The Transgender Population: Expanding Access To Services, Ruby Amanda Oboro Offerie Oct 2022

The Transgender Population: Expanding Access To Services, Ruby Amanda Oboro Offerie

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)

According to the CDC, 2% (1.3 million) individuals, 0-17 identify as transgender. Individuals that identify as transgender have a higher incidence of mental and physical challenges, face health inequities, share a common need for specific types of support, and lack representation. Yet, there still remains a significant gap in strategies for the provision of services for this cohort. It is based on this note that this presentation is pursued.

‘Xi Jinping Thought’: Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems And Military Modernization With Chinese Characteristics, Aiden Warren, Alek Hillas

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

The article seeks to appraise Beijing’s military modernization and positions on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS). In examining the rhetoric of Chinese policy makers through a qualitative analysis of relevant policy documents and Chinese statements, the article begins by evaluating the relationship between military modernization and the advancement of China’s innovation and civil- ‍military integration strategies in the Xi Jinping era. Secondly, the article considers, via an analysis of diplomatic statements, the context of Chinese discussions on LAWS under the framework of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW). The analysis proposes it is probable that China is seeking to …

Matroidal And Lattices Structures Of Rough Sets And Some Of Their Topological Characterizations, Abd El Fattah A. El Atik, Manal E. Ali

Information Sciences Letters

Matroids, rough set theory and lattices are efficient tools of knowledge discovery. Lattices and matroids are studied on preapproximations spaces. Li et al. proved that a lattice is Boolean if it is clopen set lattice for matroids. In our study, a lattice is Boolean if it is closed for matroids. Moreover, a topological lattice is discussed using its matroidal structure. Atoms in a complete atomic Boolean lattice are completely determined through its topological structure. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition for a predefinable set is proved in preapproximation spaces. The value k for a predefinable set in lattice of matroidal …

Mathematical Model For Unsteady Remediation Of River Pollution By Aeration, Mohamed Kh. Hadhouda, Zeinab S. Hassan

Information Sciences Letters

The governing coupled pair of nonlinear unsteady-state equations describing the concentration of the pollutant P(x,t) and the dissolved oxygen concentration X(x,t) in a river are solved numerically in one dimension x. The initial values of both P(x,t) and X(x,t) are assumed to be decreasing exponential functions in x. The results are presented and discussed graphically. We have proved mathematically the fact that the high concentration of pollutant can be reduced by releasing adequate discharges from barrage in a river. The different effects of parameters controlling the flow on both P(x,t) and X(x,t) are studied along the river at different time …

Thoracic aortic aneurysms involving the root and/or the ascending aorta enlarge over time until an acute tear in the intimal layer leads to a highly fatal condition, an acute aortic dissection (AAD). These Stanford type A AADs, in which the tear occurs above the sinotubular junction, leading to the formation of a false lumen in the aortic wall that may extend to the arch and thoracoabdominal aorta. Type B AADs originate in the descending thoracic aorta just distal to the left subclavian artery. Genetic variants and various environmental conditions that disrupt the aortic wall integrity have been identified that increase …

A Bioresorbable Peripheral Nerve Stimulator For Electronic Pain Block, Geumbee Lee, Emily Ray, Sabrina Genovese, Ying Yan, Arman Odabas, Umang Khandpur, Wilson Z Ray, Matthew R Macewan, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Local electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves can block the propagation of action potentials, as an attractive alternative to pharmacological agents for the treatment of acute pain. Traditional hardware for such purposes, however, involves interfaces that can damage nerve tissue and, when used for temporary pain relief, that impose costs and risks due to requirements for surgical extraction after a period of need. Here, we introduce a bioresorbable nerve stimulator that enables electrical nerve block and associated pain mitigation without these drawbacks. This platform combines a collection of bioresorbable materials in architectures that support stable blocking with minimal adverse mechanical, electrical, …

Artificial Intelligence And The Situational Rationality Of Diagnosis: Human Problem-Solving And The Artifacts Of Health And Medicine, Michael W. Raphael Oct 2022

Artificial Intelligence And The Situational Rationality Of Diagnosis: Human Problem-Solving And The Artifacts Of Health And Medicine, Michael W. Raphael

Publications and Research

What is the problem-solving capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) for health and medicine? This paper draws out the cognitive sociological context of diagnostic problem-solving for medical sociology regarding the limits of automation for decision-based medical tasks. Specifically, it presents a practical way of evaluating the artificiality of symptoms and signs in medical encounters, with an emphasis on the visualization of the problem-solving process in doctor-patient relationships. In doing so, the paper details the logical differences underlying diagnostic task performance between man and machine problem-solving: its principle of rationality, the priorities of its means of adaptation to abstraction, and the effects …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Histone 2A (H2A) monoubiquitination is a fundamental epigenetics mechanism of gene expression, which plays a critical role in regulating cell fate. However, it is unknown if H2A ubiquitination is involved in EGFR-driven tumorigenesis. In the current study, we have characterized a previously unidentified oncogenic lncRNA (lncEPAT) that mediates the integration of the dysregulated EGFR pathway with H2A deubiquitination in tumorigenesis. LncEPAT was induced by the EGFR pathway, and high-level lncEPAT expression positively correlated with the glioma grade and predicted poor survival of glioma patients. Mass spectrometry analyses revealed that lncEPAT specifically interacted with deubiquitinase USP16. LncEPAT inhibited USP16's recruitment to …

Moons, Maths, And Middle-Earth: Misconceptions About Tolkien’S Scientific And Mathematical Prowess, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

Tolkien's use of real-world science in fleshing out his secondary world of Middle-earth is well-known, including errors he made in the process. With the recent publication of The Nature of Middle-earth, additional attention has been paid to Tolkien's use of mathematics in the same vein. However, reviews of the volume tend to reflect misconceptions about the level of Tolkien's mathematical ability.
