3d Pore Structure Characterization Of Stored Grain Bed, Charles Nwaizu, Qiang Zhang, Christiana Iluno

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

An image analysis technique for reconstruction of the complex 3D pore structure within bulk grain from 2D section images was presented. The technique relies on aligning successive 2D images of cut-sections obtained from colored-wax solidified soybean grain beds, which were then subjected to image processing using ImageJ software developed by the National Institute of Health (NIH, Bethesda, Md.) for the reconstruction and visualization of different airflow paths within the bulk grain. Porosity and tortuosity values were quantified from the 3D image volume and 3D reconstructed inter-connected airflow paths to develop empirical mathematical models for predicting porosity and tortuosity as a …

Piezoresistive microcantilever sensor is widely used in sensing applications including liquid and gas flow detection. Microcantilevers can function as an embedded system if they are coated with polymers or nanomaterials to improve sensing performance. In this paper, we investigated the performance of piezoresistive microcantilevers (PMC) with and without additional coating. We studied the sensitivity of the PMC sensor after coating it with a three-dimensional porous hydrogel and piezoresistive graphene oxide layer. Hydrogel embedded piezoresistive microcantilever (EPM) showed better results than PMC during solvent sensing application. The resistance change for hydrogel embedded PMC was higher compared to bare PMC by 430% …

‘Greenness’ In The Eye Of The Beholder: Comparing Perceptions Of Sustainability And Well-Being Between Artificial And Natural Turfgrass, Michael R. Barnes, Eric Watkins Sep 2022

‘Greenness’ In The Eye Of The Beholder: Comparing Perceptions Of Sustainability And Well-Being Between Artificial And Natural Turfgrass, Michael R. Barnes, Eric Watkins

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Turfgrass lawns are a central component in urban green space and provide a variety of ecosystem services. Traditionally, natural turfgrass lawns can have substantial input requirements (e.g., water, herbicides), which if not managed properly can have harmful ecological effects. A proposed solution that has already been adopted in many cities are artificial turfgrass lawns which do not require some of the traditional inputs of natural lawns. However, understanding perceptions of the sustainability and well-being benefits between these two surfaces are unknown. We surveyed adults in the United States in order to understand perceptions of sustainability and well-being between artificial and …

Evidence For The Effects Of Wind On The Biogeography Of Soil Mites In Urban Tree Wells, John R. Mceachern

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The theoretical predictions of island biogeography have been applied successfully by a number of researchers studying the population and community structures of invertebrates living in large urban parks and remnant natural areas. Few, however, have examined the biogeography of smaller patches and the role that specific dispersal techniques play in shaping species distributions. In this study, I examine the impact of several biogeographical and environmental factors, including wind channelization effects, on the abundance of soil mites in small, urban tree wells in Westminster, Maryland. By testing five models that include the variables of well area, isolation, and dominate wind direction, …

Pushing The Needle: Vaccination Mandates In The Age Of Covid, Lucien J. Dhooge

San Diego Law Review

Recent surveys of employers indicate growing support for mandatory COVID vaccination as a condition of employment. However, employer consensus is not universal, and there remains considerable reluctance despite the Biden administration’s recently announced vaccination policies. This manuscript examines arguments against employer mandates followed by suggested strategies for employers who insist on adopting vaccination policies. The manuscript argues in favor of state vaccination mandates with a focus on the government’s unique advantages unavailable to private employers. The manuscript concludes that, despite misgivings regarding private vaccination mandates, it is time to heed the advice of the medical and public health communities and …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

More than half of the world’s population live in cities. Increasing numbers of generations are now born and raised in urban landscapes with decreasing opportunities towards interacting with natural environments. This extinction of experience leads to environmental apathy and lack of bioliteracy, which is a central aspect to be tackled in conservation strategies. At the same time, people who live near or at non-urban settings are closer to natural habitats but do not have similar access to concepts of environmentalism and may lack incentives to lean towards nature conservation, instead of its exploitation or even illegal activities. We here propose …

Canonical RNA processing in mammalian mitochondria is defined by tRNAs acting as recognition sites for nucleases to release flanking transcripts. The relevant factors, their structures, and mechanism are well described, but not all mitochondrial transcripts are punctuated by tRNAs, and their mode of processing has remained unsolved. Using Drosophila and mouse models, we demonstrate that non-canonical processing results in the formation of 3' phosphates, and that phosphatase activity by the carbon catabolite repressor 4 domain-containing family member ANGEL2 is required for their hydrolysis. Furthermore, our data suggest that members of the FAST kinase domain-containing protein family are responsible for these …

Cyclic adenosine diphosphate (ADP)–ribose (cADPR) isomers are signaling molecules produced by bacterial and plant Toll/interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domains via nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (oxidized form) (NAD+) hydrolysis. We show that v-cADPR (2′cADPR) and v2-cADPR (3′cADPR) isomers are cyclized by O-glycosidic bond formation between the ribose moieties in ADPR. Structures of 2′cADPR-producing TIR domains reveal conformational changes that lead to an active assembly that resembles those of Toll-like receptor adaptor TIR domains. Mutagenesis reveals a conserved tryptophan that is essential for cyclization. We show that 3′cADPR is an activator of ThsA effector proteins from the bacterial antiphage defense system termed Thoeris and …

Seasonal Habitat Selection By American White Pelicans, Frederick L. Cunningham, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King Sep 2022

Seasonal Habitat Selection By American White Pelicans, Frederick L. Cunningham, Guiming Wang, D. Tommy King

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Resource utilization strategies of avian migrants are a major concern for conservation and management. Understanding seasonal habitat selection by migratory birds helps us explain the ongoing continental declines of migratory bird populations. Our objective was to compare the secondorder and third-order habitat selection by the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos; hereafter pelican) between the breeding and non-breeding grounds. We tested the Lack hypothesis that habitat selection by migratory birds is stronger on the breeding grounds than on the nonbreeding grounds. We used random-effect Dirichlet-multinomial models to estimate the second-order habitat selection between the seasons with the GPS locations …
