National Trends And Survival Outcomes Of Performing Immediate Breast Reconstruction For Male Breast Cancer Patients, Neha Sarvepalli, Nayana Dekhne, Mohamad Sebai, Patrick Karabon
Conference Presentation Abstracts
INTRODUCTION: Immediate breast reconstruction after a mastectomy was reported in 43.3% of female patients in 2014; and has been associated with improved quality of life and adherence to adjuvant therapies. While there are many studies regarding immediate breast reconstruction in women, little has been reported about reconstruction rates and outcomes in male breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to examine the trends and outcomes of performing Immediate Breast Reconstruction (IBR) in male breast cancer (MBC) patients following a mastectomy. METHODS: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) registry from 2004 to 2014 was used to identify non-metastatic MBC patients who …

Exploring The Morphometrics Of The Diatom Fragilariopsis Kerguelensis As A Proxy For Paleo-Sea Surface Temperature In The Late Pleistocene-Holocene Southern Ocean, Joseph Anthony Ruggiero
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The Southern Ocean has played a large role in moderating global climate since its inception in the Oligocene. With the onset of anthropogenic global warming, it is now more necessary than ever that we understand the world’s climate during periods of rapidly fluctuating temperature in the past. Climatic forecasts are informed by paleoenvironmental conditions of the past during these turbulent periods, which we can examine using proxy data. This thesis assesses a potential proxy for Sea Surface Temperature (SST) through morphometric analysis of the Southern Ocean diatom Fragilariopsis kerguelensis in the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica. This proxy is based off …

The focus …
Compact Wakefield Accelerator With Advanced Beam Manipulations, Wei Hou Tan
Compact Wakefield Accelerator With Advanced Beam Manipulations, Wei Hou Tan
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Beam-driven structure wakefield acceleration is an advanced accelerator concept proposedto develop accelerators with much smaller footprints than conventional state-of-the-art accelerators at a similar energy scale. The concept relies on the generation of electromagnetics wakefields through the interaction of a highly charged “drive” beam with a structure, such as a waveguide, to accelerate a following bright “witness” beam with produced wakefields. This dissertation discusses three aspects critical to structure-wakefield accelerators: the manipulation of the drive beam for efficient wakefield acceleration, the development of a photoinjector capable of producing bright witness electron beams, and the investigation of beam instability in a wakefield …
Succinylated Polyethylenimine Gene Delivery Agents For Enhanced Transfection Efficacy, Md. Nasir Uddin
Succinylated Polyethylenimine Gene Delivery Agents For Enhanced Transfection Efficacy, Md. Nasir Uddin
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Gene therapy aims to treat patients by altering or controlling gene expression. Today, most clinical approaches are viral-based due to their inherent gene delivery activity. However, there is still a significant interest in nonviral alternatives for gene delivery, particularly synthetic lipids and polymers, that do not suffer the immunogenicity, high cost, or mutagenesis concerns of viral vectors. Polymeric vectors are of particular interest due to the ability to further tune the polymer properties through the incorporation of additional functional units such as targeting ligands or shielding domains. Polyethylenimine (PEI), a highly cationic polymer, is often considered a benchmark for polymer-based …
Developments In Gold(Iii) Scaffolds For Protein Bioconjugation And Enhanced Anticancer Activity, Sailajah Gukathasan
Developments In Gold(Iii) Scaffolds For Protein Bioconjugation And Enhanced Anticancer Activity, Sailajah Gukathasan
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Site-selective modifications of target proteins using specially designed small molecules is a powerful tool that has been extensively utilized in biomedicine. Small molecules can modify proteins either covalently or non-covalently depending on their structures and intrinsic chemical reactivity. Covalent chemical modification presents a more stable and often irreversible interaction with target proteins; unlike non-covalent binders, which form weak, reversible interactions with protein. Therefore, covalent modifiers represent an effective class of therapeutics due to their stability and irreversibility once bound to target proteins of interest. I hypothesized that tuning biocompatible, high-valent gold(III) complexes toward nucleophile-induced reductive elimination will lead to covalent …
The Design And Synthesis Of New Organic Dithiols For Environmental Applications, Shashika Nadishani Bandara
The Design And Synthesis Of New Organic Dithiols For Environmental Applications, Shashika Nadishani Bandara
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
A thiol molecule, 2,6-pyridinediamidoethanethiol (PB9), was synthesized based on the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide scaffold with appended cysteamine groups. PB9 acts as an effective chelator for Pb(II) due to multiple binding sites (N3S2) through irreversible binding precipitating Pb(II). Removal of aqueous Pb(II) from solution was demonstrated by exploring the effects of time, initial PB9:Pb(II) ratios, pH, exposure time, and solution temperature. After 15 min the Pb(II) concentrations were reduced from 50.00 ppm to 0.30 ppm (99.4%) and 0.25 ppm (99.5%) for PB9:Pb ratios of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively. Removal of > 93% Pb(II) was observed over multiple pH values with …
1,2-Diamination Of Alkenes Via Reduction Of 1,2,3-Triazolinium Ions, Setareh Saryazdi
1,2-Diamination Of Alkenes Via Reduction Of 1,2,3-Triazolinium Ions, Setareh Saryazdi
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
1,2-Diamine substructures are prevalent functional motifs in natural products, pharmaceutical compounds, and ligands. The interesting functionalities of 1,2-diamines have inspired many synthetic chemists to design various methodologies for preparing these structures from simple precursors such as alkenes. In this work, we described two different but related methods using simple and easily accessible reagents for 1,2-diamination of alkenes. In the first method, an alkene undergoes 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with an organic azide to form a 1,2,3-triazoline. Subsequent N-alkylation of the generated 1,2,3-triazoline gives the 1,2,3-triazolinium ion, which is then hydrogenated over Raney Ni with a balloon of H2 to produce …
Cell-Engineered Vesicles For Therapeutic Delivery And Immunomodulatory Applications, Khaga Neupane
Cell-Engineered Vesicles For Therapeutic Delivery And Immunomodulatory Applications, Khaga Neupane
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Development of a new kind of drug delivery system (DDS) that could efficiently deliver therapeutics to the cell of interest would allow us to accomplish cell-specific drug delivery while eliminating systemic toxicity. Although nanocarriers including endogenously released extracellular vesicles (EEVs), liposomes, and small molecules seem to be promising drug delivery systems, biological challenges persist for their use in clinical applications. Here, we demonstrate nanovesicles engineered by fragmenting cellular membranes can be exploited as versatile DDSs for therapeutics delivery as well as immunomodulatory functions. Cell-engineered vesicles were produced by cavitating cells using nitrogen gas at high pressure followed by serial centrifugation. …

