Working Paper No. 73, “Placing-Out”: Dealing With Vagrant Children In 19th Century America, Josephine Cannistra Dec 2022

Working Paper No. 73, “Placing-Out”: Dealing With Vagrant Children In 19th Century America, Josephine Cannistra

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to convince the reader that motivations of 19th century aid societies were not necessarily rooted in the welfare of vagrant children, but rather in the goals of bolstering American agriculture and creating a new generation of farmers out of children that likely would have otherwise proved a direct social and economic burden. While apprenticeships have a long history in the United States, the joining of apprenticeships and indentured labor formed a 19th century system of placing children out into rural homes as contracted workers. This system, as social movement from above, offered economic benefits to farmers and …

Temporal Optical Activity And Chiral Time-Interfaces [Invited], Shixiong Yin, Yao-Ting Wang, Andrea Alù Dec 2022

Temporal Optical Activity And Chiral Time-Interfaces [Invited], Shixiong Yin, Yao-Ting Wang, Andrea Alù

Advanced Science Research Center

Time-interfaces, at which the optical properties of a medium undergo abrupt and spatially uniform changes, have attracted surging interest in optics and wave physics. In this work, we study wave scattering at time-interfaces involving chiral media. Dual to spatial interfaces involving chiral media, we show that a propagating wave is split upon a chiral time-interface into two orthogonal circular polarization waves oscillating at different frequencies. We formulate the temporal scattering boundary-value problem at such time-interfaces, and then demonstrate the effect of temporal optical activity through a chiral time-slab. The effect of material dispersion is also analyzed, highlighting interesting opportunities in …

Grinding All My Life: Nipsey Hussle, Community Health, And Care Ethics, Pyar J. Seth, Carlton K. Harrison, Jasmyn Mackell

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

As John Legend said, “Nipsey was so gifted, so proud of his home, so invested in his community” (Martin, 2019). Though Nipsey Hussle certainly had a lyrical gift, the discourse after his murder remained largely focused on his work as a humanitarian and community activist. Hussle was a staunch advocate for gun control, police abolition, and education equity in Los Angeles and the State of California. Academic research has often neglected the very clear relationship between Hip Hop and health, particularly the underlying theme of improving community health. To our knowledge, Hussle never identified as a community health organizer. Still, …

Jews And Science, Sander L. Gilman Dec 2022

Jews And Science, Sander L. Gilman

The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review

Jews and Science examines the complicated relationship between Jewish identities and the evolving meanings of science throughout the history of Western academic culture. Jews have been not only the agents for study of things Jewish, but also the subject of examination by “scientists” across a range of disciplines, from biology and bioethics to anthropology and genetics. Even the most recent iteration of Jewish studies as an academic discipline—Israel studies—stresses the global cultural, economic, and social impact of Israeli science and medicine.

The 2022 volume of the Casden Institute’s Jewish Role in American Life series tackles a range of issues that …

Infrared Imaging Of Water Condensation On Hydrophobic, Hydrophilic, Superhydrophobic, And Lubricant-Infused Surfaces., Yufan Wu Dec 2022

Infrared Imaging Of Water Condensation On Hydrophobic, Hydrophilic, Superhydrophobic, And Lubricant-Infused Surfaces., Yufan Wu

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

This project studied condensation on a lubricant-infused surface, a hydrophobic surface, a hydrophilic surface, and a superhydrophobic surface, during which the temperature gradient and movements of droplets were recorded. Dropwise condensation behaves differently across samples with different types of coating. On a hydrophilic surface, droplets have a tendency to coalesce and wet the surface. A water film will form as condensation equilibrates. Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces tend not to be wetted by droplets, which stay distinct during condensation. On lubricant-infused surfaces, the high droplet mobility on the lubricant helps the droplets to retain their circular shape and promote long-term stable …

Determination Of Triboelectric Charges On Water Droplets Submerged In Lubricants & Non-Contact Manipulation Of Water Droplets On Lubricant-Infused Surfaces (Lis), Yang Liu

