Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Fundamental to the synthesis of enantioenriched chiral molecules is the ability to assign absolute configuration at each stereogenic center, and to determine the enantiomeric excess for each compound. While determination of enantiomeric excess and absolute configuration is often considered routine in many facets of asymmetric synthesis, the same determinations for enantioisotopomers remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report the first highly enantioselective metal-catalyzed synthesis of enantioisotopomers that are chiral by virtue of deuterium substitution along with the first general spectroscopic technique for assignment of the absolute configuration and quantitative determination of the enantiomeric excess of isotopically chiral molecules. Chiral tag …

An Ecological And Physiological Assessment Of Feather Mite-Bird Symbioses, Kevin James Krajcir
An Ecological And Physiological Assessment Of Feather Mite-Bird Symbioses, Kevin James Krajcir
Student Theses and Dissertations
Feather mites are ectosymbiotic arthropods that reside primarily on the wing and tail feathers of most birds. Despite our growing understanding of feather mite biology, previous studies of the nature of the feather mite-avian host relationship report mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism. Such inconsistencies are likely due to narrow study designs that fail to capture the possibility of context dependency in this interaction. To provide some clarity surrounding the nature of this symbiotic system, we explored how geographical, climatic, and ecological contexts relate to variation in feather mite abundance and how that abundance, consequently, associates with multiple metrics of host condition …
The Development Of The Discrimination Against Asexuality (Daa) Scale, Madelynn Quinn Darby
The Development Of The Discrimination Against Asexuality (Daa) Scale, Madelynn Quinn Darby
Student Theses and Dissertations
Though asexuality has had a place in the empirical literature for 20 years, it has rarely been studied empirically. The study of discrimination towards asexuals has been studied even less, in part, due to few existing relevant measures. To address the gap in measurement, a scale was created to measure discriminatory attitudes towards asexuals. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to determine the model of the measure. A six-factor model was discovered: Inhuman View, Social Relationships, Disorder View, LGBT+ Community, Transient View, and Romantic Relationships. The DAA was found to have very strong reliability …
Effects Of Pesticides On Red Rot Of Sugarcane, Kezia Cristina Da Silva Reis
Effects Of Pesticides On Red Rot Of Sugarcane, Kezia Cristina Da Silva Reis
LSU Master's Theses
Red rot disease of sugarcane, caused by Colletotrichum falcatum, can be an important constraint to crop production. In Louisiana, red rot primarily affects seed-cane and is more severe when billets (stalk sections) are planted rather than whole-stalks. At planting application of seed-treatment chemicals, particularly a combination of fungicide and thiamethoxam insecticide, has improved stand establishment and increased yields in billet plantings in Louisiana. However, information has been lacking on the effect of the treatments on disease development. Greenhouse experiments were conducted in 2020 and 2021 to evaluate stalk rot symptom severity and initial plant growth for billets dip-treated with …
Virtual Reality Simulation's Influence On Nursing Students' Anxiety And Communication Skills With Anxious Patients, Tanae A. Traister
Virtual Reality Simulation's Influence On Nursing Students' Anxiety And Communication Skills With Anxious Patients, Tanae A. Traister
Dissertations
The incidence of medical-surgical patients with a secondary anxiety diagnosis is increasing, and nurses' feelings of inadequacy in communicating with anxious patients have hindered the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship, negatively impacting patient outcomes. Simulation methods such as high fidelity simulation and standardized patients have decreased nursing students' anxiety levels in caring for anxious patients. However, they face maintenance costs, availability, and consistency barriers. Full immersion virtual reality simulation has demonstrated
success in nonhealthcare and medical education but is limited in nursing education. Nursing students from an associate and bachelor's degree nursing program participated in a full immersion virtual reality simulation anxious …
Air Quality Impacts From Mineral Dust, Fireworks, And Urban Pollution Revealed By Trace Element Chemistry And Strontium Isotopes Ratios In The Wasatch Front, Utah, Usa, Micah J. Marcy
Theses and Dissertations
Airborne particulate matter (PM) in urban areas is derived from a combination of natural and anthropogenic sources. To identify PM sources and their effects on air quality, we collected PM using active filter samplers over a two-year period in the urban Wasatch Front, northern Utah, an area affected by multiple pollution sources. Filters from active samplers and other PM samples were analyzed for major and trace element concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr ratios. We identified wind-blown mineral dust from dry lake beds, winter inversions, and fireworks as primary PM sources affecting air quality in the Wasatch Front. Dust contributes Al, Be, Ca, …

