Long-term environmental change, sudden pulses of extreme perturbation, or a combination of both can trigger regime shifts by changing the processes and feedbacks which determine community assembly, structure, and function, altering the state of ecosystems. Our understanding of the mechanisms that stabilise against regime shifts or lock communities into altered states is limited, yet also critical to anticipating future states, preventing regime shifts, and reversing unwanted state change. Ocean acidification contributes to the restructuring and simplification of algal systems, however the mechanisms through which this occurs and whether additional drivers are involved requires further study. Using monthly surveys over three …

In Part 1 of ‘Encountering Berlant’, we encounter the promise and provocation of Lauren Berlant's work. In 1000-word contributions, geographers and others stay with what Berlant's thought offers contemporary human geography. They amplify an encounter with their work, demonstrating how a concept, idea, or style disrupts something, opens up a new possibility, or simply invites thinking otherwise. The encounters range across the incredible body of work Berlant left us with, from the ‘national sentimentality’ trilogy through to recent work on negativity. Varying in form and tone, the encounters exemplify and enact the inexhaustible plenitude of Berlant's thought: fantasy, the case, …

Abstract
Opioid pain medications are currently viewed as a standard part of pain control in the vast majority of surgical procedures. However, opioid pain medications can have harmful effects on patients leading to increased length of hospital stay, unplanned readmission, and contribution to relapse or development of opioid use disorder. An opportunity for improved practice of pain management lies within opioid alternative pain medications such as dexmedetomidine. Evidence-based literature reviews have shown that dexmedetomidine has promise as an analgesic medication within the perioperative period with fewer harmful side effects. Barriers to more widespread use of this medication include staff unfamiliarity …

Manuka Honey Reduces The Virulence Of Pectobacterium Brasiliense By Suppressing Genes That Encode Plant Cell Wall-Degrading Enzymes, Ava Sheila, Subandiyah Siti, Rohman Muhammad Saifur, Ogawa Naoto, Joko Tri
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The primary virulence of soft rot pectobacteria, including Pectobacterium brasiliense, is mainly determined by the massive production of plant cell wall-degrading enzymes (PCWDEs), which promote plant tissue maceration in many crops. The antibiotic treatment to treat bacterial soft rot causes environmental problems and potentially affects resistance. Antibiotic resistance is driving interest in antimicrobial treatments, and no organism has been reported to have acquired resistance to honey. However, the use of honey as a therapeutic agent for plant bacterial pathogens has rarely been studied. Therefore, this study was undertaken to determine the in vitro effect of Manuka honey against P. brasiliense …

This paper presents the study results on stress and deformation of the piston crown of a biogas engine converted from a conventional diesel engine using dedicated software. The original diesel engine was modified to reduce the compression ratio to suit biogas fuel. The original engine's combustion chamber and compression ratio were changed by modifying the piston crown to a heron type. The parameters of in-cylinder pressure and temperature were determined by the thermodynamic simulation software AVL Boost. Research results show that the in-cylinder pressure decreased compared to diesel when using biogas fuel, but the temperature increased. The infinite element method-based …

Determining Kinetic Parameters Of Cellulose And Lignin Pyrolysis By Gaussian Process Regression (Gpr) Method, Pichayaporn Viriya-Amornkij, Kazunori Kuwana
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
The ignition and flame-spread processes in the forest and urban fires involve the pyrolysis reactions of biomass materials. One of the most common methods for estimating the fire performance of a material is the evaluation of kinetic parameters, i.e., activation energy (𝐸), pre-exponential factor (𝐴), and reaction model (𝑓(𝛼)), from thermogravimetric analysis (TG) data. Typically, 𝐸 is estimated based on an Arrhenius-type equation such as Kissinger, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Friedman equations. Then, its value is adjusted along with other parameters by assuming a reaction model, e.g., the 𝑛-order model. This study proposes a Gaussian process regression (GPR) method to determine …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 1692-1734, 2022. Meditative and mindful exercise are types of physical exercise during which people pay attention, on purpose, to each new present moment without judging their experience. The goal is to apply an accepting awareness of the environment, bodily sensations, thoughts, and emotions without labeling them (e.g., good or bad). The literature centers on qigong, tai chi, and yoga, which are types of mindful exercise that improve mental and cardiovascular health. It is unclear if meditative and mindful walking also improve these health domains. To the authors’ knowledge, this question has not been addressed …

English Language Learners (ELLs) are one of the fastest growing student groups in the United States, yet school counselors often feel unprepared to address their unique needs. To better prepare school counselors to work with ELLs, counselor educators can integrate experiential learning activities that are grounded practice. Yet, little is known about the types of work experiences school counselors encounter when working with ELL students. This phenomenological study described the experiences of eight, first year school counselors who work with ELLs. Findings inform the types of training scenarios counselor educators can use to prepare school counselors-in-training (SCIT) to work with …

The ACA 2014 Code of Ethics clearly states the mandate for counselor competence in C.2.a. It is noted that “Counselor practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, state and national credentials, and appropriate professional experience” (p. 8). Given the importance of competencies, ethical standards, and the emphasis on best practice, the paucity of these factors in regard to training and supervision for counselors working with child and adolescent populations is concerning. This article offers a conceptualization of the culture of childhood leading to the need for cultural competency. It outlines information specific …
