The Social Ontology Of Psychiatry: Psychiatric Diagnosis As An Ontogenetic, Interpellative Speech Act, Ashton Sorrels Aug 2022

The Social Ontology Of Psychiatry: Psychiatric Diagnosis As An Ontogenetic, Interpellative Speech Act, Ashton Sorrels

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Psychiatry is the study, evaluation, and treatment of mental disorders – disorders that affect the behavior and cognition of individuals and which are associated with underlying dysfunctions in the brain and nervous system. Though psychiatry is a medical and scientific discipline, it also takes place within a social context that modifies its effects, particularly in its application of diagnostic categories to individuals. In this thesis, I argue that, because of this context, psychiatric diagnosis can be modeled as an ontogenetic, interpellative speech act. A speech act is an utterance or sign that constitutes an action through its performance, called an …

Hiding In Plain Sight: Accounting For Rate Heterogeneity In Trait Evolution Models, James Boyko Aug 2022

Hiding In Plain Sight: Accounting For Rate Heterogeneity In Trait Evolution Models, James Boyko

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the last four decades, phylogenetic comparative methods have become the defacto method of analysis for comparative biologists. The availability of high-quality comparative datasets has been matched by an explosion of possible phylogenetic models. In large part, the efforts to increase the realism of phylogenetic comparative methods has been successful as evidenced by their widespread use. To this extensive literature, my contributions are modest. I have focused my dissertation work on two main themes. First, most phenotypic evolution is not independent of other phenotypes. Changes in a particular character may influence changes in another and modeling these characters in isolation …

Hierarchically Structured Photoelectrodes Via Atomic Layer Deposition, Justin Rowan Reed Demoulpied Aug 2022

Hierarchically Structured Photoelectrodes Via Atomic Layer Deposition, Justin Rowan Reed Demoulpied

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the search for a sustainable method to meet increasing energy needs, solar energy emerges as an underutilized, plentiful resource. Solar intermittency and requirements for transportation necessitate storing solar energy in the form of chemical bonds via artificial photosynthesis. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting generates hydrogen fuel from solar energy and water. A semiconducting material that successfully meets the complex requirements for building an industrially scalable PEC device has yet to emerge. This is leading to a reevaluation of materials previously overlooked within PEC research, mainly materials with limitations such as minimal charge carrier mobility and propensity to corrosion under illumination …

Evaluation Of Carbon Isotopic Chemostratigraphy Of The Cedar Mountain Formation Of Utah, Clayton Forster Aug 2022

Evaluation Of Carbon Isotopic Chemostratigraphy Of The Cedar Mountain Formation Of Utah, Clayton Forster

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Lower Cretaceous rocks of Utah preserve the origin of a multitude of dinosaur taxa, spread of angiosperms on the North American continent, and evolution of marsupial and eutherian mammals. However, the timing of deposition of these rocks is not well understood and must be determined to understand climatic controls on these biological events. Estimates of the age of the Cedar Mountain Formation and its constituent members range from Late Jurassic to early Late Cretaceous. Understanding the timing of deposition of the Cedar Mountain Formation is critical to dinosaurian and associated taxa studies as well as paleoclimate reconstructions from within …

What's Care Got To Do With It? Expulsion Practices In Family Child Care, Josephina Paulina Emmrich

Dissertations and Theses

Expulsion of children under five years old in early childhood care and education settings is a problem, especially in family child care programs with the highest expulsion rates across early childhood care and education settings. Recently passed Oregon legislation prohibits expulsion in child care programs (Oregon SB 236, 2021). Influencing outcomes for young children and the family child care providers who work with them. Family child care programs are small businesses primarily run by women who work alone from their homes. Systemic inequities contribute to a lack of support and access to resources for family child care providers. These inequities …

Comparative Assessment Of Human Exposure To Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella Due To The Consumption Of Various Food Products In The United States, Yifan Wu Aug 2022

Comparative Assessment Of Human Exposure To Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella Due To The Consumption Of Various Food Products In The United States, Yifan Wu

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Antibiotic resistance (AR) was increasingly recognized as a global and national problem. Prevention efforts are hampered by a lack of complete understanding of how transmission pathways contribute to human AR exposure. Many reports have indicated the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in foods at retail, suggesting that food consumption, animal-derived foods in particular, can represent a significant source of AR exposure among consumers. The presence of Salmonella, including antibiotic-resistant Salmonella, has been frequently reported in terrestrial animal-derived foods such as meat, poultry, and dairy products, as well as in aquaculture products. Identification of the significant food sources that harbor …

