Genome Assembly Of The Chemosynthetic Endosymbiont Of The Hydrothermal Vent Snail Alviniconcha Adamantis From The Mariana Arc, Corrina Breusing, Nathan Hagen Klobusnik, Michelle A. Hauer, Roxanne A. Beinart

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Chemosynthetic animal-microbe symbioses sustain hydrothermal vent communities in the global deep sea. In the Indo-Pacific Ocean, hydrothermal ecosystems are often dominated by gastropod species of the genus Alviniconcha, which live in association with chemosynthetic Gammaproteobacteria or Campylobacteria. While the symbiont genomes of most extant Alviniconcha species have been sequenced, no genome information is currently available for the gammaproteobacterial endosymbiont of Alviniconcha adamantis—a comparatively shallow living species that is thought to be the ancestor to all other present Alviniconcha lineages. Here, we report the first genome sequence for the symbiont of A. adamantis from the Chamorro Seamount at the …

An Emerging Masculinity: A Qualitative Study Of Majority-Status Men's Gender Socialization, Emily Sargent

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Majority-status American men have been found to disproportionately experience suicide, homicide, perpetration of sexual assault and intimate partner violence, as well as, alcohol and drug-related concerns. Current research considers gender socialization of traditional constructs of masculinity to be “toxic” for men and others (i.e., Women, gender and sexual minorities). This study sought to explore young men’s current experience of masculinity identity development in America. Six participants who self-identified as White, straight, English speaking, educated, cisgender, and emerging adult men shared their lived experience of masculinity via virtual video interviews. To assess results of this qualitative study, interpretive phenomenological analysis was …

The Armenian Genocide, Customary International Law, And U.S. Recognition, Jordan Koopmans Jan 2022

The Armenian Genocide, Customary International Law, And U.S. Recognition, Jordan Koopmans

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This article asserts that President Biden's statement recognizing the Armenian Genocide of 1915 illustrates that genocide was prohibited by customary international law when the genocide started. It examines possible legal theories to explain U.S. recognition as well as historical evidence and statements made by other states to establish that there is a strong case for genocide already outlawed by customary international law in 1915. This provides a foundation for the article's assertion and subsequent legal analysis of the United States' statements of recognition under a customary international law theory, concluding that this is the most likely legal theory the U.S. …

Narratives Of Positionality In Primatology: Foreign/Range–Country Collaborator Perspectives From Africa And South America, Michelle A. Rodrigues, Vicent Kiiza, Matthew R. Mclennan, Sérgio L. Mendes, Karen B. Strier Jan 2022

Narratives Of Positionality In Primatology: Foreign/Range–Country Collaborator Perspectives From Africa And South America, Michelle A. Rodrigues, Vicent Kiiza, Matthew R. Mclennan, Sérgio L. Mendes, Karen B. Strier

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Primate research and conservation may inadvertently reproduce neocolonial dynamics when primatologists from affluent, imperialist nations conduct studies in primate habitat countries. Here, we consider how interrogating the positionality of both foreign researchers and range-country collaborators can strengthen primatology. Such consideration may help us to better understand where each member of the collaboration is coming from, both figuratively and literally, and how those situated perceptions shape the research process. Centering the perspectives of the range-country collaborators, whose perspectives are infrequently voiced within the primatology literature, may illuminate challenges in cross-cultural communication and imbalances of knowledge and power. Here, we explore how …

Modeling The Elemental Stoichiometry And Silicon Accumulation In Diatoms, Gabrielle Armin, Keisuke Inomura Jan 2022

Modeling The Elemental Stoichiometry And Silicon Accumulation In Diatoms, Gabrielle Armin, Keisuke Inomura

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Diatoms are important microorganisms involved in global primary production, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration. A unique feature of diatoms is their silica frustules, which impact sinking speed, defense against predators and viruses, and growth cycling. Thus, frustules are inherently linked to their role in ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles. However, constraints on cellular silicon levels remain unclear and few existing models resolve diatom elemental stoichiometry to specifically include variable silicon levels. Here, we use a coarse-grained model of the diatom, Thalassiosira pseudonana, compared with laboratory results to illustrate the relationship of silicon uptake with elemental stoichiometry of other nutrients. The model-data …

Saturating Relationship Between Phytoplankton Growth Rate And Nutrient Concentration Explained By Macromolecular Allocation, Jongsun Kim, Gabrielle Armin, Keisuke Inomura

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Phytoplankton account for about a half of photosynthesis in the world, making them a key player in the ecological and biogeochemical systems. One of the key traits of phytoplankton is their growth rate because it indicates their productivity and affects their competitive capability. The saturating relationship between phytoplankton growth rate and environmental nutrient concentration has been widely observed yet the mechanisms behind the relationship remain elusive. Here we use a mechanistic model and metadata of phytoplankton to show that the saturating relationship between growth rate and nitrate concentration can be interpreted by intracellular macromolecular allocation. At low nitrate levels, the …

Potential Interactions Between Diatoms And Bacteria Are Shaped By Trace Element Gradients In The Southern Ocean, Alexa R. Sterling, Laura Z. Holland, Randelle M. Bundy, Shannon M. Burns, Kristen N. Buck, P. Dreux Chappell, Bethany D. Jenkins

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The growth of diatoms in the Southern Ocean, especially the region surrounding the West Antarctic Peninsula, is frequently constrained by low dissolved iron and other trace metal concentrations. This challenge may be overcome by mutualisms between diatoms and co-occurring associated bacteria, in which diatoms produce organic carbon as a substrate for bacterial growth, and bacteria produce siderophores, metal-binding ligands that can supply diatoms with metals upon uptake as well as other useful secondary compounds for diatom growth like vitamins. To examine the relationships between diatoms and bacteria in the plankton (diatom) size class (> 3 µm), we sampled both bacterial …

Efficient Elliptic Curve Operators For Jacobian Coordinates, Wesam Eid, Turki F. Al-Somani, Marius C. Silaghi Jan 2022

Efficient Elliptic Curve Operators For Jacobian Coordinates, Wesam Eid, Turki F. Al-Somani, Marius C. Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The speed up of group operations on elliptic curves is proposed using a new type of projective coordinate representation. These operations are the most common computations in key exchange and encryption for both current and postquantum technology. The boost this improvement brings to computational efficiency impacts not only encryption efforts but also attacks. For maintaining security, the community needs to take note of this development as it may need to operate changes in the key size of various algorithms. Our proposed projective representation can be viewed as a warp on the Jacobian projective coordinates, or as a new operation replacing …

Examining Gender Differences In A Forensic Sample Using The Personality Assessment Inventory, Rebecca Elliott Jan 2022

Examining Gender Differences In A Forensic Sample Using The Personality Assessment Inventory, Rebecca Elliott

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Rates of female criminality appear to be rising (The Sentencing Project, 2022), and thus more women are likely to present for evaluation in a forensic capacity. A majority of research in the field of criminal behavior has focused exclusively on male populations. A dearth of research examining risk factors among female offenders has led to a lack of empirically validated tools used to assess women. Additionally, research on gender differences within a forensic population representing a wide range of referral questions has not been conducted. Women offenders present with unique and different risk factors than men (Grimbos et al., 2016); …
