Socialism Of Linguistic Phenomenon: Its Concept And Implications (Readings In Positivist Social Thought And The Implications Of Its Application On Language), Ali Abdel Rahman Ibrahim Taha
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Language is a human phenomenon with multiple aspects. On the one hand, it is a psychological phenomenon and on the other hand it is a social phenomenon. Therefore, I found interest from scholars in various fields, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, and with the influence of the pioneer of sociology, Emil Dor Chayem, language was classified as a social phenomenon by the linguist de Saussure, and this classification resulted in the application of the principles of the positivism approach as defined by Dor Chayem on language. This study aims to identify the positivism approach in its social …

A War Of Compassion: Challenging The Species Barrier In The Works Of Céline And Léautaud, Dawn Mohrmann
A War Of Compassion: Challenging The Species Barrier In The Works Of Céline And Léautaud, Dawn Mohrmann
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Jacques Derrida, when affirming the undeniability of animal suffering in L’Animal que donc je suis, states that there is “une guerre en cours … entre d’une part, ceux qui violent non seulement la vie animale mais jusqu’à ce sentiment de compassion et d’autre part, ceux qui en appellent au témoignage irrécusable de cette pitié” (50). This study investigates the nature of this ongoing war to which Derrida referred. I investigate both the nature of human cruelty and its counterpoint, empathy, which I propose as the response to the anthropocentrism that allows this struggle to continue. Through investigating theories of empathy, …
Poverty, Child Maltreatment And Adverse Childhood Experiences – Just Comorbidities?, Darejan Dvalishvili
Poverty, Child Maltreatment And Adverse Childhood Experiences – Just Comorbidities?, Darejan Dvalishvili
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Both child abuse and neglect (hereafter maltreatment) and poverty are serious social and public health problems that are related to numerous negative and costly outcomes as well as being related to other so-called adverse childhood experiences (ACES). A significant, yet recent, body of work suggests a strong, perhaps causal, relationship between poverty and maltreatment. Much remains unknown about how they are associated and whether or not a true causal relationship exists while controlling for other potential risks in the ecology. This dissertation conducted a secondary analysis of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to help address this gap. First, …

Dealing With Dimensionality: Problems And Techniques In High-Dimensional Statistics, Cezareo Rodriguez
Dealing With Dimensionality: Problems And Techniques In High-Dimensional Statistics, Cezareo Rodriguez
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In modern data analysis, problems involving high dimensional data with more variables than subjects is increasingly common. Two such cases are mediation analysis and distributed optimization. In Chapter 2 we start with an overview of high dimensional statistics and mediation analysis. In Chapter 3 we motivate and prove properties for a new marginal screening procedure for performing high dimensional mediation analysis. This screening procedure is shown via simulation to perform better than benchmark approaches and is applied to a DNA methylation study. In Chapter 4 we construct a cryptosystem that accurately performs distributed penalized quantile regression in the high-dimensional setting …
Perceptual Experience, Representation, And The Environment, James Gulledge
Perceptual Experience, Representation, And The Environment, James Gulledge
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Recent cognitive science suggests that the system responsible for perceptual experience is flexible, can learn, and is robustly affected by information stored in subjects’ minds. My dissertation is about the account of the mind and subjective awareness that emerges if this picture of perceptual experience is true. Whether perceptual experience is affected by stored information is usually tied to discussions of so-called ‘cognitive penetration’ (what I call cognitive ‘permeation’). I consider the focus on cognitive permeation largely as a red herring, instead holding that we should view the relevant epistemic issue more broadly: as that of whether changing stores of …

An Experiment Testing The Influence Of Oral Interpretation On Entertainment And Persuasion, Shane Semmler, Megan Swets, Bailey Quanbeck, Blake Warner
National Forensic Journal
A post-test only experimental design evaluated the empirical influence of three 2016 National Forensic Association final round oral interpretation performances (two Dramatic Interpretations and one Prose Interpretation) on entertainment (parasocial interaction, identification, and narrative transportation); the capacity of entertainment to elicit enjoyment; and the capacity of entertainment to elicit persuasion (i.e., changes to attitude valence and attitude importance) through the mediating process of reduced counterarguing against subjective interpretations of arguments in the oral interpretation performances. The influence of oral interpretation on entertainment, enjoyment, counterarguing, and persuasion was substantially similar to that found in the larger body of empirical scholarship investigating …
Resisting And Persisting Through Organizational Exit: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Disclosing Sexual Harassment In Collegiate Debate, M. A., Tennley A. Vik
Resisting And Persisting Through Organizational Exit: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Disclosing Sexual Harassment In Collegiate Debate, M. A., Tennley A. Vik
National Forensic Journal
Collegiate debate has documented extensive problems with sexual harassment. This manuscript uses the first author’s layered account of sexual harassment experienced as a collegiate debater, her transition to a different university, and the management of private information with her family. Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory and a plethora of studies provide a theoretical lens of the first author’s autoethnographic experience. We advance CPM theory by examining how young adult children manage their privacy through constructing more rigid privacy boundaries than their adolescent counterparts and provide the first look at how disclosure can both enable and constrain victims/survivors of sexual harassment, …

