Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Considerations For The Criminal Justice System, Gordon B. Worcester Ii Aug 2022

Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Considerations For The Criminal Justice System, Gordon B. Worcester Ii

LC Journal of Special Education

This paper will explore the adaptive components of ID as expressed by Greenspan (2003; 2006)—vulnerability/suggestibility, gullibility, naiveté, one’s desire to please and a cloak of competence. These and other adaptive characteristics provide strong evidence that individuals with ID are more vulnerable than typically developing persons; and these characteristics can be problematic for individuals with ID who may encounter entities from the criminal justice system. Furthermore, existing research indicates that there are a disproportionate number of individuals with ID represented within the criminal justice system. Between 4% and 10% of the prison population are individuals with ID (Petersilia, 2000). In addition, …

Effects Of Journaling To Decrease Repetitive Questioning Of Individuals With High-Functioning Autism, Annette D. Atwater Aug 2022

Effects Of Journaling To Decrease Repetitive Questioning Of Individuals With High-Functioning Autism, Annette D. Atwater

LC Journal of Special Education

One of the characteristics that can stigmatize and isolate an individual with ASD is restricted interests and the often associated repetitive questioning within those interests. Educational best practice utilizes restricted interests in strategies for socialization and transitions by incorporating the restrictive interest into the activity (Boyd, Alter, & Conroy, 2005), but repetitive questioning tends to be a strain on social interaction in school and home environments (Eaves & Ho, 2008; Lounds, Seltzer, Greenberg, & Shattuck, 2007; Seltzer, Krauss, Orsmond, & Vestal, 2001). Unfortunately, there has been relatively little research conducted in the area of treating restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRB) …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Designing cities for thermal comfort is an important priority in a warming and urbanizing world. As temperatures in cities continue to break extreme heat records, it is necessary to develop and test new approaches capable of tracking human thermal sensations influenced by microclimate conditions, complex urban geometries, and individual charac-teristics in dynamic settings. Thermal walks are a promising novel research method to address this gap. During a ther-mal walk in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, we examined relationships between the built environment, microclimate, and subjective thermal judgments across a downtown city neighborhood slated for redevelopment. Subjects equipped with GPS devices participated in …

Imprints: The Marks We Make, Patricia Botts

Graduate Theses

When walking throughout a cemetery, you may notice the small dash on a tombstone between the year of someone’s birth and their death. Have you ever given thought as to how a tiny line can represent so much? Even a small mark, such as the dash, can represent volumes in the entirety of a person’s life and the imprint they leave on those around them. In my work, I use various types of line as symbols associated with representations of life. I am most interested in lines as visual representation of physical and psychological wounds, both newly created and those …

Indoloquinoline-Mediated Targeted Downregulation Of Kras Through Selective Stabilization Of The Mid-Promoter G-Quadruplex Structure, Alexandra Maria Psaras, Rhianna K. Carty, Jared T. Miller, L. Nathan Tumey

Faculty and Student Publications

KRAS is a well-validated anti-cancer therapeutic target, whose transcriptional downregulation has been demonstrated to be lethal to tumor cells with aberrant KRAS signaling. G-quadruplexes (G4s) are non-canonical nucleic acid structures that mediate central dogmatic events, such as DNA repair, telomere elongation, transcription and splicing events. G4s are attractive drug targets, as they are more globular than B-DNA, enabling more selective gene interactions. Moreover, their genomic prevalence is increased in oncogenic promoters, their formation is increased in human cancers, and they can be modulated with small molecules or targeted nucleic acids. The putative formation of multiple G4s has been described in …

Open Access Publishing Biases Oer, Chelsee Dickson, Christina Holm

Open Educational Resource Collection

Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated.

