Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Technique For Nanoplastics Detection, Boonphop Chaisrikhwun Jan 2022

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Technique For Nanoplastics Detection, Boonphop Chaisrikhwun

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The size-dependent effect of nanoplastics (NPLs) restricts the quantification of NPLs by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. In this study, we successfully established an innovative preparation method to eliminate this effect. This developed SERS method allowed us to quantify 100-, 300-, 600-, and 800-nm polystyrene nanospheres (PSNSs) in diverse aqueous conditions at a low concentration. The SERS substrate was easily fabricated and used as NPLs signal enhancement with sputtering gold particles onto a glass cover slide. By preconcentrating and dissolving PSNSs in toluene, SERS technique can be successfully quantify NPLs at extremely low concentrations with a limit of detection (LOD) …

Enzyme-Free Hydrogen Peroxide Sensor From Dual-Shaped Plasmonic Silver Nanoparticles, Charles Oliver Avenido Jan 2022

Enzyme-Free Hydrogen Peroxide Sensor From Dual-Shaped Plasmonic Silver Nanoparticles, Charles Oliver Avenido

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

A novel growth-based strategy for the determination of hydrogen peroxide has been developed using a mixture of silver nanospheres (AgNSs) and citrate-capped silver nanoprisms (AgNPrs). The unique ability of hydrogen peroxide to oxidize silver nanoparticles and reduce silver metal consequently was exploited to produce a highly sensitive and selective sensor (AgNSs/NPrs). Citrate-capping of the AgNPrs only allows the lateral growth that resulted in a red shift and intensity enhancement of the in-plane dipole plasmon resonance (IPDPR) band. Consequently, distinct hues from yellow, orange, red, purple to blue were produced from the diluted sensors. Ratiometric analysis was employed to quantify H2O2 …

Theoretical Study Of Lithium Absorption In Silicon Nanostructures For Application As Anodes In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Fadjar Mulya

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The absorption and adsorption of lithium in silicon nanostructures: silicon quantum dots (SiQDs), silicon nanowires (SiNWs) and silicon nanopores (SiNPs) were studied using density functional theory (DFT) with M06-2X hybrid functional and 6-31G+(d) basis set. The tetrahedral sites, both Tdinner and Tdsurface, are the most preferred sites for lithiation due to their favorable binding energy profiles. For single lithium absorption and adsorption, SiQDs exhibit a binding energy of 1 eV, SiNWs demonstrate a binding energy of 1.28 eV, and SiNPs display a binding energy of 0.73 eV. Similarly, multiple lithium adsorptions yield binding energies of 1.12 eV for SiQDs, 1.21 …

Production Of Vanillate From Lignin Derivatives Using Genetically Modifiedescherichia Coli, Jedsadakorn Ninrat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Vanillic acid is an important compound used in food, beverage, fragrance, and pharmaceutical industries. Vanillic acid can be produced by using either natural plant, native, and engineered microorganisms. However, the industrial scale production of vanillic acid compound still difficult due to low yielding production which can be improved by metabolic engineering of bacterial cells. Hence, the efficient biocatalyst, engineering, and biotechnology process can be a promising strategy to enhance vanillic acid production from lignin derivatives and strengthen the large-scale production for industrial approach. Among several lignin-derived compounds, ferulic acid is a widely used substrate for vanillic acid production. Recently, the …

Dna-Templated Synthesis Of Cationic Styryl Dyes, Kriangsak Faikhruea Jan 2022

Dna-Templated Synthesis Of Cationic Styryl Dyes, Kriangsak Faikhruea

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Styryl dye is a class of pi-conjugated dye that shows several desirable optical properties, such as high photostability, solvatochromic characteristics, and high fluorescence quantum yields. Due to the responsiveness to the binding with the target biomolecules such as nucleic acids, some of these dyes have been widely employed for biomolecular detection and cellular imaging. These dyes are typically synthesized via an aldol-type reaction between a methyl heterocycle and an aromatic aldehyde in the presence of acid or base as a catalyst. However, the conventional method of synthesizing these dyes is inefficient, time-consuming, and involves the use of excessive chemicals, as …

Renewable Energy Federalism, Danielle Stokes Jan 2022

Renewable Energy Federalism, Danielle Stokes

Law Faculty Publications

No one seriously questions that an improved and decarbonized energy supply system is a key component of climate change mitigation, but the United States’ system of federalism complicates the siting of utility-scale renewable energy facilities. The new Biden Administration presents the United States with an opportunity to reimagine how this country regulates renewable energy siting, allowing for substantial national progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, primary siting authority for renewable energy projects rests with state and local governments, which generally exercise that authority through zoning and land use planning, while the federal government approves most interstate energy delivery systems. …

Computing Leaky Modes Of Optical Fibers Using A Feast Algorithm For Polynomial Eigenproblems, Jay Gopalakrishnan, B. Q. Parker, Pieter Vandenberge Jan 2022

Computing Leaky Modes Of Optical Fibers Using A Feast Algorithm For Polynomial Eigenproblems, Jay Gopalakrishnan, B. Q. Parker, Pieter Vandenberge

