan

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Python, currently one of the most popular programming languages, is an object-
oriented language that also provides language feature support for other programming
paradigms, such as functional and procedural. It is not currently understood how
support for multiple paradigms affects the ability of developers to comprehend that
code. Understanding the predominant paradigm in code, and how developers classify
the predominant paradigm, can benefit future research in program comprehension as
the paradigm may factor into how people comprehend that code. Other researchers
may want to look at how the paradigms in the code interact with various code smells.
To investigate how …

Programming The Properties Of Branched Polymers Through Precision Architectures, Michael R. Dearman Dec 2022

Programming The Properties Of Branched Polymers Through Precision Architectures, Michael R. Dearman

LSU Master's Theses

The glass transition of branched polymers is determined by multiple structural parameters that dictate their inter- and intramolecular interactions, and ultimately, their molecular packing in the amorphous phase. Here we examined the impact of side chain length, backbone length, molecular weight composition, and topology on the glass transition behavior of bottlebrush polymers. Through examining precision bottlebrush polymer libraries (PBP, ĐSC = 1.0), we find the infinite molecular weight Tg is reached at a specific brush length after which the effect of the side-chain length dominates. Being a factor more dominant than the backbone, side-chain length affects the Tg of bottlebrush …

Pollination Ecology Of Island Endemic Plants: A Case Study On The California Channel Islands, C. Sheena Sidhu, Giselle E. Lozano, Michelle C. Miner, Emily Howe, Erin E. Wilson-Rankin Dec 2022

Pollination Ecology Of Island Endemic Plants: A Case Study On The California Channel Islands, C. Sheena Sidhu, Giselle E. Lozano, Michelle C. Miner, Emily Howe, Erin E. Wilson-Rankin

Western North American Naturalist

Understanding the pollination requirements of threatened species is critical for the success of long-term conservation strategies. In a series of greenhouse experiments, we assessed the effects of different pollination treatments, including autogamy, facilitated autogamy, and cross-pollination on fruit and seed set for 2 generations of a rare island endemic plant. Santa Cruz Island rockcress, Sibara filifolia (Brassicaceae), is a rare, endangered annual herb that is endemic to the California Channel Islands. While efforts are underway to monitor and conserve this rare plant species, little is known about its pollination biology. We quantified the index of self-compatibility and multiplicative fitness. We …