Foul Play: How Racism In The Ncaa Contributes To The Mental Health And Academic Performance Of College Athletes Of Color, Kellie Courtney
Student Theses
While past research indicates that student-athletes of color are vulnerable to experiencing racial discrimination, it is unclear how these experiences of discrimination affect their mental health and academic performance. The purpose of this study was to understand how racial discrimination (in both academic and athletic settings) is associated with the mental health and academic performances of student-athletes of color. To recruit participants, the survey link was posted on social media platforms and was also emailed to student-athletes attending City Universities of New York (CUNYs). Consistent with previous research, the current study found that racism in both academic and athletic settings …

In terrestrial ecosystems, vegetation is sensitive to climate change and human activities. Its spatial-temporal changes also affect the ecological and social environment. In this paper, we considered the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region to study the spatio-temporal vegetation patterns. The detailed analysis of a moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data were carried out through the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Our results show a slow and tortuous upward trend in the average leaf area index (LAI) in the study region for the periods 2001–2020. Specifically, Beijing had the highest LAI value, with an average of 1.64 over twenty years, followed by Hebei (1.30) and …

Navigating Evidence And Knowledge Equity, J. Nick Fisk
Exploring How We Teach
- Graduate instructors are awkwardly situated in the academy, which shapes their agency in teaching effectively and developing their own teaching practice.
- Evidence is a potentially fraught construct that is nonetheless necessary and accepted in the academy and can be leveraged in lieu of the often-wanting personal authority of graduate instructors to advocate better teaching practices while also developing themselves professionally.
- Principles of knowledge equity, which is foundationed on a pluralistic epistemological approach to knowledge building, can guide graduate instructors to consider a more expansive view and contextual approach to evidence to better serve students.
- Adoption of evidence-supported practices in the …

Role Of Ligand Architecture On Collective Cell Invasion, Amrit Bagchi
Role Of Ligand Architecture On Collective Cell Invasion, Amrit Bagchi
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Epithelial cell collectives utilize extra-cellular matrix (ECM) fibers to undergo collective migration critical in regeneration, repair and cancer metastasis. However, very little is known about the various factors which determine the ability of cellular collectives to utilize ECM fibers to undergo these critical processes in-vivo. First part of the dissertation focusses on understanding how cell collectives exploit specific properties, like stiffness and fiber length to undergo collective streaming. It is also unclear how cellular forces, cell-cell adhesion, and velocities are coordinated within streams. To independently tune stiffness and collagen fiber length, we developed new hydrogels and discovered invasion-like streaming of …

Smart Sensing And Clinical Predictions With Wearables: From Physiological Signals To Mental Health, Ruixuan Dai
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Wearable devices such as smartwatches and wristbands are gaining adoption. Recent advances in technology in wearables enable remote health monitoring. However, there are challenges in exploiting wearables in healthcare applications. First, sensor readings from wearables are vulnerable to motion and noise artifacts. A robust pipeline is needed to extract reliable measurements from noisy signals. Second, while wearables support an increasing number of sensing modalities, there is a significant need to generate more clinically meaningful measurements with wearables. Finally, to incorporate wearables into clinical practice, we need to establish the link between wearable measurements and clinical outcomes, thus supporting clinical decisions. …
Measuring G Protein Activation With Spectrally Resolved Fluorescence Fluctuation Spectroscopy, Daniel Foust
Measuring G Protein Activation With Spectrally Resolved Fluorescence Fluctuation Spectroscopy, Daniel Foust
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy (FFS) is comprised of a set of statistical techniques used to learn information about fluorescence particles by analyzing intensity fluctuations in signals detected from a fluorescence spectrometer or microscope. In biological contexts, FFS is commonly used to quantify the concentrations, molecular brightnesses, and transport properties (e.g. diffusion coefficients) of labeled biomolecules. In particular, the molecular brightness parameter is valuable because it can be used to quantify oligomerization of biomolecules. Therefore, FFS has emerged as an attractive tool for measuring protein-protein interactions in live cells. This dissertation describes the development of image-based, multicolor FFS techniques. Image-based FFS is …