Its Rdna Barcodes Clarify Molecular Diversity Of Aquatic Hyphomycetes, Ricardo Franco-Duarte, Isabel Fernandes, Vladislav Gulis, Fernanda Cássio, Cláudia Pascoal

Biology

Aquatic hyphomycetes are key microbial decomposers of allochthonous organic matter in freshwater ecosystems. Although their importance in carbon flow and food webs in streams is widely recognized, there are still gaps in our understanding of their molecular diversity and distribution patterns. Our study utilized the growing database of ITS rDNA barcodes of aquatic hyphomycetes (1252 sequences) and aimed to (i) produce new barcodes for some lesser-known taxa; (ii) clarify the taxonomic placement of some taxa at the class or order level, based on molecular data; and (iii) provide insights into the biogeographical origins of some taxa. This study increased the …

An Analytical Method To Detect And Quantify Ll-37 In An In Vitro Co-Culture Of Activated Thp-1 Cells And Staphylococcus Aureus, Staphylococcus Epidermidis, And Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Victoria Hunter

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) affect 1.7 million hospitalized patients each year, resulting in over 98,000 deaths and anywhere from $28.4 to $45 billion in treatment costs. Furthermore, it has been established that more than 80% of these infections are caused by biofilms While HCAIs can be bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic, there are between 12 and 17 species cause 80 to 87% of all HCAIs. Among the most commonly isolated microorganisms are Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Thus, biofilms are of importance not only due to their prevalence in HCAIs but also due to the increased antibiotic …

Genomic Analysis And Metabolic Potential Of Myxobacteria, Hanan Albataineh Aug 2022

Genomic Analysis And Metabolic Potential Of Myxobacteria, Hanan Albataineh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Myxobacteria are known for their large genomes that bestow them with a distinct lifestyle that is characterized by fruiting body formation, gliding motility, social interactions, predation, and secondary metabolite production. The powerful combination of whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatics-driven analysis of sequence data has delivered unexpected insights into myxobacterial microbial communities. We applied these two approaches to investigate the chemical space and biosynthetic potential of myxobacteria. Mining different myxobacterial genomes for biosynthetic gene clusters led us to the discovery of a cryptic acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) synthase encoded in the genome of the myxobacterium Archangium gephyra. Bioinformatic analysis of this AHL synthase …

Emotion Regulation In Migraine, Tracy Protti Aug 2022

Emotion Regulation In Migraine, Tracy Protti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Migraine is the third most common medical condition across the globe and a leading cause of years lived with disability due to its considerable burden. The burden is further compounded by the high prevalence of psychological comorbidities and the influence of other psychological factors on functioning. Examinations of migraine within the fear-avoidance model suggest that fear of pain (FOP) promotes maladaptive avoidance and escape behaviors, which contribute to headache-related disability. Limited research demonstrates that those with migraine engage in avoidant emotion-regulation (ER) strategies but has overlooked ER abilities beyond acceptance. The current study aimed to investigate ER in individuals with …

A Methodological Framework For Nanomechanical Characterization Of Soft Biomaterials And Polymers, Sofia E. Arevalo, Donna M. Ebenstein, Lisa A. Pruitt

Faculty Journal Articles

Nanoindentation utilizes a hard indenter probe to deform the sample surface in order to measure local properties, such as indentation modulus and hardness. Initially intended for characterization of elastic and elastic-plastic materials, nanoindentation has more recently been utilized for viscoelastic solids as well as hydrated and soft biological materials. An advantage to nanoindentation is the ability to determine the nano- and microscale properties of materials with complex microstructures as well as those of limited sample dimension. Nanoindentation finds utility in the characterization of structural tissues, hydrogels, polymers and composites. Nevertheless, testing complexities such as adhesion and surface detection exist in …

Exploring Generativity In Young Adults: A Grounded Theory Study, Addison Sellon Aug 2022

Exploring Generativity In Young Adults: A Grounded Theory Study, Addison Sellon

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Generativity expresses one’s level of care and concern for the next generation (Erikson, 1950, 1963). Initially established as a middle adulthood phenomenon, generativity has long been rooted in a middle adulthood framework both conceptually and through its psychometric dimensions. However, many studies have found generativity to be present in other stages of life, particularly young adulthood. This then raised the question of whether the traditional model used for generativity’s manifestation represents young adults’ experiences. This study sought further to explore generativity’s manifestation in a way that is specific to young adults. Applying traditional grounded theory techniques, the present research reanalyzed …

