A Hierarchy Of Sovereigns Through The Limitation Of Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction, Walter W. Harding Jr. Dec 2022

A Hierarchy Of Sovereigns Through The Limitation Of Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction, Walter W. Harding Jr.

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Tribal criminal jurisdiction has been limited by the enactment of the Indian Bill of Rights and acts that give states criminal jurisdiction over tribal lands instead of allowing tribal nations to self-govern criminal acts that occur on their lands. Additionally, Congress has used its plenary power to erode the tribal criminal jurisdiction. The United States Constitution recognizes three sovereigns: States, Foreign Nations, and Tribal Nations. This erosion, along with United States Supreme Court decisions, created a hierarchical class of sovereignty in the sovereigns recognized by the United States Constitution, with tribal nations occupying the lowest position on this hierarchy. In …

Water Management And Corrosion Performance From Protective Polymer Coatings With Spatially Controlled Hydrophilic Domains, Jessica M. Davison Dec 2022

Water Management And Corrosion Performance From Protective Polymer Coatings With Spatially Controlled Hydrophilic Domains, Jessica M. Davison

Dissertations

Metallic corrosion has become an annual multibillion-dollar problem for the industrialized world and global contamination issue through the process of repair, removing, and reapplying protective coatings. Typical corrosion resistant coatings are comprised of polymeric coating layers with anti-corrosive pigments, plasticizers, sacrificial additives, and/or other formulation materials, which are formulated to prevent, detect, and manage corrosion. Our counterintuitive approach was to improve upon the understanding of how, when, where, and why environmental contaminants (reactants, mainly water and electrolytes) driving corrosion, propagate and accumulate as localized hydrophilicity shifts within a model polymer coated substrate. Herein, hydrogel particles (HGP) were synthesized of defines …

Commodifying Captivity: What Society Loses When Private Companies Do The Government's Bidding, Brianna Weiner Dec 2022

Commodifying Captivity: What Society Loses When Private Companies Do The Government's Bidding, Brianna Weiner

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

This paper discusses the societal impact of permitting private, for-profit entities to take on the government’s function of imposing and regulating punishment. Traditionally, the People choose local and government actors to punish others. The imposition of punishment by private, for-profit companies destroys the established pattern of community involvement and control. Communities have no control over which private companies are used, have little ability to oversee company functions, and have no voice in the process of holding private companies accountable. Additionally, when punishment is privatized, the offender does not feel the community’s condemnation. Instead of society benefiting from the swift hand …

Honey Bee Nutrition Through The Ages, Kaitlyn Bresnaham Dec 2022

Honey Bee Nutrition Through The Ages, Kaitlyn Bresnaham

Biology Student Scholarship

Honey bee nutrition can tell us a lot about the state of the hive. It is known that summer worker bees and winter worker bees have different protein and carbon content, but not much research has been done on nutritional content throughout the life history stages of honey bees. I am examining differences in carbon and nitrogen content in the bees for the three different castes at various life stages. The results could allow for more efficient planting of pollinator friendly plants based on the nutritional needs of the colony, or could affect how beekeepers do supplemental feedings when necessary. …

What Does Leadership Expect From Me? Interpreting Leadership Through Meaning, Love, And Power, Courtney Yezerski Dec 2022

What Does Leadership Expect From Me? Interpreting Leadership Through Meaning, Love, And Power, Courtney Yezerski

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

This essay aims to make the case that our dominant concepts of leadership are constraining, thus prohibiting us from meeting the higher meanings residing within leadership, namely love. Blinded by our “existential frustration” (Frankl, 2014, p. 71), we have existed within conceptual notions of leadership that contend for mediocrity and production rather than beauty, goodness, and love (hooks, 2001). The origins of leadership implore humanity to a new paradigm that seeks beauty, even where none is intended (Bolz-Weber, 2022), and takes others along. By examining the etymology of leadership and applying Viktor Frankl's (2006) concept of will to meaning as …

Leaning Away To Lean In: Aspirations Of Servant-Leadership Through The Tenets Of Giving Things Up, Listening, And Silence, Evan Wildstein Dec 2022

Leaning Away To Lean In: Aspirations Of Servant-Leadership Through The Tenets Of Giving Things Up, Listening, And Silence, Evan Wildstein

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Frick (2011) inspires reflection when he notes, “We tend to believe that we must do something to solve a problem.” This is a powerful notion seen through the lens of modern life. Organizational life, especially, is full of action. Whether or not certain actions should be taken is largely a consideration of oughtness, though many believe as Frick suggests — that we feel we must do something. This belief has limitations, which we are wont to learn if we are receptive, irrespective of where we might be in our lives. While this may seem counterintuitive, leaning away from action to …

Exploring The Role Of Dieting Style In Nutritional And Psychological Health Among College Women, Hayley L. Vanderjagt Dec 2022

