Perceptions Of Coding Instruction In K-12 Archdiocese Of Los Angeles Catholic Schools, Krikor Koko Kiladjian
Perceptions Of Coding Instruction In K-12 Archdiocese Of Los Angeles Catholic Schools, Krikor Koko Kiladjian
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Traditional pedagogy offers students opportunities to enhance various skills and acquire content knowledge; however, additional steps can be taken to enhance student achievement, prepare them for future occupations, and bridge the divide in access to technology. A curriculum that integrates coding instruction affords students the opportunity to augment their collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills. This is especially crucial for traditionally marginalized populations who have experienced inequitable access to technology. Nevertheless, coding is not integrated in schools in different domains, including Catholic institutions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (ADLA).
This dissertation used a descriptive and inferential quantitative methodology …

Time is perceived to be unidirectional and continuous in the philosophy of science. This continuity can play a crucial role in time series analysis as events are generally seen as an outcome of the past, or subject to events that occurred previously in time. In this study, we describe an ordinal approach to perceiving ecological time series – one that relies on pattern formation with both antecedent and future events. Our approach defines a limited set of structural shapes that can occur for past, present, and future time points. Such a library of all possible shapes can then be …

Low-lying coastal cities across the world are vulnerable to the combined impact of rainfall and storm tide. However, existing approaches lack the ability to model the combined effect of these flood mechanisms, especially under climate change and sea level rise (SLR). Thus, to increase flood resilience of coastal cities, modeling techniques to improve the understanding and prediction of the combined effect of these flood hazards are critical. To address this need, this study presents a modeling system for assessing the combined flood impact on coastal cities under selected future climate scenarios that leverages ocean modeling with land surface modeling capable …

The deployment of aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) used for firefighting during emergencies and training often releases per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into the environment. In October 2018, first responders in Providence, RI, USA applied an AFFF during a fuel spill. Due to the proximity of the incident to the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay (NB), an unknown quantity of gasoline and AFFF entered the estuary via surface runoff and stormwater drains. Water samples near the spill were collected approximately 15 h after the incident and analyzed for 24 PFAS. Minor increases in measured PFAS concentrations were observed relative to …

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are continuously released from multiple sources and are prone to long-range transport. Little is known regarding their presence, transport and fate in remote and deep oceans. Polyethylene passive samplers were hence deployed at deep moorings and surface seawater in the Fram Strait and Canadian Archipelago, as well as in air and surface water of the lower Great Lakes, a potential high-emission region, to understand the transport of PAHs to the Arctic. Dissolved PAHs showed significantly higher concentrations in the lower Great Lakes than those in the high Arctic. Concentrations of dissolved PAHs (Σ19PAHs) ranged …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse class of fluorinated anthropogenic chemicals that include perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA), which are widely used in modern commerce. Many products and environmental samples contain abundant precursors that can degrade into terminal PFAA associated with adverse health effects. Fish consumption is an important dietary exposure source for PFAS that bioaccumulate in food webs. However, little is known about bioaccumulation of PFAA precursors. Here, we identify and quantify PFAS in recreational fish species collected from surface waters across New Hampshire, US, using a toolbox of analytical methods. Targeted analysis of paired water and tissue samples …

The correct prediction of the shape and strength of density dependence in productivity is key to predicting future stock development and providing the best possible long-term fisheries management advice. Here, we identify unbiased estimators of the relationship between somatic growth, recruitment and density, and apply these to 80 stocks in the Northeast Atlantic. The analyses revealed density-dependent recruitment in 68% of the stocks. Excluding pelagic stocks exhibiting significant trends in spawning stock biomass, the probability of significant density dependence was even higher at 78%. The relationships demonstrated that at the commonly used biomass limit of 0.2 times maximum spawning stock …

Lophelia pertusa plays an important role as a major contributor to many cold-water coral reefs, supporting a high diversity of associated benthic and benthopelagic species. Due to the high sensitivity of L. pertusa to human activity, it has been classified as indicator species for Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems. However, the global spatial distribution of L. pertusa is far from well known. In this study, a database of L. pertusa presence data was compiled derived from the large number of L. pertusa occurrence records appearing in recent years. In conjunction with data layers covering a range of environmental drivers, habitat suitability for …