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An efficient contour integral technique to approximate a cluster of nonlinear eigenvalues of a polynomial eigenproblem, circumventing certain large inversions from a linearization, is presented. It is applied to the nonlinear eigenproblem that arises from a frequency-dependent perfectly matched layer. This approach is shown to result in an accurate method for computing leaky modes of optical fibers. Extensive computations on an antiresonant fiber with a complex transverse microstructure are reported. This structure is found to present substantial computational difficulties: Even when employing over one million degrees of freedom, the fiber model appears to remain in a preasymptotic …

A One-Dimensional Field Dislocation Mechanics Model Using Discontinuous Galerkin Method, Ja'nya Breeden, Dow Drake, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Saurabh Puri Jan 2022

A One-Dimensional Field Dislocation Mechanics Model Using Discontinuous Galerkin Method, Ja'nya Breeden, Dow Drake, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Saurabh Puri

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A numerical solution strategy for a one-dimensional field dislocation mechanics (FDM) model using the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is developed. The FDM model is capable of simulating the dynamics of discrete, nonsingular dislocations using a partial differential equation involving a conservation law for the Burgers vector content with constitutive input for nucleation and velocity. Modeling of individual dislocation lines with an equilibrium compact core structure in the context of this continuum elastoplastic framework requires a non-convex stored energy density. Permanent deformation and stress redistribution caused by the dissipative transport of dislocations is modeled using thermodynamics-based constitutive laws. A DG method …

Periodic Points Of Polynomials Over Finite Fields, Derek Garton Jan 2022

Periodic Points Of Polynomials Over Finite Fields, Derek Garton

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fix an odd prime p. If r is a positive integer and f is a polynomial with coefficients in Fpr, let Pp,r⁡(f) be the proportion of P1⁢(Fpr) that is periodic with respect to f. We show that as r increases, the expected value of Pp,r⁡(f), as f ranges over quadratic polynomials, is less than 22/(log⁡log⁡pr). This result follows from a uniformity theorem on specializations of dynamical systems of rational functions over residually finite Dedekind domains. The specialization theorem generalizes previous work by Juul et al. that holds for rings of integers of number fields. Moreover, under stronger hypotheses, we effectivize …

New Originalism: Arizona's Founding Progressives On Extreme Punishment, John Mills, Aliya Sternstein Jan 2022

New Originalism: Arizona's Founding Progressives On Extreme Punishment, John Mills, Aliya Sternstein

Faculty Scholarship

Originalism, together with textualism, has been of growing interest to legal scholars and jurists alike. Discerning and putting forth the views of “the founders” has become part and parcel of effective advocacy, particularly regarding constitutional questions. Arizona is no exception, with its courts explicitly giving originalism primacy over all other interpretive doctrines for discerning the meaning of an ambiguous provision of its Constitution.

Yet, the Arizona state courts have not engaged with the views of the state’s founders on key issues concerning the purposes of punishment, as demonstrated by the founders’ words and deeds. Arizona was founded in 1912 as …

Understanding A Low Vitamin D State In The Context Of Covid-19, James Bernard Walsh, Daniel Mccartney, Eamon Laird, Kevin Mccarroll, Declan G. Byrne, Martin Healy, Paul O'Shea, Rose Anne Kenny, John L. Faul

Articles

While a low vitamin D state has been associated with an increased risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2 in addition to an increased severity of COVID-19 disease, a causal role is not yet established. Here, we review the evidence relating to i) vitamin D and its role in SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease ii) the vitamin D status in the Irish adult population iii) the use of supplemental vitamin D to treat a deficient status and iv) the application of the Bradford-Hill causation criteria. We conclude that reverse causality probably makes a minimal contribution to the presence of low vitamin D …

Identification Of Biomarkers For The Prediction Of Radiation Toxicity In Prostate Cancer Patients, Daniel Cullen Jan 2022

Identification Of Biomarkers For The Prediction Of Radiation Toxicity In Prostate Cancer Patients, Daniel Cullen

Doctoral

The success of radiotherapy in tumour control depends on the total dose given. However, the tolerance of the normal tissues surrounding the tumour limits this dose. It is not known why some patients develop radiation toxicity and, currently, it is not possible to predict before treatment which patients will experience adverse effects. Thus, there is an unmet clinical need for a new test to identify patients at risk of radiation toxicity. The aim of this study was to determine if spectral variations in blood lymphocytes from PCa patients may suggest Raman spectral bands that could be used in future research …

The Neoliberal Game: An Critical Analysis Of Children's Non Competitive Grassroots Football, Grace Gallacher Jan 2022

The Neoliberal Game: An Critical Analysis Of Children's Non Competitive Grassroots Football, Grace Gallacher

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This thesis explores the propensity for harms throughout children’s non-competitive football. Adopting ethnographic approaches this project follows a team of under 9’s non-competitive team in a SW FA league, it analyses their private social media page and conducted 18 semi-structured interviews with life-long players, parents, coaches and referees. It advances a critical criminology of sport by presenting an alternative framework to Elias and the Civilising process by using contemporary critical criminology, namely ultra-realism and deviant leisure. By using ultra-realism and deviant leisure this study examines the underlying systemic harm which comes from the neoliberal environment of sport, including children’s non-competitive …
