Pedagogical practices can influence students’ confidence and ability beliefs and affect their ambition to persevere in science. Given the continuing need to diversify science and retain students in scientific programmes, science education must be tailored to cater to the needs of varied student groups. Since early experience in university programmes can be decisive in determining students’ further academic and professional choices, pedagogies employed in undergraduate science courses can be particularly influential in supporting science careers. Undergraduate science instructors are therefore encouraged to consider their approaches to teaching and learning from a variety of perspectives that could help empower students from …
Subpredictor Approach For Event-Triggered Control Of Discrete-Time Systems With Input Delays, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Corina Barbalata, Zhong Ping Jiang
Subpredictor Approach For Event-Triggered Control Of Discrete-Time Systems With Input Delays, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Corina Barbalata, Zhong Ping Jiang
Faculty Publications
We propose a new output event-triggered control design for linear discrete-time systems with constant arbitrarily long input delays, using delay compensating subpredictors. We prove input-to-state stability of the closed loop system, using framers and the theory of positive systems. A novel feature of our approach is our use of matrices of absolute values, instead of Euclidean norms, in our discrete-time event triggers for our delay compensating control design. We illustrate our approach using a model of the BlueROV2 marine vehicle, where our new event triggers lead to a smaller number of control recomputation times as compared with standard event triggers …
Time-Varying Rates Of Organic And Inorganic Mass Accumulation In Louisiana Marshes And Relation To Sea-Level Change, Sophie Vincent
Time-Varying Rates Of Organic And Inorganic Mass Accumulation In Louisiana Marshes And Relation To Sea-Level Change, Sophie Vincent
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana wetlands are complex systems that require a continuous input of organic and inorganic material to keep pace with relative sea-level rise (RSLR). Marshes, specifically, rely on organic material to build soil volume and maintain surface elevation. Interannual-to-decadal sea-level anomalies induced by Earth's internal climate variability and atmospheric disturbances such as hurricanes can affect marsh accretion, mineral deposition, and plant productivity. Coastal restoration projects such as sediment diversions are in progress to mitigate land loss and increase availability of inorganic sediment to coastal wetlands. The goal of this project is to determine if organic mass accumulation rates in Louisiana marshes …
Addressing A Labor Market Need For Health Managers And Policy Professionals: Development Of A Non-Clinical Health Science Degree Program For Health Policy And Management, Noemi Rodriguez

Institutional Distance And The Motivations To Springboard, Peter Zámborský, Zheng Joseph Yan
Institutional Distance And The Motivations To Springboard, Peter Zámborský, Zheng Joseph Yan
American Business Review
While institutional distance presents opportunities for development of the general theory of springboard MNEs, the direction of distance and its relationship to the motivations to springboard are largely ignored in the literature on emerging-market MNE (EMNE) internationalization. To fill the research gap, we develop a model of springboard motives, and incorporate institutional distance (including its direction) and ownership share as factors explaining them. Based on an empirical analysis of over 700 mergers and acquisitions (M&As) by EMNEs from 26 emerging economies in 2015–2017, we find that EMNEs tend to have capability-building springboard motives in cross-border M&A when they move down …

Can Gender And Major Explain College Students’ Performance In Business Statistics?, Waros Ngamsiriudom, Mitra L. Devkota, Mohan K. Menon
American Business Review
Recent discussions in education, industry, and government have focused on the need for growth and diversity in STEM fields. STEM education and practice directly contribute to the economic vitality of a nation and benefit its citizens. Yet, STEM education and employment growth seem lopsided concerning both gender and diversity. While researchers have studied various dimensions of this phenomenon, this paper seeks to add to the knowledge base by analyzing the effects of gender and college major on performance and attitudes in statistics-related courses. T-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression were used to investigate the effects of gender, major, …

Applying Technology To Promote Sexual And Reproductive Health And Prevent Gender Based Violence For Adolescents In Low And Middle-Income Countries: Digital Health Strategies Synthesis From An Umbrella Review, Keng-Yen Huang, Manasi Kumar, Sabrina Cheng, Anya Elena Urcuyo, Paul Macharia
Brain and Mind Institute
Aim: Adolescents in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) are facing numerous developmental, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges including exposure to multidimensional violence. Gender-based violence (GBV) specifically intimate partner violence (IPV) are both highly prevalent in LMICs and are strongly linked with poor SRH outcomes. However, GBV and IPV interventions have not yet been adequately integrated in SRH due to individual, social, cultural, service, and resource barriers. To promote long-term SRH, a more holistic approach that integrates GBV and IPV, and adolescent development needs is imperative. Digital health has the potential to address multiple service setup, provision, and addressing access barriers through …
Unsexing Breastfeeding, Naomi Schoenbaum
Unsexing Breastfeeding, Naomi Schoenbaum
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
For half a century, constitutional sex equality doctrine has been combating harmful sex stereotypes by invalidating laws that treat women as caregivers and men as breadwinners. Yet decades after the constitutional sex equality revolution unsexed parenting roles, one area of parenting has escaped this doctrine’s exacting gaze: breastfeeding. In the wake of public health efforts in the 1990s to promote breastfeeding, a raft of laws were enacted—from insurance coverage mandates under the Affordable Care Act to workplace accommodations under the Fair Labor Standards Act—that provide substantial breastfeeding protections and benefits, but only to women. Although the sexed law of breastfeeding …

