Cooking activities in the traditional kitchen or in the domestic area—which are supposed to be the domain of women—are interpreted as an obligation as well as a form of a woman’s service to her family, spouse, children, and even other people who are close to her life. In other words, cooking in the domestic area is an undefined job. Regardless of the fact, when cooking shifted to the public space, it turned into a professional job, a work area which was later known as the professional kitchen. People who work in a professional kitchen are given the title professional chef. …

Atg23 Dimerization Drives Membrane Tethering In Yeast Autophagy, Kelsie A. Leary Aug 2022

Atg23 Dimerization Drives Membrane Tethering In Yeast Autophagy, Kelsie A. Leary

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

All cells undergo stress throughout their lifetime, including single-celled bacterium or a single cell from a plant or a human. This stress can result in damage that can be detrimental to the cell if it is not removed. Thus, healthy cells require a tight balance between clearing damaged cellular material and its replenishment. Autophagy is a highly conserved process evolved by cells to encapsulate damaged material in a double membrane vesicle for its delivery to the lysosome (in mammals) or the vacuole (in yeast). Upon lysosomal delivery, the contents are degraded and returned to the cell for reuse. Autophagy can …

The Business Leader's Vocation To Social Purpose And Sustainability, Aliza D. Racelis Aug 2022

The Business Leader's Vocation To Social Purpose And Sustainability, Aliza D. Racelis

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The document “The Vocation of the Business Leader: A Reflection” (VBL) facilitates the understanding of the Christian leader’s role in these times characterized by serious economic disturbances and growing inequality. VBL points to new movements and programs that have emerged, such as economy of solidarity initiatives, which are examples of economic activity marked by gratuitousness and communion. We seek to integrate the leadership requirements of solidarity economy enterprises with those based on Catholic Social Thought (CST) and the VBL to come up with a more complete set of factors for a construct that can be called “Christian business leadership.” This …

Barley is one of the key cereal grains for malting and brewing industries. However, climate variability and unprecedented weather events can impact barley yield and end-product quality. The genetic background and environmental conditions are key factors in defining the barley proteome content and malting characteristics. Here, we measure the barley proteome and malting characteristics of three barley lines grown in Western Australia, differing in genetic background and growing location, by applying liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Using data-dependent acquisition LC-MS, 1571 proteins were detected with high confidence. Quantitative data acquired using sequential window acquisition of all theoretical (SWATH) MS on barley …

Patient Perception Of Intensive Care Unit Discomfort, Essa Hakamy Aug 2022

Patient Perception Of Intensive Care Unit Discomfort, Essa Hakamy

Dissertations

Background: Discomfort has a significant effect on patient health and well-being; however, the symptoms are often difficult to address in ICU. Most patients in ICU are unable to communicate, making it difficult for physicians and nurses to distinguish between pain and discomfort. For example, artificial airways and assisted ventilation prevent patients from communicating. Patients may also have difficulty communicating due to delirium, fatigue, sedation, or neurological disease. Rationale: Discomfort has a considerable influence on patient health outcomes and well-being if not identified and addressed. Researchers have not explicitly explored discomfort apart from pain, which underscores the importance of studying the …

Linking Variation In Planktonic Primary Production To Coral Reef Fish Growth And Condition, Rc Roche, A Heenan, Bm Taylor, Jn Schwarz, Et Al Aug 2022

Linking Variation In Planktonic Primary Production To Coral Reef Fish Growth And Condition, Rc Roche, A Heenan, Bm Taylor, Jn Schwarz, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Within low-nutrient tropical oceans, islands and atolls with higher primary production support higher fish biomass and reef organism abundance. External energy subsidies can be delivered onto reefs via a range of physical mechanisms. However, the influence of spatial variation in primary production on reef fish growth and condition is largely unknown. It is not yet clear how energy subsidies interact with reef depth and slope. Here we test the hypothesis that with increased proximity to deep-water oceanic nutrient sources, or at sites with shallower reef slopes, parameters of fish growth and condition will be higher. Contrary to expectations, we found …

Mechanisms Of Substrate Selectivity And Transport By Escherichia Coli Atp- Binding Cassette (Abc) Transporter Metni, Yuchun Chen Aug 2022

