Factors Affecting On-Time Graduation For Students With Disabilities In Washington State, Cynthia M. Gale

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

High school graduation has long been recognized as an important turning point to young adulthood, opening up the doors for future vocational and economic activities. In Washington State, students with disabilities still drop out at rates that are significantly higher than their peers, hampering their ability to achieve this graduation milestone. The purpose of this study was to use a mixed-methods approach to investigate the personal and environmental barriers faced by these students. This study used data from the Washington State Post-School Outcomes survey, which surveys students with disabilities one year after leaving public education. This study examined three years’ …

Implementing Organizational Change In A Multidimensional Community College District: A Case Study, Stacy Hicks, Sean Lassiter, Ashley Miller, Julius Moss

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

Implementing organizational change within complex organizations involves responding to external forces that impact business operations. Leaders guide their organizations through planned change processes by implementing strategic initiatives that affect the entire organization, impact business operations, and influence organizational values (Nadler & Tushman, 1989; Tushman & Nadler, 2012). Community colleges implement change initiatives on behalf of historically, non-dominant students to address systemic issues through developing more inclusive higher education practices (Harris & Wood, 2016; Tate IV, 2008). The following study investigated a matrix-structured community college district located in the Pacific Northwest that implemented change across multiple dimensions to improve student success …

Hook, Line, And Sinker: The Use Of Subsidies, The Globalized System Of Preferences, And Arbitration To Save Our Ocean's Fish, Lindsy Maglich

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

In the wee hours of the morning, local fishermen from the impoverished West African country of Senegal head out to sea on their hand-hewn canoes, hoping to catch fish to bring home to sell for income. Thirty years ago these fishermen would bring in nets full of fish, yet these days the smaller local fisherman cannot compete with the Chinese megatrawlers sweeping their mile-long nets through the waters off of West Africa. Because Chinese fishing fleets have depleted the seas of fish near their home, China has sent 2,600 fishing vessels across the world to exploit the waters of other …

Fourth Amendment Issues And Covid-19 Tracking, Brooke A. Banks Jan 2022

Fourth Amendment Issues And Covid-19 Tracking, Brooke A. Banks

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note argues that the special needs doctrine does not justify warrantless government access to cell site location information (CSLI) for COVID-19 tracking, as individual privacy interests outweigh public health benefits. It advocates for voluntary, privacy-protective measures, such as opt-in apps, to balance privacy and pandemic response.

Estimating Beam Strength Of Metallic Gear Materials, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor Jan 2022

Estimating Beam Strength Of Metallic Gear Materials, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor

Faculty Publications

Expressions for the pulsating or beam strengths of many popular metallic gear materials are derived based on the tensile strength and endurance ratio. The strength values predicted are for a reliability of 99% at load cycles corresponding to that of the endurance strength of the materials. The expressions are based on the consideration of the revised Lewis gear root stress formula by treating the design parameters as random variables associated with the lognormal probability density function and application of the Gerber fatigue failure rule. Pulsating strength predictions are compared with those of AGMA estimates for through-hardened steels and other materials. …

A Contact Stress Capacity Model For Cylindrical Wormsets, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor Jan 2022

A Contact Stress Capacity Model For Cylindrical Wormsets, Edward E. Osakue, Lucky Anetor

Faculty Publications

A contact stress capacity expression is derived for cylindrical worm sets by considering the worm as a helical rack mating with a helical gear. The concept of the equivalent spur gear for a helical gear defined by the instantaneous radius of curvature in the virtual plane of the helical gear is utilized in the contact stress capacity model formulation. All the basic design parameters of worm and gear are incorporated in the expression which explicitly shows the influence of the base and nominal helix angles on the contact stress. By considering the geometry of the worm and gear in engagement, …

Determination Of Allergen Levels, Isoforms, And Their Hydroxyproline Modifications Among Peanut Genotypes By Mass Spectrometry, Justin Marsh, Lee K. Palmer, Stef J. Koppelman, Philip E. Johnson

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The recently published reference genome of peanuts enables a detailed molecular description of the allergenic proteins of the seed. We used LC-MS/MS to investigate peanuts of different genotypes to assess variability and to better describe naturally occurring allergens and isoforms. Using relative quantification by mass spectrometry, minor variation of some allergenic proteins was observed, but total levels of Ara h 1, 2, 3, and 6 were relatively consistent among 20 genotypes. Previously published RPHPLC methodology was used for comparison. The abundance of three Ara h 3 isoforms were variable among the genotypes and contributed to a large proportion of total …