Mechanism Understanding Of Li-Ion Separation Using A Perovskite-Based Membrane, Mahsa Golmohammadi, Meysam Habibi, Sima Rezvantalab, Yasin Mehdizadeh Chellehbari, Reza Maleki, Amir Razmjou
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Lithium ions play a crucial role in the energy storage industry. Finding suitable lithium-ion-conductive membranes is one of the important issues of energy storage studies. Hence, a perovskite-based membrane, Lithium Lanthanum Titanate (LLTO), was innovatively implemented in the presence and absence of solvents to precisely understand the mechanism of lithium ion separation. The ion-selective membrane’s mechanism and the perovskite-based membrane’s efficiency were investigated using Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation. The results specified that the change in the ambient condition, pH, and temperature led to a shift in LLTO pore sizes. Based on the results, pH plays an undeniable role in facilitating …
Brain-Wide Versus Genome-Wide Vulnerability Biomarkers For Severe Mental Illnesses, Peter Kochunov, Aris Sotiras, Et Al.
Brain-Wide Versus Genome-Wide Vulnerability Biomarkers For Severe Mental Illnesses, Peter Kochunov, Aris Sotiras, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Severe mental illnesses (SMI), including major depressive (MDD), bipolar (BD), and schizophrenia spectrum (SSD) disorders have multifactorial risk factors and capturing their complex etiopathophysiology in an individual remains challenging. Regional vulnerability index (RVI) was used to measure individual's brain-wide similarity to the expected SMI patterns derived from meta-analytical studies. It is analogous to polygenic risk scores (PRS) that measure individual's similarity to genome-wide patterns in SMI. We hypothesized that RVI is an intermediary phenotype between genome and symptoms and is sensitive to both genetic and environmental risks for SMI. UK Biobank sample of N = 17,053/19,265 M/F (age = 64.8 …

The Womb In Labour: Representing The Woman’S Body As An Active Vessel In Hildegard Of Bingen’S Cause Et Cure, Minji Lee
Department of Religion Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Hildegard of Bingen was a German nun who wrote medical treatises in the Middle Ages that interpreted the female body as a positive and purifying agent of God’s creation and salvation at a time when negative connotations of female physicality prevailed in medicine. In particular, she described the female body as an active vessel, in opposition to the predominant image of the female body as passive. Her explanations of conception, pregnancy and childbirth in her medical book Cause et Cure represent the female body as actively advancing, nourishing, purifying and caring for future generations in the form of the baby, …

County-Level Societal Predictors Of Covid-19 Cases And Deaths Changed Through Time In The United States: A Longitudinal Ecological Study, Philip J. Bergmann, Nathan A. Ahlgren, Rosalie A. Torres Stone
Biology
People of different racial/ethnic backgrounds, demographics, health, and socioeconomic characteristics have experienced disproportionate rates of infection and death due to COVID-19. This study tests if and how county-level rates of infection and death have changed in relation to societal county characteristics through time as the pandemic progressed. This longitudinal study sampled monthly county-level COVID-19 case and death data per 100,000 residents from April 2020 to March 2022, and studied the relationships of these variables with racial/ethnic, demographic, health, and socioeconomic characteristics for 3125 or 97.0% of U.S. counties, accounting for 96.4% of the U.S. population. The association of all county-level …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD) promotes tree species diversity by reducing recruitment near conspecific adults due to biotic feedbacks from herbivores, pathogens, or competitors. While this process is well-described in tropical forests, tests of temperate tree species range from strong positive to strong negative density dependence. To explain this, several studies have suggested that tree species traits may help predict the strength and direction of density dependence: for example, ectomycorrhizal-associated tree species typically exhibit either positive or weaker negative conspecific density dependence. More generally, the strength of density dependence may be predictably related to other species-specific ecological attributes such as …
Abortion, Pregnancy Loss, & Subjective Fetal Personhood, Greer Donley, Jill Wieber Lens
Abortion, Pregnancy Loss, & Subjective Fetal Personhood, Greer Donley, Jill Wieber Lens
Vanderbilt Law Review
Long-standing dogma dictates that recognizing pregnancy loss threatens abortion rights-—acknowledging that miscarriage and stillbirthinvolve the loss of something valuable, the theory goes, creates a slippery slope to fetal personhood. For decades, antiabortion advocates have capitalized on this tension and weaponized the grief that can accompany pregnancy loss in their efforts to legislate fetal personhood and end abortion rights. In response, abortion rights advocates have at times fought legislative efforts to support those experiencing pregnancy loss and, more recently, remained silent, alienating those who suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth.
This Article argues that this perceived tension can be reconciled through the …

Stability Of Fishes Assemblage Structure Over A Lustrum In Coastal Wetlands Under Different Disturbances In An Industrial Zone Of The Central Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Carlos E. Cintra-Buenrostro, Alejandro Fierro-Cabo
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Shallow coastal wetlands within the territory of an industrial port in southern Tamaulipas, Mexico, were monitored seasonally over a lustrum, focusing on their fishes assemblage and water parameters. The purpose was to characterize these ecosystems that are affected by different disturbances of industrial origin, document changes, and assess potentially degrading terms as the affectations prevailed over the period of study. The wetlands are differentially affected by impacting land uses in their immediate surroundings, by crude oil leaks, and/or by diverse industrial wastewater discharges. Water parameters varied only slightly over time for most sites, and relative disparities among sites remained. The …