Mechanisms Of Substrate Selectivity And Transport By Escherichia Coli Atp- Binding Cassette (Abc) Transporter Metni, Yuchun Chen

Master's Theses

ABC transporters are central in many cellular functions including nutrient uptake, signal transduction membrane assembly, and cellular detoxification. Both structural and functional studies have revealed insights into the high-affinity uptake mechanism of the MetNI methionine ABC transporter. Using the energy from ATP binding and hydrolysis, the MetNI-Q system can import L-Met, D-Met, and other methionine derivatives against concentration gradients. Many mechanistic studies of ABC transporter propose a model in which cognate binding proteins sequester substrates in the periplasm and deliver them to the transporter. In contrast, recent in vivo and crystallographic studies of MetNI-Q suggest that some substrates may be …

Influenza A virus (IAV) coopts numerous host factors for efficient replication. The cysteine protease cathepsin W (CTSW) has been identified as one host factor required for IAV entry, specifically for the escape of IAVs from late endosomes. However, the substrate specificity of CTSW and the proviral mechanism are thus far unknown. Here, we show that intracellular but not secreted CTSW promotes viral entry. We reveal 79 potential direct and 31 potential indirect cellular target proteins of CTSW using the high-throughput proteomic approach terminal amine isotopic labeling of substrates (TAILS) and determine the cleavage motif shared by the substrates of CTSW. …

HIV-1 uses CD4 as a receptor and chemokine receptors CCR5 and/or CXCR4 as coreceptors. CCR5 antagonists are a class of antiretrovirals used to inhibit viral entry. Phenotypic prediction algorithms such as Geno2Pheno are used to assess CCR5 antagonist eligibility, for which the V3 region is screened. However, there exist scenarios where the algorithm cannot give an accurate prediction of tropism. The current study examined coreceptor shift of HIV-1 from CCR5-tropic strains to CXCR4-tropic or dual-tropic strains among five subjects in a clinical trial of the CCR5 antagonist vicriviroc. Envelope gene amplicon libraries were constructed and subjected to next-generation sequencing, as …

Membrane Integrity Contributes To Resistance Of Cryptococcus Neoformans To The Cell Wall Inhibitor Caspofungin, Brenda Moreira-Walsh, Abigail Ragsdale, Woei Lam, Rajendra Upadhya, Evan Xu, Jennifer K Lodge, Maureen J Donlin

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans causes up to 278 000 infections each year globally, resulting in up to 180,000 deaths annually, mostly impacting immunocompromised people. Therapeutic options for C. neoformans infections are very limited. Caspofungin, a member of the echinocandin class of antifungals, is generally well tolerated but clinically ineffective against C. neoformans. We sought to identify biological processes that can be targeted to render the cell more susceptible to echinocandins by screening the available libraries of gene deletion mutants made in the KN99α background for caspofungin sensitivity. We adapted a Candida albicans fungal biofilm assay for the growth characteristics …

Through The Back Door: Unsettling And Witnessing The Transgenerational Trauma Paradigm With African American Women, Asia Tonja Marie Amos Aug 2022

Through The Back Door: Unsettling And Witnessing The Transgenerational Trauma Paradigm With African American Women, Asia Tonja Marie Amos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to disrupt and challenge how research and representation of transgenerational trauma in the field of psychology perpetuates the elision and erasure of African American women's experiences. In social sciences and the medical field, African American women are often described within trauma studies as either silent sufferers of substance abuse and interpersonal violence or perpetrators of lateral violence, child abuse/neglect, etc., which dislocates their personhood and complex nuances of their experiences (e.g. Broussard, 2013; Ponton III, 2018; Ricks, 2018). This study critiques, decolonizes, and de-pathologizes transgenerational trauma transmission (TTT) by using Black feminist intersectional and …

Contribution Of Orbitofrontal Cortex Activity To Risky Decision-Making, Daniel Bradley Karmiol Gabriel Aug 2022

Contribution Of Orbitofrontal Cortex Activity To Risky Decision-Making, Daniel Bradley Karmiol Gabriel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this dissertation, I recorded individual neuronal activity from the lateral orbitofrontal cortex of awake, freely moving animals as they behaved in a punishment-based risky decision-making task. In this risky decision-making task, subjects chose between a small food reward and a large food reward associated with either a 0% or 50% risk of a concurrent punishment in the form of a mild footshock. As the risk of punishment increased, subjects reduced choice of the large reward. To fully dissect the neuronal underpinnings throughout the decision-making process, I designed the behavioral paradigm to contain three distinct stages: deliberation, choice selection, and …

Current Status And Trends In Forest Genomics, Dulal Borthakur, Victor Busov, Xuan Hieu Cao, Qingzhang Du, Oliver Gailing, Fikret Isik, Hairong Wei, Et. Al.