Knowing that the peer review process can introduce issues of bias, what then of other aspects of the publishing cycle? For example, what of the subvention …

Longitudinal Measurement Invariance Of Communication Apprehension Scores Among First-Year Undergraduates, Tonya Calloway Aug 2022

Longitudinal Measurement Invariance Of Communication Apprehension Scores Among First-Year Undergraduates, Tonya Calloway

Doctoral Dissertations

Testing measurement invariance (MI) is the most practical question to address in any analysis that involves multiple time points and/or groups. MI is a prerequisite to evaluate if an observed true change over time has occurred after an intervention. Communication Apprehension is one of the most widely studied constructs in the field of communication but has not been analyzed for MI. Leaders governing higher education institutions have implemented Quality Enhancement Plans (QEP) that strategically address workforce needs such intervention programs to improve student communication competency. Despite intervention efforts, industry still indicates a high demand for a workforce with communication competency. …

Improving Trauma-Informed Education And Parenting For Resource Parents At A Foster Care Agency., Courtney Albers Aug 2022

Improving Trauma-Informed Education And Parenting For Resource Parents At A Foster Care Agency., Courtney Albers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

675,000 children nationwide were involved with the foster care system in 2019, and nearly all children within the foster care system are actively suffering from the effects of trauma. Resource parent trauma-informed trainings, such as Resource Parenting Curriculum (RPC) developed by The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, are associated with improved parental perceptions towards trauma-informed care, improved child outcomes, and placement stability. Foster care agencies have trauma-informed state-based curriculum, but it does not meet the needs of resource parents, specifically those caring for children with developmental delays or disorders. The project was implemented at a therapeutic foster care agency for …

The field of computational drug discovery and development has grown, with the aid of new computational tools for novel molecule discovery. In specific, generative deep learning models have excelled as tools to aid in navigating the large space of known molecules and in the creation of new molecules. These models are fed various representations of molecules as inputs and learn to perform a variety of things, such as the optimization of these molecules towards a targeted property. Ultimately, these generative learning models allow us to build bridges between chemical and continuous spaces to understand the compromise between invoking small incremental …

Rock Climbing And Conservation In Land Management: Can They Coexist?, Marissa Heller Aug 2022

Rock Climbing And Conservation In Land Management: Can They Coexist?, Marissa Heller

Geography ETDs

As participation in outdoor recreation is growing in the U.S., a dilemma is presented for conservation planners and land area managers who must manage the increasing demand for recreation while simultaneously working to protect species. Rock climbers and other outdoor recreationalists have asserted that a relationship exists between recreation and the conservation of public lands. However, mounting evidence suggests that rock climbing continues to cause a multitude of negative impacts to ecosystems. Here, I investigate the extent to which land management practices allow for rock climbing and conservation to coexist, and how it is that well developed plans protect ecologically …

Lgbtq Youth And The Promise Of The Kennedy Quartet, Michael J. Higdon Aug 2022

Lgbtq Youth And The Promise Of The Kennedy Quartet, Michael J. Higdon

Scholarly Works

The Supreme Court has only issued four opinions endorsing the constitutional rights of sexual minorities, each of them authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy. These four cases, which this article refers to collectively as “the Kennedy Quartet,” have done much to advance the equality of LGBTQ adults in the United States. The question remains, however, as to what extent those cases likewise protect LGBTQ children. Far from simply being an academic question, this issue has taken on increased urgency as legislators in a number of states—thwarted by the Kennedy Quartet in their ability to target LGBTQ adults—have turned their attentions to …

Nematodes are the most abundant and diverse animals on the planet but lack representation in biodiversity research. This presents a problem for studying nematode diversity, particularly when molecular tools (i.e., barcoding and metabarcoding) rely on well-populated and curated reference databases, which are absent for nematodes. To improve molecular identification and the assessment of nematode diversity, we created and curated an 18S rRNA database specific to nematodes (18S-NemaBase) using sequences sourced from the most recent publicly available 18S rRNA SILVA v138 database. As part of the curation process, taxonomic strings were standardized to contain a fixed number of taxonomic ranks relevant …
