Assessing Changes In Freshwater And Marine Food Web Connections Following Restoration On The Penobscot River, Maine, Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Matthew Brewer Ms
Student Scholarship
Oiadromous fish provide ecological subsidies to freshwater and marine food
webs, connecting both ecosystems. A main goal of the Penobscot River Restoration
Project was to increase connectivity between food webs by removing two mainstem
dams, improving fish passage, and reintroducing river herring through stocking.
Oiadromous fish now reach historic spawning habitat that was not accessible for
centuries. As a result, river herring runs in the Penobscot River increased from
2,336 fish in 2009 to over 3 million fish by 2018. To assess food web connectivity in
the Penobscot watershed, I analyzed stable isotopes from samples collected before
(2009-2010) and after …

Polygenic risk scores (PRS) are commonly used to quantify the inherited susceptibility for a trait, yet they fail to account for non-linear and interaction effects between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We address this via a machine learning approach, validated in nine complex phenotypes in a multi-ancestry population. We use an ensemble method of SNP selection followed by gradient boosted trees (XGBoost) to allow for non-linearities and interaction effects. We compare our results to the standard, linear PRS model developed using PRSice, LDpred2, and lassosum2. Combining a PRS as a feature in an XGBoost model results in a relative increase in …

Examining The Gay Panic Defense With An Experimental Design, Annika I. Wurm
Examining The Gay Panic Defense With An Experimental Design, Annika I. Wurm
Psychology and Counseling Theses
The gay panic defense (GPD) is a type of provocation defense used in criminal trials for the purpose of mitigating a defendant’s culpability to a jury. The current study utilized chi-square tests and logistic regression to investigate the effects of the GPD on jury decision-making and to assess potential associations of personal characteristics of jurors on verdict selection. Contrary to hypotheses, testing resulted in null findings. Limitations, as well as study strengths, are discussed. Findings suggest that methodology and case details may be pertinent in the empirical investigation of the GPD.
Impacts Of Drugs On Neurotransmission, Wenrong He
Impacts Of Drugs On Neurotransmission, Wenrong He
Theses
The most sophisticated and mysterious human organ is the brain. The human brain is made up of billions of neurons, which are working nonstop to send and receive messages to regulate the body’s basic functions. Neurons communicate by releasing neurotransmitters from a sending neuron into the synapse, then a receiving neuron picks up the signals on its receptors from neurotransmitters. Drugs can interfere with the communication between neurons in the brain. They can affect the way people feel, react or behave. Drug use impacts the brain’s neuronal circuits which may lead to inflexible behaviors, lack of self-control, and compulsive drug …

Antidepressants have previously been associated with better outcomes in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, but their effect on clinical deterioration among ambulatory patients has not been fully explored. The objective of this study was to assess whether antidepressant exposure was associated with reduced emergency department (ED) or hospital visits among ambulatory patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. This retrospective cohort study included adult patients (N = 25 034) with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test performed in a non-hospital setting. Logistic regression analyses tested associations between home use of antidepressant medications and a composite outcome of ED visitation or hospital admission within 30 days. Secondary …

School of Biomedical Sciences
Vitamin D deficiency is a global disorder associated with several chronic illnesses including dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. The impact of this association with both dyslipidemia and vitamin D deficiency on metabolomics profile is not yet fully understood. This study analyses the metabolomics and lipidomic signatures in relation to vitamin D status and dyslipidemia. Metabolomics data were collected from Qatar Biobank database and categorized into four groups based on vitamin D and dyslipidemia status. Metabolomics multivariate analysis was performed using the orthogonal partial least square discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) whilst linear models were used to assess the per-metabolite association with each of …
Assessing The Current State Of Louisiana's Crawfish Fishery: Trends And Challenges In Wild Capture And Aquaculture, Mahala G. Gambill
Assessing The Current State Of Louisiana's Crawfish Fishery: Trends And Challenges In Wild Capture And Aquaculture, Mahala G. Gambill
LSU Master's Theses
Crawfish are found throughout the southern U.S.; however, Louisiana is by far the largest producer. The state’s industry includes harvesting wild crawfish from natural habitats such as bayous, swamps, and marshes, and crawfish reared in outdoor ponds. Although commercial harvest records are available, characterization of Louisiana’s wild capture crawfish fishery in recent years is undocumented, and analysis of environmental variables that could be correlated with annual harvest totals have not yet been explored. Using trip ticket data from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, I characterized monthly and annual trends within Louisiana basins to assess changes in crawfish harvest …
Understanding Community Assembly Processes Of Foundation Species Within Hyper-Diverse Ecosystems, Carrie Barker
Understanding Community Assembly Processes Of Foundation Species Within Hyper-Diverse Ecosystems, Carrie Barker
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Foundation species provide the structure for other species and can significantly affect the composition and overall diversity within a community. Multiple foundation species can coexist within a community, and each can have differential impacts. My dissertation aims to understand the effects different foundation species have on diversity and the community assembly processes responsible for structuring diversity within their respective communities.
First, I quantified the diversity of groundcover plants within the prominent foundation species, bunchgrasses, (dominated by Shizachyrium scoparium) compared to groundcover plant diversity within patches of the alternative foundation species bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) and gallberry ( …

Plant And Animal Body-Part Terms In Shiwulu Grammar: Classification, Nominalization, And Incorporation, Pilar M. Valenzuela
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"The goal of the present study is to offer an account of the principal constructions containing body-part terms in Shiwilu. These involve inanimate classifiers, three lexical nominalizers (instrumental, habitual agent, and resultative), and incorporated nouns and classifiers. While articles have previously been written addressing the Shiwilu system of classifiers and nominal incorporation (Valenzuela 2016, 2019, to appear), this chapter focuses on the role that body-part terms play in the grammar of the language."