Exploring The Role Of Dieting Style In Nutritional And Psychological Health Among College Women, Hayley L. Vanderjagt

Psychology ETDs

The current study aimed to profile styles of eating among dieting and non-dieting college-aged women, and to explore the extent to which dieting attitudes were associated with both nutritionally healthy eating and psychological well-being. A latent profile analysis was conducted using indicators of self-reported intuitive eating, binge eating, and two psychometric measures of dietary restraint; various measures of eating restraint were utilized to potentially capture distinct characteristics of dieting, such as self-discipline and disinhibition (Polivy et al., 2020; Stice et al., 2010). Four distinct probabilistic profiles emerged, indicating that individuals within the study population could be meaningfully categorized as Intuitive …

Sexual Abuse Of Female Inmates In Federal Prisons, Brenda Smith Dec 2022

Sexual Abuse Of Female Inmates In Federal Prisons, Brenda Smith

Legislative Testimony & Comments

This Article discusses the modest aspirations of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (“PREA”) that passed unanimously in the United States Congress in 2003. The Article posits that PREA created opportunities for holding correctional authorities accountable by creating a baseline for safety and setting more transparent expectations for agencies’ practices for protecting prisoners from sexual abuse. Additionally, the Article posits that PREA enhanced the evolving standards of decency for the Eighth Amendment and articulated clear expectations of correctional authorities to provide sexual safety for people in custody.

Recall Of Vocabulary From A Second Language: Picture Naming Vs. Word Definition, Huda I. Albalawi, Sumyah A. Alnajashi Dec 2022

Recall Of Vocabulary From A Second Language: Picture Naming Vs. Word Definition, Huda I. Albalawi, Sumyah A. Alnajashi

Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies

The present study investigated the differences between early and late-acquired words from a second language in terms of the method of recall, speed and accuracy. This involved comparing the performance of 24 native Arabic participants on two different recall methods: picture naming vs. word definition. Each participant attended two sessions, with a 24-hour interval: a learning session, in which they learned new words, and a retrieval session, in which they performed the picture-naming and word-definition tasks while their ERP signals were recorded. The main results showed a significant main effect of age of acquisition on both accuracy and reaction time. …

The Follower As Servant, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan Dec 2022

The Follower As Servant, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word leader? I imagine it conjures images of power and influence. Some think of wealth and status. Some think of specific individuals who represent leadership to them. Often leaders are thought of in very positive ways. Some might even say mythical ways (Bennis, 1999). Everyone wants to be thought of as a leader. In fact, research suggests most people do think of themselves as leaders (Laurent, 1978). Parents want their children to be leaders, not followers. Indeed, when someone says that one is a follower, it is …

Reaching Servant-Leadership Through The Journey Of Forgiveness, Kathryn Acorda Harlan Dec 2022

Reaching Servant-Leadership Through The Journey Of Forgiveness, Kathryn Acorda Harlan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I was introduced to the true magnitude of forgiveness through a leadership course at Gonzaga University in the early summer of 2021. The basic definition and meaning of forgiveness was evident. However, understanding the value of forgiveness, as a recipient and giver was a new endeavor. We are introduced to forgiveness as early as preschool. However, to truly understand, recognize and practice forgiveness is a lifelong lesson and journey. Forgiveness is a process. Since this course at Gonzaga University, I have continued to research forgiveness and how it relates to human interaction, our physical and emotional health and how it …

The Relationship Between Servant-Leadership And Employee Resilience, Aaron D. Wilkinson, Mark Rennaker Dec 2022

The Relationship Between Servant-Leadership And Employee Resilience, Aaron D. Wilkinson, Mark Rennaker

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Liu et al. (2019) wrote, “resilience has become increasingly important for individuals, organizations and society to flourish in the uncertain, risky, turbulent and ambiguous world we live in today.” Resilience enhances the functioning of individuals, teams, and organizations (Britt et al., 2016). Workplace stressors lead to outcomes antithetical to resilience, such as burnout (Lee & Ashforth, 1996), poor physical and mental health (Beasley et al., 2003; Holden et al., 2010), absenteeism (Väänänen et al., 2003), intention to turnover (Chiu et al., 2009; Deery et al., 2010), anxiety, and depression (Melchior et al., 2007). In contrast, Robertson et al.’s (2015) review …

Department of Medical Oncology Posters

Introduction

  • Nearly half of the patients diagnosed with breast cancer are ≥ 65 years.
  • Older patients with breast cancer are at higher risk for experiencing treatment side effects and unplanned health care.
  • This can compromise treatment outcomes and increase the cost of care.
  • The G8 is among the most sensitive screening tools for frailty and mortality.
  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of the G8 questionnaire with treatment side effects and unscheduled care in older breast cancer women.