The Contemporary "White Trash" Memoir In Literary, Social And Political Contexts, Ursula Hansberry
Student Theses and Dissertations
This senior thesis is about class in the United States, as expressed and represented in three critically and popularly successful memoirs published by white working-class writers between 2005 and 2018. My thesis explores how these memoirs and their critical and commercial reception demonstrate a profound shift in cultural and social representations of white working-class upbringings in the United States, although not in any simple or obvious way. While readers intuitively grasp that a memoir is not the truth in a directly literal sense, but rather a document that is constructed, edited, framed, shaped, and dramatized, readers and critics at the …
A Summer Of Mass Murder: 1941 Rehearsal For The Hungarian Holocaust, George Eisen
A Summer Of Mass Murder: 1941 Rehearsal For The Hungarian Holocaust, George Eisen
Purdue University Press Books
Most accounts of the Holocaust focus on trainloads of prisoners speeding toward Auschwitz, with its chimneys belching smoke and flames, in the summer of 1944. This book provides a hitherto untold chapter of the Holocaust by exploring a prequel to the gas chambers: the face-to-face mass murder of Jews in Galicia by bullets.
The summer of 1941 ushered in a chain of events that had no precedent in the rapidly unfolding history of World War II and the Holocaust. In six weeks, more than twenty thousand Hungarian Jews were forcefully deported to Galicia and summarily executed. In exploring the fate …

Sik3 & Wnk Signals Through Fray To Regulate Glial K+ Buffering And Seizure Susceptibility In Drosophila Models Of Hyperexcitability, Lorenzo Laronn Lones
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
K+ homeostasis is important for maintaining healthy, physiological levels of neuronal activity. Glial cells play a central role in maintaining homeostatic ion gradients. In previous work from our lab, we unravel a glial K+ buffering program that is centered on a key kinase, salt-inducible kinase 3 (SIK3). SIK3-HDAC4 signaling in glial regulates the transcription of channels and transporters involved in water and ion transport. Defects in this pathway lead to peripheral nerve edema, neuronal hyperactivity, and seizure sensitivity. In an hyperexcitability mutant, eag Shaker, we show this pathway is downregulated and genetic activation suppresses seizure behavior. In this thesis, I …

The Impact Of Trauma-Informed Professional Development On Classroom Climate, Amber Lenz
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
When students experience trauma or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the home, such as substance abuse, mental illness, neglect, or violence, schools become an important place in which support, kindness, and understanding are needed the most. School can, for some students, be a place of physical safety and emotional stability. Oftentimes, the weight of what is going on at home or in the community is being miscategorized and is seen as misbehavior or laziness in a student. If teachers do not learn how to deal with the trauma in a supportive and validating way, students will stay distracted and disengaged …

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to determine how effective paired-partner reading is when used in the classroom with curriculum. Within a 7th grade language arts classroom, this reading strategy focuses on student collaboration, reading comprehension, and providing the opportunity to read aloud on a regular basis. Researchers Stahl, Heubach, and Cramond (1997) stated, “Partner reading provides an opportunity for students to read connected text within a socially supportive context. This context should both motivate children to read well and provide a supportive environment to aid the development of reading skill” (p. 13). The overall goal of this study …

More Time To Play? A Study On Free-Play And Its Effects On Behavior And Academics In School, Emily Edland
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Over the two-week study, the researcher collected data on how students’ academic growth and social-emotional behaviors were affected between having free-play and academic work during independent time. To study two dependent variables, the researcher asked two research questions: Research Question 1: How does free play and/or recess in schools affect students’ capacity to learn (how do test scores change when students engage in free play versus independent academic work)? Research Question 2: What effect does the amount of free play/recess have on students’ social/emotional skills and behaviors during academic lessons? The participants of the study were 5- and 6-year-olds in …
