Physicochemical characteristics of porous substrates (longan biochar, corn biochar, and pumice) including specific surface area (SSA), pore volume (Vp), and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were determined. Longan biochar had the highest SSA, Vp, and CEC, followed by corn biochar and pumice. Then, columns filled with each of these 3 substrates together with gravel as a control treatment, were evaluated to compare wastewater treatment efficiency under different hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Each system had been acclimatized with wastewater for 8 weeks. Then, influent and effluent were analyzed at 1, 3, 5, and 7 day intervals. Water analysis revealed that biochar-based systems …

Pollution has reached to a critical threshold affecting the climate and diversity of the planet Earth. All global authorities have included pollution control in their agenda for near future. Most of the environmental research nowadays is focused on removing waste generated by anthropogenic activities, may it be solid, liquid or gaseous waste. Bioremediation is believed to be the most eco-friendly approach for reducing or removing pollutants contaminating different matrices of the environment. There are various methods covered under the umbrella term of bioremediation. Chemotaxis-mediated bioremediation attracted attention of several research groups since early decade of twenty first century due to …

The concentrations of inorganic elements in soils of Saje, Ita-Oshin, Premier, and Oke-Diya dumpsites were determined using an X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer to assess the soil quality through chronological changes with depths. A soil core sampler collects 56 samples at 20, 40, 60, and 80 cm depths. Saje showed high mean concentrations of Ca, K, Fe, Rb, and Ti at all depths, while Oke-Diya revealed high mean concentrations of Ca, K, Fe, Rb, Ti, Mn, Zn, V, Cr, and Ni at all depths. These concentrations were in a closed range suggesting a build-up of elements in the soil profiles. Oke-Diya had …

Genomic Characterization Of Necrotrophic Effector Sensitivity Genes In Wheat, Katherine Running
Genomics and Bioinformatics
The necrotrophic fungal pathogens Parastagonospora nodorum and Pyrenophora tritici-repentis cause the diseases septoria nodorum blotch (SNB) and tan spot, respectively, reducing yield by decreasing the photosynthetic area of the plant. The pathogens produce necrotrophic effectors (NEs) that target host genes to induce cell death. The Tsc1-Ptr ToxC and Tsn1-Ptr ToxA interactions contribute to plant susceptibility to tan spot, while the Tsn1-SnToxA and Snn5-B1-SnTox5 interactions contribute to SNB susceptibility. The three main goals of this dissertation were to clone susceptibility genes Tsc1 and Snn5 and develop robust genetic markers for use in marker-assisted elimination of Tsn1. A genetic linkage map was …

Led Astray: How Command Influence Contributed To The Atrocities Of The Us-Dakota War Of 1862-1865, Jacob Morris
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
During the US-Dakota War of 1862-1865, fighting and bloodshed targeted unarmed non-combatants on both sides. American memory has often fixated only on actions committed by Dakota peoples, Oceti Sakowin, that were deemed depraved. However, sane and level-headed US soldiers also killed and mutilated wounded warriors, as well as fired on women and children. The key elements that made disciplined American soldiers in the US-Dakota War commit atrocities against fallen enemies and noncombatants were the illegal and immoral actions passively permitted, acquiesced through slight penalties, and outright ordered by ranking army commanders prior to and during the campaigns. Commanders were able …

Using Electronic Handgrip Dynamometry To Determine Human Performance In Master's Aged Cyclists And Triathletes, Lukus Klawitter
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Purpose: This dissertation study sought to examine the correlations of maximal handgrip strength (HGS), rate of HGS force development, and HGS fatigability on lean body mass, peak power, functional threshold power, and aerobic capacity in master’s aged cyclists and triathletes. Methods: A cross-sectional design was utilized and the analytic sample included n=31 master’s aged cyclists and triathletes (age: 49.1±10.4 years). Achievement motivation was self-reported with a Situational Motivation Scale Questionnaire. A stationary bicycle trainer and metabolic cart was used to evaluate peak power and aerobic capacity with standardized protocols. Whole body bioelectrical impedance measured lean body mass. An electronic handgrip …
