Rapid global change has increased interest in developing ways to identify suitable refu-gia for species of conservation concern. Correlative and mechanistic species distribu-tion models (SDMs) represent two approaches to generate spatially-explicit estimates of climate vulnerability. Correlative SDMs generate distributions using statistical associations between environmental variables and species presence data. In contrast, mechanistic SDMs use physiological traits and tolerances to identify areas that meet the conditions required for growth, survival and reproduction. Correlative approaches assume modeled environmental variables influence species distributions directly or indirectly; however, the mechanisms underlying these associations are rarely verified empirically. We compared habitat suitability predictions between a …

An Exploration Of Ambulatory Visits And Medications Prescribed For Patients Diagnosed With Lupus Erythematosus In The United States, Salena Marie Preciado
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This dissertation sought to understand the management and treatment of patients diagnosed with lupus erythematosus. To accomplish the objectives of this research, three studies were conducted. First, a systematic literature review was done to assess the current landscape of available clinical guidelines for disease treatment. This research then used the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data from 2006-2016 to explore real-world trends in medications prescribed, comorbidities and chronic conditions associated with lupus. Data is weighted to be nationally representative of the U.S. The third study explored sociological influences or nonclinical factors on the prescribing of medications for patients with lupus. …

Modeling Similarities Among Autism Spectrum Patients Using Word Embeddings On Clinical Notes, Raha Pirzadeh
Computational and Data Sciences (MS) Theses
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in areas of social communication, reciprocal social interaction, restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior and interests, and cognitive or significant delays in early language development. Although we are seeing consistent research being done on understanding the genetic and biological aspects of ASD, diagnosing ASD patients is solely based on behavioral symptoms.
In this thesis, we leverage unsupervised machine learning techniques to better understand ASD patients and the challenging behaviors they present. We used Doc2Vec to create neural word embedding vectors on the clinical notes presented and K-means clustering to group the patients …
Impact Of An Active Learning Intervention On Student Success In An Introductory-Level Biology Course, Cynthia Littlejohn
Impact Of An Active Learning Intervention On Student Success In An Introductory-Level Biology Course, Cynthia Littlejohn
Dissertations
Large enrollment introductory-level courses with high rates of students receiving a D, F, or withdrawing have been identified within higher education as gateway courses. Students not successfully completing these courses are disproportionately represented by historically and continually marginalized populations, such as low-income, poorly represented ethnic groups, and first-generation students. A form of blended learning called the flipped class model is becoming increasingly prevalent in gateway courses. A flipped class design may reduce the cognitive load by allowing time for processing information before class while cooperative learning may result in a collective working memory effect where social interactions may serve to …

Reconstruction And Analysis Of Thermodynamically Constrained Models Reveal Metabolic Responses Of A Deep-Sea Bacterium To Temperature Perturbations, Keith Dufault-Thompson, Chang Nie, Huahua Jian, Fengping Wang, Ying Zhang
Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications
Microbial acclimation to different temperature conditions can involve broad changes in cell composition and metabolic efficiency. A systems-level view of these metabolic responses in nonmesophilic organisms, however, is currently missing. In this study, thermodynamically constrained genome-scale models were applied to simulate the metabolic responses of a deep-sea psychrophilic bacterium, Shewanella psychrophila WP2, under suboptimal (4°C), optimal (15°C), and supraoptimal (20°C) growth temperatures. The models were calibrated with experimentally determined growth rates of WP2. Gibbs free energy change of reactions (DrG9), metabolic fluxes, and metabolite concentrations were predicted using random simulations to characterize temperature-dependent changes in the metabolism. The modeling revealed …

Establishing A Baseline Vegetation Study Of The Monterey Pine Forest Understory In The Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, Natalie Nemeth
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
There is invaluable genetic information in native Monterey pine forests; having unadulterated genetic information is critical for the pine industry as well as conserving native trees in native stands. The Monterey pine forest and its understory are incredibly sensitive and precious ecological systems. Maintaining healthy remnant forests, including understory vegetation, is important for local biodiversity. In 2020, the Monterey pine was listed as an endangered species candidate, yet so little has been published about Monterey pine in California, with outdated reports and a lack of information about the forest floor. Monterey pine is endemic to only three locations on the …

Wetlands are of a considerable environmental value as they provide food and habitat for plants and animals. Several important chemical transformations take place in wetland media, including the conversion of inorganic mercury (Hg) to monomethylmercury (MeHg), a toxic compound with a strong tendency for bioconcentration. Considering the fact that wetlands are hotspots for Hg methylation, we investigated, for the first time, Hg methylation and demethylation rates in an old growth cypress wetland at Sky Lake in the Mississippi Delta. The Sky Lake ecosystem undergoes large-scale water level fluctuations causing alternating periods of oxic and anoxic conditions in the sediment. These …

Financial Incentives And Healthcare: A Critique Of Michael Sandel, Mark Peacock
Financial Incentives And Healthcare: A Critique Of Michael Sandel, Mark Peacock
Journal of Health Ethics
The use of financial incentives in healthcare calls for ethical examination. Michael Sandel's influential work represents such examination and is subject to critical analysis in this paper. Sandel focuses on monetary payments to persuade patients to lose weight, give up smoking etc. but also on the much-discussed case of giving drug addicts money in return for their consent to be sterilized. He offers two separate objections to financial incentives, one based on coercion, the other on corruption. I argue that Sandel's corruption objection to commodification is insufficient to ground the objection he has to financial incentives in healthcare. Whatever strength …

