Background/aim: Hyperlactatemia is a common finding in critically ill patients and has significant prognostic implications. However, a single lactate measurement has not been correlated to mortality consistently. In this study, we aimed to correlate the clinical efficacy of lactate clearance for the prediction of mortality in pediatric intensive care unit patients. Materials and methods: This retrospective observational study was performed in the pediatric intensive care unit in patients with lactate level >3 mmol/lt. AIM: To evaluate the nature of dental related morbidity in British Antarctic Survey (BAS) deployed personnel, and to compare the findings to those in other deployed population groups. Additional aims include outlining the evidence-based approach to further developing a training programme for non-dentists, to manage dental emergencies. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of dental morbidity between 2015 - 2020 reported through the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit (BASMU) database of dental reported morbidity recorded by deployed medical officers. RESULTS: Analysis and comparison of dental morbidity in deployed personnel to austere environments revealed similarity, in that relatively minor conditions led to the …

As the director of the MAGIC Lab, at Goldsmiths University of London, I oversee projects that combine psychological research methods with performance magic.For instance, we study misdirection and forcing tolearn more about consciousness and free will. We alsoseek to apply many of these principles to non-magicalcontexts. For example, we are currently exploring waysof implementing forcing principles in computergames, and we are even ‘teaching’ artificial agentsmagic deception, as part of a project to develop newcyber security technologies. By mixing magic trickswith science, we aim to uncover the secrets of the human mind (see Experiencing the Impossible [1]).

This collection consists of laminated color photographs that were used by the Rock Hill Herald in newspaper editions from 1987-1999. Many of the photographs have a caption from the newspaper the date from which they were used in the print edition laminated on the reverse side. The photographs document many persons, places, activities, and other events in the Rock Hill Herald distribution area. The Rock Hill Herald is the local newspaper headquartered in Rock Hill SC and at various times was known as the Evening Herald and The Herald.

Many of copyright’s core concepts—from authorship and ownership to infringement and fair use—are being challenged by the rapid rise of generative AI. Whether in service of creativity or capital, however, copyright law is perfectly capable of absorbing this latest innovation. More interesting than the doctrinal debates that AI provokes, then, is the opportunity it presents to revisit the purposes of the copyright system in the age of AI. After introducing the AI-copyright challenge in Part 1, Part 2 considers the guiding principles and normative objectives that underlie—and so ought to inform—copyright law and its response to AI technologies. Physical activity (movement) and sedentary behaviour (sitting) play a major role in the overall health of children, yet Australian children are failing to meet the government recommendations (Active Healthy Kids Australia (AHKA) 2016). This thesis investigates the social history of one of Perth’s oldest and longest-running amateur theatres, the Patch Theatre Company, from when it was founded in 1939 by Ida and Edward Beeby until their departure from the company in the late 1940s. The Beebys’ strong partnership and dynamic personalities helped build Patch into a successful company and thriving community. It was a school of music, drama, and dance, and one of the most popular amateur theatres in Western Australia during and after the Second World War. The development, operation and impact of Patch has been largely overlooked in Western Australian histories. …

Background: The role of the nurse and the way in which nursing care is delivered has undergone significant change in recent years. Enrolled nursing, in particular, epitomises the extent of these changes. The scope within which enrolled nurses (ENs) may now practice grows ever wider, reaching into the skill domains once reserved for registered nurses (RNs). Medication administration is one such example. These changes, while addressing issues of nursing shortages and workforce flexibility, have also resulted in increasing role confusion between RNs and ENs, creating issues around appropriate delegation and adequate supervision.

Inscriptions on graph paper, on monitors and on various screensare ubiquitous in the birthing room; they reassure, worry, beep,light up and inform protocols. According to Latour (1985) theirpresence is not a result of a carefully planned logical choice, butof a legacy of mustering allies and convincing alignments. UsingBarad’s (2007) framework of agential realism, this paper explores thenotion of intra-actions between objects and agencies of observationin the phenomenon of birth, using a socio-political and historicalconfiguration. It presents some surprising accounts of obstetricsand gynaecology and showcases how historical inscriptions andinstruments materialized today’s birthing practices. This thesis explores how an understanding of an immaterial dimension of human experience was expressed and experienced in the context of nineteenth century engagement with science and technology. Drawing upon methods of media archaeology, it presents examples of visual technologies where apparatus and images representative of scientific and technological objectivity appear to have been appropriated and modified for the purpose of experiencing this dimension, an experience this thesis calls enchantment. The thesis suggests that some period specific behaviours associated with these visual technologies are sophisticated and subtle mechanisms that contribute to the affective and cognitive experience of enchantment. Immersive experiences in theatre and digital games are often characterized by immediacy in space and time, focusing on the imminent action of the here and now. Live action roleplay (larp) practices, by contrast, can encourage reflexivity. Indepth knowledge of injury and illness epidemiology in circus arts is lacking. Comparing results across studies is difficult due to inconsistent methods and definitions. In 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) consensus group proposed a standard method for recording and reporting epidemiological data on injuries and illnesses in sports and stated that sport-specific extension statements are needed to capture the context of each sport. This is the circus-specific extension to be used with the IOC consensus statement. International circus arts researchers in injury and illness epidemiology and performing arts medicine formed a consensus working group. Consensus statement development included a …

The problem is the continuing sidelining of the Humanities in university teaching and research funding. If this attenuation and sidelining continue, the world will be a much more cruel and dangerous place, as there will be no moral or ethical check on scientific and technological developments from a humanitarian perspective. This thesis will explore the influence of two dance modalities (dance improvisation and Zumba dance) on divergent thinking (i.e., an aspect of creativity) in older adults using a quasi-experimental design. Given the existing research on dance as a creativity intervention in the younger half of the population, this study may address a gap in the literature by extending these findings to older adults. Once prescreened to ensure cognitive competence and adequate physical mobility, participants will complete a divergent thinking task before their designated 20-minute dance intervention. Following this collection period, we work to produce a report that provides our university community with vital information about the success of our graduates and allows us to address questions posed by prospective students and families. Double bassists face a particular conundrum in Handel’s Messiah—when exactly should they play? This dissertation will address this confusion and offer possible solutions. In order to arrive at conclusions, three areas will be examined: key manuscripts closely associated with Handel, critical performances given under the composer’s direction, and historical evidence related to the double bass in Handel’s time. Regarding manuscripts, Handel’s autograph manuscript and the copy that became his conducting score will be closely examined. This paper explores inclusive entrepreneurship course design across European universities. Drawing a sample of six cases across five universities the paper adopts a multiple case study research design to explore how educators are supporting the Missing Entrepreneurs according to the OECD definition (women, people with disability, refugees and migrants, young people and seniors). The findings show interesting and innovative pedagogical approaches to emerge by analogy and replication. The paper provides empirical and practical contribution for educators in terms of developing entrepreneurship courses according to the principles of universal design for learning drawing on needs of the Missing Entrepreneurs. International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Cambridge undergraduates have regular active-learning opportunities in small-group tutorials, in which they solve problems and discuss ideas based on course material. Would they see any value in performing similar tasks in flipped-classroom settings, or would they regard the introduction of a second active-learning modality as redundant? Following the replacement of traditional lectures with flipped teaching within three physiology courses, with tutorials ongoing, questionnaire responses showed that students felt that they learned and understood more, and felt better-prepared for exams. Although similarities were recognised, the context of the active learning evidently made flipped classroom and tutorial teaching feel very different, probably …
