Distributed Detection In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Ghazaleh Ardeshiri
Distributed Detection In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Ghazaleh Ardeshiri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
A conventional wireless sensor networks (WSN), consisting of sensors powered by nonrechargeable batteries, has a strictly limited lifetime. Energy harvesting (EH) from the environment is a promising solution to address the energy constraint problem in conventional WSNs, and to render these networks to self-sustainable networks with perpetual lifetimes. In EH-powered WSNs, where sensors are capable of harvesting and storing energy, power control is necessary to balance the rates of energy harvesting and energy consumption for data transmission. In addition, wireless communication channels change randomly in time due to fading. These together prompt the need for developing new power control strategies …

Designing A Supervised Feature Selection Technique For Mixed Attribute Data Analysis, Dong Hyun Jeong, Bong Keun Jeong, Nandi Leslie, Charles Kamhoua, Soo Yeon Ji
Management and Decision Sciences
Identifying optimal features is critical for increasing the overall performance of data classification. This paper introduces a supervised feature selection technique for analyzing mixed attribute data. It measures data classification performances of features with a user-defined performance criterion and determines optimal features to boost the overall data analysis performance. A performance evaluation is managed to highlight the usefulness of the technique with existing feature selection techniques such as analysis of variance test, chi-square test, principal component analysis, and mutual information. Visualization is also utilized to understand the differences in classifying instances with different features. From a comparative performance testing and …
Structure And Morphology Of Photoreactive Monomer–Nanoparticle Mixtures Under Patterned Irradiation, Shreyas Pathreeker
Structure And Morphology Of Photoreactive Monomer–Nanoparticle Mixtures Under Patterned Irradiation, Shreyas Pathreeker
Dissertations - ALL
Establishing processing–structure relationships is central to materials science. In this work, we seek answers to whether morphology can be controlled during Light–Induced Self–Writing (LISW) in polymer composite materials, and if yes, how? LISW is based on the ability of light to undergo divergence–free propagation in photoreactive media due to photopolymerization–induced rise in refractive index of the medium. Notably, LISW in polymeric materials has found use predominantly for the fabrication of optical waveguides but has not been explored in polymer–inorganic mixtures. Using through–mask projection which creates a spatially periodic array of optical beams, this work extends LISW to nanoparticle–monomer mixtures to …

Advanced Deep Learning Methodologies For Deepfake Detection, Aminollah Khormali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The recent advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and an abundance of training samples along with robust computational resources have significantly propelled the field of AI-generated fake information in all kinds, e.g., deepfakes. Deepfakes are among the most sinister types of misinformation, posing large-scale and severe security and privacy risks targeting critical governmental institutions and ordinary people across the world. The fact that deepfakes are AI-generated digital content and not actual events captured by a camera implies that they still can be detected using advanced AI models. Although the deepfake detection task has …

Health Management And Adaptive Control Of Distributed Spacecraft Systems, Tatiana Alejandra Gutierrez Martinez
Health Management And Adaptive Control Of Distributed Spacecraft Systems, Tatiana Alejandra Gutierrez Martinez
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
As the development of challenging missions like on-orbit construction and collaborative inspection that involve multi-spacecraft systems increases, the requirements needed to improve post-failure safety to maintain the mission performance also increases, especially when operating under uncertain conditions. In particular, space missions that involve Distributed Spacecraft Systems (e.g, inspection, repairing, assembling, or deployment of space assets) are susceptible to failures and threats that are detrimental to the overall mission performance. This research applies a distributed Health Management System that uses a bio-inspired mechanism based on the Artificial Immune System coupled with a Support Vector Machine to obtain an optimized health monitoring …
On-Board Artificial Intelligence For Failure Detection And Safe Trajectory Generation, Eduardo Morillo
On-Board Artificial Intelligence For Failure Detection And Safe Trajectory Generation, Eduardo Morillo
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The use of autonomous flight vehicles has recently increased due to their versatility and capability of carrying out different type of missions in a wide range of flight conditions. Adequate commanded trajectory generation and modification, as well as high-performance trajectory tracking control laws have been an essential focus of researchers given that integration into the National Air Space (NAS) is becoming a primary need. However, the operational safety of these systems can be easily affected if abnormal flight conditions are present, thereby compromising the nominal bounds of design of the system's flight envelop and trajectory following. This thesis focuses on …