Photochemical Formation Mechanisms And Applications Of Mn Oxide Nanomaterials, Zhenwei Gao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Manganese (Mn) oxides are ubiquitous in aquatic and terrestrial environments, and the rich redox chemistry of manganese is of interest in engineered systems, such as batteries and water oxidation catalysts. Mn oxides have large surface areas and are highly active in adsorption and redox reactions. Our research group recently reported photochemically-assisted abiotic inorganic oxidation of Mn2+(aq) to δ-MnO2 nanosheets in the presence of nitrate and without a microorganism, demonstrating that abiotic Mn oxidation processes are not negligible. My doctoral work focuses on investigating the effects of various aquatic chemistry parameters, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), peroxyl radical (ROO•), reactive halogen …

Nano-Bio Interactions: Implications And Applications, Anushree Ghosh
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Rapid expansion of technology development at the nanoscale has underpinned a promising industry. Towards this, there remain significant information gaps which are critical with regard to decision making processes and ultimate industrial sustainability. From an implication point of view, understanding how common biological macromolecules, including glycolipids and/or biopolymers produced by bacteria and fungi, which are ubiquitous in the environment, is fundamental to predicting the behavior of released/produced nanoparticles. Conversely, other bio-based tailored macromolecules, including mussel foot protein (MFP), have significant potential as functional material coatings for advanced applications. This PhD thesis is focused on interfacial processes related to superparamagnetic iron oxide …
Understanding Control Of Metabolite Dynamics And Heterogeneity, Christopher John Hartline
Understanding Control Of Metabolite Dynamics And Heterogeneity, Christopher John Hartline
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Microbes live in complex and continually changing environments. Rapid shifts in nutrient availability are a common challenge for microbes, and cause changes in intracellular metabolite levels. Microbial response to dynamic environments requires coordination of multiple levels of cellular machinery including gene expression and metabolite concentrations. This coordination is achieved through metabolic control systems, which sense metabolite concentrations and direct cellular activity in response. Several reoccurring control architectures are found throughout diverse metabolic systems, which suggests underlying evolutionary advantages for using these control systems to coordinate metabolism. One common, yet understudied, control architecture is the positive feedback metabolite uptake loop, which …

Plasmonic Nanomaterials-Based Point-Of-Care Biosensors, Rohit Gupta
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Point-of-care (POC) biosensors, although rapid and easy-to-use, are orders magnitude less sensitive than laboratory-based tests. Further they are plagued by poor stability of recognition element thus limiting its widespread applicability in resource-limited settings. Therefore, there is a critical need for realizing stable POC biosensors with sensitivity comparable to gold-standard laboratory-based tests. This challenge constitutes the fundamental basis of this dissertation work– to expand access to quality and accurate biodiagnostic tools. At the heart of these solutions lies plasmonic nanoparticles which exhibit unique optical properties which are attractive for label-free and labelled biosensors.Firstly, we improve the stability and applicability of label-free …
Modeling The Effects Of Mechanical Loading On Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Pathogenesis In Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Derived Micro Heart Muscle, Jingxuan Guo
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Sudden cardiac death in the young is devastating. Advances in genetics have associated mutations in the contractile sarcomere apparatus of cardiomyocytes with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most frequent cause of sudden cardiac death in the young. Currently, it is challenging to predict genotype-phenotype relationships in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy due to its incomplete disease penetrance. For example, different patients from the same family with identical genomic variants develop different symptoms. Non-genetic, environmental factors such as blood pressure are critical in heart function and disease. Therefore, understanding how mechanical factors contribute to phenotypes in diseases like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is critical for developing effective therapeutics. …
Tfa Inference: Using Mathematical Modeling Of Gene Expression Data To Infer The Activity Of Transcription Factors, Cynthia Ma
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Transcription factors (TFs) are a set of proteins that play a key role in the information processing system that enables a cell to respond to changes in internal and external state. By binding near a gene in a cell’s DNA, a TF can influence that gene’s expression level, triggering the appropriate increase or decrease in production levels of proteins that are needed to handle stressors like a change in nutrient availability or damage to the cell’s internal structures. Transcription factor activity (TFA) is a measure of how much effect a TF has on its target genes in a given sample …