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

The objective of this independent study is to investigate the electric charges on water droplets when submerged in different lubricants including, but not limited to, Krytox 104, 105, and silicon oil, to determine the effects of lubricant oils on the polarity and intensity of electromagnetic charges of the droplets. Such investigation helps interpreting some previous observations in the Weisensee lab and has the potential to enable contactless water droplet manipulation on lubricant-infused surfaces (LISs). On a personal level, the objective of this independent study was to expand my knowledge on triboelectric charging of droplets on LISs and to learn to …

Ceria Defect Engineering Using Thin-Films/Ald And Biological Applications, Udit Kumar Dec 2022

Ceria Defect Engineering Using Thin-Films/Ald And Biological Applications, Udit Kumar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Ceria nanostructures have been utilized for various engineering applications due to their unique defect structure, enabling them to have regenerative redox properties. The ability to shuttle between Ce3+ and Ce4+ oxidation states extends to unique properties. Defect level in ceria is usually expressed in the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. It can be achieved by varying the size(0 to 3D), morphologies, dopants, hetero-nanostructures, and external stimuli. However, it is still a challenge to have precise control over defect structures in the ceria lattice. The current study aims to explore the thin film deposition techniques for cerium oxide using ALD (Atomic layer deposition) and …

Drawing From The Past, Pengpeng Chen Dec 2022

Drawing From The Past, Pengpeng Chen

Theses

Drawing From the Past is a short, 3D animated film that portrays the different thoughts about drawing between two generations and is based on my personal experience. Some art students get less encouragement from their families than other students. In Asian traditional thinking, majoring in art was not the correct career direction, which is correct in that period, because of the economy. Majoring in art means students need to pay more money than other majors. In addition, art is not necessary for some people who worry about food. In the previous period, many people worry about their lives. That means …

Preferential Stiffness And The Crack-Tip Fields Of An Elastic Porous Solid Based On The Density-Dependent Moduli Model, Hyun C. Yoon, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah, Dambaru Bhatta Dec 2022

Preferential Stiffness And The Crack-Tip Fields Of An Elastic Porous Solid Based On The Density-Dependent Moduli Model, Hyun C. Yoon, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah, Dambaru Bhatta

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the preferential stiffness and the crack-tip fields for an elastic porous solid of which material properties are dependent upon the density. Such a description is necessary to describe the failure that can be caused by damaged pores in many porous bodies such as ceramics, concrete and human bones. To that end, we revisit a new class of implicit constitutive relations under the assumption of small deformation. Although the constitutive relationship \textit{appears linear} in both the Cauchy stress and linearized strain, the governing equation bestowed from the balance of linear momentum results in a quasi-linear partial …

Analyzing Patterns Of Complexity In Pre-University L2 English Writing, Zachary M. Lambert Dec 2022

Analyzing Patterns Of Complexity In Pre-University L2 English Writing, Zachary M. Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

The present study involves the creation and analysis of a corpus containing 7747 samples of timed, pre-matriculated L2 English writing from an IEP. The focus of the analysis is on three phrasal complexity measures with time and proficiency as fixed effects, examining their impact on each measure. Results of the analysis suggest that this is true for some phrasal measures, such as nominalizations and attributive adjectives, while others, such as noun-noun phrases, may indicate a lower level of proficiency or lesser allotted writing time. Nominalizations in particular demonstrated a strong relationship with both allotted time and proficiency, further suggesting that …

The Value Of Using Popular Music And Performers On Brand And Message Recall In Television Advertising Jingles, Ahmed Taher, Heba Y. El Badawy Dec 2022

The Value Of Using Popular Music And Performers On Brand And Message Recall In Television Advertising Jingles, Ahmed Taher, Heba Y. El Badawy

Faculty Journal Articles

This study offers insights into two critical decisions in jingle-based advertising. How much more could the producer pay to buy the rights to popular music to add to advertising jingles? And how much more could they pay a popular performer to sing the jingle? Will doing so enhance the brand or message recall to justify the investment? Based on 300 interviews that measured unaided and aided day-after recall of five jingle ads concurrently aired on television, popular music and performers increased unaided and aided recall of brand name and ad message. Compared to the base case, a popular performer can …

Spatial Metaphors In Introductory Statements Of Humanities And Stem Disciplines: A Study Of English And Mechanical Engineering Departments, Olalekan T. Adepoju Dec 2022