Nanomaterials (NMs) have been increasingly used in a number of areas, including consumer products and nanomedicine. Target tissue dosimetry is important in the evaluation of safety, efficacy, and potential toxicity of NMs. Current evaluation of NM efficacy and safety involves the time-consuming collection of pharmacokinetic and toxicity data in animals and is usually completed one material at a time. This traditional approach no longer meets the demand of the explosive growth of NM-based products. There is an emerging need to develop methods that can help design safe and effective NMs in an efficient manner. In this review article, we critically …

Specific emitter identification (SEI) is a highly potential technology for physical-layer authentication that is one of the most critical supplements for the upper-layer authentication. SEI is based on radio frequency (RF) features from circuit difference, rather than cryptography. These features are inherent characteristics of hardware circuits, which are difficult to counterfeit. Recently, various deep learning (DL)-based conventional SEI methods have been proposed, and achieved advanced performances. However, these methods are proposed for close-set scenarios with massive RF signal samples for training, and they generally have poor performance under the condition of limited training samples. Thus, we focus on few-shot SEI …

Getting Jumped In Vacationland: The Complicated Rhetoric And Realities Of Assault In A Small Town, Andrew Burns, Kat Albrecht
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) postulates that jurisdictions can deter crime and antisocial behavior via effective use and proper design of the physical environment. When a jurisdiction implements a CPTED strategy, it makes involvement in criminal behavior more difficult, thereby increasing the chance of being caught. Using interviews with 35 active juvenile street taggers from a large metropolitan area in Texas, this research explores whether implementing CPTED strategies deter offenders from engaging in criminal activity. Results suggest physical barriers, natural surveillance, access, and signage serve as deterrents during the target selection process."