Nonbreeding Season Survival And Habitat Selection Of Northern Bobwhite In Northeastern Colorado, Joseph M. Wolske

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) have experienced range-wide population declines. Recent harvest data from northeastern Colorado suggests bobwhite populations have declined and populations can be sensitive to adult nonbreeding season survival. We monitored 157 bobwhites in northeastern Colorado, on the northern periphery of the species’ range, for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 nonbreeding seasons to estimate nonbreeding season survival and habitat selection. We used known-fate survival models to assess any variation in survival between the winter stages of early-winter, mid-winter, and late-winter, as well as sex, age class, and mass at the time of capture. Survival varied among winter stages, …

Nanoscale Studies Of The Ferroelectric And Electromechanical Properties Of Hafnia-Based Capacitors, Pratyush Buragohain

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The work presented in this dissertation aims to provide nanoscopic insights into the electrical and electromechanical behavior of the recently discovered ferroelectric HfO2 or hafnia-based capacitors. Hafnia-based ferroelectrics are highly promising for technological applications due to compatibility with the existing Si technology. To realize the full potential of hafnia, however, requires comprehensive understanding of its properties. In this regard, this dissertation hopes to bridge a gap between an understanding of the nanoscopic and macroscopic properties of hafnia by performing combined high-resolution piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and pulse switching studies.

More specifically, the dynamics of domain nucleation and wall motion …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Infections caused by antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus are a global concern. This is true in the Middle East, where increasingly resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus haemolyticus strains have been detected. While extensive surveys have revealed the prevalence of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant staphylococci in Europe, Asia, and North America, the population structure of antibiotic-resistant staphylococci recovered from patients and clinical settings in Egypt remains uncharacterized. We performed whole-genome sequencing of 56 S. aureus and 10 S. haemolyticus isolates from Alexandria Main University Hospital; 46 of the S. aureus genomes and all 10 of the S. haemolyticus genomes carry mecA, which confers methicillin …

Ribonucleotide Reductase Subunit Switching In Hepatoblastoma Drug Response And Relapse, Anthony Brown Aug 2022

Ribonucleotide Reductase Subunit Switching In Hepatoblastoma Drug Response And Relapse, Anthony Brown

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Hepatoblastoma is the most common primary liver cancer in infants and young children. Despite being a very rare cancer that accounts for only 0.5-2% if all childhood cancer cases, HB has the largest increase in incidence among childhood cancers in the United States and worldwide. The five-year survival rate of children with the aggressive forms of HB, including those that have developed metastatic or recurrent diseases, is less than 40% due to the lack of effective treatment. We aim to identify targetable mechanisms underlying the progression and drug resistance of high-risk HB. Our recent work on HB mouse and organoid …

Evaluating Molecular Xenomonitoring As A Tool For Lymphatic Filariasis Surveillance In Samoa, 2018–2019, Brady Mcpherson, Helen J. Mayfield, Angus Mclure, Katherine Gass, Take Naseri, Robert Thomsen, Steven A. Williams, Nils Pilotte, Therese Kearns, Patricia M. Graves, Colleen L. Lau

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Molecular xenomonitoring (MX), the detection of filarial DNA in mosquitoes using molecular methods (PCR), is a potentially useful surveillance strategy for lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination programs. Delay in filarial antigen (Ag) clearance post-treatment is a limitation of using human surveys to provide an early indicator of the impact of mass drug administration (MDA), and MX may be more useful in this setting. We compared prevalence of infected mosquitoes pre- and post-MDA (2018 and 2019) in 35 primary sampling units (PSUs) in Samoa, and investigated associations between the presence of PCR-positive mosquitoes and Ag-positive humans. We observed a statistically significant decline …

Allostery (1) is the process through which proteins self-regulate in response to various stimuli. Allosteric interactions occur between nonadjacent spatially distant residues (1), and they are exhibited through the correlated motions (2) and momenta of participating residues. The location of allosteric sites in proteins can be determined experimentally but computational methods to predict the location of allosteric sites are being developed as well (2-4, 10). Experimental and computational methodologies for locating allosteric sites can be used to design specific targeted drug delivery (5-6, 19), but these methods have not yet …
