Factors Associated With Sleep Quality And Duration Among Beirut Arab University Students, Sakina El- Kadi, Rosy Nahed Mitri

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Sleep is part of the everyday physiological rhythm that is vital for enhancing wellness and appropriate body functions. University students are vulnerable to sleep disturbance due to many factors that affect their sleep–wake behavior. No study has so far evaluated the association between sleep quality and duration and the health and nutritional status of Lebanese college students. Thus, the present study was designed to evaluate the sleep quality and duration of Beirut Arab University (BAU) students in North Lebanon and to examine associations with their nutritional status, sociodemographic, eating behaviors, lifestyles and health characteristics. To do so, a cross-sectional study …

A Hierarchy Of Interactions Between Pathogenic Virus And Vertebrate Host, Robert Friedman Oct 2022

A Hierarchy Of Interactions Between Pathogenic Virus And Vertebrate Host, Robert Friedman

Faculty Publications

This review is of basic models of the interactions between a pathogenic virus and vertebrate animal host. The interactions at the population level are described by a predatory-prey model, a common approach in the ecological sciences, and depend on births and deaths within each population. This ecological perspective is complemented by models at the genetical level, which includes the dynamics of gene frequencies and the mechanisms of evolution. These perspectives are symmetrical in their relatedness and reflect the idealized forms of processes in natural systems. In the latter sections, the general use of deep learning methods is discussed within the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Exploration of important insect proteins — including allergens — and proteomes can be limited by protein extraction buffer selection and the complexity of the proteome. Herein, LC-MS/MS-based proteomics experiments were used to assess the protein extraction efficiencies for a suite of extraction buffers and the effect of ingredient processing on proteome and allergen detection. Discovery proteomics revealed that SDS-based buffer yields the maximum number of protein groups from three types of BSF samples. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that buffer composition and ingredient processing could influence allergen detection. Upon applying multi-level filtering criteria, 33 putative allergens were detected by comparing the detected …

Genetic Correlation And Causality Assessment Between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Coronary Artery Disease-Related Traits, Wole Akosile, Emmanuel Adewuyi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Consistent evidence from observational studies supports a risk-increasing association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and coronary artery disease (CAD); however, the mechanisms underlying their relationship remain poorly understood. This study assesses the genetic correlation and potential causal relationship between PTSD and CAD-related traits. We analysed genome-wide associated study summary data of PTSD (cases = 23,212, controls = 151,447) with CAD-related traits (sample size up to 408,458 individuals) to achieve our study objectives. Findings revealed a significant and positive genetic correlation between PTSD and CAD (rG = 0.19, p = 3.47 × 10 – 2), and between PTSD and CAD traits …

Terminase Subunits From The Pseudomonas-Phage E217, Ravi K Lokareddy, Chun-Feng David Hou, Steven G Doll, Fenglin Li, Richard E Gillilan, Francesca Forti, David S Horner, Federica Briani, Gino Cingolani

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Pseudomonas phages are increasingly important biomedicines for phage therapy, but little is known about how these viruses package DNA. This paper explores the terminase subunits from the Myoviridae E217, a Pseudomonas-phage used in an experimental cocktail to eradicate P. aeruginosa in vitro and in animal models. We identified the large (TerL) and small (TerS) terminase subunits in two genes ∼58 kbs away from each other in the E217 genome. TerL presents a classical two-domain architecture, consisting of an N-terminal ATPase and C-terminal nuclease domain arranged into a bean-shaped tertiary structure. A 2.05 Å crystal structure of the C-terminal domain revealed …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the leading genetic cause of end stage renal disease characterized by progressive expansion of kidney cysts. To better understand the cell types and states driving ADPKD progression, we analyze eight ADPKD and five healthy human kidney samples, generating single cell multiomic atlas consisting of ~100,000 single nucleus transcriptomes and ~50,000 single nucleus epigenomes. Activation of proinflammatory, profibrotic signaling pathways are driven by proximal tubular cells with a failed repair transcriptomic signature, proinflammatory fibroblasts and collecting duct cells. We identify GPRC5A as a marker for cyst-lining collecting duct cells that exhibits increased transcription factor …

Giant viruses are a large group of viruses that infect many eukaryotes. Although components that do not obey the overall icosahedral symmetry of their capsids have been observed and found to play critical roles in the viral life cycles, identities and high-resolution structures of these components remain unknown. Here, by determining a near-atomic-resolution, five-fold averaged structure of Parameciumbursaria chlorella virus 1, we unexpectedly found the viral capsid possesses up to five major capsid protein variants and a penton protein variant. These variants create varied capsidmicroenvironments for the associations of fibers, a vesicle, and previously unresolved minor capsid proteins. Our structure …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Localized biogenic corrosion and extrication of annoying odors caused by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have long been a big problem in the management of urban sewer systems. H2S emission control in sewers via chemically or biologically normal oxidation processes has also been investigated extensively and is costly. The objective of this work was to develop a new technology to mitigate the concentration of H2S in sewer pipes using conductive concrete. Experimental results after 66 days show that the concentration of hydrogen sulfide significantly decreased when conductive concrete was used as a microbial fuel cell. Both ordinary Portland cement and conductive concrete …