Functional Analysis Of Recurrent Non-Coding Variants In Human Melanoma, Paula Maria Godoy
Functional Analysis Of Recurrent Non-Coding Variants In Human Melanoma, Paula Maria Godoy
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Worldwide incidence rates of cutaneous melanoma are increasing, and while survival rates for early stages of melanoma are high, rates drop precipitously for metastatic melanomas or those that are unable to be targeted by currently available treatments. As melanomas have a propensity to quickly metastasize, understanding the contributions of melanoma initiation remains critical for early intervention. Onset of melanoma is characterized most by mutations that stimulate mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling, disrupt DNA damage checkpoints, and trigger mechanisms to bypass senescence through elongation of telomeres. Additionally, in zebrafish melanoma models, the earliest cluster of melanoma-initiating cells activate expression of a …
The Bidirectional Relationship Between The Circadian Clock And Alzheimer’S Disease, Patrick Sheehan
The Bidirectional Relationship Between The Circadian Clock And Alzheimer’S Disease, Patrick Sheehan
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The circadian clock and inflammation have a well-described bidirectional relationship in the peripheral immune system: the circadian clock regulates inflammatory responses, but inflammation also impacts oscillatory gene transcription controlled by the clock. The purpose of this thesis work is to understand if manipulation of the circadian clock can impact Alzheimer’s disease pathology, and if pathology itself can alter the circadian clock and its outputs. Here, I show that astrocyte-specific disruption of the circadian clock via deletion of the clock gene Bmal1 surprisingly decreased intra-neuronal protein pathologies. Further investigation found that deletion of the circadian clock resulted in a transcriptomic profile …
Using Proteomics To Discover New Connections In The Arabidopsis Circadian Clock, Maria Lynn Sorkin
Using Proteomics To Discover New Connections In The Arabidopsis Circadian Clock, Maria Lynn Sorkin
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The plant circadian clock is an endogenous timekeeping mechanism that uses daylength and temperature cycles to synchronize internal physiology with the external environment. Much of our understanding of the clock in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana comes from genetic approaches. In this thesis, I use affinity purification coupled with mass spectrometry (APMS) to identify protein-protein interactions for core clock components on a proteomic scale. I developed and optimized a protocol to perform APMS on a core set of circadian clock proteins: CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED 1 (CCA1), LATE ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL (LHY), PSEUDORESPONSE REGULATOR 5 (PRR5), PRR7, PRR9, TIMING OF CAB 1 …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Next-generation sequencing of DNA and RNA continues to be integrated into pre-clinical and clinical research. However, challenges still remain that impede the translation of findings into an improved understanding of human diseases or clinically actionable alterations. The projects described in this dissertation start with compiling efforts from experts who have identified druggable genes within the human genome, followed by in-depth analyses which characterize the pan-cancer landscape of splice-associated mutations and noncoding, regulatory mutations across multiple subtypes of breast cancer. In Chapters 2 and 3, substantial efforts were made to update the content and the user experience for the drug-gene interaction …
Characterizing Complex Affective Processing Across Age And In Relation To Social Anxiety Symptoms, M. Catalina Camacho
Characterizing Complex Affective Processing Across Age And In Relation To Social Anxiety Symptoms, M. Catalina Camacho
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Humans require a shared understanding of others’ emotions for adaptive social functioning. For instance, if someone tells a joke and another person laughs, we assume the laughing person was happy because we have a shared concept for such positive interactions. Children develop and refine these concepts as they grow up, but the underlying neural processing that supports this development is unknown. Identifying the neurodevelopment underlying emotion processing could provide important insight to emotional disorders. For example, social anxiety is associated differences in the detection and interpretation of negative or neutral emotional cues, but the underlying neurodevelopment of this behavior is …
Cultivating Life: Skill, Sovereignty, And The Nature Of Knowledge, Bradley Jones
Cultivating Life: Skill, Sovereignty, And The Nature Of Knowledge, Bradley Jones
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the cultivation of knowledge, nature, and farmers in U.S. alternative agriculture. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in the Hudson Valley of New York and Central Appalachia, I trace the movement of knowledge across prominent training guides, educational workshops, and apprenticeship programs designed to train the next generation of sustainable farmers. I argue that the knowledge communities of alternative agriculture (strive to) transmit not only technical capacity—the ability to productively farm sustainability—but also holistic ways of understanding the natural world and the human place in it. In doing so practitioners of alternative agriculture gain autonomy from the political-economic and …
Synthesis And Application Of Functional Unimolecular [N]Catenanes In Novel Polymeric Materials, Mark Andrew Nosiglia
Synthesis And Application Of Functional Unimolecular [N]Catenanes In Novel Polymeric Materials, Mark Andrew Nosiglia
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) possess unique architectures and non-traditional degrees of freedom that arise from well-defined topologies that are achieved through precise mechanical bonding. Incorporation of MIMs into materials can thus provide an avenue to discover new and emergent macroscale properties. Here, the synthesis of a phenanthroline-based [2]catenane crosslinker and its incorporation into polyacrylate organogels is described. Specifically, Cu(I) metalation and de-metalation was used as a post-gelation strategy to tune the mechanical properties of a gel by controlling the conformational motions of integrated MIMs. The organogels were prepared via thermally initiated free radical polymerization, and Cu(I) metal was added in …
Systems Level Analysis Of Organelle Biogenesis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kiandokht Panjtan Amiri
Systems Level Analysis Of Organelle Biogenesis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kiandokht Panjtan Amiri
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Eukaryotic cells contain hundreds of subcellular structures that serve different functions to maintain cellular homeostasis. A hallmark of Eukaryotic cells is its compartmentalization into membrane-bound organelles. One of the grand challenges in quantitative cell biology is understanding the precision with which cells assemble and maintain subcellular organelles. Despite identification of numerous molecular factors that regulate organelle sizes we lack insight into the quantitative principles underlying organelle size control. We examine organelle sizes from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and human iPS cells with mathematical theory to show that cells can robustly control average fluctuations in organelle size. By demonstrating that organelle sizes obey …
Interpersonal Emotion Regulation In Current And Remitted Major Depressive Disorder: An Experience Sampling Study, Yunjing Liu
Interpersonal Emotion Regulation In Current And Remitted Major Depressive Disorder: An Experience Sampling Study, Yunjing Liu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) have difficulties regulating emotion on their own. As people also turn to others for help with emotion regulation (i.e., interpersonal emotion regulation [IER]), we examined whether these difficulties extend to IER in current and remitted MDD. We generally expected individuals with current MDD (and remitted MDD to a lesser extent) to utilize IER in distinct ways compared to those with no history of psychiatric disorders (i.e., controls) due to differences in emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal functioning. Using experience sampling, adults with current MDD (n=48), remitted MDD (n=80), and controls (n=87) reported on how frequently …