Dual Mechanisms Implemented By Lin-28 For Positive Regulation Of Hbl-1 Are Necessary For Proper Development Of Distinct Tissues In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Madeleine Minutillo
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
In Caenorhabditis elegans, the heterochronic pathway is comprised of a hierarchy of genes that control the proper timing of developmental events. hbl-1 (Hunchback Like-1) encodes an Ikaros family zinc-finger transcription factor that promotes the L2 stage cell fate events of the hypodermis. The downregulation ofhbl-1 is a crucial step for the transition from the L2 to the L3 stage. There are two known processes through which negative regulation of hbl-1 occurs: suppression of hbl-1 expression by 3 let-7 miRNAs through the hbl-1 3’UTR and inhibition of HBL-1 activity by LIN-46. The mechanisms by which hbl-1 is positively regulated have not …

Trauma-Informed Schools: A Quality Improvement Project For A Rural Public-School System., Channing Kay
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Abstract
Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that occur from birth to adulthood and have shown to be significant in increasing the risk for both physical and psychological anomalies (Felitti et al., 1998). ACEs are not siloed to poor communities but were observed in 67% of adults throughout 25 US states (Felitti et al., 1998). Despite the significance found in the literature, few preventative measures are being implemented to protect against these experiences.
Setting: The project seeks to address mental health disparities associated with rural-underserved populations. The school system participating in the project is a rural community school …

Reproduction Of Soybean Cyst Nematode Populations On Field Pennycress, Henbit, And Purple Deadnettle Weed Hosts, Pawan Basnet, Sharon A. Clay, Emmanuel Byamukama
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Several weeds serve as alternative soybean cyst nematode (SCN) hosts. Still, the relative reproductive capacity of SCN HG types (Heterodera glycines type) on weed hosts relative to soybean is not well understood. This study examined the reproduction of three South Dakota endemic SCN populations—PSCN-1 (HG 0), PSCN-2 (HG 2.5.7), and PSCN-3 (HG 7)—on purple deadnettle, field pennycress, and henbit. The Relative Female Index (RFI) was calculated to compare SCN reproduction relative to the susceptible soybean check. Weed hosts, HG types, and their interactions influenced SCN reproduction. Henbit (RFI = 51.8) and purple deadnettle (RFI = 47.6) roots had a similar …

Even though children are natural scientists, many preschools isolate and limit science, which can cause children to miss out on valuable learning experiences and school readiness skills. Additionally, minimizing science at the preschool level fails to set a solid foundation for K-12 science education. In this single case study, we focused on the experiences and daily work of one constructivist-oriented preschool teacher who utilized science-based guided play and emergent curriculum as vehicles for important aspects of preschool learning. Findings demonstrate that with careful planning and intention, science can be utilized as a context for nonscience preschool learning objectives outlined by …

This study looked at a second grade classroom in ASFM consisting of 21 bilingual Mexican students, 11 boys and 10 girls. Perceived social media usage was measured using a survey, academic reading achievement was measured using Fountas and Pinell reading levels and anxiety was measured using the Children’s Test Anxiety Scale (CTAS) by Wren and Benson (2004). Each variable was then analyzed on its own through the use of descriptive statistics and bar graphs; then, each dependent variable was …
A Classification Framework To Assess Ecological, Biogeochemical, And Hydrologic Synchrony And Asynchrony, Kendra E. Kaiser
A Classification Framework To Assess Ecological, Biogeochemical, And Hydrologic Synchrony And Asynchrony, Kendra E. Kaiser
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Ecosystems in the Anthropocene face pressures from multiple, interacting forms of environmental change. These pressures, resulting from land use change, altered hydrologic regimes, and climate change, will likely change the synchrony of ecosystem processes as distinct components of ecosystems are impacted in different ways. However, discipline-specific definitions and ad hoc methods for identifying synchrony and asynchrony have limited broader synthesis of this concept among studies and across disciplines. Drawing on concepts from ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, and biogeochemistry, we offer a unifying definition of synchrony for ecosystem science and propose a classification framework for synchrony and asynchrony of ecosystem processes. This …

Ethical Implications Of Covid-19 Surveillance In Karnataka Using Nancy Kass Framework, Apurva Jain, Lakshya Arora
Journal of Health Ethics
Numerous public health hurdles, including pandemics such as COVID-19, have led to concerns about community health practices in relation, necessitating the application of an ethical perspective. International research ethics guidelines are only used in a restricted range of contexts of public health. As a result, a variety of frameworks have been established to assist ethical analysis of public health concerns. In this study, we have used the Nancy Kass framework for analyzing COVID-19 surveillance in Karnataka state of India, which is a six-step approach that can assist public health practitioners in evaluating the ethical consequences of interventions, policy initiatives, services, …

‘Cockatoo Sands’ is a common name for the Cockatoo Sands family of soils (comprising red to yellowish-red sands, sandy earths, and loamy earths) that have formed from quartz sandstone colluviums in relatively isolated patches throughout the East Kimberley region of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Cockatoo Sands are recognised as potentially suitable for irrigated agriculture because they are generally well drained and not subject to waterlogging or inundation. These characteristics allow them to be cultivated and prepared for planting various crops during the wet and dry seasons of northern Australia.
