Effect Of X-Ray Illumination On Magnetic Domain Memory In [Co/Pd]/Irmn Multilayers, Colby Singint Walker Dec 2022

Effect Of X-Ray Illumination On Magnetic Domain Memory In [Co/Pd]/Irmn Multilayers, Colby Singint Walker

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on investigating the possible x-ray illumination effects on the magnetic domain memory (MDM) in magnetic [Co/Pd]IrMn multilayers. In this material, MDM is induced via exchange couplings between the ferromagnetic Co/Pd layer and the antiferromagnetic IrMn layer. To carry out this investigation, we have used magneto-transport and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. The use of magneto-transport in-situ at synchrotron x-ray scattering facility has allowed us to follow the gradual effect of x-ray illumination on the amount of exchange bias, initially present after field cooling the material. With our in-situ measurements we have been able to see that x-ray illumination …

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are bursts of electromagnetic energy that are released when supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies violently disrupt a star that passes too close1. TDEs provide a window through which to study accretion onto supermassive black holes; in some rare cases, this accretion leads to launching of a relativistic jet2–9, but the necessary conditions are not fully understood. The best-studied jetted TDE so far is Swift J1644+57, which was discovered in γ-rays, but was too obscured by dust to be seen at optical wavelengths. Here we report the optical detection of …

Student Perceptions In Conferring: A Phenomenographic Exploration Of Student Perceptions On Teacher-Student Writing Conferences, Jacqueline Johnson

Doctor of Education in Secondary and Middle Grades Education Dissertations

This phenomenographic research explores how students perceive one-on-one (teacher-student) writing conferences. At least twice a year, I sit with my 9th-grade English students to discuss their writing. Together, we go over their last writing assignment. I coach them to make their writing better while pointing out positive elements of their writing. I check for understanding by having the students verbally repeat a summary of their conference. While I feel connected to the students and their writing by conferring, I have rarely considered what they thought about the conference. After our conference, do they feel like they truly learned something? I …

System Shock: Using -Omics Data To Characterize Biological Remodeling In The Microbiome, Resistome, And Transcriptome Of Bacteria, Winston Eugene Anthony

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The human experience is indelibly linked to microbial life. So much so, that the holobiont theory has been coined to define the assemblage of host and microbe as a discrete ecological unit. Perturbation of the commensal microbiome can create niche space for pathogens, which through the concomitant rise of antimicrobial resistance represent an ever-evolving danger. In Chapter 2 of this dissertation, I describe the results of an interventional study designed to directly perturb the healthy gut microbiome and observe the dynamics of taxonomic composition and functional recovery. I observe significant decreases after 5 days of antibiotic treatment in the gold …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The survival of a species is inextricably linked to its ability to successfully navigate and interact with its surroundings, whether to seek safety from predators or gain sustenance from prey. Both functions are performed by mice, guided by vision, and rely on intricate processing in the retina and subcortical targets in the brain. This dissertation addresses how specific features of the visual environment and specific retinal ganglion cell circuits that sample a particular space in the visual environment are used to guide efficient predation in mice.Recent studies have begun to link the ability to detect, track, and ultimately capture prey …

Insights Into The Non-Osmoregulatory Function Of A Pollen-Specific Mechanosensitive Ion Channel, Kari Miller Dec 2022

Insights Into The Non-Osmoregulatory Function Of A Pollen-Specific Mechanosensitive Ion Channel, Kari Miller

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Pollen, the male gametophyte of flowering plants, delivers the sperm cells to the ovule to carry out sexual reproduction. During this process, the pollen grain undergoes dramatic physical changes. Survival requires careful control of cell mechanics, particularly the balance between protoplast expansion and cell wall resistance. One control mechanism is the use of a mechanosensitive (MS) ion channel, MscS-Like (MSL)8. This pollen-specific protein was previously shown to be essential for pollen survival during hydration and was proposed to function as a tension-gated osmoregulator. However, direct proof of osmoregulation during initial hydration has not yet been found. In fact, studies of …

Emerging Insights Into A Role For Topoisomerase Iib And Methyl-Cpg Binding Protein 2 In Regulating Neuronal Transcription, Sabin Nettles

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The mammalian brain has unparalleled diversity of cell types with distinct molecular, morphological, connectional and functional properties. The specialization of these cells occurs during development through a series of spatially and temporally controlled changes in gene expression that are critical for proper assembly and function. Neurons in particular have complex and elaborate gene regulatory systems which allow specific combinations of genes to be expressed at distinct levels and at discrete developmental stages, giving rise to heterogenous neuronal subtypes. Identifying unique neuronal gene regulatory factors that contribute to the dynamic changes in gene expression are critical to understanding the molecular mechanism …

Synthesis And Application Of Functional Unimolecular [N]Catenanes In Novel Polymeric Materials, Mark Andrew Nosiglia

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) possess unique architectures and non-traditional degrees of freedom that arise from well-defined topologies that are achieved through precise mechanical bonding. Incorporation of MIMs into materials can thus provide an avenue to discover new and emergent macroscale properties. Here, the synthesis of a phenanthroline-based [2]catenane crosslinker and its incorporation into polyacrylate organogels is described. Specifically, Cu(I) metalation and de-metalation was used as a post-gelation strategy to tune the mechanical properties of a gel by controlling the conformational motions of integrated MIMs. The organogels were prepared via thermally initiated free radical polymerization, and Cu(I) metal was added in …

Review Of The Physical And Chemical Properties Of Seagrass Soils, Nerea Piñeiro-Juncal, Oscar Serrano, Miguel Ángel Mateo, Elena Diaz-Almela, Carmen Leiva-Dueñas, Antonio Martinez-Cortizas

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Seagrasses are a polyphyletic group of angiosperms that colonized marine environments more than 30 million years ago and currently inhabit coastal soft and rocky substrates in all continents except Antarctica. Due to their evolution from terrestrial plants, seagrasses have belowground organs that interact with the substrate, transforming it through chemo-physical processes analogous to terrestrial soil formation. Although seagrass substrates provide valuable ecosystem services including carbon and coastal stabilization, they have been largely regarded as sediments by marine scientists and neglected in soil science research. However, over the last decades, the increasing interest in carbon accumulation by seagrasses has generated multiple …