The Loop Current Eddy (LCE) separation cycle energizes deep circulation in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, transferring energy from the surface intensified Loop Current (LC) to the typically quiescent lower layers. To document the generation and radiation of deep energy during this cycle, an array of 24 current and pressure recording inverted echo sounders (CPIES) is deployed in the region 89°W to 86°W, 25°N to 27.5°N with the intent to capture circulation near bathymetric features thought to be important for current-topographic interactions: Campeche Bank, Mississippi Fan, and West Florida Shelf. During the nearly two-year deployment, June 2019 to May 2021, …

The Developing Brain: Considering The Multifactorial Effects Of Obesity, Physical Activity & Mental Wellbeing In Childhood And Adolescence, Nicole E. Logan, Christie L. Ward-Ritacco
Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Obesity during childhood has been associated with many important physiological and neurological health considerations. Specifically concerning are the associations between youth obesity and declines in mental health, as shown with increasing rates of adolescent depression and anxiety worldwide. The emergence of mental health disorders commonly arises during adolescent development, and approximately half the global population satisfy the criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder in their lifetime, suggesting a need for early intervention. Adolescence is critical time whereby brain structure and functions are not only negatively associated with obesity and declines in mental health, while also coinciding with significant declines …

Bayesian Methods For The Design And Analysis Of Cluster Randomised Controlled Trials, Benjamin Gary Jones
Bayesian Methods For The Design And Analysis Of Cluster Randomised Controlled Trials, Benjamin Gary Jones
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Cluster Randomised Controlled Trials involve randomising groups of participants, rather than the individual participants themselves, whilst the outcomes are measured on the participants. Whilst there are a number of practical and methodological advantages to such a design, there are also statistical implications, both in terms of study design and sample size calculation, and in analysis. The methodology underpinning the cluster randomised design is now well-established in the statistical literature. However, the overwhelming majority of methodological developments to date have been within the frequentist paradigm, and as such, there is an opportunity to explore methodological developments in the context of Bayesian …
Novel Approaches To Assess Cellular Interactions And Their Role In The Pathology And Treatment Of Lymphoproliferative Disorders, Frances Hilary Rose Frend
Novel Approaches To Assess Cellular Interactions And Their Role In The Pathology And Treatment Of Lymphoproliferative Disorders, Frances Hilary Rose Frend
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Background: Migration and homing are essential to B-lymphocyte mediated immunity, and are driven by rapid, directed, and appropriate reorganisation of the actin cytoskeleton. Important observations have linked the cytoskeletal-rearrangements made by leukaemic B-lymphocytes of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) to disease pathology. In particular, cytoskeletal alterations mediated by B-cell receptor (BCR) engagement or chemokine-binding are recognised to be central to the migration of CLL cells to lymphoid tissues, where they engage in the complex cellular and molecular interactions that underlie their survival, proliferation, and drug resistance. Further emphasising this importance, has been the observation that highly effective small molecule inhibitors that …
Nitrite And Insulin Lower The Oxygen Cost Of Atp Synthesis In Skeletal Muscle Cells By Pleiotropic Stimulation Of Glycolysis, Rosie Donnell
Nitrite And Insulin Lower The Oxygen Cost Of Atp Synthesis In Skeletal Muscle Cells By Pleiotropic Stimulation Of Glycolysis, Rosie Donnell
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Dietary nitrate lowers the oxygen cost of submaximal exercise, but precise mechanistic insight into how this occurs is lacking. Research suggests that dietary nitrate may render oxidative ATP synthesis more efficient, but evidence is inconclusive at present. This thesis aimed to establish how nitrite (a reduced form of nitrate) affects the bioenergetics of cultured skeletal muscle cells. Comparison between the acute effects of nitrite and insulin, a hormonal regulator of muscle function that increases mitochondrial efficiency, was explored to assess possible mechanistic overlap. Calculation of real-time intracellular ATP synthesis rates from simultaneous oxygen consumption and medium acidification measurements revealed the …
Prediction Of Cardiometabolic Risk In Children, Olubukola Ajala
Prediction Of Cardiometabolic Risk In Children, Olubukola Ajala
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Background: Three decades of clinical research have demonstrated that the risks of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD: coronary disease and ischaemic stroke), and the closely related type 2 diabetes (T2D) are established and influenced by events during childhood. This is at least partly because childhood obesity usually leads to adult adiposity; so, the currently high prevalence of adult cardiometabolic disease, means that obesity needs to be identified as early as possible, ideally in childhood. Screening for obesity largely relies on anthropometric measurements like body mass index (BMI), however this has many limitations including its inability to distinguish lean from fat mass. …

