Background/aim: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of fulvestrant and its affecting clinical factors, including the optimal sequencing of fulvestrant and chemotherapy in a real-life cohort. Methods: The data of 256 metastatic hormone-positive breast cancer patients treated with fulvestrant were evaluated. The association of clinical factors with survival was analyzed with Kaplan-Meier and Cox-regression analyses. Results: The median age of patients was 57 years. More than half of the patients used fulvestrant in later lines and after chemotherapy (75.8%). The median progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of all cohort were 6.05 ± 0.56 and 29.70 ± 1.61 months, respectively. …

Background/aim: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood, is diagnosed clinically by assessing the symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Also, there are limited objective assessment tools to support the diagnosis. Thus, in this study, a new electrooculography (EOG) based on visual stimulus tracking to support the diagnosis of ADHD was proposed. Materials and methods: Reference stimulus one-to-one tracking numbers (RSOT) and colour game detection (CGD) were applied to 53 medication-free children with ADHD and 36 healthy controls (HCs). Also, the test was applied six months after the treatment to children with ADHD. …

Determination Of Plant-Specific Retrotransposons In Chicken, Levent Mercan, Ci̇hat Erdem Bülbül, Fati̇h Bi̇lgi̇, Sevgi̇ Marakli
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Mobile genetic elements are also known as transposons, comprising a significant proportion of plant and animal genomes. Retrotransposons, a class of transposons, move copy and paste mechanism and, therefore, cause genome obesity. Moreover, the transferability of retrotransposons within and between different kingdoms has provided valuable information for evolutionary relationships in addition to detailed knowledge about genomes. We identified barley-specific retrotransposons (Nikita and Sukkula) and determined polymorphism ratios of these retrotransposons in a chicken genome for the first time to gain new insights for retrotransposons found in different genomes. Transposon sequences belonging to chicken and barley genomes were also investigated to …

Anthrax, which is primarily a disease of herbivores, is known to infect many animal species. In order to break the cycle of anthrax infection, it is important to identify the potential hosts or reservoirs of its causative agent. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize Bacillus anthracis isolates recovered from a variety of hosts and environments during anthrax sporadic in the Kars and Kayseri regions of Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 23 B. anthracis field isolates obtained from human, cattle, sheep, dog, horse, puma, soil, and fodder were used. In addition, the Sterne vaccine strain was included. Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Gamithromycin and tulathromycin are commonly used in the treatment of bovine respiratory bacterial diseases. The current work was undertaken to establish the apoptotic, necrotic, and cytotoxic effects of these antibiotics in the target animal. Cells with apoptosis and necrosis were determined by dual staining method, cytotoxic effects were determined by MTT assay, cell proliferative effects were examined by XCelligence real-time cell analysis system (RTCA-SP). The comparison between gamithromycin and tulathromycin concentrations on tracheal cells in terms of % cell viability was found to be significantly different. While the cell viability percentage of gamithromycin was higher at 150 μg/mL, 180 μg/mL, …

The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of genotype, age, stocking density, and cage tier on the feather score of egg-laying pure lines. The trial was carried out with five white (BLACK, BLUE, MARON, BROWN, and D229) and six brown (RIR1, RIR2, BAR1, BAR2, COL, and LINE54) eggshell lines as classified by the Ankara poultry research institute. In the experiment, 162 chicks were randomly selected from each of the 11 lines; thus, a total of 1782 chicks (810 and 972 white and brown layer pure lines, respectively). At 17 weeks of age, pullets were chosen at random …

A Game Theoretic Approach To Design Mating Programs For Livestock, Ebru Ergüneş Berki̇n, Hasan Önder, Özgür Hakan Aydoğmuş

In this study, we proposed a new game theoretic method to design a mating program. The index and game theoretic methods were applied with calculated breeding values using pedigree on two different data sets whose economic traits consist of negative (milk yield and fat percentage) and positive (birth and weaning weight) genetic correlated data. For the negative genetic correlated data set, even if total expected benefits were equal for two methods, mating programs were changed, and the coefficient of variation obtained using the game theoretic method was smaller than that of the index method. This result showed that the expected …

Effects Of Centrifugation And Washing Of Freeze-Thawed Blood On Isolated Dna Characteristics, Mevlüt Arslan
Effects Of Centrifugation And Washing Of Freeze-Thawed Blood On Isolated Dna Characteristics, Mevlüt Arslan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
DNA isolations from the whole blood are commonly performed to obtain DNA for molecular research and diagnostics. Generally, blood samples are taken into anticoagulant tubes and stored in deep freezers until DNA isolation. In fresh blood, pretreatments or leukocytes preparations can be performed and suggested for advanced DNA isolation. However, similar applications in freeze-thawed blood (FTB) have not been shown yet. In the study, centrifugation and washing of FTB were applied as pretreatment before DNA isolations, and their effects on isolated DNA characteristics including DNA integrity, quality, quantity, mitochondrial (mt), and nuclear (n) DNA levels were investigated. Microscopic and flow …

Background/aim: We aimed to discuss term infants who are given surfactant due to respiratory disorder according to the underlying etiology, the dose of surfactant administration, and the need for repeated surfactant administration. Materials and methods: In this retrospective study infants hospitalized in the 4th level neonatal intensive care unit during January 2019 and December 2021 and administered surfactant due to respiratory distress were included. Term infants given surfactant due to respiratory failure were included in the study through the data recording system. The number of surfactant doses, indications for administration, mortality, duration of hospitalization, intubation time, and inotrope use were …
Estimation Of The Factors Affecting Lactation Milk Yield Of Holstein Cattle By The Adaptiveneuro-Fuzzy Inference System, Aycan Mutlu Yağanoğlu
Estimation Of The Factors Affecting Lactation Milk Yield Of Holstein Cattle By The Adaptiveneuro-Fuzzy Inference System, Aycan Mutlu Yağanoğlu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study is to estimate lactation milk yield of Holstein cattle using first calving age, lactation period, and service period with (ANFIS) adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. The input variables for the system in the study were first calving age, lactation period, and service period. The output variable from the system was lactation milk yield. Predicted values obtained from the ANFIS were compared with the observed values. Twenty-seven rule functions are used to obtain the best model and 1000 epochs are used to estimate the accuracy of the training and testing error. The relations between the output and …

Background/aim: Infertility is a global problem that brings about serious sexual and social consequences that strain the health sector and society. The expansion of CAG and GGC repeats in androgen receptor (AR) gene (Ensembl number ENSG00000169083) may lead to reduced fertility. Our objective was to determine the association of CAG and GGC repeats with altered sperm parameters in male infertile subjects. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 376 males were recruited, out of which group A (N = 208) and group B (N = 168) were comprised of …