Genomic Approaches To Uncovering The Coevolutionary History Of Parasitic Lice [Review], Kevin P. Johnson Jan 2022

Genomic Approaches To Uncovering The Coevolutionary History Of Parasitic Lice [Review], Kevin P. Johnson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Next-generation sequencing technologies are revolutionizing the fields of genomics, phylogenetics, and population genetics. These new genomic approaches have been extensively applied to a major group of parasites, the lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) of birds and mammals. Two louse genomes have been assembled and annotated to date, and these have opened up new resources for the study of louse biology. Whole genome sequencing has been used to assemble large phylogenomic datasets for lice, incorporating sequences of thousands of genes. These datasets have provided highly supported trees at all taxonomic levels, ranging from relationships among the major groups of lice to those among …

Platforms As Blackacres, Thomas E. Kadri Jan 2022

Platforms As Blackacres, Thomas E. Kadri

Articles

While writing this Article, I interviewed a journalist who writes stories about harmful technologies. To do this work, he gathers information from websites to reveal trends that online platforms would prefer to hide. His team has exposed how Facebook threatens people's privacy and safety, how Amazon hides cheaper deals from consumers, and how Google diverts political speech from our inboxes. You'd think the journalist might want credit for telling these important stories, but he instead insisted on anonymity when we talked because his lawyer was worried he'd be confessing to breaking the law-to committing the crime and tort of cyber-trespass. …

'Ice In The Family' : Exploring The Experiences Of Close Family Members When Another Family Member Is Using Methamphetamine, Douglas Greg Gordon Jan 2022

'Ice In The Family' : Exploring The Experiences Of Close Family Members When Another Family Member Is Using Methamphetamine, Douglas Greg Gordon

Theses

Worldwide, the impact of illicit methamphetamine use has been increasingly recognised over the past two decades. Emergency Department presentations and physical and mental health effects have led to a focus on developing effective treatments for methamphetamine users. Little research has explored the impact, specifically of methamphetamine, on family members. Methamphetamine itself possesses unique differences from other drugs in both its direct effects and its mental and physical health impact on the user.

To this end, this longitudinal qualitative study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to understand the lived experiences of family members of methamphetamine users. The study was conducted in Bunbury …

What Does It Mean To Be An Assistant Principal In Catholic Primary Schools In Western Australia? An Exploratory Instrumental Case Study, Lisa Gallin

Theses

This research aimed to explore the role of assistant principal in Catholic primary schools in Western Australia and is the first empirical study of assistant principals in this context. This research was predominantly qualitative and used interpretivism, specifically symbolic interactionism, as its theoretical perspective. An exploratory instrumental case study methodology was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the viewpoints of assistant principals regarding their role. Data collection methods included an online survey and semi-structured interviews as the primary sources, with a document search and researcher field notes adding further information. Miles et al.’s (2020) interactive data management and analysis …

Adult Depression Screening In Primary Care, Jeremy Bang Jan 2022

Adult Depression Screening In Primary Care, Jeremy Bang

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Routine depression screening of adults in primary care is recommended by many US professional organizations. This quality improvement project found a low baseline rate of screening at a primary care clinic and attempted to increase the rate by creating a revised depression screening workflow. The workflow was created based on staff recommendations gathered through Appreciative Inquiry-grounded interviews. Its efficacy was evaluated by comparing depression screening rates before and after its implementation, and staff evaluated outcomes with anonymous surveys. Overall depression screening rates at the clinic increased from 20.83% to 29.14% (p < .001) in response to the project’s interventions. Continued improvement of the depression screening process at the clinic and other clinics in the parent organization calls for soliciting further staff suggestions and expanding evaluation measures.

Enhancing Diversity In The Nursing Workforce: An Evaluation Of Multicare’S Nurse Pipeline Program, Mckenzie Golden

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Associations exist between poor racial/ethnic representation in the healthcare workforce and lower quality of care, increased disability and mortality in communities of color (Jones et al., 2021; The Sullivan Commission 2004). Research supports that pipeline programs introducing underrepresented students to careers in nursing and allied health are effective at increasing diversity in nursing, student self-efficacy and influence them toward such careers in healthcare (Butler & Ampadu, 2020; Crews et al., 2020; Mei et al., 2022). This study is a program evaluation utilizing a descriptive mixed methods survey to assess the influence of Multicare’s nurse camp on alumni from the 2016-2020 …