Niche Overlap In Sympatric Rocio (Teleostei: Cichlidae) Of Guatemala, Cesar Estuardo Fuentes Montejo
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Rocio is a small genus of Neotropical freshwater fishes that is distributed in Atlantic drainages of northern Middle America. Two species in the genus exhibit sympatry in the Río Dulce basin (in Izabal, Guatemala), where one species is endemic (R. spinosissima), while the other only includes this area as part of a larger geographic range (R. octofasciata). Unfortunately, the ecology of these species has been poorly studied. This study sought to determine the ecological and morphological differences between these two closely related sympatric freshwater fishes. We hypothesized that R. octofasciata would exhibit greater ecological and morphological …

Relationship Building In E-Negotiation: Dyadic Effects On Subjective Negotiation Outcomes, Mounica Reddy
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
E-negotiation is a critical activity that is becoming a new reality (Sokolova et al., 2006), however, the e-negotiation environment lends itself to fewer informative cues than the face-to-face environment. The ability to maintain relationships with parties and negotiate with them in the future increases the negotiator’s bargaining power and could be important beyond economic outcomes (Curhan & Brown, 2011). This study investigates the link between relationship-building and subjective values in negotiation, and how the negotiation medium may change this relationship. Subjective values of rapport, trustworthiness, and interest in future interaction were predicted to both differ by e-negotiation and face-to-face negotiation …

Seasonality Of Precipitation In The Southwestern United States During The Late Pleistocene Inferred From Stable Isotopes In Herbivore Tooth Enamel, Matthew J. Kohn, Kathleen B. Springer, Jeffrey S. Pigati, Linda M. Reynard, Amanda E. Drewicz, Justin Crevier, Eric Scott
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The late Pleistocene was a climatically dynamic period, with abrupt shifts between cool-wet and warmdry conditions. Increased effective precipitation supported large pluvial lakes and long-lived spring ecosystems in valleys and basins throughout the western and southwestern U.S., but the source and seasonality of the increased precipitation are debated. Increases in the proportions of C4/(C4+ C3) grasses in the diets of large grazers have been ascribed both to increases in summer precipitation and lower atmospheric CO2 levels. Here we present stable carbon and oxygen isotope data from tooth enamel of late Pleistocene herbivores recovered …

Temperature Effects On The Development Of The Axial Skeleton And Body Shape In Astyanax Mexicanus (Teleostei: Characidae), Joseph David Forberg
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Humans are causing large-scale changes in environmental conditions across the planet including in temperature. Changes in the environmental conditions can lead to phenotypic changes in ectotherms that affect adaptively important traits like body shape and the axial skeleton. Previous studies have shown that temperature changes during development significantly affects body shape and vertebral number in the Mexican tetra Astyanax mexicanus. How these changes arise early in development is not clear. In this study, I examine how changes in developmental temperature affect body shape in larval and juvenile fish, the order of ossification of elements of the axial skeleton, the size …
Characterization Of A Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia Bacteriophage, Edward Eshoo
Characterization Of A Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia Bacteriophage, Edward Eshoo
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a ubiquitous Gram-negative, multidrug resistant, opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes various infections in humans. Recently, the use of bacteriophages as therapeutic agents, has gained interest as an alternative to traditional antibiotics. This thesis describes the isolation, purification, and characterization of S. maltophilia bacteriophage Bfi2 and discusses its activity against related, and often co-isolated, bacterial pathogens. Amplification of the phage resulted in clear, well-defined plaques and a titer of 1.73 ± 0.38 x 1011 PFU/ml. Bfi2 demonstrated the ability to lyse 55% of the S. maltophilia strains tested, suggesting that it has a moderate host range. However, the …
A Longitudinal Analysis Of The Impact Of Daily Hassles, Life Stressors, And Chronic Medical Conditions On Salivary Alpha Amylase In Young Adults, Anjana Jagpal
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Young adulthood is a critical point of transition accompanied by a number of different stressors. Exposure to a stressor activates two systems – the hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA) and sympathetic adrenal medullary (SAM) system. Research has primarily examined HPA axis and its corresponding stress hormone, salivary cortisol with little attention on sympathetic nervous system (SNS) markers. However, emerging research has proposed salivary alpha amylase (sAA) as a potential surrogate for SNS activity. The existing neuroendocrine research on sAA has largely focused on acute stressors and it is important to understand how sAA behaves in response to different levels of stressors …

Black Adolescent Self-Perceptions: The Roles Of Ethnic Identity And Stress Exposure, Kailyn Bare
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The effects of stressors during youth and adolescence have long been investigated as powerful experiences affecting adjustment and well-being. Stressful life events predict a range of psychological and physical outcomes, but their impact on adolescent self-perception has yet to be studied thoroughly. Adolescent strengths, such as ethnic identity, may serve as protection from threats and warrant exploration. Using resilience theory (Fergus & Zimmerman, 2005) and a stressor model of adolescent development (Grant et al., 2003), this study examines the influence of ethnic identity in the relationship between youth stressful experiences and different types of self-perception (social competence, behavioral conduct, and …