The public health response to the breakout of COVID-19 requires fundamental changes in individual behavior, such as isolation at home or social distancing. However, the difference in COVID mortality rates between men and women could indicate gender differences in COVID-19 attitudes and behavior. In this study, we used a sample of 512 participants to examine whether there were relationships between gender and degree of adherence to social distancing and quarantining protocols. An independent samples t-Test was conducted to evaluate the hypothesis that men spend fewer days social distancing than women. The test was not significant. Another independent samples t-Test was …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phomopsis stem canker (PSC), caused by species of Diaporthe, is a major disease of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in the U.S., which can cause yield loss over 40%. The disease prevalence increased since 2010 in the major sunflower producing U.S. states of Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Previous studies on the use of foliar fungicides in managing Phomopsis stem canker indicated mixed results on their efficacy in disease reduction and yield gain. Additionally, we do not have sufficient information on asymptomatic colonization by endophytic Diaporthe on sunflower tissue and how foliar fungicide and weather parameters affect the prevalence …

Standard treatment for patients with high-risk neuroblastoma remains multimodal therapy including chemoradiation, surgical resection, and autologous stem cell rescue. Immunotherapy has demonstrated success in treating many types of cancers; however, its use in pediatric solid tumors has been limited by low tumor mutation burdens. Gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRP-R) is overexpressed in numerous malignancies, including poorly-differentiated neuroblastoma. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to GRP-R have yet to be developed but could serve as a potential novel immunotherapy. This preclinical study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a novel GRP-R mAb immunotherapy against neuroblastoma. We established four candidate anti-GRP-R mAbs by screening a single-chain …

Advanced Science Research Center
Molecular chaperones have an essential role for the maintenance of a balanced protein homeostasis. Here, we investigate how protein kinases are recruited and loaded to the Hsp90-Cdc37 complex, the first step during Hsp90-mediated chaperoning that leads to enhanced client kinase stability and activation. We show that conformational dynamics of all partners is a critical feature of the underlying loading mechanism. The kinome co-chaperone Cdc37 exists primarily in a dynamic extended conformation but samples a low-populated, well-defined compact structure. Exchange between these two states is maintained in an assembled Hsp90-Cdc37 complex and is necessary for substrate loading. Breathing motions at the …