Contributions Of Source-Constrained Search And Late Monitoring To Recall Accuracy, James Randle
Other Faculty of Health Theses
This thesis aimed to investigate in detail the processes underlying the control of recall accuracy. It is believed that recall accuracy control comprises processes occurring at memory search and post-retrieval. There is a large body of research concerning post-retrieval monitoring processes; however, less is known about how memory search is constrained and what factors affect this process.Chapter 2 developed and tested a new paradigm for measuring the accuracy of constrained search and monitoring processes simultaneously. Participants were able to selectively retrieve one of two lists irrespective of which list was the target list, indicating successful constrained search. A key role …
Dementia Friendly Flying: Investigating The Accessibility Of Air Travel For People Living With Dementia, Kate Turner
Dementia Friendly Flying: Investigating The Accessibility Of Air Travel For People Living With Dementia, Kate Turner
Other Faculty of Health Theses
A diagnosis of dementia should not mean the end of a person’s ability to participate in meaningful activities. However, accessibility for people living with dementia requires improvement across a range of settings. Anecdotal evidence and critical incident reporting suggests that air travel is not meeting the needs of people with dementia, although evidence-based research into air travel and dementia is extremely limited. This research bridges the gap in the evidence-base on the accessibility of air travel for people living with dementia from within the United Kingdom by: 1) Exploring the experiences of air travel of 10 people living with dementia …

Atrial Fibrillation In Middle-Eastern Arabs And South Asians: Studies From A 20-Year National Registry In Qatar, Amar Mohammad Amin Farhan Salam
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice accounting for approximately one-third of hospitalizations for cardiac rhythm disturbances and is associated with increased risk for stroke, heart failure and death. The epidemiology and clinical features of AF have primarily been characterized in whites of European-descent. The world literature on the epidemiology of AF among different ethnicities is very limited with most of the published reports of AF in non-white ethnicities focusing mainly on black (African-American) patients. The current work represents structured and staged examination of AF in two ethnic groups where very limited literature is available …

A Media Archaeology Of Technologies Of Enchantment, Jane Hutchinson
A Media Archaeology Of Technologies Of Enchantment, Jane Hutchinson
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This thesis explores how an understanding of an immaterial dimension of human experience was expressed and experienced in the context of nineteenth century engagement with science and technology. Drawing upon methods of media archaeology, it presents examples of visual technologies where apparatus and images representative of scientific and technological objectivity appear to have been appropriated and modified for the purpose of experiencing this dimension, an experience this thesis calls enchantment. The thesis suggests that some period specific behaviours associated with these visual technologies are sophisticated and subtle mechanisms that contribute to the affective and cognitive experience of enchantment. The flickering …

This practice-led research follows my exploration of the Sierra Negra astronomical observatories in Mexico, as well as other sites and temporalities where my practice has drifted: it flows from the heights of two volcanos, across Idaho during a total eclipse of the sun, and into the waters of the Usumacinta River. It proposes an ‘earthly’ (Latour 2016) moving image practice that considers the planet as a source of movement, effects and, affects: a vibrant entity that is not seen as static or mechanical, but one that ‘is moved’ (Serres 1995) because it is agitated by the liveness of matter and …

Architectural Design For Dementia: Exploring Alternate Contemporary Cultures Of Residential Care Design, Ricky Burke
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
Architectural Design for Dementia: exploring alternate contemporary cultures of residential care design. The Alzheimer's Association (2018) projected the number of people living with a dementia diagnosis to surpass 2 million, reaching 1 in 37.5 of the population of the United Kingdom by 2051: up from 1 in 79 in 2015. This growth in rate and number coincides with an ageing population and a decline in the relative number of people able to care for the needs of people suffering difficulties associated with the symptoms of their diagnosis. The move to a residential care home is not only a viable but …
