Effects Of Sensory Cues On Product Acceptability And Consumer Perceptions, Emotions, And Behavior, Cristhiam Gurdian Curran
Effects Of Sensory Cues On Product Acceptability And Consumer Perceptions, Emotions, And Behavior, Cristhiam Gurdian Curran
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Visual and cognitive cues can affect overall liking (OL) and consumer perceptions, emotions, and behavior. The first study explored the effect of product color difference on the liking, perception, and purchase intent (PI) of cheese-flavored-tortilla chips (CFTC) formulations (A and B) on serving plates (plastic, foam, and paper). Color differences between formulations influenced crunchiness and saltiness liking and perception, which together with overall flavor liking and formulation, mainly determined CFTC OL. Although having similar fracturability (N) and sodium content, formulation A had higher crunchiness and saltiness likings. PI was influenced by crunchiness, saltiness, and OF liking with 37, 49, and …
Caloric Restriction Prevents Obesity- And Intermittent Hypoxia-Induced Cardiac Remodeling In Leptin-Deficient Ob/Ob Mice, Aaron A. Jones, Sarah N. Framnes-Deboer, Arianne Shipp, Deanna M. Arble
Caloric Restriction Prevents Obesity- And Intermittent Hypoxia-Induced Cardiac Remodeling In Leptin-Deficient Ob/Ob Mice, Aaron A. Jones, Sarah N. Framnes-Deboer, Arianne Shipp, Deanna M. Arble
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Background:
Intermittent hypoxia (IH), a key characteristic of obstructive sleep apnea, is independently associated with cardiometabolic impairment. While endogenous leptin levels may provide cardioprotective effects against hypoxia, leptin resistance is common among obese individuals presenting with obstructive sleep apnea.
Methods:
Here, we assessed left ventricle (LV) function using M-mode echocardiography in lean wild-type, calorically-restricted ob/ob, and obese ob/ob mice before and after 6 days of IH to determine how obesity and intermittent hypoxia interact to affect cardiac function independent of leptin signaling.
Results:
Calorically-restricting ob/ob mice for 4 weeks prior to IH exposure prevented weight gain (−2.1 ± 1.4 …

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) are important therapeutic targets, playing a crucial role in the regulation of many cellular processes and being linked to many diseases. Yet, there is still much to be understood regarding their functions and the biological pathways in which they are involved, as well as on the structural requirements that could drive the development of selective modulators of PRMT activity. Here we report a deconstruction-reconstruction approach that, starting from a series of type I PRMT inhibitors previously identified by us, allowed for the identification of potent and selective inhibitors of PRMT4, which regardless of the low cell …

The Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys Volans) In Lincoln, Nebraska, Melissa J. Panella, Shaun M. Dunn, Thomas E. Labedz, Hugh H. Genoways
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) is considered a species of greatest conservation need in Nebraska and listed as threatened in the state. Historically, the geographic range of the southern flying squirrel in Nebraska has been restricted to five eastern counties from a northern suburb of Omaha, Douglas Co., southward in the four counties of Sarpy, Otoe, Nemaha, and Richardson, all bordering the Missouri River on the east. In late November of 2018, a resident of Lincoln, Lancaster Co., Nebraska, contacted the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission about an animal found dead in his yard. This animal proved …

Finding Biomarkers From Long-Non-Coding Rnas In Serum Of Patients With Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Nouran Yonis
Theses and Dissertations
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a serious global public health problem as it is a highly prevalent condition, that begins as simple liver steatosis and develops into an inflammatory steatosis form known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). NAFLD has been linked with multiple comorbidities, which in certain cases predisposes to mortality secondary to extrahepatic neoplasms and coronary diseases. On the other hand, NASH leaves patients at risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The incidence of NAFLD- based HCC is steadily increasing and is projected to surpass the incidence of HCC from viral origins. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been …

Understanding prostate cancer onset and progression in order to rationally treat this disease has been critically limited by a dire lack of relevant pre-clinical animal models. We have generated a set of genetically engineered mice that mimic human prostate cancer, initiated from the gland epithelia. We chose driver gene mutations that are specifically relevant to cancers of young men, where aggressive disease poses accentuated survival risks. An outstanding advantage of our models are their intact repertoires of immune cells. These mice provide invaluable insight into the importance of immune responses in prostate cancer and offer scope for studying treatments, including …