Water-responsive (WR) materials that reversibly deform in response to humidity changes show great potential for developing muscle-like actuators for miniature and biomimetic robotics. Here, it is presented that Bacillus (B.) subtilis’ peptidoglycan (PG) exhibits WR actuation energy and power densities reaching 72.6 MJ m−3 and 9.1 MW m−3, respectively, orders of magnitude higher than those of frequently used actuators, such as piezoelectric actuators and dielectric elastomers. PG can deform as much as 27.2% within 110 ms, and its actuation pressure reaches ≈354.6 MPa. Surprisingly, PG exhibits an energy conversion efficiency of ≈66.8%, which can be attributed to its super-viscous nanoconfined …

Proteins are an important class of biologics, but there are several recurring challenges to address when designing protein-based therapeutics. These challenges include: the propensity of proteins to aggregate during formulation, relatively low loading in traditional hydrophobic delivery vehicles, and inefficient cellular uptake. This last criterion is particularly challenging for anionic proteins as they cannot cross the anionic plasma membrane. Here we investigated the complex coacervation of anionic proteins with a block copolymer of opposite charge to form polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) micelles for use as a protein delivery vehicle. Using genetically modified variants of the model protein green fluorescent protein (GFP), …

AAA+ proteases regulate numerous physiological and cellular processes through tightly regulated proteolytic cleavage of protein substrates driven by ATP hydrolysis. FtsH is the only known family of membrane-anchored AAA+ proteases essential for membrane protein quality control. Although a spiral staircase rotation mechanism for substrate translocation across the FtsH pore has been proposed, the detailed conformational changes among various states have not been clear due to absence of FtsH structures in these states. We report here the cryo-EM structure for Thermotoga maritima FtsH (TmFtsH) in a fully ADP-bound symmetric state. Comparisons of the ADP-state structure with its apo-state and a substrate-engaged …

Violence Without Thought Or Memory, Marvin W. Acklin
Archives of Assessment Psychology
Understanding mental states in criminal defendants who have committed extreme homicidal violence invokes perspectives from neurobiology, psychoanalytic theory, and personality assessment. Individuals who commit extreme violence frequently claim to have no awareness or recollection of their violent actions. This paper examines violence without thought or memory—with a special focus on rage-type murder—through the lens of the neurobiology and neuroscience of affective violence, clinical and forensic personality assessment, and clinical case history. A forensic case study is presented of an extreme violent homicide perpetrated by a 14-year-old youth who killed his foster mother, including a psychological evaluation and a mental state …

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), often from the Type 1 (HSV-1) viral infection. This neurotropic double-stranded DNA virus impairs the integrity and permeability of the blood-brain barrier, allowing the virus to enter the brain. In several studies, HSV-1 impacts the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and limbic system, leading to brain damage. While significant progress has occurred in understanding this infection, clinicians should be vigilant for acute and chronic complications associated with HSE, such as autoimmune encephalitis, differential diagnoses, and psychological disorders. A growing body of literature focuses on the evidence of an association …

Languaging School Into Being : A Discourse Analysis Of Online Ela Classes Within The Context Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jason Christopher Toncic
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, school buildings across the United States shut their doors and transitioned students and teachers to remote learning, most often utilizing internet-based technology to provide either asynchronous or synchronous lessons. I was a high school English Language Arts teacher in Stone Valley School District in Northeastern New Jersey when the unprecedented school closures moved my classes online for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
As a teacher researcher who specialized in New Literacy Studies, I was particularly sensitive to how students and I used technology to continue lessons after the school building shut …
Marx, Critical Theory, And The Treadmill Of Production Of Value: Why Environmental Sociology Needs A Critique Of Capital, Alex Stoner
Journal Articles
This chapter explores the domestication of Marx’s critique of political economy within Marxist-oriented environmental sociology, and treadmill of production (ToP) theory, in particular. The aim is to explicate the theoretical resources for a rigorous critique of capital-induced planetary degradation. Shortcomings of ToP theory pertaining to the conceptualization of capital and value are identified. The reasons for these shortcomings, including how they might be addressed, are elaborated by reconsidering key aspects of Marx’s critical theory of modern capitalist society. The chapter contributes to current discussions in both critical theory and environmental sociology by demonstrating the continued relevance of Marx’s critical theory …

Tarsal Metric Trends Over The Medieval-Post-Medieval Transition In London, Malorie Albee
Journal Articles
The Medieval-Post-Medieval transition in England was an important shift in the human biocultural environment. With urbanization and industrialization came resultant changes in living and working conditions and subsequent effects on the skeleton. In addition, the Post-Medieval period ushered in changes in footwear and activity patterns, with potential consequences on foot bone morphology. The objective of this study is to compare calcaneal and talar lengths between the Medieval and Post-Medieval periods to determine whether there are quantifiable differences that correspond to shifting footwear and activity patterns. T-tests and ANCOVAs (and their non-parametric equivalents) were used to compare calcaneal and talar lengths …
