Alternate Day Oral Iron Replacement Versus Daily Intake In Women With Iron-Deficiency Anemia In Basrah, Muntadar Jafar Mawla, Mohammed A. Al-Anssari, Qutaiba M. Dawood, Murtadha A. Jeber, Asaad A. Khalaf
Iraqi National Journal of Medicine
Background: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) remains a major global health concern, disproportionately affecting women of reproductive age. Conventional daily iron supplementation, though effective, is often associated with poor adherence due to gastrointestinal side effects. Emerging evidence suggests that alternate-day dosing may enhance iron absorption and tolerability, but comparative efficacy data in clinical settings remain limited. Aim: This study aimed to compare the hematological and iron store responses of women with IDA in Basrah, Iraq, between alternate-day and daily oral iron supplementation regimens. Methods: A total of 97 women with confirmed IDA (hemoglobin [Hb] < 12 g/dL, serum ferritin < 15 ng/mL) were enrolled in a prospective follow-up cohort study. The participants were divided into two groups: Group B (n = 48) received 100 mg of elemental iron daily, while Group A (n = 49) received the same dose every other day. Serum ferritin and hematological parameters (Hb, red blood cell [RBC] count, hematocrit) were assessed at baseline, three weeks, six weeks, and three months. ANOVA and paired t-tests were used for statistical analysis, with a significance level of P < 0.05. Results: Compared to the daily group, the alternate-day group exhibited a significantly higher mean increase in serum ferritin (28.6 ± 4.2 ng/mL vs. 22.3 ± 3.8 ng/mL, P = 0.001) and hemoglobin (2.8 ± 0.5 g/dL vs. 2.1 ± 0.4 g/dL, P = 0.001) at three months. The alternate-day group demonstrated earlier and more sustained improvements in iron reserves (P < 0.01 at all follow-ups), but both regimens increased RBC counts. Conclusion: In women with IDA, alternate-day iron supplementation is more effective in restoring hemoglobin and iron stores than daily dosing, possibly due to improved absorption and reduced hepcidin inhibition. These findings suggest potential benefits for patient adherence and clinical outcomes, supporting the use of alternate-day regimens as a superior therapeutic approach. To validate these results, further randomized controlled trials are necessary.

Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is the most common form of spinal deformity with unclear pathogenesis. In this study, we first reanalyzed the loci associated with IS, drawing upon previous studies. Subsequently, we mapped these loci to candidate genes using either location-based or function-based strategies. To further substantiate our findings, we verified the enrichment of variants within these candidate genes across several large IS cohorts encompassing Chinese, East Asian, and European populations. Consequently, we identified variants in the EPHA4 gene as compelling candidates for IS. To confirm their pathogenicity, we generated zebrafish mutants of epha4a. Remarkably, the zebrafish epha4a mutants exhibited …

Cancer Vaccination And Immune-Based Approaches In Pancreatic Cancer, Matthew D. Bloom, Ali Raza Shaikh, Zhengyang Sun, Babar Bashir, Adam E. Snook
Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive malignancy with high recurrence rates even after curative resection and adjuvant chemotherapy. Although immunotherapeutic approaches, such as immune checkpoint blockade (ICB), have revolutionized the treatment of some solid tumor malignancies, this has not been the case for PDAC. Several characteristics of PDAC, including its distinctive desmoplastic tumor microenvironment (TME), intratumor heterogeneity, and poor antigenicity and immune cell infiltration, contribute to its dismal immunotherapeutic landscape. Cancer vaccines offer one approach to overcoming these barriers, particularly in the resectable or borderline resectable settings, where tumor burden is low and immunosuppression is less pronounced. Various vaccination …

Background and Objectives: Heart failure (HF) represents a major public health challenge worldwide, with rising prevalence, high morbidity and mortality rates, and substantial healthcare costs. Non-invasive telemonitoring has emerged as a promising adjunct in HF management, yet its clinical effectiveness remains unclear. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, we summarize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) between 2004 and 2024 examining the efficacy of non-invasive telemonitoring on mortality, readmission, and quality of life (QoL) in HF. In addition, we characterize the heterogeneity of features of different telemonitoring interventions. Results: In total, 32 RCTs were included, comprising 13,294 participants. While some individual …

Inspired by Richard Feynman’s 1959 lecture and the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage, the field of micro/nanorobots has evolved from science fiction to reality, with significant advancements in biomedical and environmental applications. Despite the rapid progress, the deployment of functional micro/nanorobots remains limited. This review of the technology roadmap identifies key challenges hindering their widespread use, focusing on propulsion mechanisms, fundamental theoretical aspects, collective behavior, material design, and embodied intelligence. We explore the current state of micro/nanorobot technology, with an emphasis on applications in biomedicine, environmental remediation, analytical sensing, and other industrial technological aspects. Additionally, we analyze issues related to …

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPis) are used to treat BRCA-mutated (BRCAm) cancer patients; however, resistance has been observed. Therefore, biomarkers to indicate PARPi resistance and combination therapy to overcome that are urgently needed. We identified a high prevalence of activated FGF receptor 3 (FGFR3) in BRCAm triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells with intrinsic and acquired PARPi resistance. FGFR3 phosphorylated PARP1 at tyrosine 158 (Y158) to recruit BRG1 and prolong chromatin-loaded MRE11, thus promoting homologous recombination (HR) to enhance PARPi resistance. FGFR inhibition prolonged PARP trapping and synergized with PARPi in vitro and in vivo. High-level PARP1 Y158 phosphorylation (p-Y158) positively …

Purpose: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is characterized by frequent mutations in FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3), overexpression of murine double minute 2 (MDM2), and TP53 wild-type (WT). Monotherapies targeting FLT3 frequently result in the development of resistant disease. In this study, we investigated the antileukemic efficacy of co-targeting FLT3 and MDM2 with quizartinib and milademetan (Q/M) in FLT3 internal tandem duplication (FLT3-ITD) AML cell lines, xenograft and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, and a phase I clinical trial.
Experimental design: Preclinical studies used human and murine cell lines carrying FLT3-ITD and/or tyrosine kinase domain mutations, TP53 WT/knockdown, leukemia cell xenograft models, …

Biomass-derived diols are key chemical building blocks for the sustainable chemical manufacturing of textiles and plastics, however their synthesis by a selective, scalable process from holocellulose is challenging. Furfuryl alcohol (FALC) is a potential precursor to 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PeD) through acid-catalysed hydrogenolysis, and hence the impact of oxide support acidity on this reaction over Pt nanoparticles was investigated under batch and continuous flow in toluene. Platinum dispersed over weakly acidic fumed silica and mesoporous SBA-15 supports was almost inactive towards furfuryl alcohol at 150 °C and 10 bar H2 and promoted decarbonylation and hydrodeoxygenation of FALC to furan and methyltetrahydrofuran, respectively. …

Alkylamines, volatile organic nitrogen compounds with low molecular weight, are present in the surface ocean and participate in the marine biogeochemical nitrogen cycle, atmospheric chemistry and cloud formation. Alkylamines have been detected in polar regions, suggesting that these areas constitute emission hotspots of these compounds. However, knowledge of the sea surface distribution patterns and factors modulating alkylamines remain limited due to their high reactivity and low concentrations, which hamper accurate measurements. We investigated the presence and distribution of alkylamines in seawaters around the Antarctic Peninsula and the northern Weddell Sea during the late austral summer and explored their potential links …