Quasiparticle And Excitonic Effects In Two-Dimensional Van Der Waals Materials, Linghan Zhu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Since their discovery, low dimensional van der Waals materials have attracted increasing research interests. They serve as ideal platforms to study novel physics in reduced-dimensional systems, and are critical in nowadays’ nanotechnology applications. Due to the reduced dielectric screening in low dimensions, strong excited state properties dictate their electronic, transport and optical properties, the study of which calls for a description of the many-particle interactions beyond the traditional density functional theory. This is where the many-body perturbation theory comes into play. In this thesis, I will present a comprehensive study of the quasiparticle and excitonic properties of a variety of …
Host Development And Microbiota Influences On Norovirus Infection, Elizabeth Alexandra Kennedy
Host Development And Microbiota Influences On Norovirus Infection, Elizabeth Alexandra Kennedy
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The mammalian gut is a complex organ which changes over the course of development and is influenced by the presence of a dense community of gut-resident microbes. Enteric viruses infect the gastrointestinal tract in the context of the commensal microbiota and host immunity. Here, we dissect the influence of host developmental stage and the gut microbiota in norovirus infection. From this work, we determine that murine norovirus (MNoV) infection in early life is restricted by an absence of the target MNoV cell tuft cells and intact interferon (IFN) signaling. However, viral inoculum taken up by non-specific endocytosis in the neonatal …
Effects Of Surface Ligation On Charge Extraction From Wurtzite Cadmium Selenide Quantum Platelets And Quantum Belts, Hailey Meyer
Effects Of Surface Ligation On Charge Extraction From Wurtzite Cadmium Selenide Quantum Platelets And Quantum Belts, Hailey Meyer
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents the synthesis of flat, colloidal wurtzite CdSe quantum platelets and quantum belts for ligand exchange to novel and existing organic and inorganic L-, X-, and Z- type ligands. Use of these ligands in conjunction with the semiconductor nanocrystals allows for examination of their ligand exchange abilities, photoluminescence quenching efficiencies, and charge transfer properties.First, zinc and cadmium dithiocarbamate compounds [M(S2CNR1R2)2] are used as ligands on wurtzite CdSe quantum belts. Complete ligand exchange is achieved when the belts are initially ligated with Cd(oleate)2, a Z-type ligand, prior to the exchange, as opposed to n-octylamine or ammonia, which are both …

Development Of Redox-Responsive Phenazine-Based Foldamers. Acylative Kinetic Resolution Of Hydroxamic Acids, Jingwei Yin
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Two different research directions have been presented in this thesis. The first project is about phenazine-based foldamers as molecular actuators. Researchers have been interested in the design and synthesis of foldamers and molecular actuators for years. We began our exploration by demonstrating that phenazine-1,6-dicarboxamides can function as redox-responsive molecular switches. We then designed and synthesized two generations of phenazine-based interleafed foldamers and studied their stability and redox behaviors under chemical and electrochemical conditions. In the second project, we have developed the first acylative kinetic resolution on hydroxamic acids. Although chiral hydroxamic acids have extensive applications, synthetic methods towards them are …

Listening To First Generation College Students In Engineering: Implications For Libraries & Information Literacy, Emily Dommermuth, Linds W. Roberts
Communications in Information Literacy
First-generation college students (FGCS) in engineering bring a wealth of knowledge to their academic and social experiences in higher education, in contrast to deficit-based narratives that students are underprepared. By listening to FGCS’ own experiences navigating higher education and using information literacy in their project-based work, librarians and educators can better understand students’ funds of knowledge, social capital, and identities, as well as the institutional barriers that must be removed. This paper shares interview findings with (n = 11) FGCS and suggests implications for professional practice that are relevant to information literacy for design, project-based, or practitioner focused disciplines.

Instruction Librarians’ Perceptions Of The Faculty–Librarian Relationship, Lisa Becksford
Instruction Librarians’ Perceptions Of The Faculty–Librarian Relationship, Lisa Becksford
Communications in Information Literacy
This study investigates instruction librarians’ perceptions of their relationships with teaching faculty. Respondents to a survey of U.S. instruction librarians indicated that they tended to agree that their teaching was valued and they had autonomy in what they taught. However, the often one-time nature of library instruction limited their effectiveness as teachers, and respondents felt that faculty did not view librarians’ teaching as equivalent to their own. Respondents also reported a disconnect between their professional identities and others’ viewpoints, describing having their teaching role minimized or misunderstood by others, especially faculty. Additionally, a relationship was found between some aspects of …

Working Paper No. 67, Insights Into Project Cybersyn, Leah Herrera
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that back in the 1970s Chile’s “Project Cybersyn” offered novel approaches and specific technologies that appeared to have benefitted capitalism as a system. The Spanish name, SYNCO served as an acronym for Sistema de Información y Control. President Salvador Allende expected that the attributes associated with Project Cybersyn could assist his efforts in implementing his variant of socialism. Cybersyn consisted of a network (Cybernet), software (Cyberstride), computers, a economic simulator known as CHECO, and a control room (Opsroom.) Cybersyn reached an advanced prototype stage; however, its fate was also tied to the interests of the …