Spatial Metaphors In Introductory Statements Of Humanities And Stem Disciplines: A Study Of English And Mechanical Engineering Departments, Olalekan T. Adepoju

Publications and Research

Advances in higher education, specifically in science and technology, have engendered a significant shift of interest from a mainly liberal arts curriculum to STEM-related fields of study, creating a rift in the value systems undergirding the two academic domains. One of the ways the disciplinary disparity is institutionally expressed is through the language used in describing the core values of these disciplines, specifically in the introductory statements of departments. Using the lens of spatial metaphor to consider how the language expresses distinct realities that align with the public perceptions of the disciplines, this paper examines the metaphorical framings in the …

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

Significant growth of gas demand as a source of power generation for domestic use and industries, mainly in the developed countries, has forced the effort to secure the gas supplies located thousands of miles away across the sea as an economical way of gas transportation instead of transporting by pipeline. LNG technology was created as the solution. Natural gas is refrigerated below its boiling point (-160oC to -162oC), known as cryogenic temperature or cryogenic service. Material of Construction (MOC) selection report showed that 304/304L and 316/316L Stainless Steel pipe could withstand and be suitable for this …

Devops: Course Development, James Lee Vanderzouwen Dec 2022

Devops: Course Development, James Lee Vanderzouwen

Masters Projects

DevOps has become somewhat of a buzzword amongst software engineers in the industry. Often developers do not have a dedicated DevOps engineer let alone a DevOps team. Developers benefit when they know what happens between ‘works on my machine’ and production. Making sure those steps make sense and are safe benefits the operations team. From compliance to code review to regression testing, understanding the full SDLC, employing DevOps concepts, and minimizing overhead from dependencies is quickly becoming a pre-requisite for the modern software engineer. This project attempts to bridge the gap between buzzword and best practice by developing a college-level …

The research is categorized as qualitative research. The study offers an interpretation of the object from the theoretical lens provided by Social Practice …

A Synthesis-Based Approach To The Study Of Fe(Ii) Oxidation In Smectites, Robert Joe Kupper Ii Dec 2022

A Synthesis-Based Approach To The Study Of Fe(Ii) Oxidation In Smectites, Robert Joe Kupper Ii

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Smectite clay minerals are present in diverse environments on Earth as a major product of silicate weathering. Although smectites are compositionally varied, they almost always incorporate iron. Iron-bearing smectites are an important component of the biogeochemical iron cycle, serving as a major iron fraction in many soils and altered rocks as well as participating in redox reactions within the surrounding environment. Iron incorporates into smectites in the ferric [Fe(III)] form at the modern, oxygenated surface of Earth but clays forming in anoxic settings instead incorporate ferrous iron [Fe(II)]. Owing to their ubiquity at the surface of the modern Earth, the …

Kernel Estimation Of Spot Volatility And Its Application In Volatility Functional Estimation, Bei Wu Dec 2022

Kernel Estimation Of Spot Volatility And Its Application In Volatility Functional Estimation, Bei Wu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

It\^o semimartingale models for the dynamics of asset returns have been widely studied in financial econometrics. A key component of the model, spot volatility, plays a crucial role in option pricing, portfolio management, and financial risk assessment. In this dissertation, we consider three problems related to the estimation of spot volatility using high-frequency asset returns. We first revisit the problem of estimating the spot volatility of an It\^o semimartingale using a kernel estimator. We prove a Central Limit Theorem with an optimal convergence rate for a general two-sided kernel under quite mild assumptions, which includes leverage effects and jumps of …

Geometry And Dynamics Of Rolling Systems, Bowei Zhao Dec 2022

Geometry And Dynamics Of Rolling Systems, Bowei Zhao

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Billiard systems, broadly speaking, may be regarded as models of mechanical systems in which rigid parts interact through elastic impulsive collision forces. When it is desired or necessary to account for linear/angular momentum exchange in collisions involving a spherical body, a type of billiard system often referred to as no-slip has been used. Previous work indicated that no-slip billiards resemble non-holonomic systems, specifically, systems consisting of a ball rolling on surface. In prior research, such connections were only observed numerically and were restricted to very special surfaces. In this thesis, it is shown that no-slip billiard and rolling systems are …