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Forests are not only the most predominant of the Earth's terrestrial ecosystems, but are also the core supply for essential products for human use. However, global climate change and ongoing population explosion severely threatens the health of the forest ecosystem and aggravtes the deforestation and forest degradation. Forest genomics has great potential of increasing forest productivity and adaptation to the changing climate. In the last two decades, the field of forest genomics has advanced quickly owing to the advent of multiple high-throughput sequencing technologies, single cell RNA-seq, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-mediated genome editing, and spatial transcriptomes, as …

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is among the most common infections treated worldwide each year and is caused primarily by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Rising rates of antibiotic resistance among uropathogens have spurred a consideration of alternative treatment strategies, such as bacteriophage (phage) therapy; however, phage-bacterial interactions within the urinary environment are poorly defined. Here, we assess the activity of two phages, namely, HP3 and ES17, against clinical UPEC isolates using in vitro and in vivo models of UTI. In both bacteriologic medium and pooled human urine, we identified phage resistance arising within the first 6 to 8 h of coincubation. …

The Effects Of Covid 19-Related Social Media Hate Crime On Asian And Asian Americans' Self-Esteem, Saachi Chugh

LSU Master's Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people communicate, live, socialize and perhaps the way they feel about the Asian population. The United States has seen a rise in the Asian hate crimes on online and offline platforms since the beginning of the pandemic which has affected the overall well-being of the Asian population. To our knowledge, the present study is one of the first studies to address the effects of COVID 19-related online perceived racial discrimination on the self-esteem of Asians. Additional objectives were to reveal the different coping mechanisms being used by the Asian population to cope with …

Dirty Theology: Protecting The Soil As An Act Of Worship, Ellie Martin Aug 2022

Dirty Theology: Protecting The Soil As An Act Of Worship, Ellie Martin

New Horizons

When considering the role of religion in the fight against violence and injustices, soil has not been a prominent, or even minor, focus for most Christians. However, we are currently witnessing the anthropogenic degradation of our soil, caused primarily by our industrialized agricultural practices. This violence perpetrated against the ground is critically important to address because our lives as human beings are deeply dependent upon healthy soil. As Christians, a soil-based theological anthropology connects us to the soil on an even deeper level, reminding us that we are formed from this ground and have a sacred responsibility to love and …

From Trauma To Resilience: The Cases Of Beirut Syndrome By Alexandre Najjar And Beirut 2020 Diary Of A Collapse By Charif Majdalani (Comparative Study), Ilham Slim-Hoteit, Lama Farhat

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

This study is an attempt to think, interpret and analyze the concept of resilience and to study the factors and mechanisms that result from it under the influence of historical, psychic, social and cultural challenges. Boris Cyrulnik defines resilience as a "biological, psycho-affective, social and cultural process that allows a new development after psychic trauma". It is thus presented as an experience that can only be lived after going through various shocks, turbulences and disturbances, whether individual or collective. The two novels of Alexandre Najjar Le syndrome de Beyrouth and Charif Majdalani Beyrouth 2020 Journal d'un effondrement seem to offer …

Artificial Intelligence In Cybersecurity, Ricardo Gonzalez

American Journal of Rising Scholar Activities

Keeping unsuitable web content from young eyes is a challenge, given the wide-open environment of the internet. Research was conducted into selecting an Artificial Intelligence interface to be used to train and select whether specific images represented explicit material or not. Ten potential vendors were reviewed, and Google Automl Cloud® was selected for training and verification testing. Unfortunately, it was difficult to obtain a sizable enough archive of approved images to complete the originally envisioned training and testing program. A modest-sized image data base was finally secured, and the code was successfully tested with a small data set, even though …
